Strange iTunes behavior w/stranger workaround

Often while streaming a radio webcast through iTunes=>Airport Express, broadcast will be interrupted and reestablished right where it left off, not more than a second or two later. This might happen every few minutes, with no discernible pattern. Sometimes I might go for an hour, or even an afternoon with no interruptions at all.
Here's where it gets curious:
1) Though I listen to several different live streaming broadcasts, this problem only seems to happen with one in particular, at http://radio1190.org, out of the University of Colorado in Boulder.
2) The problem occurs when I am playing iTunes through Airport Express alone. No drop outs when playing through the computer. And, amazingly, no drop outs through Express when I've selected multiple speakers (Express and Computer).
So, I've found a simple way around a rather minor problem that has, nonetheless baffled me.
Can anyone suggest a reason for this bizarre behavior?
Thanks.
PS: I've been dealing with this for quite some time, so it wouldn't be an OS upgrade/update issue.

just to get you up to the latest :
i ran a full Onyx routine, un-installed/AppZapped SMC FanControl, Transmission & other bits & bobs AND most importantly i got rid of a widget i had - CurrencyConverter.. - & while not back to perfection, fact is now my iMac opens it's Dictionary app MUCH faster, the Widgets/Dashboard too & i have a lot less ''beach ball of death'' spinning around in my screen...

  • Very strange iTunes behavior, please help!

Every once in a while, I will notice a song in my library that has a time listed that I know is shorter than the song's actual length (for example, a song I know to be 5 minutes+ will be listed in the library as 1:37). When I play the song, the time adjusts to the proper time, so that is not the problem. However, if I sync my iPod, iTunes will only sync the time listed (1:37 in the example) to the iPod! It seems to be 100% random in the songs it effects and time it changes it to. Please help me out!
Edit: I also forgot to mention, it will make songs longer also, but that is not as much of a problem because it will go on the iPod, show the "longer" time and then just go to the next track once the actual music is over

  • Why doesn't Pr use my CPU's cores while rendering/exporting without strange workarounds?

    Hi,
I'm wondering if anyone can help me understand this. I just finished working on a project that utilized a late 2013 maxed out MacBook Pro, a late 2013 maxed out iMac, and a late 2008 maxed out MacBook Pro all using the latest Mavericks OSX and monitoring with iStat Menus. In each of them, when I rendered or exported a timeline, Pr (and Ae and AME for that matter) would not utilize my CPU's cores until I started opening programs and browsing webpages. And if I stopped doing that, the the CC programs would disengage and the core usage would go down to almost nothing.
This was frustrating to say the least, but I was under a deadline and couldn't see how I could fix it (especially because it happened on three very different computers).
Now that I have time, I still can't figure it out. Has anyone else experienced these issues? They are intensely annoying because when I set a project to render or export, I can't be having to baby the program to do its job.

CPU usage depends on the effects you are using, the bandwidth of your system, and several other factors. When you have a machine with a bunch of fast cores and a bunch of memory the bottle neck that slows things down may become the read write speed of your hard drives.
You can try different memory and processor allocaions in the preferences file. Here are some resources for the optimum settings.

  • Can't add artwork - bizarre iTunes behavior

Okay - this is bizarre - I imported an album into iTunes 9 (downloaded from the Artist's website).  I added the artwork and changed the genre and number of tracks, but these changes only "stuck" to about 4 of the 19 tracks.  No matter what I did, I couldn't add the artwork to the 15 tracks that needed it.  And - interestingly - if I next/previoused through the tracks on the album, all of the values that I changed would revert to the original values the tracks had when they imported.  It was almost as if iTunes couldn't change the ID3 tags in the mp3 files.  (Well, I guess it really couldn't when it came down to it.)
I solved the problem by right-clicking all the tracks and selecting "Create MP3 verssion" - essentially duplicating the MP3 files.  I was then able to successfully get my changes to "stick" to the new files.  (And then I deleted the originals I imported.)
What is this strange strange behavior all about?

There are three common causes for this:
your media are in a format that doesn't accommodate embedded artwork - typically WAV files.  To embed artwork you'll need to convert to another format - Apple Lossless or AIFF if you want to preserve lossless quality, AAC or MP3 otherwise.
your media files are read only - to fix this, use Windows Explorer to find the folder that contains your files, right-click and select Properties.  On the General tab there's a check box labeled "Read-only" - if this is checked, or is grey (sometimes blue), click the box so that the flag is unchecked and the box is white.  Click OK, and then OK again when the "Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files" option selected.  Now try adding the artwork again.
Windows permissions issues are preventing iTunes from updating your media files (there's some anecdotal evidence of a change in this behavior in iTunes 12).  See turingtest2's notes on Repair security permissions for iTunes for Windows for advice on fixing this, then try adding the artwork again.

  • ITunes behavior after downloading version 7.1

After downloading iTunes version 7.1 the behavior o my library changed drastically:
    1) In cover flow, the song order changed from track number (1, 2, 3,...), to alphabetical order;
    2)In cover flow, the albums do not appear in alphabetical order and I cannot understand what the criteria for the order is;
    3) In cover flow mode, each song is shown as a seperate album - they are not grouped any more as one album.

  • HT1657 I rented Heminway's garden of Eden. Film only works for 3 minutes. It is very difficult to find help . I feel  this fraudulent  itunes behavior?

I rented the film Heminways's Garden of Eden. It only works 2 - 3 minutes . My card has been already charged.
Can someone please fw to an official itunes staff ? .
Apple / itunes websites are very difficult to navigate regarding contacting staff for purchases / itunes rentals that dont work.
    This feels like fraudulent behavior.

I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the item that is not playing properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the item, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" link next to the item.

  • ITunes behavior upon Guest account login

I normally use my computer under the Windows XP administrator account. However, I've been advised that this might not always be safe for various reasons. So I logged on using the built-in Guest account. ITunes launched automatically (there was a brief message about it "installing" itself) and scanned both my C and D drives for any and all music files, then it added them to the main library/playlist. The only problem I have with this is that music files on the D drive were copied into the iTunes folder on my C drive. Will I have to go back into the Guest account "version" of iTunes and re-point each duplicated song manually, then delete redundant copies on the C drive?

When I first got XP a few years back, I was given the same advice. I quickly learned that many things don't work right without admin permissions, even things that seemed they should. So I decided it was bad advice, and went back to running the regular way, in my admin account. If you are worried about security, make sure you are running anti-virus and anti-malware programs.
    But anyway...

That would be a lot of work. It would be easier to go into Preferences, repoint the iTunes media folder location to where you want it, run Consolidate, and then clean out what you don't want. If you are planning this, first read the Help item on Consolidate so you understand what it will do.

  • Just plain CRAZY iTunes behavior

This is a request for insight as to what might be going on. I've searched & searched for a solution but don't expect one until Apple provides some sort of library/database repair function.
-> After defragmenting the hard drive with my iTunes folder on it, iTunes thinks that roughly 20% of my music is linked to random files on the startup drive (different from the music folder drive). Crazy random file types are listed in the "Where" section of the "Summary" tab in the song's info. tiff, htm, do, iges, you name it.
And, of course, now iTunes dutifully gives me hundreds of errors (thankfully grouped into one dialog box) every time I synch an iPod, alerting me that it won't copy the odd files to my iPod because the iPod can't play iges and htm files.
I rebuilt the current library from scratch about a month ago and have recently re-imported the whole music folder (by dropping the iTunes music folder from the Finder onto the iTunes application window) to retrieve all the real music files that iTunes miss-linked. This resulted in about 1000 "duplicate" files but at least the music is in there for iPod use. Now I'm going through manually and deleting the miss-linked files after transferring my star ratings. *good times*
-> So there it is. Any ideas as to what's behind this craziness?
-> Any other votes for an Apple iTunes database repair tool?
-> And is there anyone else out there who shuns iPhoto because of what would happen if it's single gigantic photo database has even half the problems that the little iTunes library has?

I notice that too on my Macbook Pro.
I think that is some kind of issue, because I didn't find any option for that.

  • Weird iTunes behavior...

    hi to all !
a while ago i got my Snow Leopard installed & everything seemed pretty good until i started using iTunes : album art i had isn't there anymore & worse ! when you select the whole album -> get info -> drag the album art into it's appropriate case, it won't accept it !? tried selecting song by song -> get info -> drag album art & it won't also. also tried the lower left corner case to add the art ( with either the entire album selected or song by song.. ) & IT JUST WON'T ?? most are O.K. as they where...
another oddity is that in the iTunes music folder, new folders keep popping up usually with the same name but with an underscore in front ( like this : _Winter, Edgar or _Police, etc.. ) & just a couple of albums inside or a couple of songs - picked randomly as far as i can tell...
when i select these songs to play, iTunes plays them as before but....why new folders ?? & where does the underscore come from ? baffling...
any suggestions would be VERY welcome, thanks to all & have a good week-end
    Nuno

Did you update via Software Update or did you download the combo? If you used Software Update, get the Combo updater instead and re-apply:

  • Songs won't continuous play in playlist on itunes, Please Help!!

Just recently when I try to play my music on my computer on itunes it won't continuous play in my playlists. Just one song at a time. I cannot figure it out. Can anyone help? Any suggestions?

The songs in this particular playlist are unchecked because they are all AAC conversions that I load on my nano. For normal iTunes use, I have my songs in 320 kps. mp3s--but the files are too big for the Nano. So I keep this playlist, and uncheck the songs so I don't have duplicates playing in my regular libary. The songs don't play when checked and unchecked are together, but when it's just the complete unchecked song list they play in random order continuously until I stop them manually.
good lord ... i don't believe i've ever seen that reported before. (no real surprise, i guess ... how would people realise that something strange was happening if it was happening to them? that would keep report levels down ...)
can anyone else replicate samdogmom's itunes behavior?

  • Itunes Library .itl file in one folder, music in another Itunes makes no sense!

A while ago I attempted to move one of my libraries to another folder to try to force Itunes to orginise my files in a way that makes sense.   Older versions of itunes apparently used a Music folder and the new one doesn't (or is it the other way around).  So I end up with some files in The Beatles/ItunesMedia/Music/Beatles and other files in Itunes The Beatles/Itunes Mediia/Beatles.
I wanted to force Itunes to re-orginize all of the files under which ever system is newer.  I read up and was happy to find tha Itunes had a command to re-orginize and/or consolidate the files.   BUT carrying out this process turned out to be baffling.   It is very unclear what exactly these commands do and how to use them.
So now I have one folder called The Beatles and another folder called The Beatles ALL.   My .itl file is in The Beatles and all my music is in folders in The Beatles All/
I tried to fix this and saw some really strange behavior.   When I open my Library and play a song, that song is moved to ANOTHER folder next to the Music folder.   So now I have my itl file in one folder, most of my music in another folder, and two songs in this new folder that itunes just created.   I'm guessing that everytime I play a song itunes will move it to the new folder (Why?)
If you don't use separate Libraries please don't ask me why I am using separate Libraries.    I have a LOT of Beatles music that is more of a historical collection and I need to keep it separate from the Library of albums that I actually listen too.
To me itunes behavior is crazy.   Can some one explain it in a way that will make me slap my forehead and say "of course...it makes so much sense!"?   or is it just as bizzare and random as I think?
Another approach that I considered was just creating a new library and importing all of those songs.  But I believe I would lose all of my playlists and I have my beatles collection extensively orginized by playlists.
    Help appreciated.
    Mike

This is an overview of how your library ought to be organized and how you might get it there. I can give specific instructions if you provide more details such as the full locations of the folders you mentioned earlier.
    Make a split library portable
Here are the typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
In the layout above, with the media folder (everything in the red box) inside the library folder, the library is considered to be portable. A portable library can be moved from one path to another without breaking the links between the library and the media, and being self-contained is much easier to backup (You do backup, don't you?).
You can rearrange things to make a split library portable by taking a number of small steps which don't break the library.
Before you start any media files that are outside of the media folder will need to be consolidated (File > Library > Organize Library > Consolidate Files). If the library is in the old style layout then it should be upgraded to iTunes Media Organization (File > Library > Organize Library > Rearrange files in the folder <Media Folder>) to ensure that iPod Games, Mobile Applications etc. are brought inside the media folder.
    The basic non-fatal manipulations are:
You can connect to an alternate set of library files by holding down Shift (Win) or Option (Mac) when starting iTunes.
You can move the library files to a new location as long as the media stays put.
You can move the library files and the media together if the media folder is a direct subfolder of the library folder.
If you have already moved/copied the media content from a subfolder of the library folder to a different location then you only need to copy the library files for it to appear as if you have moved the entire library in the way allowed above. I.e. just copy the library files into the parent folder of the media folder.
You can rename the media folder to iTunes Media (if it isn't already) if the media folder is inside the library folder.
iTunes (prior to iTunes 11) uses the name of the folder holding the library files as the window title. Having made a library "portable" you may need to take a final step of renaming the library folder to iTunes or, if the library files have ended up at the root of a drive, moving all of the library files and content folders into a new folder called iTunes.
After each change you need to open, test and close the relevant library before attempting another change. If a change broke the library, undo it or revert to using the previous set of library files.
In essence all you need to do to make your library portable is copy the library files into the parent folder of the media folder on the external/secondary drive and use the hold-down-shift/option-when-starting-iTunes method to connect to it. Other manipulations may be required to normalize the library so that the library and media folders have standard names.

  • ITunes will not open on first try

For the past several versions, when I try to launch iTunes for the first time after starting/restarting my computer, it simply will not open. The icon will jump up and down in the dock for a while before settling down and saying "Application is not reponding". I have to force quit it and reopen. After I force quit the first time, it opens just fine until I restart my computer again. Not a big issue, but it IS a little annoying. Any thoughts on how to fix this?
    Here's what I'm currently running:
    13" MacBook Pro - 2.66GHz Core 2 Duo
    OSX 10.6.8
    iTunes 10.5.2 (11)
I run a couple apps on start up, but nothing crazy. I haven't tried disabling those, then opening iTunes, but I can't imagine it's one of these (although stranger things have happened I'm sure.) I run Caffine, Quicksilver, SugarSync File Manager, and Day-O on start up.
    Any thoughts or suggestions?
    RickydB

How long after starting the computer do you start iTunes?  I see you're running a number of system hacks and I wonder if they are taking some time loading and somehow interfering.  You could try disabling some and see if it changes iTunes behavior, then decide on your priorities.
A quick way to test would be to hold down the shift key while starting the computer so it boots to Safe Mode.
What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? (Mac OS X) - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564
Safe Boot takes longer than normal startup - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107394
Safe boot mode runs a directory check command similar to that used by Disk Utility's repair.  In Tiger it ignores some stored information (cache) that is normally read that speeds up the boot process, and it moves some caches to the trash.  It also uses only System fonts and disables all Startup Items, third party items, and any Login Items.  Networking and some video components may also be disabled.

  • Video starts OK, then audio drops out -- really weird workaround!

Ever since the last iPod updater, several of my videos pause after 30 seconds, then continue without sound. Exiting the video (pressing menu) and returning gives another 30 seconds of play, then pause and audio dropout. This affects most but not all movies -- I can't find a pattern, because some identical movies (resolution, codex, etc.) have different behaviors.
I tried a reset and a restore. I restored with the latest iPod updater 2006-01-10, but, although all the songs and videos got erased, it didn't seem to return to a previous operating system -- after the restore, a new start on the iPod updater showed the "update" button still greyed out (it this normal?). That would lead me to believe, that the 2006-01-10 update was still in effect.
Anyway, I've discovered a VERY strange workaround. If I wait until the sound drops out and then hold down the rewind or forward key to make the movie skip to another spot, then suddenly the movie plays properly again! Sometimes I need to try this more than once, but eventually it works. The weirdest thing, is that once I've "repaired" the movie in this way, it plays properly even if I exit the movie, watch another movie, and then return to the first -- the "fix" seems to be permanent! How could that be? That implies that something defective, a preference or cache, was written over through this "repair". This sounds like a genuine bug, doesn't it? (Strangely, this "repair" does NOT work when pressing the middle button and "scrolling" to another spot).

How much free space is left on the hard drive?

  • MSI TV Tuner card (stereo) workaround

    HI,
If you live in the US and own the MSI TV tuner card then you know it does not provide Stereo sound.  If you have a digital cable box from your cable tv provider you can recieve stereo sound while viewing and recording when using the MSI TV Tuner card, by doing the following:
    1.  do not use the patch cable for audio from your MSI TV tuner card to your audio sound card.
    2.  connect the audio from your digital cable box to your audio sound card.  My audio sound card is an audigy card.  You may have to spend a couple bucks at FRY's or Best Buy to get any small cable connectors (stereo din connector==>RCA and so forth).  Just look at your box and you should be able to figure out what you need.
    3.  Ofcourse, you will be using the remote for your digital box and leaving the MSI tuner card on channel 3.
But, I have been doing this all the time anyway
    4.  Connect either the composite or s-video cable (not coax) from your MSI TV-tuner card to your digital cable box.  Best to use s-video is possible.

I can bypass the card as well and put a tv and vcr beside my pc (lol).
What we really need is new driver so the card can work better at least with mono sound!
Good point! We can always buy a TV and a capture card. But that's not the product we need!
Why still there are no new drivers or software? Other companies already had their drivers signed by MS WHQL... And what happens here? Nothing! Almost every week I check for new drivers. Even the guys from DScaler have created better support for this card?!? And they don't get paid for that! What's wrong with MSI? Is this card doomed or something? Why should I trust MSI and buy another product of theirs? This just sucks.
?( BTW Have anyone experienced a lack of any sound on several channels in the frequency range between 160 MHz and 210 MHz?
Usually I recommend this card to anyone for its really good picture quality. But how can I explain to them it can't decode sound on the major TV programs in my country (in that specific freq. range).
I have much to say about this card (I have it for more than a half year) but I feel it would be never heard never discussed never answered as my e-mails to MSI.
I'm using a card with CX23881 chip in Bulgaria.
