Strange graphic when booting up iMac with OS X  10.8.5

We just purchased a used iMac with following specs: OSX 10.8.5, 2.93 GHz Intel Core i7, 16GB memory. After installing some software, I was rebooting system. When I did, a strange graphic (not the Apple startup graphic) came onto the screen (moving image). Hard to describe - looks sort of like the 'test pattern' graphic. Nothing booted up while it was showing. I had to force quit the system. I powered up again, and all was fine. What does this mean?

  • Holding down the option key when booting my iMac lo longer shows me my bootable external drives, the system just boots up to the main system. Also, holding down command, option,P,R no longer zaps the p-ram. the system just boots up.

Holding down the option key when booting my iMac lo longer shows me my bootable external drives, the system just boots up to the main system. Also, holding down command, option,P,R no longer zaps the p-ram. the system just boots up normally. Why do these key fonctions no longer work?

It could be your timing if on a bluetooth keyboard.  I find it best to hit the keys as soon as i hear the chime, release and hit them again but this time holding them before the chime ends....like a fake pump in football.
But....you can always open up system preferences, startup disk, and select your bootable clone for booting.  If it doesn't show up there, the Mac doesn't think it's bootable.

  • MacBook pro Extremely long booting time After 10.10.1 + strange icons when booting

    Hi all,
since the Yosemite update and the sequential patch, I've been experiencing lots and lots of issues with this releade
    I posses a
    MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012)
    2,5 GHz Intel Core i5
After a week after the Yosemite update my Mac just froze, and for a couple of days I was unable to access it. after 4 attempts of Clean install i was finally able to restore it. but the issue with long booting time and free after sleep/wake action are the same .
I'm experiencing strange icons during boot as follows:
Only after a second reboot and clearing ram with Cmd+Alt+P+R i'm able to get rid of this , and the reboot shows this
That after 5 mins changes into this
This routine keeps happening, every single time i have to restart my mac.
    Any suggestions?
    tnks

Well , i guess i a HDD issue, when i was experiencing the initial issues with yosemite , I've installed the system an external Hdd and everything was working fine.
So i guess my suspicions were correct. I have to change my hdd.

  • Graphics Firmware update for iMac with with NVIDIA GeForce 7300 or 7600 GT

I am one of the many with an 06 24" iMac that has the graphics card glitch. Downloaded and installed this firmware update today and worked all day with no issues. The update says it is for users that are running Windows 7 in boot camp.
Is this coincidental and the firmware fixed the issue so many of us have with these iMacs with the NVIDIA cards or did I just jinx myself and my problems are bound to return?
Guess I will know soon enough!
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL978

I've seen all sorts graphics problems mentioned. Apple sells millions of Macs per years, so any potential problem is bound to happen to at least a few customers. Assuming that people can read your mind is not a very good way to get responses.
On the other hand, if you describe the problem in detail, people reading the forum and looking for solutions may actually find your post through a keywords search, and your finding about installing the firmware update for Windows 7 may help then too, after confirming their problem is similar to your problem.
    But that's up to you...

  • Very STRANGE Graphic Effect on Early IMAC G5 Model

I am not a Mac genius, and I am having a very strange problem when I install 10.4 on my IMAC G5. The entire screen appears choppy. Although the systems works, the visuals (screensavers, fonts, icons, general display) are practically ineligible because they are broken & scattered all over the screen.
I got my IMAC G5 in November 2004. Its specs are:
    1.6Ghz PPC
768 MB of RAM (I do have a 512MB third party one)
    GeForce FX 5200, 64MB

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Sounds like your graphics chipset needs repair. That's a logicboard related issue. I hope you have AppleCare. Because the logicboards for those machines cost a fair bit.

  • Help! Syncmaster 1100 blurry when connected to Imac with Mini DVI to Vga

    Hi,
I recently tried to use my Samsung SyncMaster 1100 (21") as a secondary display But when I connect it with the mini dvi to vga adapter to my imac the image looks blurry. Is there some compatibility isue with syncmaster 1100?
Please Help!, I tryed the imac with a different secondary monitor and it works fine. I tested my syncmaster with another pc and it works fine. I don't know what else to do.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Josh,
To start, it is considered extremely impolite to type in all capital letters as you have done. Please use all lower case, or preferably properly capitalised text, in future.
With regards to the problem you're having.. the reason you only see the desktop background is due to screen spanning. If you want the external display to display the same thing as the internal display, go to the displays system preferences pane, and check the box that says "Mirroring"
The color problem is probably due to a loose connection somewhere, either between the iMac and its adaptor, the adaptor and the cable to the projector, or between the projector and the cable plugging into it. If you're still having problems, try different adaptor cables, or try plugging it into a different monitor to try to work out which one is causing a problem.
    Good luck

  • Strange behaviour when using connection pooling with proxy authentication

    All
I have developed an ASP.NET 1.1 Web application that uses ODP.NET 9.2.0.4 accessing Oracle Database 8i (which is to be upgraded to 10g in the coming months). I have enabled connection pooling and implemented proxy authentication.
I am observing a strange behaviour in the live environment. If two users (User 1 and User 2) are executing SQL statements at the same time (concurrent threads in IIS), the following is occurring:
    * User 1 opens a new connection, executes a SELECT statement, and closes this connection. The audit log, which uses the USER function, shows User 1 executed this statement.
    * User 2 opens the same connection (before it is released to the connection pool?), excutes an INSERT statement, and closes this connection. The audit log shows User 1, not User 2, executed this statement.
Is this a known issue when using connection pooling with proxy authentication? I appreciate your help.
    Regards,
    Chris

    Hi Chris,
I tried to reproduce your complaint, but was unable to. I didnt use auditting however, just a series of "select user from dual" with proxy authentication. You might want to see if you can put together a small complete testcase for this and open a sr with support.
    Cheers

  • Strange behavior when creating a document with an "html" node

A strange thing is happening here. I'm using the javax.xml.transform.Transformer to save some XML documents. I can create documents with any arbitrary DOM tree I want, but if I have the root node have a name of "html". somehow the Transformer decides to apply its own HTML rules and handles it differently from all other document types. The problem is that its html-specific rules are not what I want. Specifically, it is doing things like outputting <br> instead of
, putting in meta-equiv tags that I don't want, etc. This is all bad because I'm not writing HTML. I'm writing carrier-specific mobile xhtml documents and I don't want the javax.xml.transform.Transformer to be "helping" me out any.
There must be some way to get this under control. Can anyone advise me?
    Thanks

I think I solved the problem: I need to put this line in:
transformer.setOutputProperty(OutputKeys.METHOD, "xml");and that does the trick, and forces it to not get fancy when it's outputting <html>. I suppose there's a way of setting that in the TransformerFactory so I don't have to set it in every individual transformer I create but that's a minor issue.

There is a great chance you might need service for that computer. Take a look at the link below and it tells you what the beeps actually mean. Two beeps and a blank screen after your cat knocked over the laptop onto the ground my guess is the system board that might be broken.

  • My ipod touch makes a strange noise when makes the synchronization with itunes

At first my ipod touch began doing strange noise in differents situations. Yesterday I try to solved it doing this: I connected it to itunes a made a restore. I thought it was solved, but today the noise came back.  I could identify when it happens. If the ipod is off and I plug the usb cable, itunes starts and the ipod turn on, then the first thing it do is connected to the wifi network, then syncronizations began and the strange noise is heard.
    Some idea?
Do you think it would be neccesary to visit an apple store to solve it. My ipod is even covered by warranty.
    Thank you very much.

  • Cannot boot up iMac with 10.6.8 Snow leopard

iMac 10.6.8 cannot get to boot up.  Had been getting 'startup disks full' but didn't know what to do about it.  Now, it boots up to the blue screen, apple, with the spinning disk, and the horizontal tube marker.  That tube gets about 1/4 inch full, and then erases it - and starts it again, again geting about 1/4 inch full, before it shuts completely down and goes black screen.  All that takes about 3 minutes.
I tried to hold the shift key down, but doesn't change anything.  I have the original Snow Leopard disc I upgraded from Leopard.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!  I am sending this from my older MacBook - also running 10.6.8.

If you have the Snow Leopard disk start the computer with that disk, insert it into the drive the restart your system while holding down the C key.  Then run disk utility on your hard drive to verify/repair it.  Take a look at his link, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1782?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

Unfortunatly, this produced the same result; however pci=noacpi got me past the garbled screen.  With this; however, I have no IDE hard drives or netork adapters.

  • Question mark appears when booting my iMac?

I've tried to do diskrepair, and found Time Capsule backup, just 2 days ago. But when I chose the Time capsule backup, my iMac didn't find my internal Hard Drive.
The reason that caused this problem is that the cable was pulled out.
Have anyone had similar problems, and know of any solutions or ideas how to fix it?

I see from your first post that you do have a Time Capsule backup - you may need it as it's sounding like the HD has failed .
If Internet Recovery (Command + Option + r whilst connected to the internet, ideally with a cable in preference to wifi, if it's an option) isn't working and not offering the Macintosh HD to install to you may need a trip to the workshop.
Maybe someone else on here with will have other ideas.
