  • Strange FONT in Adobe Reader 9 with Windows 7

If a pdf was made from a word document or anything other than a scan the font is very strange, not default arial (see attached picture).  I had this problem in reader X adn downgraded adn still have the problem.  WHen this document is opened in gogle docs or on another computer the font is arial.  Thanks for your help.

I have the same issue in multiple documents on Windows 7 with Adobe Reader X 10.1.0.  Multiple others on my team can open the same files and do not have the issue.  I have done a terse check and we have similar installed programs, etc.
Since I am not creating the documents, I have no control over how they are created.  Also, I seem to have the issue on my computer and others do not.
Is there any way to troubleshoot font substitutions?  Is there any way to verify fonts?  Certainly I can see some fonts are not embedded in a sample I have, but I cannot see any way to know what font was specified and which was picked.  If I could find out that, I may delete the strangely spaced one so a better choice is picked.  It picks this odd font for what should be Arial...I think...but I am not sure. On this one sample doc I was able to get the creator to embed all fonts and it looks correct on my machine.  However the previous version without embedded fonts shows like this:
Here is what it should look like:
Both version look fine on other machines.
Properties on bad font substitution version (I expect the circled are the issue):
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • When creating PDF from web page why does text appears as strange font not readable?

I am using Acrobat Standard, ver. 9.5.5.  Frequently if I save a web page on either Firefox or Internet Explorer by printing to my Adobe PDF driver, much of the text is rendered in a strange font rather than in the font that appears on the web page.  The only work-around I have found is to print the document to a printer and then scan the printed page to create a PDF.  Is there a solution to this problem?

The OS may be an issue so what are you using Win7, Win8, XP, MAC, or other? In printing, what job settings are you using? When you open the PDF, check the properties (ctrl-D) to see if the fonts are embedded or not. The problem is likely related to the font not being embedded. The embedding may be a license issue for the font. Acrobat will only embed fonts that are properly licensed. You might try the Print or Press job settings that are a bit better to embedding all fonts.

  • Strange Fonts in labview graph's plot legend.

    Hello All,
I am running labview 7.1 on a Windows XP machine and
the default and only language is English (US). Verified this under
    Control Panel > Regional Settings.
When I run a VI, I get strange fonts in the plot
legend. They keep updating as the VI runs. Here is a screen shot of the
    plot legend:
I change the font to something I can read, save the VI and run it again
and it automatically changes to this unreadable font again. Any ideas
on what I can do? Thanks.

Is it just the font that is off, or are these actually non-printable characters?
Are you graphing e.g. dynamic data types? Do you possibly have weird names for your signals?

  • Strange Characters in Mail and Safari

    Hello,
Just got my mini home and have noticed strange characters appearing in both Mail and Safari.
It seems to be a font problem, but changing the fonts in mail and safarui prefs doesn't seem to fix it.
Specifically: The apple start page rss stories display a weird font, so do the mail headers in mac mail.
Yes, I did a search of the forum and the only things I seem to be coming up with are font issues related to outlook receiving mail on a pc.
    Any suggestions?
    Stefan

Without seeing what you mean by "strange characters" it is hard to tell, but the most common cause of gibberish text is the font Helvetica Fractions or Times Phonetic. Dump them if you have them. Also clean your font caches with FontFinagler (use google to find it).
Send a screen shot if you like (tom at bluesky dot org).

  • Strange Fonts Appearing in Applications

Hey everyone, I have a very strange issue…
About 2 weeks ago I installed a font called Cleanvertising.ttf for a website I was designing. The font worked fine and I experienced no problems. 5 or 6 days ago I went to Google.com. I noticed it had a very abnormal and bold style font throughout in all of the text and clickable items. When I left Google via the search results, and any others I opened myself were all the regular Lucida Grande, Times etc. After seeing this I sent all references of the Cleanvertising.ttf font file to the trash and permanently erased them.
In the days later the font started showing up in random email messages, and increasingly on random websites; ones I use frequently or only visit once. Now, unless web developers and those who email me are suddenly switching to this font (which is rather unlikely), it seems as though something is spreading through my system. I find it very annoying and hard to read at small sizes too! I’ve even run iAntivirus through my entire system and come up with nothing. I would like kill this problem before it gets out of hand somehow!
    Thanks for the help,
    Max

The only way I know that this could happen is that you still have copies of the offending font on your machine. It could be anywhere if you have autoactivation turned on in Fontbook. Or it lives on in font caches that need to be cleaned. It is not uncommon for poorly made fonts to substitute for the real ones in OS X.

  • Strange font substitution

    Hi there,
I am using a MacBook Pro with OSX 10.5.2. It has suddenly started to have problems with the fonts in fontbook and also doing some very strange font substitutions.
Instead of showing text normally it is replacing it with random characters. You can kind of read it but it's not real letters. I have a screenshot of it but don't know how to post the image on here.
This substitution is happening in Mail, Preview and Safari, so seems to be with native OS X software.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Simon,
Have you gone to FontBook and resolved duplicates?
Create a new account, name it "test" and see how your fonts work in that User acct? (That will tell where your font issue is coming from - whether it's in your Home fonts folder or a system fonts folder) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.
Open System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" make it an admin account. Check your fonts in that account and let us know the result.
Also, have you disabled Helvetica Fractions, Helvetica Neue and Times Phonetic, if you have them? They are known troublemakers.
Here is a user tip by Kurt Lang that lists all necessary system fonts and their locations. Also installed fonts and their font folders and loacation from Apple.

    Hi
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
The two fonts that seem to adversely affect Safari are Helvetica Fractions and Times Phonetic.
Open Font Book in your Applications folder. Enter either of these names in the spotlight panel. If either appears, disable it via the Edit menu. If neither is in your system, please provide a screenshot of the font type.
If the above referenced fonts applies to your situation, download a copy of Font Finagler. This will allow you to clean the Font cache.
    When done, restart the computer/Safari.

  • Strange fonts problem in VirtualBox

    Hello!
I've got some strange font artifacts, could anyone suggest something?
    http://imagebin.ca/view/WJVkiH2n.html

I have used VB on my MBP for some time and have Win7 (64bit), Win2000 and Ubuntu virtual machines all working well.
I suspect that you may have allocated all CPU cores to each VM. I found that will cause the whole machine to become sluggish. I reduced the numbers of cores to: Win7, two (of four on my MBP), and; Win2000 and Ubuntu, one each.
Of course, only have one machine, including the MBP, doing heavy processing at once.
Also keep in mind that installing an operating system is CPU intensive.
    Hope that helps.

  • Strange Font issue - Adobe reader

    Hi All,
First off - Thank you for your help.
I have a strange issue with Adobe Reader where the font is not correctly displayed correctly as compared to the original document. Document diplays in a strange font as per attachment.
I have removed and re-installed Adobe reader. Updated Reader to a newer version. Installed Adobe pro (licenced) and as a last resort - removed and updated local display drivers.
Issue remains as per attached image.
Is this due to embedded fonts? How do i fix this?  Re-imaging the machine is no go at this point.
    Please help!
    Thank You,
    L+G_Guy

Look at file > document properties > fonts and see if any are listed without the word "embedded" or "embedded subset" against them.
If a font isn't embedded and isn't available on your system, Adobe Reader will try and substitute another one - but it often looks strange. Aside from that without seeing the actual file we can't help, and of course Adobe Reader can't fix missing fonts; you have to either recreate the original PDF, or install the fonts on your computer.

  • Strange fonts (characters) in preference folder

There are Strange fonts (characters) in user/home/library/ preference folder.
Here are some examples: #¿ê◊8øˇ”0†~a|, #0ê◊8øˇ”0†~a|, ê◊8øˇ”0†~a|. Can you tell me what they are and if they can be deleted? Rob

    Hi, Rob.
As noted in this Adobe Photoshop Discussions topic, the cause appears to be the TWAIN plug-in included with Adobe Photoshop CS or CS2.
The answer appears to be to either:
    (a) move to another folder; or
    (b) insert ~ at the start of name of
    the TWAIN plug-in in the Macintosh HD > Applications > Adobe Photoshop CS/CS2 > Plug-Ins > Import/Export folder.
    Good luck!

I am pulling my hair out! I am using adobe indesign and just want to make a text box 'autofit text' as I change fonts a lot and want the font to automatically re-size as I change it.
Is it not possible to create a text box, fill it with dynamic (data driven) text, but make the font size either scale up or down automatically, so that the entire text box is filled? This is a feature in PrintShop Mail Pro called COPY FIT. but no such feature in Indesign??
help help help please - I have latest version of indesign - thanks, DJ

lol... it seems to work, but I have another huge problem!
Apparently .CSV files cannot contain page breaks in the data! The data I am trying to merge is a 'letter', with paragraphs, line breaks, etc.,
But, after data merging, it ignores page breaks and only merges the first paragraph of each letter. (sigh)
Solution? Hopefully, an EASY solution. lol as we have thousands of records.
Is there a third party indesign plugin that will allow .xml, or .xls data merge import??
    Thx,
    DJ
