Strange Imac USB issue you won't believe

Hi,
Hope someone can help me, this is nuts.
I have Intel based Imac running 10.4.11. I have had it for 5 years with no issues until a month ago.
Long story but lots of troubleshooting and attempted to install new hardware, printer, external Hard drive etc.
Bottom line.
The USB ports on the monitor will only run my Keyboard and the mouse. Nothing else. Shocker is that anything I plug into the keyboard works but if I plug them into the USB port directly, nothing works. How can that be? Same port on the computer but I have to go through the keyboard.
I now have a Powered 7 port usb Hub hooked up to the keyboard and all is good.
Any ideas on how this can be happening and what are the long term risks. Is my computer going to die anytime soon. Stressing the port on the keyboard, etc.
Oh and one more weird thing that just started happening. The monitor will occasionally go from screen saver to back on rather than to sleep...... and one in 5 times I shut it down it hangs up. I need to unplug it and all is fine for a few shutdowns then it happens again.
Thanks for any help.
Beat Regards,
Wally

Sorry that the SMC reset didn't get the ports working correctly.
Also have a look at > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1317
and from that article try:
+1. Shut down the computer.+
+2. Disconnect all devices and all other cables, except the keyboard and mouse cable(s).+
+3. Disconnect the computer from the power outlet and wait for 3 to 5 minutes.+
+4. Plug the computer back in and turn it on.+
+5. Reconnect the device(s) (one at a time if there is more than one) and test. Test with each port if you have more than one.+
In step 3 wait at least minutes 5 or longer.
Does the keyboard work in another port? If so, move the keyboard to another port and try the hub or other device in that port?

  • 24" iMac USB issue

Recently my 4-yr-old 24" iMac has been having USB issues. The only peripherals it will see are the mouse and keyboard (and a printer if it is plugged into the keyboard). Nothing else plugged into the USB ports is recognized - no iPhone, no printer, no hub, nothing. The built-in iSight camera and Bluetooth have also disappeared, and I know they are USB related as well. Genius bar says $450 for new logicboard. I can't find my AHT disk
The USB ports all seem to work with the mouse and keyboard. Any other suggestions? (I have reset PMU.)

Try resetting the SMC, if it doesn't work the first time do it 2-3x. Also try doing a PRAM reset.

  • IMac display issues: black icons and folders, doubled up files in finder windows, programs won't update

    HELP!
I'm hoping someone can help with my iMac 27" purchased in 2010.  From a previous discussion I started a year ago, I have had virtually nothing but trouble with it.  After the internal hard drive crashing, I was able to install OS X on an external drive and used it for a good 8 months to drive my iMac and I took it to an expert who has replaced it with a 3tb HDD, but at some point the display has gone crazy.  I am not certain if it is hardware, i.e. graphics card or video but I'll describe the symptoms and add some pics to see if anyone has seen this before and knows what the problem may be.
    1.     90% of the screen was covered with white with just a portion of the desktop showing through.
(This happened when I tried to reinstall OS X on the old HDD and the new one, but didn't happen when using OS X install disc)
    2.     Files, folders, photos and some icons on the dock go black
    3.     Files and photos double up when in Finder.  When I'm viewing photos, it shows them but all the previous panes and the photos are jumbled behind the
            photos.
    4.     Anything I open in Preview is completely black, but ColourSync Utility opens everything fine.
    5.     Programs won't update.  They will download onto my iMac but won't update.  Some say, because I don't have OS X 10.6.8 others just won't open.
Including Google Chrome, opens with two tabs open but when I open a third tab the rainbow wheel just turns.  Skype won't open just gives a failure
            report.
    6.     10.6.8 Update Combo downloads but when I restart the screen is covered in white - as in 1. and I have to reinstall OS X 10.6.2 to get the screen to               clear but then all the above problems continue.
    7.     Sometimes videos don't display in Youtube, or the entire page other than the video player is covered in rainbow lines.
    8.     Some buttons are blacked out on selection pages, i.e. system preferences, or saving screens
    9.     Photos opened in FB go upside down and flicker all over the page as my mouse runs over them.
    10.   Photos won't upload into internet editing programs.
I can't find anyone who has had the same issue in all of the discussions I've looked at, but it sounds like I have a video problem, but I wondered if it might be a software problem with flash or something.  Or I have something malicious on my computer.
I also have an iphone 5 that faulted with the iTunes and USB icons and won't fix after trying one of those R-Sims, and I wondered if somewhere along the line it may have even had a virus/trojan/malware that has infected my external drive and then my internal drive.  A reason I have thought that is because I have used my daughter's MacPro laptop and plugged in my external drive and I noticed the windows in hers were starting to do the same thing.
And on top of all that, my fans didn't work for over a year and I had to place an external fan at the back of the computer or it would overheat and shut down, but after resetting the SMU it started working again, but it is very noisy. I have tried to download SMC Fan Control and although it downloads to the HDD, it won't open.
Sorry its such a long post, I do hope with all of this information someone can help me.
    Thanks so much.

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
*Soon after, I installed Quake Wars, L4D 1, 2, Mass Effect 2, Need For Speed: Undercover, Mozilla Firefox and *Sophos Enterprise AV*. Approximately a week after installation, I began to experience malfunctions varying greatly*
Macs get grumpy when running anti virus software. Disable or completely uninstall Sophos A/V and see if that makes a difference. A/V software on a Mac will slow the drive down more and more as time goes on.
Also, check the vendor sites for each 3rd party software you installed to make sure they are compatible with 10.6.x
The "hard reboots" are a result of the system freezing due to incompatible or outdated software.

  • 27" iMac stability issues, also stuck on 10.6.3, won't upgrade to 10.6.4

Hi, we have a 27" iMac that is running 10.6.3 and is having stability issues. It's the Core i7 model, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD - real nice machine. It was purchased this summer - but it's *not the absolute latest* model.
The issues revolve mostly around iPhoto '11 giving the spinning wait circle when trying to perform random operations including photo import, merging Events...simple things like that. It causes iPhoto to freeze and then Finder freezes, and so on. Have to turn the machine off with the power button. Yes, we ran Software Update and the latest iPhoto '11 update is installed.
In addition, I also tried to install the FaceTime Beta and it won't let me because it said it doesn't have Security Update 2010-005 installed. Downloaded that and it said it won't install because 10.6.4 isn't installed. Downloaded 10.6.4 and it refuses to install. Machine is stuck on 10.6.3. Software Update application says we all up to date and there are no "ignored" updates - the option to "Reset Ignored Updates" is even greyed out.
    Tried repairing Disk permissions, rebooting...nothing.
I'm very disappointed because I recommended my Dad buy this machine to get him off PC's after touting how great, stable, and easy to use my Mac is and after dropping $2500 or whatever this thing cost, he is not impressed.
    Please help, thanks.

First I would recommend doing SMC and PRAM resets. Here are the instructions:
    _SMC RESET_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
    • Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    • Release the power button.
    • Attach the computers power cable.
    • Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    _PRAM RESET_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    • Release the keys.
Next you should upgrade to 10.6.4. Here is the link to the 10.6.4 combo update. Navigate there and update the computer immediately. To me it appears you have a corrupt file if Software Update isn't finding any updates while you're on 10.6.3. You should be in touch with AppleCare and they can help you fix that.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1048
After doing the upgrade re-do the SMC and PRAM resets using the same instructions from above.
Finally repair disk permissions using Disk Utility (Applications-Utilities-Disk Utility)
If all that doesn't take care of it contact AppleCare while the machine is still covered by warranty. You get 90 days for free phone support, if you haven't already I would recommend purchasing AppleCare which will extend the warranty to 3 full years and includes 3 years of phone support. AppleCare must be purchased while the machine is still covered by it's original warranty. You can purchase AppleCare at a discount from resellers like Amazon and LA Computer Company. Just ensure you buy AppleCare for iMac.
If you don't want to get AppleCare then book an appointment at your local Apple Store and bring it in. I'm sure the problem is pretty minor.
Also a final thought, some people are in the habit of turning their computer off when their done. Apple recommends you leave it on 24/7 and let it sleep when not being used. If you are going to be away for more than a few days then turn it off. This is stated in the owner's manual.

  • Driver update for Win 7 USB issue on nVidia chipset systems now available

This patch is needed for the TouchSmart 600 AIO Desktop series if you haven't installed it.
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Lockups-Freezes-Hangs/Driver-update-for-Win7-USB-issue-on-nVidia-chipse...

The update is not part of the desktop Win7 update disc from MS or HP  - Microsoft has not yet integrated it into Win7, and it is not yet available on Windows Update (it is likely to hit there sometime in January).   It was available too late to get it out on HP Update before the holiday break.  I don't believe there have been any rolls to the Win7 upgrade disks.   I do recommend (while still on Vista) running HP Update and installing all applicable updates  - PRIOR to doing the Win7 upgrade.  Also - I'd double check the drivers page for your system for any Vista updates as well,  best to do any driver/BIOS/Video BIOS updates prior to the Win7 upgrade process.  I know that some of them were created before Windows 7 was out - and may not want to install if it sees the newer OS.
As to the fix - this could manifest itself in many ways - but essentially - this resolves system flakyness with USB devices attached .  Some internal devices (card readers, touchscreens, some Wireless LAN interfaces) connect via USB - so they could be affected, even if you haven't hooked up anything to your system externally.
Not sure just what problems you were experiencing, so can't say this was the cause (and will be the fix) - but if it applies to your system - I'd definitely give it a shot.    I checked a couple of systems that had this update - I see it now on the software drivers and update page for them, so it looks like it rolled out OK.
    Happy Holidays...

My 2006 iMac running Snow Leopard won't boot even after erasing and re-installing Snow Leopard.   I erased and re-installed by putting the iMac in Target Disk mode and usin my MacBookPro as the host.  But after numerous attempts I still can't get it to boot either from the HD or DVD drive. I just get the white screen after the wheel stops spinning.  I can't get it to run Hardware Test - just get the white screen.  If I use Disk Utility via my MBP it says the disk appears OK. All the Snow Leopad files appear to have been installed. What can I do?

Perhaps you installed the wrong version OS X onto the iMac, you can't use the disk from another Mac.
    clean the disk.
If it's not working then use this method to create a bootable 10.6 USB from the iMac machine specific 10.6 disk or the 10.6.3 retail disk on your other Mac, use it to boot the iMac with.

  • USB Issue in KT4V MS-6712 Bios 1.8

Upon updating my bios from 1.1 to 1.8, I have noticed the strangest issue that I have been unable to resolve. The system simply refuses to keep the usb ports powered unless there is a keyboard plugged into the ps/2 keyboard port, which is strange and troubling considering I use a USB MS Natural Keyboard Pro.
I have checked all the usb options in the bios, sequentially enabled and disabled usb legacy support, etc, all to no avail.
And yes, I have perused the troubleshooting threads and still have yet to find a solution to this problem. Any input would be most appreciated.

    Hi,
I'm asking MSI but I need more info.
May I know which USB ports you are plugging into? The back I/O ports beside the PS/2 ports? or the front ports or by the D-Bracket2 ports?
Please try all these possible ports see which one down and which one up. Thanks for your attempt.

  • IMAC RAM issues

I have a Mid-2010 iMAC 3.06 GHz machine.  It came with 4 GB of RAM (2x2 GB Hynix brand).  I bought 2x4 GB Corsair RAM from Bestbuy.com yesterday and it was recognized as having 12 GB or RAM.  However, it would crash every 5 to 10 mins. and reboot.  I tried switching the larger RAM to the slot the originals were in and moving the originals to the bottom.  Same problem.  I ran the hardware test from the DVD that came with the MAC and it said memory error - so I exchanged it.
This time I tried PNY RAM that said it is Mac Compatible and is the right specs.  Same issue.  It sees all 12, but crashes every 5 to 10 mins.  I did a bunch of testing this time around and found that one of the PNY chips is fine.  If I put it only in and run with 8 GB it works great.  The DVD hardware check does not report issues.  If I put the other one in by itself with the original - it sees the 8, but start acting up again.  The hardware test reports the issue.  I can even run the MAC with just the on good 4 GB PNY and it works fine.  If I put only the other one in, it won't boot.
Could I have seriously gotten two bad batches of RAM?  Could that MAC have done something to short them out?  I will probably return these for a refund... feel bad about it though.  I won't try any other RAM from Best Buy.  Where should I get an upgrade from?  Thanks for any info.

Was the RAM spec as shown below?
    Maximum Memory
32 GB (Core i5 or Core i7 Actual) 16 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    4 - 204-pin PC3-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
Please note that PNY brand RAM seems to show up on the forum as quite often causing the issues you quote on many models of Mac.

  • Lion = lackluster, USB issues

I'm very disappointed in Lion. With the exception of a few new features, it's useless and I'm shocked that Apple would publish a product like this. I've wasted $30. I never thought I would say anything like that about an Apple product. Up until now, I've never had any issues with any of the OS's.
Ever since I installed Lion, I've had USB issues. I plug something in and it doesn't work. Specifically, my iPhone, my flash drive and my USB 2.0 card reader. This is all equipment that worked flawlessly prior to the installation.
I've tried all the remedies: restart, plug and unplug the devices, tested the hub, plug and unplug from the iMac itself. Any suggestions?

I haven't heard that reported as a bug in Lion.
Have you tried an SMC reset?
    Reset PRAM first.

  • IMac Freezing Issue -Need Confirmation...

    Hey all,
I need confirmation on whether or not zapping the PRAM seems to stop the iMac freezing issue. I have had 3 freezes within 10 minutes. I restarted after my last preparation to installing Leopard and the screen saver kicked in, which is the 'Cosmos' slide show and the graphics froze up. Screen went black and I left it for a couple of minutes. I came back to it, and had an image on the screen, but it was still locked up. So I restarted it. After boot up, I opened Activity monitor, and locked up again.
So I zapped the PRAM on this 3rd restart and have not locked up since. I'd bet 100 to 1 that if I were to restart, without the PRAM reset, I would crash within 5 minutes of the start up.
I really believe without a doubt these iMac reboot issues are related to specific EFI versions failing to initialize graphics correctly.
Can anyone confirm this? If your iMac crashes, does Zapping the PRAM fix it?
I'll be calling Executive relations contact and telling her the bad news.
Okay, so first off, this isn't a solution to this iMac plague, but it should prevent the freezing and NO, it does not have to do with removing the ATI drivers.
I was asked to install Leopard by Executive relations at Apple and told her that, as soon as I do, my iMac will freeze. So, I have been preparing the Leopard install and have crashed 3 times, in a row... at that point I said, Leopard is going to be a no go but I needed to use my iMac without it crashing. So, zapped the PRAM like I did before and immediately the graphic freezes went away.
    So

Here is my experience, iMac 24:
I bought in JR NY 2 weeks ago. I had to use it without internet connection (so no updates) and no freezes.
Then I connected to internet and installed the available updates and start to get the freezes, even trying the PRAM reset.
I tried to remove the extra memory, change memory slot but no lucky, video artifacts (like pixels not refreshing) when moving the mouse over the dock icons then freeze.
I had no other softwares installed at all, only the OS applications.
I formatted the HD and reinstalled the Tiger and didn't accepted any update, so I could use the imac for 2 days without a single freeze, but some black screens when screen saver starts.
Since no freezes, I decided to update the OS again and after the first boot the freezes came back very fast, I could start a freeze in about 10 seconds.
I tried the PRAM reset without sucess and my machine was ready to go to a tech person.
Yesterday I updated the OS to 10.4.11 and did a PRAM reset after the update and tested the machine for 2 hours without a freeze or video artifacts, looks very stable, but I have to test it more.
You guys tried the Tiger last update ?

  • P45 Platinum USB issues on XP 64 Pro

My mouse (Logitech MX518) works only when plugged into one of the USB ports on my motherbeoad.  Any other port and it tries to detect new software - runs through the installation and I get a fatal error message - and the mouse does not work at all.  I can't get the Logitech Setpoint software to install either - when installing the drivers I get an error message.  I spent 2 1/2 hours on the phone with Logitech and they think it's a USB / Intel control issue.  I had a SM Bus controller error in device manager and I used the "INF Update Utility - Primarily for Intel® 4, 3, 900 Series Chipsets (2455KB)" which solved the SM Bus controller issue.  but I'm not sure that was the correct piece of software to use as the motherbeoad says its a P45 chipset.  The USB issue has existed since I powered up the machine yesterday - the Intel software installation did not impact the problem either way.  the MSI CD is useless as it doesn't seem to have any 64 bit drivers.  I've downloaded all from MSI that I can find and got the audio and LAN working but I still get the occasional blue screen for really no reason, just surfing the web and bam - blue screen.  am I missing something ciritcal for the installation?  any thoughts are appreciated on the best way to set up this 64 bit system.

I'll look up the BIOS in a second
    BIOS is                              A7512IMS V1.0 052108
I also made the change so it won't restart automatically if I get a blue screen.  And BIOS has USB Enabled. (I'm catching up!)
Alright, now I'm trying to make a bootable CD to update my BIOS.
Update: Got the USB drive BIOS to function per the MSI Forum Flash Tool, but I get an error message - Error File ROM ID incorrect - and the BIOS doesn't update.  Still listed as V1.0 and should be V1.7.  My P45 isn't listed as supported for Sure Hands, so I haven't tried that.  Don't know if that ROM error is the reason my BIOS isn't updating or not.  I cleared the CMOS, etc.  Not sure why it isn't working.

  • The USB Device you have connected has malfunctione...

Hi All, I am facing an issue with a 6681 phone while connecting via Cable to my PC. My configuration given below:
    OS: Windows XP
    Device: Nokia 6681
    Connection method: Data Cable
PC Suite Version: Came with the mobile
    Problem:
    1. It was working fine for a month. But now, I am getting the following balloon message: "The USB Device you have connected has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognise it".
    2. Strange thing is, it is working fine with my office machine, having Win XP.
    3. I am able to connect my camera to my home PC, so it is not a hardware issue.
    4. Tried uninstalling and reinstalled again, no change, getting the same error message: "The USB Device you have connected has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognise it.".
    Someone please help.
    Thanks,
    Sunil.

    Hi teurastaja,
Thank you for your response. I tried the same, but again getting the same message. It started detecting the device, then tried to install the drivers, finally it is saying, "An error occured while installing drivers. Your USB device may not be properly". After that, I am getting the previous message continously in the tray with the header "USB device not recognized". Also, I am getting the cable connection icon in the phone screen just for 2-3 seconds. After that it is diappearing. Can you suggest any solution?
    Thanks,
    Sunil.

  • My iMac G5 (with Sight) won't restart

My iMac G5 (with iSight) won't restart, every time I restart it the screen goes black and nothing happens, not even the startup chime sounds and the keyboard and mouse won't work, I can't even restart the PMU nor do anything, about a minute later the fans turn on making a very loud sound so I have to turn it down by holding the power button, after some time I manage to turn it on and everything works perfectly, but when I restart it again the samething happens, I've tried everything that appears in the support page, not even the hardware diagnostics detected a problem, even when I'm reinstalling Mac OS X when it comes to the part where it restarts itself the same thing happens.
    Does anyone have a suggestion?
    Thanks

    Contributed by Fumiaki Kawashima;
There are many reasons to become unable shutting down or restarting from Apple Menu. Some were explained by other posters.
Most importantly, loginwindow (the parent process is launchd.) close out the user session, continue to set the device permissions and user preferences to their defaults in a restart action, or the process power off the system in a shutdown action. However, the issue proves that somewhere in those routines cannot be performed.
Users authentication system seems to be intact because you can restart or shutdown from the login window. However, the admin account authenticated by the Tiger security systems could confuse somehow and affect loginwindow process for setting up the user environment. This may result in interfering with the process for the shutdown and restart mentioned above.
Test if you can shutdown from the keyboard-- Holding down controloptioncommand keys, and then press the eject key.
Check if the loginwindow plists are corrupted. To do this test, remove the followings to temporary folders on the desktop, and shutdown from the keyboard shortcut combination. Restart the computer to test the recurrence.
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist
    /Users/HOME/Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist
Try disabling Login Items for third-party applications via the Accounts system preference, if any.
Verify whether any third-party kernel extensions (including device drivers) interfere with the loginwindow hooks process-- Start up with a Safe-mode, then test the Restart from Apple Menu to see whether it works. Also, boot into a Single-user mode, and test if "reboot" command is available from the BSD layer. The I/O Kit API for software developers provides a shutdown hook so that ".kext" troubleshooting may need to be considered. Besides, some bad programmed extension may not be unloaded automatically at a shutdown or restart.
If the computer is configured with Irish language Input method and/or third-party Irish keyboard, try disabling them to test.
A third-party application or custom script may interfere with the loginwindow hooks for the Shut Down or Restart. For example, if you install an application that prevents casually powering down a system, the Shut Down and Restart buttons may not work. Also, if you install a P2P file sharing application, try uninstalling it.
As last resorts, troubleshoot a bad RAM and consider "Erase and Install" solution.
    OPTION:
Post a part of system.log that indicates events from "localhost kernel[0]: standard timeslicing quantum is 10000 us" to the next same line.
This may help to narrow down because restarting or shutting down the system process can initiate the procedure programmatically by sending an appropriate Apple event to Mac OS X Tiger's system process (loginwindow).
Likewise, check console.log whether any failures is reported.
    Corrections:
Most importantly, the loginwindow (the parent process is launchd.) close out the user session, continue to set the device permissions and user preferences to their defaults in a restart action, or the process power off the system in a shutdown action.
However, the admin account authenticated by the Tiger security systems could confuse somehow and it may impact on the loginwindow process for setting up the user environment. This may result in interfering with the process for the shutdown and restart as mentioned above.
