Strange Gradient Stroke Behavior on Some Path Corners
Hello All,
I'm a Photoshop user who has recently started learning Illustrator for a project. I am experiencing a strange behavior where some of the corners of a path with a gradient stroke overlap. In some of the corners, the stroke does not bend cleanly but leaves a strange artifact on the path (the stroke acts normally on the rest of the path including similarly angled corners). I am including pictures to illustrate what I mean.
The stroke I am using has a linear gradient applied across it. The stroke starts with a solid color (black) with a hard edge against a gradient from green to transparent. Sometimes the artifact is on the transparent side of the stroke (first image), but sometimes it's on the hard edge side (2nd image - this is actually the same corner with the anchors manipulated). In the third image, you can see the issue on both the "transparent" edge (though as you can see in this image, it isn't actually transparent in places where the stroke overlaps itself) and the solid edge.
I've done a lot of digging to try to find similar issues and tried many solutions - toggled snap to grid for the object, looked into miter limits, caps, and corners (I am using rounded corners), checked for stray anchors, changed points from corner to rounded, etc. Any advice is appreciated!
Thank you very much for your time and input!
Best,
Alexis
But you can get that effect by layering several stroke attributes in the Appearance Panel. For example, make the black on a different stroke layer, where you can control it separately from the green (ok, I'm color blind).

Illustrator CS6 Mirror or resize -100% messes up my offset path gradient stroke.
When I try to mirror a graphic using offset path to a gradient stroke(I use offset path so I can use "Apply Gradient Across Stroke" option) or use resize and type -100% to have it flip, it messes up my stroke.
Here is an image of what is happening when I flip my graphic.
I flipped the tear to the opposite side. I tried restarting Illustrator, my computer, using a new file, updated Illustrator, nothing fixed this problem.
Also, is there a better way to use gradient stroke, within, along and across and still being able to use the Align Stroke Inside, and Outside without having to use offset stroke and using Align Stroke to Center
- Patrick Danielsuse transform effect instead under the effect panel. in the transform effect select flip across x axis and make 1 copy.

Is it possible to cut or erase part of a gradient stroke? The attached image shows a. the stroke I need to cut and b. the stroke as I would like it to appear - (at the moment I have just covered it(b) with white fill. I have tried Epanding, Outlining path and Flattening, but with no luck.Thanks in advance.

Gradient mesh dying, CS 6 gradient stroke gonna take over?
Hi just wondering,
I had a look at the CS6 sneak peek video and thought to myself will there be any use for a gradient mesh now since you can use a gradient stroke to fill in colors to the contours of a shape?
Anyone played around with it enough to tell me what would be the major disadvantage or advantage between a gradient mesh vs a gradient stroke?Can't do anythign close to this with a gradient stroke or gradient fill.
I think, if anything, they may elimiante the need for blends a bit and provide better options for some situations. With a gradient stroke you can easily blend two flat colors to each other simply via the stroke.
And it does make directional cradients a snap with the "along" setting.
And you can somewhat fake conical gradients with a thick stroke. -
[svn:fx-trunk] 7155: Line bug fixes when using gradient strokes

Log Message:
Line bug fixes when using gradient strokes
SDK-21272 - Lines with gradient (LinearGradientStroke) draw as solid color if perfectly vertical / horizontal
StrokedElement was not taking the stroke weight into account when passing the bounds to the stroke. The gradient strokes rely on the bounds to help them transform the gradient to fit the shape of the stroke.
SDK-21274 - Line with gradient stroke does not draw properly
This bug occurs when the Line has a non-zero x and/or y values and is sharing a DisplayObject. StrokedElement was passing the stroke the measuredX and measuredY position as part of the bounds. Instead, I've changed it to pass in drawX + measuredX and drawY + measuredY which accounts for the drawing offset position.

The proposed selected index is selected, but does not apply the same skin as when mouse is on rollover or item is selected due to up and down keys.
The issue seems like updating the status of the item renderer to rollover or selected to get the same skin applied.

Strange Navigation Bar Behavior
Hi, I'm currently designing a web page for non-profit
government organization.
Unfortunately, I'm running into some strange behavioral
problems with the navigation bar.
The tabs in my navigation bar run from left to right. As the
links are visited through the navigation bar, the links to the left
of which ever link is active stop working. I can't for the life of
me figure out why!
The pages are arranged in such a way that each page involves
three html files. One body file, one navigation bar file with it's
respective tab hilighted, and a little file that simply loads the
two, one on top of the other. The tabs in the navigation bar are
linked to the file that then loads the body and navigation(of
course). Clicking on a tab to the right of the active tab loads
everything perfectly. However, if the active tab is the right-most
tab, the tabs to the left no longer work properly. They seem to
reload the navigation bar, but the body gets left behind and the
URL still appears to be that of the right-most tab.
Here is an example of my site in progress:
Site in
Progress
By going through the four tabs at the top, you can quickly
see things are going wrong.
The drop-down menu can be used to access the same pages that
the navigation bar refuses to load.
If you could please take a look at the site and reply with
any comments or suggestions as to what might be going wrong or what
I could do to fix it, I would be very grateful.
Note that I previously read something about strange
navigation bar behavior being caused by image names beginning with
numbers. This isn't what's happening here as my image names are all
"image 1" etc.
Also note that I'm using dreamweaver8
Thank you in advance for your help.

- [email protected]Well thanks for the suggestion, but that's not actually the
problem I'm having.
The newsletter link along with all that other stuff on the
left hand side is just stuff I havn't gotten to yet.
The problem I'm having is with the navigation tabs at the TOP
of the page(policies, forms, info and M.R.)! I know the links for
those tabs are correct, because I can see from hovering over the
tabs that they're pointing in the right direction, and if it's the
policies page(leftmost tab at the top) I'm on, all the tabs to the
right work perfectly. The problem is that when I'm on any other
page (such as the M.R. page which is the rightmost tab), all the
tabs to the left of it mysteriously stop working!
As I said, just quickly click back and forth through the four
tabs at the top of the page and you'll see what the problem is. In
fact, completely ignore everything that isn't those four tabs at
the top of the page, because everything else is unfinished.
Please help! Thanks! -
Fireworks Automation: Applying a Stroke (Brush) to a Path That Doesn't Have One
I've tried setting various brush properties to apply a stroke
to an existing path that doesn't have one, but so far nothing
works. My code looks like this (it's contained within a while
loop):
currentselection[0].pathAttributes.brush.feedback="brush"
or:
currentselection[0].pathAttributes.brush.diameter=1
Everything I've tried produces an error. Can anyone point me
in the right direction?
Bill GreggThanks for the suggestion. I think I've solved my problem
using the setBrushNColor method.
I'm relying heavily on the sample scripts that accompany
Fireworks. I've put 'em all into one text file and I search it. And
sometimes I google a method or property name and see what turns up
(usually not much). So if I can't turn up a specific example of how
a method is used, sometimes I can't figure out how to use it. I
think I tried using setBrush, but couldn't get the parameters
right. So finally I fell back on using the "Copy Steps" command in
the history palette. Using that, I got:
fw.getDocumentDOM().setBrushNColor({alphaRemap:"none",
angle:0, antiAliased:true, aspect:100, blackness:0,
category:"bc_Pencil", concentration:100, dashOffSize1:2,
dashOffSize2:2, dashOffSize3:2, dashOnSize1:8, dashOnSize2:1,
dashOnSize3:1, diameter:1, feedback:"brush", flowRate:0,
maxCount:15, minSize:1, name:"bn_1-Pixel Anti-Aliased",
numDashes:0, shape:"circle", softenMode:"bell curve", softness:0,
spacing:15, textureBlend:0, textureEdge:0,
tipColoringMode:"random", tipCount:1, tipSpacing:0,
tipSpacingMode:"random", type:"simple" }, "#000000");
Apparently none of the parameters are optional--it gives an
error if I try to pare down the list. Not very elegant, but it gets
the job done.
And after a while I figured out that some of the commands I
wanted to use could not be targeted to anything but the selection,
so I've started filling arrays with lists of items I want to
change, then applying the command--just like you're doing in the
sample you sent. That technique is working well so far.
As for the multiple-paragraph text boxes, I've just kicked
that problem down the road a bit. I realized that that in the files
we'll be dealing with, there probably won't be that many
multiple-paragraph text boxes. I'll have to work on it eventually,
but it's dropped down the to-do list for now. Thanks for the
suggestion--it'll be my starting point when I get back to that
problem.
What kinds of things are you trying to do with JavaScript in
Fireworks?

How do I create transparent text with gradient stroke?
I'm creating text that will be printed on a deep gray to black tshirt.
I created text, added an offset path to it with a gradient, and a deep gray color fill on top, achieving the gradient stroke. However, I'm not exactly sure what color the shirt itself will be, other than deep gray to black. And I didn't want the deep gray/black fill in my text to appear and look awkward on the shirt. Unless that is something I shouldn't be considered about.
To be safe, how would you create transparent text with a gradient stroke? I'm using Illustrator CS5.aimsrandom,
Based on a guess that you wish to have the stroke fade into the basic tshirt colour, you may use transparency rather than colour.
But the transparent text in the headline raises a few questions.
No fill colour for the Type/text, or different fill and (basic) stroke colour, or? -
Hello
I was trying to get a gradient stroke to a text using the Photoshop Live Effects but it seems I can only set the gradient to be black/white
I would like to know how can I chage that
Below is what I did so far
Now I would like the cradient colors to be for example red and blue or to add 3 or more color to it!
Is it possible?A gradient you can't change isn't very useful, is it. Odd.
Well, I managed something much more complicated, but it will allow you to create a color gradient even if you want bold text.
It's a Fireworks .png, so you can copy it and open it up. Layer 2 is the visible result; Layer 1 has copies of the components so you can see them individually.
Start with three copies of the word "Text." The green one does not have the Photoshop Live Effects gradient stroke. For the other two, one has white text and one has black text. Make sure to copy and then not move any of the text elements. Turn off their visibility for working, because you need them to stay aligned.
For the one with black text, the gradient stroke is white on top. If we use this for a mask, we can create the gradient fade where the object is white, going to transparent where the object is black. I layered this over a blue rectangle then used the text object as a mask. (Select black text object with stroke and blue rectangle, then menu Modify > Mask > Group as Mask.) This gives me a fading blue outline at the top of the text.
To make a mask for the lower part of the gradient, we need that to be white, but it's black. Take the text object with the white text and invert it with menu Filters > Adjust Color > Invert. This will create a bitmap from the vector object, but it will work just fine. I took this bitmap and used it as a mask for a red rectangle. This gives me a fading red outline at the bottom of the text.
Pretty complex, but it gets the effect on bold text as well as any other shape you might apply the filter to.
Hmm. A fading blue outline over a straight red outline would probably work too! Just thought of that. -
Creating a "contour gradient" stroke effect
I've been trying to achieve this tracing gradient stroke in Photoshop. It might not even be a stroke but a bevel, but I can't seem to get the same effect. I have a picture with the effect.
http://www.the-games-blog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/megamanzerologo.jpg
Is this possible to do in Photoshop?but I can't seem to get the same effect. I have a picture with the effect.
Because it wasn't done in Photoshop. This very clearly is based on vector artwork and one would use e.g. Art Brushes in Illustrator to create the metallic shading. Of course you can do that in PS using gradient overlay layer styles and the gradient fill, but it's not gonna be something where you simply flip a switch in a layer style. Sorry to burst your bubble, but this will require to treat the individual contours separately and split them up in to, bottom and curved areas, each with individual gradients.

Very Strange Internet Access Behavior After upgrade to systemd
Currently I'm having very strange issues with my wireless connection. Currently, if I connect using netcfg to a wireless access point, I have the following behavior:
1. chromium can connect to any website
2. thunderbird can send/receive emails
3. curl, firefox and opera can connect to some https sites but not http (yes: https://www.facebook.com, https://bbs.archlinux.org, no: https://archlinux.org, https://github.com)
4. wget does not connect, neither does pacman -Syu
after I upgraded to systemd, I was getting errors because of groups, so I removed extra groups. Here's what I have now:
There is currently no rc.conf in /etc
$ id ambantis
uid=1000(ambantis) gid=100(users) groups=100(users)
$ id root
uid=0(root) gid=0(root) groups=0(root),1(bin),2(daemon),3(sys),4(adm),19(log),1000(wheel)
If I try to remove the wheel group, then netcfg does not allow me to connect, neither can I connect manually with wpa_supplicant and dhcpcd
Here's the output of $ systemctrl

Safari 5.1 strange auto-reloading behavior for tabs in the background
hi guys.
I have been encountering this strange behavior recently. I had thought it could be something wrong with my system, until yesterday i upgraded my Safari for Windows to the v.5.1 on a Windows XP laptop, and found the same issue. Now i guess I can be quite certain this is a safari issue.
System info:
1. Macbook Pro 17", OSX 10.6.8, 64bit boot (i have 8GB RAM).
2. Safari (Mac) is the lastest version (as updated by the Auto update), run in the default 64bit mode.
3. The windows machine is an old Thinkpad T60 with Windows XP Pro SP3. The Safari for windows is Safari 5.1 (7534.50), also updated by auto update.
4. I have not installed any Safari extensions/plugs that feature an auto-reloading -- as such behavior was never seen before i upgrade to Safari 5.1
Since i mostly work on mac the mac has been kept most updated. But the windows machine which i use now and then, i don't update everything very frequently. And the earlier Safari 5.0 worked fine without the current issue.
Symptoms
1. Let's say I have 1 Safari window open with 5 tabs, and I have been working on the 4th tab for a while, and left the other 4 tabs "idling" in the background.
2. And then i want to switch to another tab: click on that tab, and that tab will come to the foreground while being automatically refreshed.
3. It looks to me this behavior happens after the inactive tabs have been idling longer than a certain period of time - then if you switch to them, they will be switched to and in the same time auto-reloaded. But I still don't know how long it needs for the "idling" before an auto-reloading "threshold" is triggered.
4. In the beginning this was just on the Mac Safari (and i hadn't updated safari on the windows). But after I updated safari for WIN yesterday, i found the same behavior today.
5. I checked all the Preferences settings and didnt find any option that indicates this behaviors.
Guys. any ideas? anyone have the same trouble? Thanks a lot guys. This is really annoying.Carolyn Samit wrote:
I'm running Safari 5.1 / SL v10.6.8 on one Mac with Glims installed and I never have a problem with tabs auto reloading. You might want to give it a try.
It's free!

Once the software is installed you can access the settings from Safari / Preferences - Glims.
If you don't like the software you can use their uninstaller here.
Hi Carolyn thanks a lot for the idea.
The weird thing is... after i tried to uninstall and re-install a few apps the "auto-loading" behavior disappeared ... guess something was interfereing with safari 5.1...
But thanks for recommending Glims. I took a quick look at the website and it looks great. will do some more research before i start using it. Thanks for the recomm! -
Strange alpha channel behavior in jscroll pane
Hi,
My first post here.
I have been strugling for a while with a problem with alpha channel opacity and scrollpane. I basically have a JScrollpane that contains a JPanel with JLabels. The JLabels have a mouse action that changes their background to higlighted by using a color with an alpha channel.
When a mouse is over a JLabel we call:
public void mouseOver(){
this.setForeground(Color.WHITE);
this.setBackground(new Color(100,100,100,100));
this.setOpaque(true);
This works but with some strange rendering problems. Sometimes the "background" shows other parts of the screen insted of the correct background. This is kind of hard to explain so I took a screen shot that elaborates this.
The correct behavior:
http://www.rulli.org/~mravimo/seka/correct.jpg
The wrong bahavior:
http://www.rulli.org/~mravimo/seka/wrong.jpgI think there seems to some abuse of the 'opaque' setting in Java. Opaque, literally, of course, describes something through which nothing can be seen (if you can see through it, it's either translucent or transparent). That means alpha 0 is transparent, alpha 255 (for an 8-bit channel) is opaque, and anything else is translucent.
ComponentUI uses 'opaque' to determine whether to paint the component background. This is where the semantics are broken: it should really query the background color to see if it's non-null and its alpha is non-zero, thus painting translucent colors as well as opaque. I think there is a good case for this being a Java bug if it's not already - though I'd anticipate the counter-argument being that it will raise issues with backward-compatibility ("if it's been broken long enough, don't fix it").
The problem you're seeing, I suspect, is due to the same flag being used (semantically correctly) to help optimise the paint process (if something really is opaque then there's no point rendering underneath it).
Unfortunately, fixing ComponentUI is a non starter since it can only be fixed by extension (multiply the number of components by the number of L&Fs and you're on your way).
As a workaround you can extend JLabel and override paintComponent(); or plug in a specific label UI which fixed the ComponentUI problem; in both cases leaving the opaque setting at false. -
Strange select statement behavior in start routine during extraction
Hi, All..
I'm receiving some odd behavior from a select statment being processed in batch mode (specifically, when run in a normal BW extractor - start routine), the select yields no results .. sy-subrc = 4 and target itab is empty. however, when i run this same select statement in debug, i get sy-subrc = 0 and records are returned!! I tried putting the select statement in a standard abap program & it came back successfully in both foreground & background. something is strange when run in the BW extractor process?? anyone familiar with this?? any help is appreciated!! Thanks!!Thanks everyone for the comments!
The code is in the start routine from 0BBP_CONF_TD_1 into 0BBP_CON.
-The select returns records when in debug
-I've tried running it open without the "for all entries" & it still fails in batch
-The select works during the delta but always fails on the initial load
The select is a join:
