Strange IDE/SATA Driver prob in Win XP w/K8N Neo Plat (skt 754)

This is my first attempt at building on the Socket 754 A64 platform.
Previously I've built systems based on Intel and AMD solutions, and encountered different boards with mixed SATA/IDE and RAID options.
My installed drives include
SATA1 primary master
1. WD 160 8mb cache 7200RPM SATA drive
IDE1 primary master
1. Memorex 8x/4x/8x/4x/16x DVD+-RW 48x/32x/48x CDRW
Upon installing WinXP with the MSI provided RAID and NVIDIA SATA drivers to a single WD 160GB SATA drive with the RAID options in bios disabled, I get a successful install.  However, listed under System -> Device Manager -> IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers are 4 different components.
1. Nvidia CK8S Serial ATA Controller (v2.5)
2. Nvidia CK8S Serial ATA Controller (v2.5)
3. Nvidia Nforce3 250 Parallel ATA Controller (v2.6)
4. Standard IDE/ESDI Hard Disk Controller
Hardware translation:
1. Device type: IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
    Manufacturer: NVIDIA Corporation
Location:        PCI bus 0, device 10, function 0
2. Device type: IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
    Manufacturer: NVIDIA Corporation
Location:        PCI bus 0, device 9, function 0
3. Device type: IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
    Manufacturer: NVIDIA Corporation
Location:        PCI bus 0, device 8, function 0
4. Device type: IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
    Manufacturer: NVIDIA Corporation
    Location:        Unknown
The 3rd device I listed above is not functioning correctly according to Win XP.  However if I disable it, then the whole OS will crash, so it must be functioning somehow to some extent.  Win XP says,
"This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)
If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system."
Originally this device was the same version as the other two, and when I tried upgrading all three to version 2.6, I recieved an error trying to upgrade with the first 2 devices and the 3rd upgraded but still shows that it is not working properly according to windows.  Also looking at the drivers that they are all using,
Devices 1-3 all use nvatabus.sys and idecoi.dll  ver: 5.10.2600.0446  .  Its actually interesting that they all 3 are using the same drivers and one is reporting to be a different version.
Anyway, my question is has anyone else encountered this strange problem, and is there a fix to make windows happy and the computer perform as it should?
Thanks.

I don't know what has happened .
But you should right click the "4. Standard IDE/ESDI Hard Disk Controller" and uninstall it .
Then update drivers on the PATA controller 3. Nvidia Nforce3 250 Parallel ATA Controller (v2.6) (right click/driver/update)
And update the drivers to  "Nvidia CK8S Parallell ATA Controller (v2.5)"
Use the supplied driver disk .
I guess you have anwered yes to install nvidia sw driver from the
nforce3 chipset bundle .And thats the reason for the NF3 v2.6 version .
I have v2.5 CK8S on both ATA and SATA controller (one of each)
Xp was installed with F6 and driver disk .

Good luck and you are welcome.
Like I said, I bought one of their inexpensive enclosures and now can use the hard drive just as a source for the files that are on it...my external drives are much larger and faster so I just plug that drive in when I need something from it.

  • Advice - K8N Neo Plat users with *NEW* (NCQ) SATA Drives!

Hi, you can see my specs in my signature, but basically the Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 SATA drive is playing up after a year of perfect use.
An obvious replacement is the DiamondMax Plus 10... but...
I know the nForce3 motherboard does NOT support native command queuing (NCQ)... but do I *STILL* need to install the nVidia SATA (IDE) drivers?? Currently I am using only windows IDE drivers (I uncheck the IDE drivers when installing nvidia system drivers).
Also, are people still having problems running these hard drives on their motherboards?? (K8N Neo & Neo2) - or do all new "DiamondMax Plus 10" hard drives come with the updated BIOS?? (My motherboard BIOS is 1.4 - It is very very stable so I do not want to upgrade this).
Basically - is there a better hard disk to go for with the K8N Neo Platinum? I want a fast, quiet SATA drive, around 160GB.
    thanks for your help

Is there a firmware (bios) update available on the DM10 drives? what version is it? where do i get it?
(I got one of the first DM10's and can only run the drive on sata4 on my k8n neo2 plat)

  • MSI K8N Neo Plat edit. and IDE

Can anybody tell me how many IDE units you can run on this motherboard? I do not want to use raid 0 or 1.  I have a KT3 ultra - aru at them moment with 6 single IDE units, but now I need to upgrade.
    Thanks for any help.

    Hi,
you can connect 4 IDE devices and 4 four sata devices on MSI K8N Neo Plat editition.
If it's not enought you can plug an IDE PCI card....

  • MSI K8N NEO PLAT + CD / DVD-RW Drives

Hi, i have the msi k8n neo plat. I recently had to replace my old mobo due to the old power supply blowing or something. So i got me a 480watt enermax coolergiant psu. Replaced the mobo for a new msi k8n neo plat. Put the mobo in and psu. Working fine and dandy. Now i installed 64bit xp to primary, and ive had it running for for about 2 weeks. Went to install linux to the second hard drive, so i changed the boot order, saved settings and went to load disc...however now my cd and dvd drives dont work, and they dont work in windows either.

Can anybody tell me what i should set the cpu fsb frequency to in the bios.
I just read this in the faq
What is the fsb speed of this cpu?
Depending on which FSB you are asking about: The Athlon 64's have the memory controller built in (which was previously part of the Northbridge on the motherboard) which uses up to 200MHz DDR Memory (400MHz FSB) The HyperTransport link from the CPU to the rest of the motherboard runs up to 800MHz. Just to expand on my answer... The HT link is 800MHz, but it's 16 bit in size (2 bytes worth of data per clock) the total bandwidth of the HyperTransport link is 3.2GB in total - 1.6GB sending data to CPU and 1.6GB receiving data from CPU.

  • Poor SATA Performance out of K8n Neo Plat and Raptor drive

I have a k8N Neo platinum with a new Raptor drive. Is there any reason why, when I set the command queueing option for the drive, my speed test under the device manager for that channel says I am getting a normal speed of 5 and a burst of 5.5? I should be getting 50+ with this drive.
Any thoughts? I have all the latest drivers.

kweckstrom - the reason is this:
There is currently no hardware support for NCQ on Nforce 3 boards - NVidia have only just managed to add it for the NForce4 boards as you know which aint available as yet.
NCQ is running in software mode - hence the reduction of performance - I have the same problem - its a case of deciding if you really need it or not - if you do allot of multi-tasking then its worthwhile otherwise if like me you just game - then its not required.

  • K8N Neo plat CnQ prob.

I’ve got a couple of problems with this board that I need help with. (one per post)
    2.    coon’n’quiet (v1.6.6.0) reports wrong values. My cpu is either at –123 C or +152C or any value in-between. Also, if I do a reboot from the start menu, then sometimes the fan stops when the screen goes blank, and doesn’t start again until I get the starting windows message, the cpu is really cooking by then.
currently the NB fan is at 4800rpm and the cpu fan is a 0. i dont have a NB fan!
and the cpu is a 3c, oh its upto 71c, my mistake its really -123c. time to put my coat on
    Fixed it. :hypecrite:
It appears that the bios was only partly cleared when I shorted out the battery pins following a bad test. Everything looked ok, and that’s what though me for almost a day of reinstalling drivers.
Finally shorted out the battery and had another coffee, came back and all was fine!!!

What forceware driver are you using? Have you tried others. There was at least one of the drivers that had issues with vid playback but I think the latest 77.77 is fine.

Does the same hold true with Windows 2000?  No need to F6 and add drivers for a single SATA (WD Raptor 36GB) drive?
I am having a devil of a time getting my K8N Neo Plat seeing this single drive, and shall try the tricks in the FAQ thread: Single SATA or Multiple Drive Array Setup FAQ
I cannot even format the SATA drive in the MSI - the system locks up, aborts, or I see ASCII characters in the screen after "format terminated" messages.  Drive formats fine in my Asus P4P800-E Deluxe.

  • Does XA52P Sata drive work with Nforce3 250 boards??

i have Msi's K8N Neo Platinum Nforce3 250gb board.  It has a native Sata controller on the chipset.  Does anybody know if Msi's new Sata drive will work on this baby??

I just bought the XA52P and it works fine with my K8N Neo Plat.
Here's another review of it, just incase anyone is interested.
    http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles/view.php?cid=29&id=1207
Just sharing some info... the XA52P doesn't read CDs at full speed unless you hold down the power button for 5 seconds and the LED stays on.
The active panels are pretty thick and looks kinda out of place next to normal optical drives.

  • K8N Neo DVD drive issues

I am having problems getting my liteon 811s dvd drive to work on my MSI K8N neo. Im pretty sure the problem is the motherboard. I did have the drive working for a while but one day it stopped working. It will show a cd and you can get into the folders, but when it tried to copy data the program that is trying to acess the cd just freezes. Another weird thing is that i can burn dvds ok. I have tried installing windows (in dos) on to a dinfrent hard drive and the installation just froze. I poped the drive into my older computer and it worked with no probelms. Another thing i tried was clearing the CMOS. That improved things temporarly, it would copy a dvd and after 40% it would crap out. After a restart it would not work like normal. I have also tried switching IDE cables.

Just to finish what I posted above:
With BIOS "Standard CMOS Features" for the Secondary Slave switched from "Auto" to "Manual", I can select the DMA Mode using Windows' Device Manager, it stays where I put it, and allows full function of the DVD/CD Rom drive. With BIOS set to "Auto", it wants to select Ultra DMA 5, which the drive is said to support, but this causes problems reading CDs.  I can change the DMA Mode in Device Manager, but it finds its way back to Ultra DMA 5 after a reboot/use or two.
It may very well be that this could be fixed by getting the two DVD/CD drives off the same Channel -- when I feel like rearranging everything in my box to do this, I'll try it.
The funny thing is that with this virgin system, everything ran fine for a while.  There may be incompatible software involved  -- incompatible with either the drive or combination of drives, the mobo chipset, or the BIOS.  I probably can't blame the nvidia IDE drivers, since I get the CD-reading problem even with Windows IDE drivers.  I'm tempted to reformat the drive and start over, paying closer attention to this as I install software.
I first noticed the CD-reading when I updated the firmware on the drive -- I can't blame it on that since I reflashed it to original, and the drive works fine with either firmware version when connected to another machine.
My specific problem was that the drive refused to read any type of CD -- DVDs were OK.  Windows could identify the files on a disk, but could not read them.  (Changing DMA Mode fixes this, but getting the DMA Mode change to stick requires the BIOS change described above.)
Anyway, to 6th Extinction: I realize this thread has wandered away from your specific problem -- hope you get it solved -- maybe some of what's been posted here, and elsewhere, will help.

  • Pen drive as A: - K8N Neo Platinum?

Is it possible to make a pen drive appear as A: on the K8N Neo Platinum?

  • How many IDE drives & CDrom can be installed with SATA drives??

How many IDE drives & CDrom can be installed with SATA drives??
i have 2 IDE hard disks & 2 CDROM drives: can install SATA hard disk added to these drives or do i have to remove some???
& if it can be added, can i install 2 SATA drives???
    THX in advance

The 3 versions of this board that are available are:
    875P Neo-FISR (PCB 2.0)
    875P Neo-LSR (PCB 1.0)
    875P Neo-FIS2R (PCB 1.0)
All of these boards will have the following ports provider by the chipsets ICH5R south bridge.
2 x SATA (Supporting 2 SATA HDD drives)
    2 x PATA (Supporting 4 IDE devices)
All 6 of these can be used at the same time (provided you are using win XP or 2K) you just need to make sure yor BIOS is set right.
    ->INTEGRATED PERIPHERALS
    ->ON-CHIP IDE CONFIG
ATA CONFIG: S-ATA ONLY or P-ATA ONLY
    S-ATA/P-ATA KEEP ENABLED: YES
    OPERATE MODE:
If you set to "legacy mode" S-ATA are set to channel 1 and 2 and P-ATA to channel 3 and 4. If you set to "native mode" P-ATA are channel 1 and 2 and S-ATA 3 and 4. You can only use the raid functionfon SATA in native mode.
If you have the 875P Neo-FIS2R (PCB 1.0) you will also have the following ports provided by the Promise PDC20378 PCI controller:
2 x SATA (Supporting 2 SATA HDD drives)
1 x PATA (Supporting 1 Master IDE HDD drive)
The PATA port is limited to 1 Master HDD by the lite BIOS. This can in theory be upgraded to the full BIOS supporting a master and a slave, but this may obviously void your warranty.
So the answer to your origional question is:
    2 x SATA HDDs and 4 x IDE HDD/CDROM if you have 875P Neo-FISR (PCB 2.0) or 875P Neo-LSR (PCB 1.0)
    or
    4 x SATA HDDs, 1 x IDE HDD (2 if you modify the BIOS) and 4 x IDE HDD/CDROM if you have 875P Neo-FIS2R (PCB 1.0)

  • [SOLVED] Very strange P43 Neo-F + sata drive problem in vista...

Well I'd been running Windows 7 flawlessly apart from a few non-related motherboard problems, so I decided to install Vista.
Basically my main OS drive (sata) is always detected, but then occasionally (more often than not) my secondary sata drives will simply not be listed in device manager once the system is booted up. Now, I've seen this problem before, and it was sorted by right clicking 'my computer' going to 'manage' and setting the drives up to be detected. But this simply isn't the case here. They don't appear anywhere!
It sometimes sorts itself out once I click 'Scan for hardware changes' in device manager and they magically appear as if ive just plugged in a USB device, which is fine I guess...but each time it swaps the damn drive letters around! So having media library's in Winamp, etc or putting a shortcut toolbar to my music on the taskbar is all but pointless!
All of my hardware apart from Bluetooth has drivers installed for it, and nothing seems to be conflicting at all. Does anyone have any idea why this is
happening? because in all my years of computing I've never seen something as strange as this...
As far as I  know I have the latest Intel INF drivers installed (9.0.0.1011)
    This is the board: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/148024

I can't see how it'd be PSU because Win7 was just fine...but here it is...
    PSU: OCZ XStream 600W PSU
    100~240Vac 10-5A 50/60Hz
    +3.3V(36A), +5V(30A), +12V1(18A), +12V2(18A), +12V3(18A), +12V4(18A)
    Specs:
    Dual Core E5200 2.5GHz
    4GB Corsair RAM + 2GB OCZ RAM
    nVidia GeForce 9600 GT
    MSI P43 Neo-F
Not detected (at Vista startup) drives:
    Hitachi HDP725050GLA360
    ST3320620AS
(they show up perfectly fine in DOS, but I remember only the drive below appeared during Vista setup drive options...)
    Detected Primary OS drive:
    WDC WD800JD-00LUA0
My drives in BIOS are set to IDE mode (which has always been fine for me in the past). I set it to AHCI Mode to check if it boots but it just sticks on the same screen (flashing underscore). I'm sure it's driver related but I'm totally out of options now...you'd think installing the ones provided on the MSI site would get it working... :/
Another thing is under 'Storage Controllers' in device manager, there is only an IDE Controller. I'm sure there should be a SATA one there, too?
