Strange HDD size and loud combo-drive

Hi there,
just one question about my new iBook.
I ordered one with 80 GB hard drive and a combo-drive, since I do not need to burn dvds with a laptop.
But finder shows just a capacity of 74 gb. I do know that the hard drive vedors use the decimal system instead of bits, so 80 gb is a bit less. But ought it be about 78 GB?!
Furthermore my combo drive is really loud. Is this a normal behaviour?
Just another issue I faced... I ran the hard drive checking programm (sorry, do not know the correct english name...) It told me there were wrong volume acessrights. I did not change anything, just looked around and surfed with safari, so can there be wrong acess-rights?
I made another volume-acessrights-scan again today, there are still errors. Same with "Check volume", but I read here in the board, thats because I have to run the utility from the tiger-install-disc.
Alex

Welcome, Rumo. You have posted on the G3 iBook board, but we are friendly here, too.
Your stated drive size sounds about right. Remember,
1 gigabyte = 1 073 741 824 bytes so the actual functional capacity is always less than the manufacturer's stated size.
I can't say whether G4 combo drives are loud, but G3 ones are.
Finally, it is normal to find that a lot of permissions need repairing when you run Disk Utility for the first time. And, there are always recurring notices "we are using special permissions." Don't bother with "verify permissions" (access rights) on Disk Utility--head straight for "repair permissions." You are correct in saying that you cannot Repair/Verify your hard drive when you are booted from it.

    Hello (hopefully someone can shed some light on my issue)
    I own as above a MAC PRO (Early 2008) this has a RAID card installed along with two 15k.7 cheetah hdd (320gb) and a spare drive, (which i made a regular drive)
    a while ago i had to replace the RAID card battery, so i did this, over a year later the same thing happened again, but as previous just left it and the system seemed fine for ages, until last night i was working in PHOTOSHOP and everything just froze and the screen kind of appeared GREEN, could not do a single thing. So restarted the mac, this time grey screen for ages and a message appeared, (macs version of blue screen) (see attached).
    I restarted the machine and this time a flashing question mark folder!
    could not do a thing.
    so i found my copy of snow leopard and got the computer to run this and at least launch the DISK UTILITY and (Interestingly in the drop down menu RAID UTILITY was also in the menu) but it did not matter which utility i used the (RAID or DISK) neither could see any of drives, just the dvd drive.
    so looked around on you tube and various forums and discovered if i take out the RAID CARD and re-plug the main lead from the RAID card back in to the LOGIC BOARD I would be reverting the MAC to a normal regular non-RAID computer.
    After performing this HARDWARE task and inserting all three HDD, and running the DISK utility from the drop down menu via the SNOW LEOPARD disc.
    (interestingly since the RAID card had been removed the RAID UTILITY  from the drop down menu no longer appeared). running disk utility I can now only see the regular (spare) hdd and DVD Drive, but the two RAID HDD , again, still do not show up DISK UTILITY?
    O.K. so i could chuck out the RAID card (AND RAID HDD) and just go with a regular set-up, and run a back restore from Time Machine on a NEW hdd purchased.
    but what is wrong with the RAID, is the card at fault or are both HDD used for the RAID knackered? can i perform any tests, to see whats what?
    thanks for your help in advanced.

    hello people, the issue was in fact the GRAPHICS card nothing to do with the HDD or RAID system ( although this did cause issues with the RAID system it basically lost its way) below is my replay to another similar  problem some one else had!
    working in photoshop and then everything stopped working and the lot froze! only option was to force shutdown (via button).
    and try to restart, hoping all was fine, this was not the case :-(
    I had the added issue of the RAID card system, that i have, this was confused to say the lease and would not behave or work, causing the start up to hang.
    so i thought the HDD must be bust and the root cause. ( but soon learnt it was not the cause )
    ...bought a new HDD removed the RAID card and replugged the cable from RAID card into LOGIC board, ( making the computer act like any normal non-RAID system). I managed to install the OSX, using the snow leopard disk way. once the mac was running, i started to notice the screen would flicker and started to see 'artefacts'. so i started to reveal my symptoms to the web and forums and soon discovered that my graphics card could be the issue all along?.
    (nvidia geforce 8800gt 2x dvi).
    I read up on that a fix, could be either A. reply the thermal paste, as the card could be over heating or B. stick the card in the oven trick.
    Tried option A. first and nothing still issues, so last night took the plunge carried out option B. and ta da it worked! i even managed to run
    from my new HDD my lasted install OS X, absolutely fine. I then thought, maybe i could repair my RAID so replugged all the HARDWARD back in and
    carried out a disk repair and disk permissions on drives( took a small amount of time), via the SNOW LEOPARD disc - (Disk utilities) and this worked and now have my system working as it was just over 6 days ago.
    what was the cost to get this?  bought a new hdd so 40.00gbp and thermal paste and cleaner kit ( your still need to do this ) search video card trick on you tube.
    and renew thermal paste, approx 15.00gbp, technically i don't need the new HDD, but it was all part of the trial and error way i went. ( i do have extra storage as a result!)"

    Sounds just like what was happening with my Alum MB. I took it in and they replaced my battery. It seems to be ok now. I don't know what it is, but my battery was fine before 10.5.6 and the same timeframe of the firmware updates when they came out.
    My battery health was jumping around but was fine before all of this happened. Unfortunately at 381 cycles I don't think you have much chance of getting the battery for free. Perhaps you can complain about the battery saying it was fine until 10.5.6 or whatever. Not sure when your computer was made, but perhaps you are eligible for this program: http://www.apple.com/support/macbook_macbookpro/batteryupdate/

  • Maximum hdd size and ram?

    hi, I have the emac from 2002, the "P69" I believe it's also referred to as. It's the one with the 700 MHz processor.
    1) I read that there are two ram slots and the maximum useable ram on the computer is 1GB. So if that's true, please confirm it or let me know if it's not.
    2) So my main question is, what's the biggest HDD I can install in this machine? I know with my Power Mac G4 it had a limitation on what the internal drive could be, so I'd like to know what I'm restricted to.
    3) Are there any other upgrades I should consider?
    Thanks in advance

    I buy all my Mac RAM (we have ~14 Macs in the family including two eMacs) from only two on-line vendors:
    Data Memory Systems
    and
    Other World Computing
    I'm pretty sure OWC ships to Canada. Don't know about DMS. That info should be on their web sites.
    Basically you want Mac PC133 RAM even though the 1Gen eMacs have a 100mHz bus. Those eMacs need low-density RAM--hi-density PC RAM will either show up as half its rated size or as not there. Most computer/electronic superstore employees are so PC-centric that they seem oblivious to this basic but important fact. The online stores know you have a Mac and will get you the right RAM if you use their RAM finders
    Location not withstanding, I tend to steer people with little to modest Mac experience to the first vendor because their web RAM finder is clearer and easier to use. Prices are generally similar between the two but you may find OWC is cheaper on certain part numbers. If shipping time is an issue, OWC gets stuff to Idaho faster
    Many people recommend Crucial but I have found minor glitches in their Mac RAM information that makes me just a little nervous. I think Crucial better serves more experienced Mac users who have other resources for finding the exact RAM specs of their machine.

  • Size and kind of drives for XRAID

    Currently I have a raid with four 400 gig hard drives. I bought my XRAID in the summer of 2005.
    Serial # is QP525002RS4. I want to add more drives and not sure which kind (PATA or SATA) and what the largest hard drives (1TB or 750 GB or 500 GB) are compatible with my XRAID?
    Do I have to go through apple to get them?
    Thanks for any assistance.

    I'd suggest asking Apple more directly.
    Here, I'd assume that (if you want to log a report), then you'll want to upgrade to where that web page says you should be, or you prepare to support your current configuration based on other offical Apple product information. Otherwise, well, run with what works for you.
    Most official product support documents from most any vendor will tend to be subset of what actually works. There might be and variously are configuration cases beyond what's permissible within the documentation that might work. And there can be various reasons for a configuration to be considered non-supported.
    And if you're down-revision, then the available effort can be spent on hardware and firmware and software upgrades to more current configurations.
    But the official arbiters here of what's supported are the folks working at Apple, and I'd expect those folks seldom post corrections and support statements here in the forums, and they may or may not be in a position to read and confirm the contents of a support document that's been reported here.

    Hi,
    You can use any compatible hard drives as you want. I would recommend an ssd instead of a 7200rpm system hard drive. Then a 500GB hdd for data. Go to the HP Software and Drivers website for the laptop and look for a maintenance and service guide in Manuals. There are listed all compatible components including hdd sizes and rpm. You may also see which caddy has to be used (part number) and find it on ebay worldwide..

  • Combo drive and leopard

    Why is it that the combo drive can read the leopard dvd? Leopard is on a dual layer DVD, and the combo drive is definately not a dual layer drive.

    My mac mini will not read the Leopard DVD. Just spits it back out. It is a Combo drive. Isn't supposed to be able to at least read the OS disc?

  • Maximum supported HDD size for HP Elitebook 8440p runing Windows 7 Pro 64 Bit

         Hello, I've just purchased an HP Elitebook 8440p "Off Lease" from Tigerdirect and am looking to upgrade both memory (from 4 GB to 8 GB) and put in the largest allowable HDD I can. Either a 512 GB SSD or a 1TB WD Hybrid WD BLACK2 (1 TB HDD / 120 GB SSD Combo drive in One Package!). I would appreciate knowing the Largest Addressable HDD using Windows 7 Pro 64 Bit OS since I don't seem to able to find that info on the web. HP only offers only a 256 GB SSD in its Specs. but I wasn't sure if that was do to BIOS limitations or availability at time of production, same for HDD at 512 GB.
         Also, I would like to know if the Drive Bay's 9.5mm compliant which it needs to be for the WD drive. Can't find that either and while the new laptop has yet to arrive, not everyone measures precisely the same way as to what will work and what just can't be "cheated".
         Thank you for taking the time to read this and ANY information along these lines would be Greatl Appreciated!

    Hi,
    You can install 1TB HDD or SSD (even more), no problem. Many SDD's now are thinner than standard 9.5mm but they normally come with with plastic or even metal part(s) to raise up to 9.5mm standard. FYI: few days ago, I installed a Crucial 960GB M500 SSD to one of my laptops to test Windows 10, it has a metal frame which allows it to fit nicely on a normal laptop HDD bay,

  • Need info about max HDD size available for Satellite Pro M30-813

    Hello,
    The following question is mainly to be addressed to authorized Toshiba support personnel. What exactly is the limitation of a maximum size of an internal HDD that I could use with my Satellite Pro M30-813?
    Recently, I have bought and installed seagate 160 GB SATA drive, onto which I have successfully installed WXP Pro and have been running it for quite a while with no problems. Recently, I have been copying large amount of data from an external hard drive to my new internal disk, and as the files were being copied as I noticed having about 50 GB free space left, I had experienced windows "delayed write failed" and a massive partition failure with no possibility to recover data. The system would no longer boot and the whole MBR was damaged. As the result, I have lost all data on my new disk.
    Although, I realize that Toshiba is not responsible for additional hardware that I use with my laptop and that is not officially supported by Toshiba, I am certain that as an end user of a Toshiba product I have the right to know about a max HDD size limitation information for my notebook model. Therefore, I request Toshiba technical support representative to give me a straight official answer to my question.
    Thank you in advance,
    Andrejs

    Hi Andrew
    > The following question is mainly to be addressed to authorized Toshiba support personnel
    I think you are in the wrong area if you are looking for an answer from an authorized Toshiba support.
    This is a Toshiba user-to-user forum! You will meet here Toshiba notebook owner and enthusiasts who share knowledge and tries solve problems but nobody from Tosh :(
    I could provide my experience with the M30 Satellite and the HDD upgrade possibilities.
    In my knowledge the Sat M30 supports a 40GB, 60GB and 80GB HDD for sure.
    In my opinion you could use the 100GB HDD but bigger HDDs will not run and functions correctly.
    So switch to a lower HDD size and enjoy the notebook!
    Ive goggled a little bit and found compatible HDD and the part numbers
    HITACHI GBC000Z810 -> 80GB
    HITACHI GBC00014810 -> 80GB
    TOSHIBA HDD2188B -> 80GB
    HITACHI G8C0000Z610 -> 60GB
    HITACHI G8BC00013610 -> 60GB
    TOSHIBA HDD2183 -> 60GB
    TOSHIBA HDD2184 -> 60GB
    I hope this could help you a little bit!

  • Will the MSI Combo drive work w/ non-Intel boards someday?

    I found out, after I'd gotten an MSI SATA combo drive for my MSI nVidia chipset motherboard and been using it for a few weeks, that the MSI drive is not supposed to be used with my board.  This would explain the stalling errors I'm getting while trying to burn CD's.  I've got the latest firmware on the CD-ROM, by the way - version 1.20.  The MSI Live Update software only knows about version 1.10.
    The product page says it's only supposed to be used with boards that have certain Intel chipsets.  Is this a firmware limitation - in other words, will there be a software fix for this problem someday?  Or should I just get rid of the drive now?

    But that just doesn't make sense.  I have a motherboard that is advertised as having "SATA" connectors and a Combo drive that is advertised as being "SATA", and they are made by the same manufacturer, yet they don't work with each other.  Where is the defect?  Is it in the motherboard or is it in the drive?  Surely it is not the SATA spec itself, otherwise the SATA spec is meaningless.
    Going by MSI's page for the Combo drive, I would assume the problem is in the drive because they say "only works with Intel xxx, yyy, zzz chipset motherboards".
    I just want to know if one or the other will be fixed (in software) someday so that I can use this Combo drive's burning capabilities.  That's all.

    Hi, Zach. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    You have found the G3 Dual USB iBook Forum, but I can help you out a bit. The warranty on the iBook gives you free phone support for any and all issues for 90 days. Use it. For full information on the warranty in plain language, check out Rachel's helpful FAQ Is phone support and warranty service free?
    I recommend that your fiancée buy AppleCare. If you have any problems whatsoever with a new iBook within the first year of its eligibility, it is foolhardy to not purchase AppleCare if it is available where you live.

  • Disappearing combo drive on 2007 mac mini in lion

    I am having trouble with a disappearing DVD/cd-rw on a 2007 mac mini.  I purchased a used mini of ebay and upgraded to a SATA III SSD and 2 gigs of ram.  For the most part the system functions great.  However, the disc drive is not always recognized by the computer.  When its not recognized, i seem to get a kernel panic when i try to shut it down.
    could this be a problem with the OS?  could one of the cables be loose?  I followed the iFixit guide for upgrading the ram and replacing the hard drive and had no problem.
    I am also using an old Newer Technologies MiniStack with an external drive.  I did not power the drive on this morning and the combo drive was back and iTunes ripped a CD without issue.
    Before i try another clean install, i would appreciate any insight you could share.

    Could be a lose connection. I would try reseating the connectors

  • T60 HDD res. partition, USB ports and DVD-RAM drive no longer recognizing data/media!

    I have a base installation of the IBM T60.. I made no modifications to the setup or configuration of how the HDD is structured nor have I downloaded and installed any strange drivers... only automatically downloaded drivers from Microsoft update and manually downloaded driver updates from the Lenovo website.
    One day everything was working fine.  Next day, my USB devices, reserved partition (can't remember what this is called) and the DVD-RAM drive stopped working but power was still getting to these devices.
    My DVD-RAM drive is seen as a DVD-RAM on first bootup.  When I insert a CD or DVD media in the drive, the Explorer tree changes DVD-RAM to CD-ROM in the Explorer (really strange).  It behaves like there is no media in the drive.  Cannot boot with that drive either.
    In addition, I have external USB HDD and Flash drives as well.  None of them work on this T60 anymore.
    When I plug in an external USB HDD or Flash drive, I get "not formatted" error message and a prompt to format my drives?!
     I tested these USB external drives on a desktop machine and verified that they are working 100% fine.  So the problem has something to do with my IBM/Lenovo T60.
    It almost seems like something broke on the motherboard perhaps?  I downloaded and installed the latest BIOS updates as well to no avail.  Please help.  Thanks in advance for your time and consideration of this issue.
