Strange grinding noise

I have a Rev. A G5 Imac 20" with 1gig of ram running 10.4.6. I have noticed over the past 2-3 days a sort of grinding noise(that is the best way I can describe it) that revs up and then revs down just as quickly as it appears. It almost sounds like a fan is not balanced in its housing or something. The noise is very sporatic but at the same time it is very unnerving. It occurs regardless of cpu usage and if the fans are running fast under heavy use. The volume of the noise does not change if the screen is dimmer or brightened. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks

Hi W M R,
An SMU reset can certainly help with some forms of erratic fan behviour (reving up and down inappropriately, spinning continuously at high speed, etc). It does not seem likely to fix a "grinding noise", though.
On the other hand, excessive dirt on one of the fans could well produce this sort of sound. (The fans are "cage style" fans, built somewhat like a paddlesteamer wheel, and could well make such a sound if dirt builds up between the "paddles" and the cage, or if the dirt puts the whole fan out of balance).
Opening it up will provide you with an opportunity to see if this seems to be the problem. The "First Generation" and "ALS" models are very easy to open.
To give you some idea of the likelihood of dirty fans being an issue, I've cleaned mine twice within the first twelve months of ownership, with a reduction in noise levels on each occasion.
Cheers

  • Strange grinding noise from my superdrive on a specific disc!?!

This is very weird. When I insert a specific software disc into my superdrive, there is a grinding and buzzing sound...like there is a weed whacker inside the computer.
Again, this is really weird because no other disc has this problem...
It appears to be reading fine, albeit a little slower than normal.
Is it hurting the superdrive to run this disc? Does anyone know what would cause a disc specific behavior like this?

Two common possibilities is that the disk is reading with lots of errors causing the drive to re-read sectors, or that the data is poorly distributed across the disk and it has to do lots of reads to get it all.

  • HP 300 MFP M375 Grinding Noise and Strange Copy Quality Issue

We are having a copy quality problem with one of these units...  The machine will print bands across the page (not in direction of paper travel) of pretty much all 4 colors spaced out by 3 or 4 inches on most of the prints.  If you print a config page, the band is just black and happens on about 90% of the pages.  You might get one or two that don't exhibit the band but most do.  On color prints, you will always get a band, mostly multiples, of the different colors across the page.  Also, we have noticed a strange grinding noise coming from the lower front right side of the machine?  We removed all of the toner cartridges and the turned the printer on and we are still getting the noise so I don't think the print cartridges are related although they are not OEM.  We have replaced the transfer belt, color mis-registration sensor assy, and transfer roller and also replaced the black print cartridge for this issue with no luck.  I have a new set of cartridges coming to me but I still don't think this is the culprit.  Anyone else run across this issue?  It's really strange..

Same engine as the CM2320 which means it has two motors on the right side and if one of them goes bad it will give the color bars across the paper.  To test just remove the right side cover and swap the motors since they are the same and see if the problem changes.

  • Mini Freezes and Makes Grinding Noises

    Hey All,
This is something that has been a continuous problem with my Mini for the past few months. Whenever I connect it to a computer, it will freeze for about 30 seconds before beggining its update. Whenever I select a song to play, it will freeze for about a minute, make strange grinding and clicking noises before skipping to the next song. There are also constant pauses during playback before it continues normally. I can't skip songs normally either as it freezes again.
This problem seemed to start to occur after I dropped my iPod off my bed (less than 45cm) so I somehow doubt that could've triggered this, but anything is possible, so hey.
I have tried reformatting the Mini, restoring it, updating software etc numerous times to no avail. Is all hope lost, or can it still be fixed?
    Thanks in advance,
    Blake

The sad thing is that all hard drives will eventually fail--it's just a mechanical system that will wear over time and eventually break down. The good news is that they can be replaced--even by you if you are up to it. Or there are many places that will do it for you. A bigger disaster would be logic board failure, which is way more expensive to replace.
You might be interested in http://www.ifixit.com/, which has instructions for replacing the hard drive yourself among other things. It's not trivial to do and it's easy to mess up, but you can learn how your computer is put together and what it might take to learn how to work on it yourself.
In the meantime, a new computer would probably be a good idea. Once you're back in business, you can decide what to do with the iBook. If it's only the hard drive, it may well be worth fixing and upgrading with a bigger hard drive. If you want to do this, you can post back with a new topic and there will be plenty of people to advise you.
    Good luck!

  • Grinding noise when my HP LaserJet Pro 400 color MFP M475 calibrates

When my HP LaserJet Pro 400 color MFP M475 recalibrates, I get a grinding or gear slipping noise.  Any idea how to fix it or what to look for?

Noise issues are difficult to troubleshoot remotely and they could easily misguide even when we are close to the device.
Please do confirm if the noise is a grinding noise or squeky/humming noise.
As you have mentioned that it happens only while calibrating, hence I would suggest you to re-check & validate your toner cartridges.  One of the toner cartrdige may be defective and causing this issue.
If not the toner cartridge then it would be one of the printer hardware component which is in question, hence an HP tech. might need to perform physical inspection of the device and the error condition.

  • So I have a 1.5 year old Macbook Pro (Early 2011) and since last week, it has been making a crackling noise that has escalated to a grinding noise. I went to Genius - they told me my HD was fine, but they could do nothing about the noise. I'm super upset

I have a Macbook Pro that I bought new in August of 2011. It's been wonderful up until now. Last week, I was watching a lot of Netflix for a day, but then it began making a tiny crackling noise when I started my computer. It wasn't really bothersome, but then it's escalated into a grinding noise. A loud grinding noise. I haven't been watching Netflix and barely use any of my applications. My RPMs vary when I'm idle  and can go up to 5000. Sometimes, it falls to as low as 1600.
I went to the Genius Bar today and the technician did two diagnostics to test the HD and the parts as a whole. Everything was fine. I was like, ***. Anyways, I asked if there could be anything done for the fans because I was willing to pay (I'm out of warranty). But he said they couldn't DO ANYTHING. That I would have to deal with the annoying noise. I called up Apple and told them what happened and she said that there was nothing else that could be done.
I am so ****** because I did pay good money for this product and I expect to  have the option to repair, ESPECIALLY since I'm willing to pay for the repair. Can anyone tell me what to do? Did anyone ever have this problem?

I would guess the fan is the cause of the noise. Suggest you take a look at it.

Sounds like the disk in your MBP is accessing data on wake up
If you are still concerned you can take it into the Apple Store where they can hear it to be sure

  • New T500 Grinding Noise from Hard Drive

My brand new T500 Hard Drive makes off and on very faint grinding noise. The grinding happens for 6 times and then goes away for 5-10 seconds and then happens again and so on.
Is this normal or is my new hard drive defective, and should I ask Lenovo for a replacement hard drive?
I ran the lenovo hard drive diagnostic tool and it did not find any issues.

Fortunately Dell has released firmware update DE17 for the following Seagate models that seems to work for my Lenovo:
    ST9120411ASG

  • MacBook Pro w/RD: Strange whining noise!!!

My Mac recently got serviced at an Apple Store - and there seems to be a problem. When I power it on, and while I am using it, there seems to be a strange whining noise coming from the upper-right hand side (when looking down at the keyboard). Near the Power Button! It's been drifting in and out of a local Authorized Repair Place, and the problem still is not evident.
It wasn't occurring before I brought it to the Genius Bar. I don't have a pentalobular screwdriver. They had gone into the machine and reset the EFI password at the Genius Bar. All help appreciated! Thanks!
I have a desperate project that needs to be completed before the 25th. I need this back (my machine) before January 22nd, 2013. Please keep that in mind when suggesting repair options.

Isit just when it starts up ? What about when entering a disc into the drive, do you get a almost crunching sound? If so, most definitely the optical drive. Mine is the same, nothing to worry about.. I haven't had any problems so far, sometimes when burning a disc I get errors, but nothing major.

  • Grinding noise on DVD/CD player on iMac

I just inserted a DVD into my DVD/CD player. It started making a really loud grinding noise. Now the DVD is stuck and the CD/DVD player is not working. I tried doing a force eject of the DVD through Terminal, but the command is not working. Any idea how to fix this?

An external burner will only show up if you insert a CD or DVD - plug in the drive, insert a DVD and see if it shows.
As for "download"- what exactly are you talking about?

  • Grinding Noise and Frozen Macbook

Last night I was awoken out of a sound sleep by a loud grinding noise coming out of my MacBook. This was not a 'hum' or a 'buzz' this was a full nuclear invasion Alert! When I investigated, the Macbook was frozen. The screen was on but the keyboard and mouse were unresponsive. I did a hard reboot (what else was there) and it returned to its happy little self.
I'm worried that this is a failing harddrive. Anyone else have an experience like this? I have an appointment w/ the Genius Bar but I'm not really interested in four hours on the road to get their opinion if they can't do anything until the computer completely dies.
PS. There was NO kernel panic.

A couple of things to try...
    1. Run the Disk Utility directly from the DVD. Verify and repair permissions and then verify the drive. See if you get any errors and report back.
    2. Run the Apple hardware test, also from the DVD.
    3. Reset the PRAM and the SMC. Apple has outlined how to do this on their site.
If none of these things show any errors, that doesn't mean it can't happen again. I'm starting to think these hard drives in the MacBooks are flimsy and bad updates don't help either.

That model has a known fault in that Nvidea sold Apple and other computer manufacturers bad GeForce 8600M GT video chipsets that failed eventually. Apple had a program that repaired this at no cost to the owner but it expired almost two years ago.
If this is what happened to yours, and the symptoms suggest so, the only proper fix is a new logic board and I amd pretty sure Apple no longer has parts. When my Late 2007 MBP (same faulty chipset) failed, Apple told me there were no more parts and they could not even do the fixed-rate "depot repair" on mine even though I was willing to pay the ~US$300 for the repair.
The early 2008 MBP is on the vintage and obsolete list:
Vintage and obsolete products - Apple Support
The fact that yours is shown as "vintage" means Apple will not work on it but an independent service provider MAY be able to get the parts from Apple. However, as so may new logic boards were required to satisfy the repair program, from a practical standpoint boards for these are hard to find.

  • Strange clicking noise

Hello all. I hope someone can help me with this question.
I have a 30g ipod that is less than a year old. I believe I purchased it last October. It has started to make a strange clicking noise when I play music.
I tend to use it alot since I can listen to music at work. I would say that it runs for about 9 hours a day. Most of the time when it is in use, it is hooked up directly to the speakers and the battery charger.
Has anyone else had this happen? Does anyone know what the problem is?
    Thanks for your help.
    Dakota
      Windows XP

    Hi Dakota!
First, have you tried resetting your iPod? To reset an iPod:
First, toggle your iPod's "Hold" switch back and forth a couple of times (leave it on the white side of the switch).
Then, press and hold the Menu and Select (center) buttons together for 5-10 seconds.
You might need to attempts this quite a few times. Also, if you connect your iPod to your computer or another power source while resetting, that can be more effective.
If resetting doesn't help, then I would suggest that you try restoring your iPod in iTunes.
For info on restoring, see this article about it:

  • Grind noise when waking up

My MacBook is about 2 months old and from the very beginning, or very close to it, it has made this weird grinding noise when I open the lid and it wakes up. It sounds as if it were coming from the DVD drive, but the sound happens whether or not there there is a DVD/CD in or not. I'm concerned that there might be something wrong and I'm wondering if anyone else has ever had this problem.
    Thanks.
    -Serena

Nope, thats perfectly normal mine does that too. Its just the DVD/ CD-RW drive waking up as well a bit annoying but again normal.
