Strange internet troubles
A few weeks ago I installed a new motherboard and processor in my computer. Long story short I ended up reinstalling Windows XP. At first my internet wouldn't work at all until I installed the drivers that came with my MB. Realtek Gbe & FE ethernet PCI-E NIC driver. After that, it worked fine, in fact it seemed faster than it ever had been. However, every once in a while, perhaps once a week or so, the internet will slow to an unbearable crawl, usually timing out on sites or taking several minutes and only loading the site partially. The only solution I've found to this is to go to the basic wireless setup on my router (WRT54G) and change the "wireless network mode" setting. It doesn't matter what I change it to or from, but as soon as I do it works fine again.
This is becoming a severe irritation as it can take a very very long time to get into the basic wireless setup when the internet is like that. I have no idea what's going on and any help would be very appreciated.
Did you secured your network ? It might happen that somebody is using your network...So put the security on the router setup page under wireless security.
If your network is already secured then either change the security key or choose the higher level security like WPA or WPA2.

Very Strange Internet Problems
I own a MacBook Pro 15.4 Inch that I purchased about a year and a half ago. I recently upgraded to Leopard and have all the latest updates. I am from the US, and when I am home my internet works fine. However, I am on travel to Seoul, South Korea right now and am having a very strange internet problem.
As far as I can tell, the URLs that I type in to my browser are, sparodially, not translated correctly into the webpages that they are supposed to represent. This problem is probably effective 75% of the time, and the rest of the time my internet works roughly correctly. For instance, when I enter http://www.google.com, instead of being taken to the Google homepage, I am taking to the homepage of Jammin Beats DJ Service, an obscure website about a company in northern Pennsylvania. The actual URL of this website is http://www.jamminbeats.com, but when my internet is malfunctioning, 'jamminbeats' is for all intensive purposes replaced by 'google' (that is, it applies not only to the main page, but to sub pages, so "http://www.google.com/weddings" takes you to "http://www.jamminbeats.com/weddings" and etc). For most other webpages, one of two things happens. Either I am taken to the correct page but it is displayed without any images or frames (just the html text and links), or I am taken to a blank page with the header "Under Construction", which I assume is the default for a page that doesn't exist. This is why it seems as though the URLs are simply being interpretted erroneously.
This problem occurs when connecting both to the wireless and the wired internet at my hotel, and it occurs on both Safari and Firefox, so it is not a connection-specific or browser-specific problem. It may be a problem with the hotel's internet, and as of yet I have not had a chance to test the computer at another location. However, a colleague using an IBM computer has had no problems, and I am currently on a Samsung machine in the business center of the hotel and it is working correctly as well. I have searched extensively online for a similar problem but have come up empty handed, and more than anything, I am confused about what might be causing this problem. The strangest thing is that a fraction of the time, the internet functions normally, but it is usually roughly 15 minutes out of every hour, and eventually I am inevitably taken back to Jammin Beats.
I am a computer science graduate but I still have no idea what would cause this problem. At first I thought it might be a hacker, but if it is, he or she has been at it consistently for 3 days now, and only seems to be targeting my computer. Any ideas or solutions would be greatly appreciated, as I have been forced to resort to the hotel's business center for checking email, doing work, etc. Thanks in advance.I did consider that, as I was in Beijing last week and there are a number of censored sites. However, in Korea I have had problems with very basic sites like facebook, wall street journal, google, yahoo, Korean google, my hotel's webpage, etc. Further, I have successfully gotten all of these sites to load seemingly at random, and can access them without problems on other computers. The only disconnect seems to be between my MBP and the internet, not between Korean internet and the web. I have toyed around with the network settings, and although sometimes after switching from "Automatic" to a fixed connection I get some sites to work, it usually only lasts a short time and eventually the same sites stop working. I reset my cache regularly to make sure I'm not getting sent to cached sites, but this also doesn't help. Further, my Apple Mail, Skype and AIM accounts jump between being connected and disconnected randomly as well. Again, this is isolated to my own computer, which is why I'm so confused.

A strange Internet connectivity error whern using IE 9
Hello,
I experience very strange Internet connectivity issue which happens specifically with Capital One Banking site. I wonder if somebody else already reported the same problem.
I'm on Windows 7 machine with Verizon DSL connection and uses both Internet Explorer 9 and Firefox 4.0.
The same thing happenes every time I try to use IE to make a payment. A first payment screen opens normally, but after she enters payment information and hit Continue it starts to spin and after a couple of minutes of fruitful attempts it BREAKS Internet connection!
Windows allows to fix Internet connections settings, normally blaming bad default gateway settings. Then it is enough to open your site in IE and try to pay to break it again.
Firefox, on the other end, works normally and allows to pay. So, it looks like an error in IE, but really strange one.
I also have another Win 7 machine and IE 9; the only difference is that it is on Comcast Cable rather than on Verizon DSL. There I can pay to Capital One using IE 9 without any problems. So, it must be a combination of IE bug and Verizon Internet settings, I guess. Are the machines by any chance using different Security Software or have you by any chance installed Verizon software onto the PC hooked into the DSL service?

Strange internet behavior in Lion 10.7.2
After updating to Lion 10.7.2 something very strange started happening. While using Safari the internet bogs down at random (the connection still works) it just doesn't load pages at all for a moment and then continues like nothing happened afterwards until next bogdown. The strange thing is that if I while the internet doesn't work connect my iPhone 4 to the same WiFi as the mac is connected to the connection speeds up again and continues to work.
I don't know if it is some very strange bug or could it be the router that has problem with handling some iCloud syncing that the mac does to check for new "things" or something like that?Greetings,
You need version 1.3 of Growl, according to some other poster. I didn't know people still used it - it has always been a pain, and caused some of the most troublesome performance issues on a Mac using any version of OS X.
It's dis-allowed at my site that has Macs, for several hundred users - too many, random, headaches. I know the techs don't put it on any of the machines at the college where my day job is, and the machines are locked down........
Cheers,
M. -
Strange Internet behavior??
I have been able to surf any site on the internet freely until the last couple of days, now in Safari when I try to access certain sites (including apple!!!) it will just sit there until it times out, but other sites (like the Unofficial Apple Weblog) work just fine, also I've noticed that iTunes will also time out trying to access the iTunes Store. I've checked my networked settings 2 times and everything seems to be fine.
I've also reset them once or twice, so I do not believe it is my network that is the problem. What could be causing this to happen? I'm running the latest iTunes and OSX, and I'm on a wireless network routed by a linksys W54TG( I think thats what it is called). Thank you in advance for your help. I'm not at my computer as of right now (which is why I can access this site hehe), so if you need me to try anything I won't be able to try until 8:00 PM. Thank you again.Hi. You can try using another browser to see if it behaves the same way as Safari does. But you also said you were having trouble with iTunes so it may not be browser related.
Many times problems such as yours are related to the ISP. Especially if everything has been working fine and then connectivity problems develop. Frequently, their tech support will not own up to problems or they may not even be aware of some of them.
Just a couple of ideas. How's it working now?
Regards,
Steve M. -
Very Strange Internet Access Behavior After upgrade to systemd
Currently I'm having very strange issues with my wireless connection. Currently, if I connect using netcfg to a wireless access point, I have the following behavior:
1. chromium can connect to any website
2. thunderbird can send/receive emails
3. curl, firefox and opera can connect to some https sites but not http (yes: https://www.facebook.com, https://bbs.archlinux.org, no: https://archlinux.org, https://github.com)
4. wget does not connect, neither does pacman -Syu
after I upgraded to systemd, I was getting errors because of groups, so I removed extra groups. Here's what I have now:
There is currently no rc.conf in /etc
$ id ambantis
uid=1000(ambantis) gid=100(users) groups=100(users)
$ id root
uid=0(root) gid=0(root) groups=0(root),1(bin),2(daemon),3(sys),4(adm),19(log),1000(wheel)
If I try to remove the wheel group, then netcfg does not allow me to connect, neither can I connect manually with wpa_supplicant and dhcpcd
Here's the output of $ systemctrl

Got a new MBP, 15inch, late 2008 and am having trouble getting on internet.
My wife's Powerbook gets on there fine as well as our iPod Touch 2nd gen but this Macbook Pro is having issues.
It'll recognize my wireless network and then it won't, I'll put in the password and it'll reject it (even though I KNOW it's correct), network timeout, etc?
I've tried restarting the Airport Extreme but nothing helps. Again, this only happens with my new Macbook Pro, late '08, unibody.
I'm wondering if, when I did the MIgration Assistant, of settings/files from Powerbook to this, if there's something there that's providing confusion here.
ThanksThe orange light on the front is for Wireless Protected Setup. Can't be used on the FiOS routers at the moment due to a lack of software support the last I've heard. It honestly does sound like the router was bricked either from a defect or a failed firmware upgrade, though to be sure, hold down the reset button on the back for 30 seconds, power off the router for 30 seconds holding the button down still, and then power it up holding down the reset button for 30 seconds. Then let go. See if the router will boot.

The first to bring me 1Gbps Fiber for $30/m wins! -
Hi,
For the past few weeks I have been having the most annoying trouble with my connection to the internet from my MacBook Pro. I live in a dorm where we connect to the internet via LAN. Last quarter there were no problems connecting, and my internet was blazing fast. However, recently my connection is either extremely sluggish or non-existent. Although, at times I will open my browser and it will load a few pages with speed and then it will stop, saying it has lost or cannot connect to the server. My roommate is having no trouble on his PC and others that I know with Macs are having no trouble either. Also, I have the same troubles with other networks unconnected to the school, like a Starbucks. My network settings say that I have connection, and yet there is none. Can anyone help?!From your post you're saying that a wired connection in your dorm and a wireless connection at Starbucks exhibit the same problem?
I'd start by making sure that (or at least trying to have) your Network configuration for both Ethernet & Airport is set to use DHCP - which allows your network setup to adjust itself to the correct connection settings.
If you have static (manual) settings they might be conflicting with the sub-networks that you're joining. -
Very strange internet connection speed issue,
Good Evening all.
I have a strange issue. I got hooked up with a new ISP a few weeks ago and since that time I have had very slow PC connection speeds. I have done speed tests, and I get between 16 and 17mbps down, but the PC runs and acts like I am getting 4 to 5mbps. I have a Compaq Presario running Windows Vista Home Premium. Service Pack 2. There is 3 gig of ram and a 3ghz processor, with a 32 bit OS.
Here is how the setup looks. The netgear modem is plugged into a regular phone jack and then goes through a router and then it is hardwired to the PC. If I wire the PC direcly to the modem instead of going through the router, I get the same mbps no matter what. Between 16 and 17.
The wierd thing is that I can watch a movie on Netflix through my Wii with no issues. This is strange to me because I would figure there to be more issues with wireless connections rather than wired connections.
I have a netgear modem and a netgear router.
I am almost wondering if my PC is not processing the incoming speed correctly. I don't know if this is correct, because I used to have Xfinity internet before this new internet and had absolutely no problems. BTW my new ISP is called Edge Networks. The boast speeds up to 30mbps. I know that 16 to 17 is pretty good, I just do not know why It seems like I am not getting anywhere near that.
While on the subject, I also have another PC that I have gotten a USB adapter and am using wireless to access the internet. This PC gets 5 to 6mbps down. It is a Compaq running Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1. It has 3 gig ram and a 64 bit OS with a 2.3ghz processor.
I do not have a clue why I have such slow inernet page loading speeds, other than the possibility that my PC's are just severly outdated.
Can anyone help explain this issue?Evadfa, welcome to the forum.
I suggest contacting your ISP for help with the problem. They should be able to help you since they know their product better than anyone. I don't believe that it is a computer problem, since it is happening on two separate computers.

Strange internet connection behavior
I am experiencing strange behavior with my internet connection. Overall, it's erratic. E.g., when I boot the system, the internet connection fails. Yet, after it does so, I am able to run my browser, load web pages, access streaming media -- all while right-clicking on the internet connection button on the menu bar shows no connection in effect.
However, for the most part I am unable to to download my email -- though occasionally that works, too.
Finally, I am never able to initiate an internet connection. E.g., if I right-click on the connection button in the menu bar and click on "Connection PPPoE," the system eventually informs me that it "could not find a PPPoE server."
Throughout, my DSL modem shows that I am connected.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Eric WeirThe MacBook is connected directly to a DSL modem. No router.
I checked and reset my account settings, although they were as you recommend before I did so. I also reset the modem -- disconnected power for about 30 seconds, then held the reset button in for about 10 seconds after reconnecting the power cable.
After doing that the system attempted to connect and reported it couldn't find a PPPoE server. After getting that report, however, I was able to load web pages and download my mail.
Checking network settings through system preferences with the situation as above shows that I have an ethernet connection but not a PPPoE connection. However, if, with the window for the latter selected, I click on "help me" and then "diagnostics," the system reports that the internet connection is working properly.
Bottom line at this point? I can load web pages and download email, but the menu bar indicates no connection. Paralleling that, the system says I have no PPPoE connection, but diagnostics says the internet connection is working properly.
Five minutes from now I may or may not be able to download email. I probably will be able to load web pages.
An AT&T technician is scheduled to be here this afternoon. This strikes me as an operating system problem, however, not a problem with my ISP.
Again, additional clues would be appreciated.
Sincerely,
Eric Weir -
Really Strange Internet COnnectivity Problem
I have a wireless-G 2.4Ghz Broadband Router (Model No. WRT54G) with three computers (all wireless) and two printers (both wired) hooked up to it, but right now only one computer is able to recieve any internet connectivity whatsoever.
I've tried repairing the connection, turning off both the modem and the router and leaving them off for 15 minutes, and still I have had no luck.
Any suggestions?one way to check if you have internet connection is to go to the command prompt and type in >ping yahoo.com if you get 4 replies, then you have the connection. open your internet explorer and click on tools. on the general tab, click delete files and delete also cookies. try to use default security and make sure on the connections tab, the "never dial a connection" radio button is selected. click on the LAN connections sub-tab and uncheck all the boxes in there. try to open a website now using your internet explorer.

Internet trouble using Macbook and Airport extreme
I have a new Macbook and an older airport extreme base station. I'm trying to access the internet with a dial-up connection, however, after the base station dials the number it gets hung up on "connecting to your ISP" and I can't surf the net. I've contacted my ISP and they said that the connection is fine. I've tried everything that I can think of......please help...
JesseI set it up using the cd that came with it and 90% of the time it is unable to make connections to the internet.
Unless something has changed recently, I'm not aware that Linksys provides a CD setup for Macs. However, you can access the Linksys's setup via a web browser, like Safari.
My question is can I just buy a airport extreme base station and hook it up to her dsl and use it as a stand alone?
You certainly could and it would work just fine.
Does it need any other equipment other that the base station and a wireless macbook?
You will just need an Ethernet cable to connect the AEBS to the DSL modem. -

Time Capsule 2TB set up as "Bridging Only." In this configuration, I can ping Internet addresses and UNC names, but Safari cannot connect to any web pages. I cannot connect to the App Store nor connect other applications that require Internet access.
If I change the mode to "DHCP with NAT," everything works fine. Except the Time Capsule complains that there is "double NAT."
This problem occurs on a MacBook Pro and two iPads. In each case, the laptop or tablet shows a good connection to the Time Capsule and can ping by address or UN name, but other apps report that they cannot connect to the server.
Any ideas how to fix this issue? Thanks. Thanks for your reply. The screen shots you requested are below. I did reboot the devices (but not the Time Capsule) in between config changes.
The network setup is a Charter cable modem into a Cisco PIX router/firewall with no outbound restrictions. The PIX LAN address is 172.28.1.1. I have a Microsoft SBS Server at 172.28.1.2 that is providing DHCP addresses on the 172.28.1.0/24 subnet.
If I assign a static IP address to the MacBook, it behaves the same way: I can ping IP addresses and UNC names, but Safari and App Store cannot connect. BTW, for whatever reason, if I set the Mac's DNS to 8.8.8.8, nothing is reachable. I have to set it back to the SBS server's address to get any connectivity at all.
I mentioned earlier that two iPads do the same thing. They are connected to the wireless network and show up as Time Capsule clients, and I can ping from an app on the iPad. But no Safari or App Store connectivity. -
Wireless Internet Trouble - Vista Ultimate on intel iMac w/Bootcamp
I successfully installed Vista Ultimate onto my new iMac using bootcamp. However, when I boot into Vista, I cannot connect to the internet using the built in wireless card.
When I go to device manager, Vista recognizes that I have a Broadcom wireless adapter, but it gives an error saying that it cannot work. The info that it gives me is below.
*Device: Broadcom 802.11 Network Adapter*
*Driver: Provider: Microsoft*
*Driver: 4.82.28.56*
*Deviced Status: This device cannot start (code 10)*
I tried installing the broadcom drive from my leopard DVD and it crashed Vista. I deleted the current driver (which doesn't work) and reinstalled a driver that I downloaded and it didn't work. I just downloaded and installed Bootcamp update to 2.1 and still I get the same device status.
Can anyone help! I can't even get to the point where other people are having problems because their wifi is super slow. At least that would be progress for me!I have Vista home premium 32 bit, on the iMac and my I downloaded Broadcom driver version 4.170.25.12. Going through a slightly odd Broadcom website I found and downloaded it. The speed I get is perfect but in the course of a day it will disconnect from the router frequently for maybe 5-10 mins. Still not good enough so at the moment I am stuck with a ethernet cable across the room. What driver version are you using?
