Strange iPod Shuffle(!)-Symbols in Startup Manager

Hello World,
i have a small problem, rather a matter of strange behavior, but it is kind of annoying and i would be really pleased if someone knows a method to solve this.
As the title tells, the startup manager (enter with 'alt/option' pressed on startup) is showing iPod-symbols instead of HD's. The problem occurred after my Girlfriend plugged her iPod Shuffle in my MacBook 5,1 (13", unibody, late 2008) to charge and fill it with music from my iTunes-library. Only the Bootcamp partition still has its HD-symbol but my Macintosh HD and other startup partitions, when plugged in the usb port, are shown as iPod Shuffles! Ever experienced that?
So far i:
- tried to update the EFI - failed because i already had the latest update and the app told me my computer 'doesn't need that update',
-same with the SMC update,
-set up a new system because i lately replaced the HD with a bigger one,
-ran TechToolPro and Onyx to check the computer of any unusualness.
I'm running out of ideas, if you have any suggestions, i would be glad to hear from you.
Thx,
Quarko

Hi, thanks for your quick reply.
Yes, i can still boot up normally, in Os X and Win..err too. As i said, its just a curiosity, seeing this silver iPod Shuffle picture instead of the HD symbol we all know.

  • ** Strange iPod Shuffle 512 Problem **

Not sure what is going on with my 512 Shuffle, but I am almost certain it's not a hardware issue.
Anyone with insights, please post... Here's the story:
Problem first manifested itself as a Shuffle that reported incorrect memory capacity; the iPod Updater reported that it had a capacity of 114 MB, and iTunes reported that it was 83 MB full, with 31 MB Free (STRANGE, huh -- iTunes lists the Shuffle as empty, BTW). Regarless of what I copy onto the Shuffle it will not play -- it simply alternates amber/green LEDs.
I believed I had a HW problem. Went to my local Apple store, had a "Genius" look at it and he quickly swapped it out. The nice gentleman placed a few tunes on the new Shuffle, I verified that it played, and drove home. After plugging it in and launching iTunes, it began to behave exactly as the last one did. AAARRRGGGHHHHH!
Just to isolate the issue, I installed the new FW 1.1.2 and iTunes 6.0.1 on another computer (one that has never had either piece of software installed). Guess what, it all works perfectly.... So I'm now concluding that there is something amis on the primary computer; specifically with the USB entry for the device (I think).
So here's the rub... I've removed iTunes, and all other remnants of "Apple," "iTunes," "iPod," etc. I can find on the disc and in the Windows Regsitry. However, no matter how deep I explore, I can't seem to undue whatever is hosed on this computer.
Is there a forum post or some registry utility that I can use to kill all instances of my shuffle? Given my success on the other system, I'm hoping that if I can truely start from ground zero, I'll be okay. But for the life of me, I can't seem to get there.
    THANKS IN ADVANCE......

I REALLY don't want to have to bvlow away and reinstall Windows XP. Anyone have experience here? My best guess would be a refresh of the Shuffle USB Windows Registry settings. Any know of an some undreground Apple utility?

  • IPod Shuffle ( 1st gen ) sync musics

I can't sync songs with my iPod shuffle. I tried to reset the settings but it don't solve anything except for formatting the whole ipod. When i opened it again with iTunes, I put an iPod's and uncheck the autofill of random songs. After updating, I tried to put new songs and it updated but it don't transfer the songs. When I do chose the autofill with random songs at new reset. It fills it with songs but when I tried to delete the songs in iPod. It don't disappear and it always remain in it and the only way to delete those is to reset again my iPod. By the way, I have the latest software for the iPod shuffle.

Okay. I managed to work with it and I solved it. Haha

  • How can I copy a playlist in order to ipod shuffle

I am tryig to copy a playlist to the iPod shuffle and can't manage to cophy it in the same order.  I have selected "manually manage music" and I have turned off shuffling in the device.  I have tried everything, from copying the songs one by one, to copying the playlist manually.  I don't succeed and have no idea how it determines in which order to place the songs.  Help !!!!

If you are using the Manually manage music setting, select the shuffle in the iTunes sidebar, under DEVICES.  Click the little triangle next to the shuffle, so that it points down.  You should see the shuffle's "content" indented under the shuffle.
Right-click on the shuffle and select New Playlist.  A new playlist should appear (which you can name), indented under the shuffle.  When you drag songs to the shuffle, instead of dragging them to the "overall" shuffle, drag them to this playlist.  When you select this playlist under the shuffle, on the list to the right, you can drag the songs around to set the playlist order.
NOTE:  If your playlist already appears indented under the shuffle, you don't need to do the above because you have already set up your playlist on your shuffle.
When you use your shuffle, in order to play the songs in playlist order, you need to switch to that playlist.  If you play the songs from the All Songs list (with the shuffle set to play-in-order), I believe they play in alphabetical order.  It switch playlists, you use the VoiceOver button (press and hold).  You can refer to this article for instructions on enabling and using VoiceOver
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4322
The sections Changing playlists and To choose an item from the playlist menu explain how to switch between playlists on the shuffle.  Even if you only have ONE playlist on the shuffle, there is a separate All Songs list.  You must be playing from the playlist to get the songs to play in playlist order.

  • Restoring Second Generation IPOD Shuffle

I just received a new IPOD shuffle and have already managed to screw it up. As soon as I try to sync it to itunes it asks me to restore it because it says it is in a recovery mode. When I try to restore it it fails and gives me a error code of 1429. I'm running Vista OS therefore downloading the reset utility is not an option as it only works with Windows 2000 and XP. I have tried rebooting the computer and also tried various USB ports. None of these have helped. I'm using Itunes version 8.0.2.20 I think this is the latest. Any ideas out there?

u can restore ur ipod with some high time taking methods.. but no other go.. if u have a problem in restoring your ipod.. u need to install a new operating system and itunes in it.. its breath taking and time consuming..
whatever u do u cant able to make it.. by reinstalling ur itunes in the old operating system..
just install a fresh copy and thats up..

  • Ipod Shuffle STRANGE problem

    Hi:
There is something strange with my shuffle, the first time when I bought it apparently it was working fine on my computer, but later when I was trying to add more music, I began to have problems. First, there was an orange flashing light on it and Windows XP not recognize it; even it does not appear on iTunes v4.9 app.
I was reviewing some articles & discussion messages about the problem but Apple's support says "you are trying to connect Ipod Shuffle on a non high-powered USB port", but the question is where can I buy a high-powered USB port for connect on my computer and solve my problem ?.
    Thanks in advance

If you wnat a powered usb port then all you need is a powered usb hub, depends where abouts you are in the world on where to purchase one

  • I just purchased an ipod shuffle (4th gen.) and  I have been working trying to get it running for hours.  I have followed all manuals and tutorial help.  When I pull up my device manager, it shows an Ipod, but won't let me download the Usb driver.

I just purchased and IPod Shuffle (4th gen.) and can't get it running.  I have gone through all of the help available.  It shows up in my device manager, but needs a USB driver.  It will find it online, but says an error has occurred and access is denied instead of installing.  I bought this for a last minute trip with teenagers and I have spent hours on this.  I am running Windows 7 and have tried disabling the firewall.
    Help, please.

  • I have a fourth gen iPod Shuffle and I cannot find anywhere how to manage and view songs on the ipod, in iTunes 11 there is no intuitive way to view the songs at all. I guess Jobs thought, "why would anyone want to do that..lets make it impossible"

I have an ipod shuffle...4th gen.
I use iTunes 11. When ipod is
connected is shows but there is
no intuitive way to view and manage
    songs on the product.
under the icon is only RECENTLY PLAYED and RECENTLY ADDED.
Click on the icon and then select music up top of the app does NOT
show you what is in the ipod but what is stored in itunes.
I am now thinking this was a Steve Jobs joke he played on customers.
Does anyone know a definative way to view and manage songs or
a third party app that permits it.?

I hav the same problem.  When I "Control" click on the small triangle to the left, I do not get an option to pick Music.

  • Mac mini (mid 2010)  - showing iPod Shuffle as startup disc icon?!

    Hey folks,
Here's a curious one... I have a new Mac mini (2.4GHz/2GB/Mid 2010). When I hold down alt at startup to select a startup disc, it shows a 1st gen iPod Shuffle icon as Macintosh HD instead of the standard hard drive icon!
Anyone know if this is likely to be part of a bigger problem (ie. more than just a graphical glitch), and what I might be able to do to sort it out? Have zapped PRAM, repaired disk permissions...
Thanks in advance for any help or guidance!

  • Why is my Ipod shuffle acting strange?

Ever since I put certain songs on my Ipod Shuffle, it has acted strangely with those somgs. For example, when I try to skip one of the songs, it instead goes back to the beginning. The same thing can be said for going back in the song list. Sometimes, after doing it fast enough, it changes the VoiceOver language for no reason from English to a language I can't identify. This is even wierder when the song title is in English. Some of the songs I added are not llayed at all, or when I play a voiceover of one of the songs, then go back to hear the name of it again, it says a different title. This happens only with these songs, which is about 8 sings, but the Ipod only plays 5 or 6, and it says one title one second, and another title the next. Is it the audio files? I have erased all of the music, then re-synced it, but it did not help. This problem is very complicated and strange. Also, this all happens when the songs are in order, as I do not listen to music when it is shuffled.

    Saludos manuelcb2001.

  • How to manage the iPod shuffle manually

I have an I Pod Classic which I registered on the Dell and it is managed through i Tunes which holds my 'library' of songs . I recently bought an IPod shuffle and registered it on the same machine. I missed the opportunity to manage it manually and it loaded the shuffle with a selection of the current library [ it could not load all the songs as it obviously does not have the capacity.]
I want to know how to view what is on the Shuffle and how to edit it manually. The manual I have downloaded , page 17 , gives advice such as :
"In iTunes select iPod shuffle in the list of devices and then click the summary tab. In the Options select 'Manually manage music.'
When in I Tunes I cannot find the list of devices and therefore have no access to the Shuffle libary or how to change it.
    Please offer help.

*What I cannot work out is how to bring up what is already on the Shuffle*
Click on the iPod icon in the source list, this will bring up tabs in the right hand pane that will let you view the content of the iPod and choose how to manage and add music to it. You can read more here: Syncing Music to iPod shuffle
3rd Gen shuffle, like real iPods, now has Music, Audiobooks, Podcasts and
playlists shown under it the left hand pane. ALL the content shows in the
the right side pane when Music is clicked... This is a bit different
from the Contents tab that performed the same function for previous shuffles.
