Strange intermittent gulping sound

For some weeks now I hear intermittently a strange sound coming from my speakers. It lasts about a second, and because of this and also because it comes at random moments, I cannot make a recording of it so I will try to describe it.
It starts as a twittering sound, like small birds. and then below this sustained sound, and very low pitched come three gulping sounds, like bubbles under water, in a rising cadence. It is musical in the way the startup chime is musical and is in fact quite pleasing to the ear. It can be heard about every forty minutes or so more or less. It only disturbs me because I don't know what it means and I don't know where it comes from. I am concerned that it may be some kind of malware but if it is, it appears to be mischievous rather than malicious.
Now. It is not a mechanical sound. It has been digitally created of that I am sure. It is loud when my speakers are turned up and soft when they are turned down. I have closed all my running programs but it still comes. It is there when the computer sleeps. I have checked all preferences of all applications noting particularly warning or alerts therein without result. In particular I have checked Mail to see if an E-mail comes in at the same time, but there is no correspondence. It is not the "submarine" sound of mail's incoming traffic alert although there are some similarities in timbre. Nothing in Systems Preferences seem to cause it. I have turned off all in "Universal Access". It is not any of the supplied sound effects of the "Sound" Preference pane and I turned off "Play user interface sound effects".
I have kept my console open and checked it when the sound comes but nothing happens on the console. I re-installed and re-updated Snow Leopard. Still there. Have done Google searches and ploughed through discussion groups innumerable. Nothing. I use iAntvirus which has never detected any malware. If you notice hair falling out of your computer when you open this topic -it is mine!
The following is the list from my applications folder as this may help. In addition is a program called Surplus Meter which resides on my Dock and is always open.

It's a puzzlement!
And I would appreciate your help if you can and will give it.
Many thanks. Plazatoro

Thank you Musicwind95, Bee and Mike for your prompt replies and helpful suggestions.
Mike it is not a sound from the Skype sound alert menu. These are all single notes whereas my "Deus ex machina" is polysyllabic and contains several notes. Musicwind95 - I didn't realize one could do that with quicktime x. You opened up a whole new world to me. I patiently recorded for two hours without the sound coming up, and indeed I haven't heard the thing all day. It's like the annoying rattle in your car which disappears the moment you drive into the mechanic's workshop! Now I don't know which is more frustrating: hearing the thing or not hearing it. Particularly as I would really have liked you all to have heard it - I think you would have found it interesting. I have been pondering why it chose to stop playing at this moment for I can't remember doing anything in particular except post the phenomenon into this discussion group and it would be weird indeed if that is why it stopped!
So. If it does return I'll endeavour to record it post it to u tube and resume this discussion.
In the meantime thanks once again to you
Len

I have a HP Pavilion 1070d PC.  I get an intermittent beeping sound from my PC internal speaker.  It seems to engage when the hard drive starts working when it's been down for a while.  How do I disable the beeping sound?

    Domgoh, welcome to the forum.
Normally, the beeps that come from a computer are BIOS beep codes.  They are warnings that something is wrong with the computer.  At the bottom of the page in the link that I provided are codes for different motherboards.  Review them to see if this is what you are receiving.

  • Strange "camera shutter" sound on form submit and screensaver activation

My MBP has recently starting making a sound that I can only liken to a camera shutter when my screen saver activates. It's not the sound that the photo booth shutter makes, but is strange "shhhh-TINK" sound that makes me worry about the future of my display. At first I thought it only happened when my screensaver came on while on battery power, but now I am noticing it just about any time the screensaver comes on, and over the past few days, it's been happening when I auto-fill forms using 1Password.
    Best,
    Bill

I have created a power point with some sample images to show what I mean, slide 4 demonstrates this problem

I think what is happening is that when the JSF Lifecycle builds the server side representation of the control tree it is for some reason duplicating these controls, I am not farmiliar enough with the Lifecycle to know exactly why???
    Any thoughts?

  • Strange, Frequent electronic sounds after waking iMac from sleep.

Since i began syncing my iPhone (8GB) V.1.0.2 to my 20" 2.4Ghz iMac, a strange electronic, interference sound come from the computer immediately after I wake it from sleep.
The sound starts as the Comp awakens and continues off and on frequently for about 5-10 minutes. After that times passes, the strange sound ceases temporarily. Once 10 minutes have passed the time interval between the electrical interference sound is 10 minutes or so. I have the same desktop speakers plugged into the audio out jack that I have for a month now.
The odd thing is I can MUTE the sounds from the keyboard button and the sound continues regardless. I believe the sound is coming from the built in speakers rather than the external speakers.
Also, this problem crept up before the iMac update today.
I tried searching the forums here but I didn't turn anything up. can anyone suggest a solution?

I just noticed that the closer my iPhone is to the speakers in my Intel iMac or my home theaters speakers causes a frequent audible interference. Is this a known issue with AT&T's GSM or is it something unique to the iPhone?

  • I use Garageband 09 to record voice overs via podcasting, female narrator noisy, but keep getting an intermittent clicking sound. It's not the metronome. I have a good quality external USB mic plugged in. Any ideas?

I use GarageBand 09 to record voice overs via the Podcasting then Female Narrator Noisy utility. I have a good quality external mic plugged in. I keep getting an intermittent clicking sound on the audio track. It's not the metronome as that is turned off. I have to edit out the clicking after recording. I can see the spikes on the waveline. Any ideas how I can prevent this happening?

Hi again and thanks so much for replying.
The 'mic jack' on the old mic is both wide and large, measuring about an inch and a quarter from the base (where it comes out of the black encasing) to the edge of the tip (sort of cone shaped). As I can't plug this in directly to any port in the back of the Mac, I thought it might be possible to to buy some sort of adapter so that I could plug in the jack at one end, with a USB connector at the other end to go straight into the Mac. But I see from your comment that you are suggesting a smaller jack itself (i.e., large size jack to small size jack and then plug in to the small round port, instead of jack to USB port)?
At the Mac shop I bought a USB adapter to connect up a second monitor (screen). I've just dug out the package and it's called a mini display port to VGA adapter. But back to the mic issue, I don't want to use the old mic really, I'm just trying to eliminate whether or not my usual mic, or its USB cable, is at fault and causing the clicking.
I looked on Amazon for a suitable adapter but there was mention of these little gadgets having a sound card. As the Mac obviously has its own internal sound card, I couldn't see the point of another (exernal) one, unless it was actually required to convert the sound from input to output (playback) or something. One review said sound quality was lost but the person had a problem with his speakers, not a ticking sound while playing back recordings - which is obviously my problem.
I do have a headset that I used to use for Skype. It has a pink and a green jack. I could plug one into the "headphones symbol' port and try recording again with Garageband. At least the jack is the right size. Again, this is just for the purpose of eliminating whether my good mic on a stand with the anti-popping sheild is at fault.
While my Mac does have both inbuilt speakers (I don't need external ones) and an inbuilt microphone, the latter is not of a high enough quality for voice overs, hence buying an external mic etc. But whatever is causing the clicking or ticking is obviously affecting the quality of my recordings. As you can imagine, it is very time-consuming to edit out the ticking spikes and if the noise appears during speech, you can't edit it out at all.
Please keep the suggestions coming. I am determined to get to the bottom of this for my sake and everyone else who is suffering from the same problem!

  • Intermittent Scratchy Sounds

I have intermittent scratchy sounds occurring in my songs.  Anyone know aht might cause this and how to fix it?

Hello and welcome to the Forums. You stated you did a hard reset. Did you sync the device afterward? If so and it's a software issue that is causing the problem, it will still occur. If you have synced, what you need to do is back up your data and hard reset again. DO NOT sync the device for 24 to 48 hours and see if the ringer issues come back. If they do then this tells us it is a hardware issue and the device will need to be repaired or replaced. If it resolves the ringer issue what you will need to do is rename your backup folder and sync. This will put your PIM data only on the device and not any 3rd party software. If you are running XP on your PC to rename the backup folder go to C: Local disc / Program files / Palm or palmone folder / your username / and open that folder up and find the one named backup. To rename it right click and choose rename. Call it backupold. Now any 3rd party app. that are in that folder you can doubleclick on the .prc filename of the app and it will put it in palm desktop installer and put it back on your device the next time you sync. Do these 3rd party apps. one at a time and run the device 24 hours in between adding the next one. When you add one and then the ringer starts acting up this will tell you that is the sofware that is causing the problem for the ringer and you can just delete that application.   Hope this helps....

  • Strange intermittent sound

    Hi
My mac book air keeps making this "scratching" / "electronic" sound that is made every 10 minutes for a second. Its coming from the speakers like there is a programme requesting it but i dont know what is causing it and its annoying.

  • Strange!  Loops sound bizarre in Loop Browser - but not the original CD

    Hi,
Just bought Jazz Essentials from Beta Monkey Music... Apple Loops from a Third Party. I put in the CD - and dragged all the folders at once into the Apple Loops Browser. Took awhile to copy...
All the loops sound like they are going through a gated reverb or a delay - really bizarre - and not very pretty to listen to. Yet, when I listen to samples from the CD - no reverb - and no bizarre-ness.
Suggestions? I probably should drag one folder at a time - right? But, if so - how do I delete all these bad loops now?
    Thanks in advance!

You won't believe this - it's still not working!!!!
Still sounds bizarre - I did everything you said... thanks anyways...
    This is so strange!
There is a "full sample" with each new set of samples - in other words - the original 3 minutes sample that the smaller, cut up samples were taken from: these 'full' samples sound FINE... it's the cut up ones that sound strange as heck.
Remember - they sound fine on the CD... so odd.

  • Very strange problem with sound in dvd player

    Hi
I have a strange issue which I am cannot resolve. I recently purchased season 2 of NYPD Blue on dvd, region 1 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00008YGRR/qid=1151702794/sr=1-3/ref=sr13/103-1409159-4182204?s=dvd&v=glance&n=130). The season is spread over several discs. The region of the dvds is the same as that of the superdrive on my 1.25 factory spec 15” pb running 10.4.6.(always has been region1) On playing the dvds in dvd player, the sound is very quiet, and you can hear a slight hissing noise (picture is fine). However, if I set the balance of the speakers in system preferences to the left (as far as I can) the sound becomes louder and the hissing disappears. Hence the sound is normal, other that the fact that it is unbalanced. The same happens if I set the balance to the right. Hence the hiss is only there when the balance is set to the centre or around it i.e. slightly to the left or right. This problem is true of all the dvds in the set.
Fair enough, the nypd discs are defective.
However, I then played them in a standalone dvd player without any fancy sound settings etc and no problems at all. Hence I then thought that the problem was with my pb - the only different thing I have done lately is use handbrake to put some of my other dvds (not these NYPD ones) on my iPod, so I thought that handbrake had done something (although I don’t know see how it could have done anything). However, today I tried some other commercial dvds in my pb (produced by the same company) and they sounded fine as has been the case for over two years. Hence, there is something about the nypd blue dvds which affects the quality of the sound output in my pb when the balance is centred. However, whatever this is it doesn’t seem to bother standalone players, nor is it something that anoth of my other dvds have.
Any ideas on what exactly is going on here, as it has me stumped.
(I don't have any other season of nypd blue, so I can't see if these have the same problem as well.)

  • Strange mac mini sound issue with HDMI cable

I connected my mac mini to my Panasonic 44 inch HDTV with a DVI to HDMI adapter. I didin't get sound through the cable like i expected. Then I connected a 3mm to RCA jacks adapter to the analog HDMI port on the TV and still no sound. Strangely, when i switched resolutions from 1920 X 1080 to 1200 X 720 the sound started working through the audio ports. It works on every resolution except 1920 X 1080. Any ideas why this is so? Or how to fix it?

First off, the DVI standard makes no provision for carrying sound. That is why you didn't hear any sound when making a DVI-to-HDMI connection from your mini to your TV through the adapter. I am assuming there must be a setting on your TV that is snuffing the sound input from the mini rather than the mini not outputing sound at 1920x1080. This would be easy to prove. Just pull the audio minijack connector from the mini's sound out and I'm guessing you will hear sound coming from the mini's speaker.
Is it possible that, on your TV set, you have associated 1920x1080 with an expectation of HDMI input? Maybe the TV is expecting to find digital audio over the HDMI input and somehow that association is only with that one resolution. Then when you drop resolutions it is looking for sound over the analog port instead of over the HDMI port. I'm just guessing here, but it's something you can check.

  • Intermittent USB Sound Output

I have an Al Macbook Running Leopard, 10.5.8. I just purchased a Monoprice Mini Displayport Male and USB Male Audio to HDMI Female Converting Adapter
    http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?cid=104&cp_id=10428&cs_id=1042802&pid=5969&seq=1&format=2
The goal is to output both video and sound from my computer to my audio receiver’s HDMI input then onto my TV and my surround sound speakers. The first time I set up my system I wasn’t getting any sound thru the USB to my receiver. I then plugged and unplugged the cables multiple times and got the sound to work. I didn’t change any settings in my Preference panel. Last night I hooked my computer back up to the cable and it didn’t output sound. Is there a sure fire method to ensure that my USB port is outputting sound to my HDMI adapter?
One other symptom, when I was getting sound out of my cables, I could close the lid of the computer and still get video and sound out. Last night, when I was using the cables and I tried to shut my lid, the computer went to sleep and I lost all video signals.

    Hi, Ulyssesbob ,
    welcome
first of all, i don't know about the adapter you are using. but here are a few remarks:
    1) closing the lid of the MB means that is has to go to sleep. So the instance you quote, that it continued playing video and music, is not normal. it is normal to stop all activity when you close the lid of the MB.
    2) when setting up new connections with sound (and video), the system needs a bit (few seconds) of time to recognize things. Once there are multiple output possibilities, the system can chose by itself the one you would like, but a priori, the MB doesn't know which one is the right one. You should check the Syst.Prefs and set it to the one you need. This also implies: if you disconnect, the MB might change the Syst. Prefs by its own decision, since it will not put output to an nonexisting device...
I would try to reset it up, slowly, and controlling every step you are doing by looking at the system prefs settings. Hope this works out. If you still have problems, or your MB behaves strangely, please report back.

  • Strange clicking/tapping sound in the background of my music in my iTunes player.  Any idea how to make it stop?

There is a strange clicking sound in the background of my music in my iTunes player.  It sounds a bit like a horse galloping faintly in the background trying to keep up with the music!  Any idea of how to make it stop?  It doesn't matter what I'm listening to, doesn't happen in between songs, and has never happened in the 4 years I've owned this iMac.

  • [Solved] Strange error with sound modules

If i modprobe any sound modules, i get strange errors which tell me to lookup dmesg.
    The error output looks like
WARNING: Error inserting snd_mixer_oss (/lib/modules/2.6.13-ARCH/kernel/sound/core/snd-pcm.ko): unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
FATAL: Error inserting snd_pcm_oss (/lib/modules/2.6.13-ARCH/kernel/sound/core/oss/snd-pcm-oss.ko): Unknown symbol in modules or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
The same for my soundcard drivers etc, simply any alsa module.
    My modprobe.conf looks as follows.
    install snd-pcm modprobe -i snd-pcm; modprobe snd-pcm-oss; true
    install snd-seq modprobe -i snd-seq; modprobe snd-seq-oss; true
    options snd device_mode=666
    alias snd-card-0 snd-ens1397
    alias sound-slot-0 snd-ens1371
Well, this should work fine (as i know). Looking up dmesg i get the following:
    snd_pcm_oss: Unknown symbol snd_info_unregister
    snd_pcm_oss: Unknown symbol snd_info_get_line
    snd_pcm_oss: Unknown symbol snd_pcm_format_width
I've got this problem since i updated to 2.6.13-ARCH.
Since this problem causes hotplug to take 10 minutes to start, it's annoying. I'd appreciate any hint what i could try.
    Thank you,
