Strange icon during shutdown...

Does anyone else have a strange icon flash on the display for a fraction of a second during shutdown? I running 10.5.1 on my 15" MBP 2.16 Core Duo and have noticed a real weird icon that only shows up occasionally during shutdown. It usually blinks on and off too fast to really see what it is, but I think it is sort of like the symbol on the command key and has a red X across it. I don't have any issues with the MBP with the exception of some files that Disk Utility is having trouble with when I repair permissions which seems to take a long time. It gets to a point where it says time remaining is less than a minute, but keeps going and going for another 3-5 minutes after displaying this:
Repairing permissions for “Macintosh HD”
Warning: SUID file "usr/libexec/load_hdi" has been modified and will not be repaired.

Anyone seen this before or have any thoughts?

Thanks for the tip.
I did as you suggested and the permissions issue is fully resolved. Never had an issue using the Software Update pane, but I'll file the in my overloaded brain for another time.
I haven't seen the strange icon during shutdown again, but I did identify it as the icon for a piece of software called KeyCue. It shows keyboard shortcuts for the active application by holding down the Command key for about 2 seconds.
Thanks again!

  • MacBook pro Extremely long booting time After 10.10.1 + strange icons when booting

    Hi all,
since the Yosemite update and the sequential patch, I've been experiencing lots and lots of issues with this releade
    I posses a
    MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012)
    2,5 GHz Intel Core i5
After a week after the Yosemite update my Mac just froze, and for a couple of days I was unable to access it. after 4 attempts of Clean install i was finally able to restore it. but the issue with long booting time and free after sleep/wake action are the same .
I'm experiencing strange icons during boot as follows:
Only after a second reboot and clearing ram with Cmd+Alt+P+R i'm able to get rid of this , and the reboot shows this
That after 5 mins changes into this
This routine keeps happening, every single time i have to restart my mac.
    Any suggestions?
    tnks

Well , i guess i a HDD issue, when i was experiencing the initial issues with yosemite , I've installed the system an external Hdd and everything was working fine.
So i guess my suspicions were correct. I have to change my hdd.

  • IMac hangs up during shutdown

My iMacs (2006 + late 2007) occasionally lockup during shutdown. After the desktop icons are gone but the desktop photo remains with the spinning pinwheel. Eventually I force a shutdown by holding down the power button. On restart, everything is back to normal. Sometimes I have waited for 2 hours and the machine has not shut down - only gone to sleep.

Same problem here, but it hangs all the time, not only 10-20% of the shutdown. I let it there for about 2 hours, nothing changed.
I have no idea if this is time machine related, but if it is, it's a bug. Apple can't wan't me to check the sys prefs every time i shut down my iMac...
By the way it's a two week old iMac which replaced my older one. I moved all the data by reinstalling leopard on the new iMac and telling the installer to rebuilt the system from the time machine data of my old iMac... Maybe something went wrong there.

  • Suggestion: how to unfreeze during shutdown/logout

    Hi all,
From time to time, my iMac freezes during shutdown/logout. I cant really find out the actual cause. May be it was due to the .Mac mirroring, or some external USB devices fail to shutdown properly, whatever the reason is. My question is other than pressing the magic button to shut down, what else can I do to unfreeze it? Please suggest.
    Thanks in advance,
    Derek.

I also experience hangups during shutdown. Very often I might add, and this is really annoying. I've reinstalled my Mac Pro from scratch twice in the last month, thinking it was an error on my part. Last night, as I shut down (using CTRL-Option-Command-Eject), this is the log I got (I have no halt line, which is strange):

I understand why you can't recover from a hangup when the shutdown process started, as services started to close, but there must be a way to "jolt" the system to force quit hanged or rogue/zombie processes in order to properly shutdown the system. Each time I push the power button to close down the computer, I fear I may corrupt something in the OS or the system disk.
    Any thoughts?

  • Strange icon behavior

Since purchasing an iMac with Snow Leopard pre-installed, I've experienced a series of strange ‘icon bugs’, and the problem has persisted through to the latest 10.6.4 update.
Bug #1: Occasionally icons on the desktop will become pixelated and blocky, resembling MacOS 9 sized icons that have been over-magnified. If I restart the Mac or log out and back in again the problem will go away, at least until the next random occurrence. The problem seems to particularly affect icons for inserted CDs and DVDs, but I’ve also seen it occur with application and file icons.
Bug #2: Sometimes icons will disappear completely by becoming transparent. This has affected all kinds of file types, but particularly files that have been freshly downloaded to the desktop from Safari. I can resolve the problem by dragging the affected file into a freshly created folder and then back onto the desktop, at which point the icon reappears.
Bug #3: About 50% of the time I insert a USB thumb drive or mount a DMG disk image, the icon displayed on the desktop will be for a hard drive (i.e. the one used for the internal hard drive) and not the white icon normally used for mounted images.
These bugs only occur on the desktop. They never occur in other folders or in list view. I cannot isolate the cause to any particular task or process. Sometimes they happen immediately after a re-boot.

Create a new User go to System Preferences > Accounts > "+" (make it an admin acct) and test the apps in this new account, if they work the problem is isolated to your User and not systemwide.
If the issue is limited to your user account try going to Users/yourname/Library/Preferences and move com.apple.desktop.plist and com.apple.desktopservices.plist to the trash. Restart and test. You may have to reset some Desktop settings.
If that didn't work, start up in Safe Mode (It will take more time to startup in Safe Mode because it runs a directory check.)
If your Desktop icons function correctly that way, go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items, and remove them. Boot normally and test. If not go to/Users/yourname/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items. Lastly, try moving/Users/yourname/Library/Fonts to your desktop and restarting.
Log out/in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.
If the issue is systemwide then, you may be able to repair this with the The 10.6.4 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.

  • System freeze during shutdown

I have noticed a couple of times that during shutdown immediately when plymouth kicks in the system just freezes. It is not leaving behind any logs. And it does not occur often. I use kde 4.4 rc2 from kde-mod. But this occurs after kdm quits and plymouth kicks in.
Anyone else facing the same issue? Any ideal how I can debug this?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
To follow on from the advice re ensuring the driver is the latest version before attempting any other fix, if the problem continues, it is by far better to have the system shutdown gracefully by pulling the USB connection than to shutdown by removing power! At worst, disconnecting the USB cable would do no more than cause problems to the system's printer setup files or print queues, but disconnecting the power COULD cause significant damage to directory and file structure on the hard drive, and actually result in the system being unable to boot.

  • What happen during shutdown oracle database

    Dear All,
i have a questions and i enclosed some suggestions for the answer because I'm confused about the answers :
What happens during shutdown oracle database :
    and the suggested answer :
1- When shutdown the database with NORMAL or IMMEDIATE option : the database system writes check point before shutting down the database .
2- when you shutdown the database with the IMMEDIATE , option , open transaction are rolled back before the database is shutdown .
3- shutting down the database with abort always requires an instance recovery at the next startup .
please suggest the right answer .
    Regards

    Hi Anwar,
When you close a database, Oracle writes all database data and recovery data in the SGA to the datafiles and redo log files, respectively. Next, Oracle closes all online datafiles and redo log files.
When you terminate the instance of an open database/use abort command to close and completely shut down the database the writing of all data in the buffers of the SGA to the datafiles and redo log files is skipped. The subsequent reopening of the database requires recovery, which Oracle performs automatically.
I hope this will help you out to understand the process.

First of all shutdown has 4 options
    1.Normal
    2.Immediate
    3.Transactional
    4.Abort
    Default is normal
Normal: No new connections are allowed. Database and redo buffers are written into disk.Database is closed.
Backgroud process are terminated.SGA is deallocated. Until and unless all users disconnect, database wont be closed.
Transactional: No client can start a new transaction. Clients get disconnected once their transactions are completed.
Database and redo buffers are written into disk.Database is closed.Backgroud process are terminated.SGA is deallocated.
Immediate: Current running SQL are not completed. Oracle does not wait for users to disconnect.
All active transactions are rolled back.Database and redo buffers are written into disk.
Database is closed.Backgroud process are terminated.SGA is deallocated.
Abort: All users are disconnected.Database and redo buffers are NOT written into disk.
All background processes are killed instantly and instance is abruptly terminated.

  • Black frame around image icon during Web Start start up

    Hi,
Sometimes I can see black frame (16 pixels) around my own icon during resource files downloading. My icon resolution is 32*32 pixels.
It appears like Web Start assignes size of the icon to 64*64 pixels and all space around my 32*32 icon is filled by black colour.
Playing with the width and height parameters. As a result it did not help.

It's weird, but within system preferences, i have a strange icon which seems to be corrupt. the icon is the startup disc icon. it seems to have enlarged and the words "start up disc" have disappeared, because the icon has enlarged. I wondered if there is a way to reinstall the system prefs application or if there is a folder where i can replace the icon. I wanted to attach a pic to this topic but can't. but if anyone wants to help i can email the pic which a have screen captured.
Please help. It doesn't seem to effect my OS but it is a glitch and would love to sort it.

    Hi Leigh!
    Get Pacifist...
    http://www.charlessoft.com/
then extract what you need from your Install Disk.
    But 1st do these...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, *you must select your language first.)*
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then boot from the HD, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot.

  • Strange icon in Hierarchy palette

    Hi all
I got a form to make some changes in and I came across that strange icon (image atteched) I wondered what it means.
It's the form named 'matirial_data' - looks like a regular form with lines in it.
It doesn't seem to behave differently so it doesn't realy bother me, I'm just curious,
    Thanks
    shai.

    found the answer:
This icon shows that the form's content is flowed and it shows the flow direction (western text/top to bottom).
    In example:
the form 'Signature' content is 'positione',
the form 'commentsForm' is 'flowed' - 'western text'
the form 'dataform is 'flowed' - 'top to bottom'
    Thanks to all

  • Strange icon appears in the menu bar randomly

I'm using a late '13 macbook pro retina and recently I've noticed that a strange icon will popup in the menu bar somewhat randomly, though it seems to appear most when I access certain websites (ebay is the one I've noticed it happen the most).
The icon is between the power level and the date and time and appears in the spot where the keyboard language icon usually is. When I try to click the icon nothing happens and it just opens the language drop down menu. It disapears after a few seconds but when it appears a strange black flicker will appear at the top of my screen just below the menu bar.
