Strange freezing effect

Hi,
My MacBook Pro 2.4 has begun to act strangely when I am using Safari and I wonder if anyone has seen this or has advice please?
I recently installed the latest iWork updates but haven't added any new programs. When using the MacBook Pro for some time the mouse or keyboard will stop working on single click. Double click works fine but on single click I get no response. At the same time when I move the cursor I select all screen text, it is as if the left click is still held down.
The only way to get out of this is to hold the on/off button down for 10 secs and force the machine to quit. The problem arises at any time and not necessarily when clicking the mouse or trackpad, for example the problem just occurred after I had not touched the machine for about 5 minutes.
To say this is a pain would be an under-statement, especially as my iPhone had to be replaced last week after Apple said it had numerous diagnostic failures when tested. All in all I am happy at switching to Mac from Windows last December but am not quite as impressed as I had hoped to be.
Please can anyone suggest what may be causing the problem or a solution. I have reset Safari and cleared all caches etc.
Thanks for any advice,
Mickey

Hmmm, the behavior you describe is sort of unusual. I don't think I've ever seen it before, so perhaps an Archive and Install is probably the safest course of action at this point. I'm not aware of any other preferences that could possibly cause this.

  • Why am I suddenly getting a strange banding effect when printing.

I've been using Adobe Photoshop CS5 for the last two years and I've started getting a strange banding effect on my prints.  Photoshop seems to be the only application that is effected.  I print on a large format printer, my drivers are up to date, if I print a smaller size and fit to page (test print) the print is ok.  When I print to full size I start having the problem.

However, when something starts acting weird suddenly, that is usually a sign to re-set your Photoshop preferences.
Preferences files vary by name and location for each version of Photoshop.
To re-create the preferences files for Photoshop, start the application while holding down Ctrl+Alt+Shift (Windows) or Command+Option+Shift (Mac OS). Then, click Yes to the message, "Delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings file?"

  • Strange "strobe" effect when doing slow motion

    hi
after using fcp for a year now, i strangly encountered a problem in a video i need to deliver in 2 days.
whenever i did a 50% slow motion i get a strange "strobe" effect. when the frame is more or less static then you wont be able to see it but when the camera pans or the object in the frame moves it is very disturbing.
this is only noticable when viewed on a tv set, not on my display.
i thought it was in the encoding so i did the whole "export using QT" again, this time making sure its 2 pass VBR 6.8 to 8 mbps. still there.
i am working on a Pal system without a monitor so i burned the video onto a dvd using dvdsp (as usual) and then played it in a pal dvd player and tv but this strobe thing is still there.
b.t.w the interlace option on the "export using QT" was set as auto, the same as always.
i didnt do anything different this time but still i get that problem. what could it be ? all the settings in fcp settings are set to 100% quality and the video is fully rendered.
i appriciate your comments and help.
    thanx

  • Strange Side Effects

    Hi,
I recently re-organized my Flex projects. I took them out of
the Flex Builder 3 default folder and put them in an easier
location. However when I did this I experienced some strange side
effects. First of all, the ContentAssist does not seem to work
anymore, and I've tried for several different projects. Also, the
'Outline' view displays a '!' for root and doesn't display any
    other nodes.
Also, what seemed stranger is that some code had to be
tweaked to work again that was working fine before the switch.
Because there was an old copy of a Site and a new copy, it seemed
like the 2 merged and so some code was old and some was new.
So basically I am curious whether there might be some config
files or something that was altered negatively in the move. I tried
cleaning all of the projects without any luck.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jesse

Did you create a workspace in the new location? I have about
    5 work spaces
in different locations, and I don't have any of these
    problems. Also, did
you import the projects into your new workspace?

  • Strange Freeze Up

    Hi Gang
    I have a single G5 1.8 (see my stats)
I'm very deligent about running Disk Untilty for all 5 external Hard Drives and both internal drives. I also have 1.5 TB Back Up Drives for all of them.
I've been working in several FCP Files at one time, while I have 5 external drives all open. Never had a problem before. But recently I noticed a strange Freeze which froze the cursor. Nothing was operable. So I had to do a forced shut down (manually with the power button). I couldn't do an Option Escape Quit, since the keyboard was frozen as well. I wasn't too concerned about losing changes in the FCP Project File because they were minor.
Well, (with some difficulty), I finally got Disk Utility to recognize each external drive (one at a time), until it finally recognized and performed disk permissions with each drive sucessfully, (no repairs neccessary), including the two internal drives.
I'm wondering if perhaps my Video Card is starting to go? Why do I say that?
Because I don't hear the fan making it's usual noise for an ATI 9800 Mac Pro. It's usually pretty noisy (that's just the nature of the 9800).
Any other guesses? Remember that Disk Utility now recognizes all drives. But it froze initially.
    Thanks
    Mike

I would make sure the external HDs don't have a sleep function as well.
Are you daisy chaining the external drives or are you trying to use more than one firewire bus when you only have one firewire bus?
You have two internal drives according to your profile, can you use one of those drives as a media drive and forget about the externals?
When you repaired your disk permissions did you restart your system drive?
I'm at work and am about to leave. I will check in when I get home, but you will no doubt find someone to trouble shoot this with you by that time.

  • Strange freezing/force quit doesn't work 100%

    hey all...
for the past few weeks, i have been having this strange problem...
starting with EXCEL, but now on other programs like iphoto, itunes, and even finder...
    sometimes programs just freeze...
    spinning beach ball forever...
when i go to force quit, the program closes, but still stay listed in the force quit window as "program not responding"...
as well, the little light blue dot under the program icon in the dock stays "open"...
once force quit, the program can't be launched again...
and the only thing to do is restart the computer...
note: this only happens to one program at a time...ie: if it is happening in, say, excel, but other programs are open, they will run fine...
    any ideas?
    i have repaired permissions...
    thanks,
    hb

    hello again...
    still having the same problem...
tried creating a new user, but i confess, haven't spent as much time trying things out in that account...
i did however, reinstall os 10.5, and imported everything from a time machine backup (just so i knew i was running with a fresh OS)...
and also, ran REMBER which said the RAM was good...
even monitored the computer in CONSOLE to see if anything looked odd when an application crashed. nothing memorable yielded.
one curiosity, is that when i repair permissions, it finds hundreds to correct....
    says "repair permissions complete"...
but then, i can run the process again right away, and it still finds 100's to correct.
this seems odd to me, and i wonder if a permissions problem is to blame.
but short of repairing them (or trying to) i don't know what to do...

  • Strange freezing/display problem

    Hi,
I've recently started having some strange problems with my 24" iMac 2.16GHz.
What happens is the screen freezes, not just the application I'm working in, but the entire screen. If I move the mouse it looks like the screen tries to redraw itself so I might get a browser window half-duplicated and then other windows look like they leave a trail if you try to move them. I can't click on anything, I can move the mouse for about 10 seconds, then I get the coloured beachball and I have to restart from the back.
A couple of times when I've restarted there has been a high pitched tone before the start-up chime.
I can't say exactly what I was doing when the crashes happened but a couple of times I've been looking at videos on YouTube. It may be related, I'm not 100% sure though.
I can't really explain it any better than that, sorry it's not as clear as it might be. I can't take a screenshot or anything when it happens.
I've run Disk Utility from the OS CD to repair the disk and it didn't find any problems. I haven't installed any new hardware or anything like that.
If anyone had any idea what I might try to find out what's going on I'd really appreciate it.
    Thanks.

Sorry to bump this but this issue is still ongoing with me.
I'm nearly positive it is caused by watching videos on YouTube, Googlevideo etc. It just happened again while on YouTube. Screenshot - http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/342/screeniu8.jpg
After about 20 seconds I can click around and the screen goes back to normal when I move the windows. It's almost like using the eraser tool in Photoshop or something, you can 'wipe out' the bits that are not where they're supposed to be.
Yesterday I reinstalled the OS, I did an erase and install as well. Does this mean my graphics card is the problem?
Any advice on this would be a great help because I've got a huge amount of work at the moment and this is proving really disruptive (and before you say it I was taking a break when watching that YouTube thing!).
    thanks

  • MSI K9AGM4-L - Strange freezing issue with games

I built this low budget computer for my friend, and it has a strange bug. The parts are:
    MSI K9AGM4-L motherboard
    X2 64 4600+ AM2 processor + stock cooler
    2 x 1gb Kingston 667 DDR2
    PNY 7600GT PCI-E
Antec Solo Quiet case + 12cm fan
    HEC 350W power
Tested with WinXP SP2 and Vista 64Bit
Bug: Everything works ok, but everytime I start a game (IL-2 1946 for example) it freezes continuosly.
OK, I thought it was a temp issue, but...
    - I've played IL-2 1946 for over 200 hours with that card, when it was on my own computer and it never had any issues. I have the exact same Antec case on my own computer, with one 12cm fan.
    - That power doesn't feel hot at all after it has been on for over an hour or so.
    - Processor temp never exceeds 47-49C when playing, so can't be it either.
    - SATA harddrive temp is 47C according to "Everest".
The only thing that seems hot to touch is the NB heatsink (which is very small on this mobo, btw). So I made this test: I used an open case and put this huge 40cm fan next to it and played the game. It still started to freeze even though the heatsink wasn't very hot.
I also thought it's something with the drivers/software, so I tested everything with Vista 64bit + different drivers/software, didn't help. Also I tested one ATI card, same symptoms.
I also checked that the NB heatsink is properly seated.
SO.... any ideas what can cause this? Is it the NB afterall, that needs a better heatsink...or?
Any help to solve this will be welcomed, thanks in advance.

"But I've ran a P4 2.8 computer with that PSU for over a year without any issues at all."
That doesn't prove anything. Don't trust to cheap PSU's.
Also for your current build its too weak:
    HEC-350LD-T. AC Input: 115/230V~, 50~60Hz, 8/5A, Fuse Rating: T8AL, 250V~.
    DC Output: +3.3V~20A, +5V~33, +12V~15A. +5Vsb~2A, -5V~1A, -12V~1A. MAX OUTPUT POWER: 350W. +5V&3.3V Combined 180W.
Get a single rail PSU with high amperes on +12V +30A or above.

  • Imported video has strange squiggly effect when there is motion

    Hey everyone,
I am trying to edit and put together a video from our honeymoon. I am brand new to macs, and the whole editing business. Unfortunately I have a Samsung SC-MX10 camcorder which is dreadful as far as mac compatibility goes. According to my research, it saves video in the MPEG-4 format using the SEDG codec.
So I finally was able to get all the files onto my mac (iMovie doesn't sync with the camcorder) and they are all .avi files. I downloaded Perian and I am able to view the files with quicktime. However, getting them into iMovie was a different story.
With much more research online, I downloaded QTAmateur which is supposedly a free version of QuickTime Pro, and I have several video converting options available. Among the list, I chose to convert them to quicktime videos. When I open up these converted files in QuickTime, they work perfectly. HOWEVER, when I import them to iMovie, they suddenly have this strange "squiggly" look whenever there is motion in the video. It gets really bad, and i don't want to have this in my final product. Does anyone know why it is doing this, or how I can fix it?
If anyone can figure this out it would be AMAZING!
    THANKS!

That's DV video for you - it runs at 13GB per hour. Your cam highly compresses the video to the MPEG4 format, which actually is detrimental to the quality of the video image.
Onu Marx stated that iMovie HD would give you better results. I think he meant to say iMovie HD6 and you may see some difference, as 08 uses single field processing, which eliminates every other line in a frame, whereas HD6 uses the whole frame. iMovie HD6 is a free download for owners of iLfe 08:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/iMovieHD6
If you are unhappy with all this extra work you need to do to edit from the Samsung, I suggest you look for a new cam, preferably a miniDV tape cam with firewire, which will work seemlessly with all iMovie versions and give you great lossless DV right off the bat.
With reference to your question - "Is there no other format . . . NO.

  • MBP not recovering from sleep / Strange 'freezing' crashing...

I'm having a VERY strange issue here.
Over the past week, my MBP (only 4 months old?) has become suddenly unable to recover from sleep. I'll be watching a movie in FrontRow, 'sleep' it from my Apple remote, and then when it re-awakens, the screen fires up but it's black (as in, the backlight is obviously on and drive/fan spins up, but no image on display).
Then, just tonight, I've been working on some websites, nothing too intensive, maybe running iTunes and Safari in the background alongside 'DreamWeaver', and the whole system just FROZE. I can't type, I can't move the cursor, the screen is completely frozen. I kept waiting for the familiar 'kernel panic' screen to appear or something, but I've never seen any Apple machine do this before...
It's kinda worrying as I'm not particularly stressing the machine or anything.... any ideas??

Try setting your SMC controller - especially if its a wake and sleep related issue.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Likewise in Utilities, open 'Console' to look at your logs. There will be diagnostic messages (I hope) about the crash.
You could also run the activity monitor to make sure processes aren't topping out and hogging the CPU.

  • Strange freezing problem

I'm not sure where this goes, but it seems to fit here for now. I have had a weird problem with my G5 here at work for a long time. Sometimes when I move the mouse or click a mouse button, the machine freezes -- at least I think it does. I know the display freezes, but I can still hear the hard disk in there doing its thing, so I know the machine is still going. This usually happens while I'm browsing the web with Firefox, but sometimes I'll click a box in Quark or some other app and my whole world just stops.
This all started a year or two ago when I saw something about a G5 processor firmware upgrade in Software Update. Being a total newbie to the Mac platform at the time, I was given to installing whatever Software Update told me to install without investigating further. After installing this firmware upgrade, I started noticing these inexplicable freezes.
Could the freezes be related to the upgrade? Can I roll it back? Is there any other solution? I love my machine and, aside from this minor (actually major) annoyance, it's the most advanced and smoothest-working machine in the building.
    Jeremy

    Jeremy:
One more question about your system: How much free space do you have on the HDD?
In terms of maintenance and diagnostics the article by Gulliver I linked earlier has good advice and links to freeware that can be helpful. It also suggests a schedule for maintenance. Dr. Smoke's FAQ on Maintaining Mac OS X is even more comprehensive and can be very useful in maintaining your computer's good health. Dr. Smoke's FAQ Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption also has suggestions that might be helpful to you in your current situation.
The first place to start with all this would be the step I already mentioned in terms of Repairing Disk with Disk Utility. You might want to download freeware like MacJanitor which is a simple low-cost way to do Unix Maintenance (CRON cleaning). I see you have Cocktail on your HDD. Check it out to see what it can do for you. (Be sure you read Dr. Smoke's caution about Cache Cleaning before you attempt that procedure).
This is a lot of stuff, and you likely won't get to it all at once. Let me know how it goes with Disk Repair, and whether the freezing probably persists.
    Good luck.

  • READER X Freezing effects

    Hi,
This topic is to be reconciled with this one : http://forums.adobe.com/message/3787868#3787868
This behaviour has very bad side effects as I am going to describe :
    - With Reader X installed one can reproduce the basic behaviour opening a windows (XP: I've not tried with any other OS) file explorer where some .pdf are present. If one mouses over one of those pdf files, generally on the first one, you can see briefly a hourglass mouse icon (for half a second or even less) appearing. If at the same time you have MS tasks manager open, you can see (but even with a maximized refreshing rate it's so brief that it can hardly be seen) 2 processes "acrord32.exe" coming up (if you order the tasks by the most processor ressources consuming).
The purpose of this is a bit described in the referenced link, but anyway that doesn't matter.
    - Now if you try to attach a file in a new message in thunderbird (probably it is reproductible with other mail clients as the window which is open is a standard MS explorer and file picking modal window) and if in the directory you have some pdf files (amongst others) as long as your mouse flies over one of those pdf files even if you choose to abandon your file choice, the explorer window hangs and so does thunderbird. This lasts for some minutes (5 to 10 minutes) which is very very annoying.
If, inside the directory where you have some pdf files, you (take care) do not fly your mouse over one of the pdf files, then the file picking works and the explorer modal window returns and thunderbird doesn't hang.
I have tryed to solve that without success (for 2 days now) cause I have a lot of PCs which have the same behaviour and it is very unpleasant for those who meet the problem.
    notes:
    * trying to get rid of this by unregistering some adobe reader dll file with 'regsvr32 "%CommonProgramFiles%\Adobe\Acrobat\ActiveX\pdfshell.dll" /u' as given in the previous subject doesn't work (as it was said by sam878 because when lauching adobe reader the program sees that there is something wrong with the installation and it reinstalls itself).
    * trying to modify Adobe reader preferences (search category and deactivate quick research) doesn't solve the problem.
    * XP sp3 is concerned for all the PCs on which this happens.
    * I disabled any anti-virus sofware (in my case MS Security Essential) and some services which were useless.
Thanks for those who will answer

I did not see the reader forum when I was mapping this topic, but I will move it (create a new one?) there. Thx.
I have Windows 7 Enterprise. I am not sure the other topic applies to me as it is referring to Premier Pro 2.0. I will continue in the Reader forums, though. Thanks again.

  • Strange blurry effect - Premiere Pro CS4

It looks like I'm still far away from a standard, steady and predictable workflow because every now and then something strange occurs and mess up my work.
Now I'm dealing with h.264 video. The problem occurs on my output video in a form of messed up frame. Every few seconds I get blurry picture which is repeating in intervals of aprox. 1 sec. The original video is 640x360px, 15 fps while the output video has same dimensions but is 30 fps.
Without any filters applied this is a straight forward project, but it gives me a headache.
I'm doing it wrong somewhere and I'd appreciate your help on this one.
    Thanks,
    Mat

How about listing your hardware and operating system?
    >Every few seconds I get blurry picture
If something is happening "Every few seconds" my 1st thought would be a hardware problem or some other software getting in the way
    >original video is 640x360px, 15 fps while the output video has same dimensions but is 30 fps
Hmm... I've never done that, but it LOOKS to me like you are asking PPro to "create something out of nothing" to double the frame rate... maybe that is not working for some reason...???
But... list the complete environment where PPro is running

  • Strange email effect...help?

Can someone tell me why if I scroll down to the bottom of a long email message, then simply move to the next [long] email message (without scrolling back to the top of the message), I find myself far down the next message's body rather than at the start? Or, if not why this happens, can anyone tell me a fix to this little annoyance?
    Thanks

A workaround is to display messages in their own individual windows rather than at the bottom of the Message Viewer window. (To close the message "pane" at the bottom of the M.V. window, either drag the divider bar with the dot all the way to the bottom or double-click on it. Then double-click on a message in the M.V. list to open it in its own window.)
Alternately, you can open more than one M.V. window at a time, & achieve much the same effect.
Personally, I like the message-in-its-own-window option much better than seeing them squeezed into the M.V. list, I guess because so few of the messages I get are short enough to fit into the M.V. pane. It would be perfect for me if the message windows had "next" & "previous" buttons ... maybe that will appear in the next version....
