Strange keyboard issue on a Satellite P300

Hi,
Since a week i have a problem with my keyboard on my P300.
The keyboard doesn't work when the power supply is on. The keyboard is inactive on vista and in the BIOS.
When i cut the power and the PC is on battery the keyboard is OK.
Do you have any infomations about this problem ?
Thanks.
oliv

Hi Oliv
Such issue is not known to me and I think it must be hardware related issue.
What you can do about it? Not much except to try with BIOS update but I dont think it will help.
Satellite P300 is not the newest notebook model. Since when you have noticed such strange keyboard behaviour?
To be honest I think you should contact Toshiba service in your country. Let them check keyboard and keyboard controller using diagnostic tools. They can tell you what the problem is and how to fix it.

  • Strange keyboard issues on Satellite M40

My Toshiba M40 has been giving me keyboard problems quite frequently. I get funny characters like NB¬A
when I press the left Shift key and then the keyboard starts behaving abnormally:
    1. it shifts to caps mode -- to type lower letters, I have to actually use caps lock.
    2. I can't use the shift key to type in the special characters above the numerals.
    3. clicking on the menu bar gives me a different effect as if the shift key is already pressed while it is not.
    4. pressing the right shift key takes me to the 'save' option.
    5. I can't select one file or folder as several of them selected at one time.
And then I give up, shut down the computer (it doesnt restart at this time)
After some time, the computer starts normally but I am never sure when it will start misbehaving again.
I read about bios update, so got mine updated to the 1.7 version from toshiba website (this is the latest one they had for machines with ATI graphics).
sometimes, i use an external keyboard when the problem occurs repeatedly.
would appreciate advice on how to overcome this software / hardware problem.

    Hi Ashok,
It is not easy to say what is causing this strange behaviour, especially since it also occurs with an external keyboard. One clue is that the notebook will not restart after you shut it down unless you leave it for a short while. This would suggest that the unit is overheating and this may well be affecting the unit causing your problems.
I suggest you try giving the notebook a good clean to remove any build up of dust and debris from the CPU heatsink.
    regards,

  • Strange keyboard issues with my 2012 Macbook Air...

    Hey guys,
I've been using my brand new macbook air for the last 2 weeks or so without any issues. Today I took my laptop out of my bag after work and noticed that things on the keyboard have been really weird. For starters, certain keys on the right side of the board are not giving me the correct symbols when I press them. There are a few other random keys (mostly the numbers and symbols) that are incorrect.
ie: I press shift+2 for the @ but I get ' instead or I press ] and get @ instead.
Another weird thing to note: Caps lock turned on = lower case letters and Caps lock turned off = upper case letters.
I left my laptop alone for a few hours and when I came back to it later, whenever I turn it on it automatically boots into safe mode which makes me assume that the shift key is stuck in some weird way.
    What can be causing this?

I have about the exact same problem, my macbook air 13 in (bought january this year in Belgium) is having the same issues, first (i'm on an azerty keyboard - first the following keys stopped working ; . : / and a week a half after that almost the whole keyboard gave up, symptoms
lowercase c reacts like the enter key
    lowercase v types ^V
the whole row of keys from a tot Z don't work or produce garabage like ´^VVVVV1111111111
numerical keys work, but using shift together does not
If I attach an external keyboard, then the same key mismappings or whatever happening here, are also on the external keyboard, so I can't even login with an external keyboard
Sounds like hardware failure, but no idea why, my macbook is in top condition, no spills, no high humidty, really nothing whatsoever
If any one would have a clue prior to bringing it to mac store?
All defaults already done (smc - pram reset), reboot to recovery terminal there same problem with internal and external keyboard, boot from usb etc etc
For me really really really dissappointing, bought the top model macbook air with all upgrades available, as a stable working laptop for business use (for which I payed premium for a premium device) , but stuff like this happens on cheap windows consumer laptops, not on a macbook air
I have about everything over here, 2 Iphones, 3 Ipad's, an Imac, a MacPro, a Macbook Pro, each and every one of the durable and decent devices but this macbook air has been nothing to be excited about untill now, lots of blowing fans all the time, run's quite hot, the touchpad having it's on will
Always been a very loyal Apple customer as the list of Mac devices above shows, but things like this make me reconsider
    Best Regards
    Nico

    Hi
How long does this issue occur?
Did you install any 3rd party applications which could have a bad influence on this OS?
Well, if this issue occurs on a fresh recovered OS so it could be a something wrong with the keyboard.
I don't think that this issue can be solved without any experience. In this case you should contact the service.

  • Satellite P300-1C9 - SD Card reader code 10

    Hi All,
I have a new Toshiba P300-1C9, well six months old, and have just for the first time tried an SD card in the digital media card slot.
The card is not showing in "my computer". In device manager it is showing with the yellow fault sign warning of a problem.
Double clicking it gives this message "This device cannot start code 10" In Disc Management the card is not listed in the upper pane but is showing as a drive in the lower pane without a drive letter being assigned.
If I try to assign a drive letter I get a message saying the operation failed to complete because the Disc Management console view is not up to date.
It requests refreshing the view using the refresh task. That does nothing.
I have reinstalled the drivers for the SD Card listed under disk drives when the card is in, for the storage Controllers and the Generic volume listed under Storage volumes. Also I have updated the driver for SD host adaptors.
A card format has made no difference. I know the card reader is okay as a few days ago I took an up to date image with Acronis TI and then reinstalled the OS from the recovery media. The card worked fine then. I've now put the Acronis image back and the card isn't working. I've had loads of driver updates along the way from Toshiba for various things (but not the media card reader) via their Tempro service including a bios update.
I am wondering if the bios update caused the problem. I am debating whether to put the bios back to the default setting.
I have tried everything I can think of, and followed a number of suggestions after googling the problem. The MS Knowledge Base wasn't very helpful and a lot of people seem to have the same problem. I am now at a complete loss.
    Thanks,
    cheven
Any ideas would be most welcome.
    Thanks.

    Hi
Generally the Error code 10 means that the device cannot start.
Your card reader is not ready and does not run and therefore the SD card cannot be used and is not recognized in My Computer.
In most cases the driver update/reinstallation should help to sort put this issue.
The Satellite P300-1C9 belongs to the PSPCCE series.
The Toshiba European driver page provides the Card Reader Controller driver for this notebook model. This is the driver which controls the SD card slot.
I recommend downloading this driver. Then access the device manager and uninstall the previous installed driver. Then reboot the notebook.
After new reboot the OS should search for a new device and should ask for the necessary driver.
Then you should point to the driver which you have downloaded and should finish the installation.
Usually this should solve your problem.

  • Strange issue with "Enter" key in Vista on Satellite P300-225

A few weeks ago, I don't recall exactly when, Windows Vista on my Satellite P300-225 started to pass an incorrect scancode to applications when the Enter key is pressed. It always sends the scancode of the Keypad Enter key, even when I hit the one in the alphanumeric part of the keyboard. It did work correctly some time ago, but suddenly, it just started acting like this. No remapping of any keys.
Since there are quite a few programs that act different on these two keys, this has become quite an annoying issue.
The strangest part of it is, that the problem seems to be somehow related to Windows Vista, since the keys are correctly reported on Linux.
If anybody has a clue, please, let me know.

Yes, it almost certainly is a keymapping issue related to Vista. Reinstalling Vista isn't a way to go, it's not worth the effort (the recovery DVDs would comletely wipe out everything from my harddisk so I'd have to move all my data away and then restore, reinstall Linux et cetera). I'll give a try to uninstalling the keyboard in safe mode though.
Anyway, it almost looks like some Windows update is responsible for this, since I have automatic updates enabled and it installs something everytime I boot it. I don't know about any program I installed before this happend that could possibly alter the mappings. (...and the registry key used for this is empty.)

  • Satellite P300-05x - keyboard is loose up the top right

    Hi
i have a new Satellite P300-05x and the keyboard is loose up the top right side mainly between buttons 5 and the backspace button say.
It is very anoying and it clicks/ makes noises as it moves up and down when i type..
I'm sure its nothing to worry about but very anoying with a new laptop
Has anyone experianced this and is it a simple fix?
    Thanks
    Dave

    Hi,
I agree with Jack Black. I never noticed such an issue on my Toshiba notebooks.
But in my opinion this is not normal and so you should go to an authorized service provider. They can check your notebook and exchange the keyboard if its necessary.
Here you can search for an ASP:

  • Satellite P300-1FY - BSOD due video driver issue

    Hi,
I've bought this laptop a good month ago to replace my old one that had crashed beyond repair and I've been having problems with the video drivers ever since. I initially hoped the problem would solve itself since I am in the middle of my exams and I really don't have time too much extra time to spend on mending it myself, and I also can't give it back to the store since I need certain software for my exams.
So the problem I think lies with the video drivers for the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470 graphic card. Whilst I am working on my laptop my screen all of a sudden turns black and my computer freezes (including very unpleasant sound when I'm playing music at the time) an after 5 seconds it flashes back into live and displays a message saying a beelschermstuurprogramma werkte niet perfect en is nu herstela. In English this would be something like s video drivers were not functioning correctly and have now been repaired.
This is of course hugely irritating but it became even more so a couple of weeks ago when I first got a blue screen because of a similar error. Leading me to lose half a hour of work on my laptop. (and as anyone who has ever had exams knows, half an hour is not something you can always afford to lose) I ran the wizard and it sent me to the ATI website to look for drivers.
The inconvenience is that I've been able to find a lot of drivers, but none for the 3400 series. After searching internet for a while I finally found some drivers for these series (or they claimed to be), however this installer was corrupt. I also searched the Toshiba website but I didn't find what I was looking for.
The laptop also freezes from time to time without the screen turning all black.
Could someone help me with this issue?
    Louis-Philippe
P.S.: quality of the keyboard is really bad too

First of all you should post the exact BSOD code and what OS do you use. Then we can search on the Microsoft Knowledge Base for this issue and what is the reason for this.
So please post the BSOD code.
Furthermore I dont understand why you cant find a driver on the Toshiba website. The Satellite P300-1FY belongs to the PSPCCE series and therefore I can find a display driver for XP and Vista. So where is the problem? Maybe you should try to install this driver:
    http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com => Support & Downloads => Download Drivers
But before you install the driver, remove the old driver first. Restart the notebook and clean your system with CCleaner. Restart the notebook again and then install the newest version from the Toshiba website.
The display driver on the manufactures website (ATI) doesnt work because its only for desktop cards and not for notebooks. So you cant install it and your notebook is only tested with the Toshiba drivers.
If the new driver doesnt work you should try to update the BIOS too. You can find on the Toshiba page.
    Good luck!!

  • Satellite P300 - Keyboard layout changed

Well, I am running a Toshiba Satellite P300 and I am having problem.
I just got it back from repair and they changed the motherboard. I have updated the BIOS. I did a fresh OS install to Windows 7 that. I didn't have this problem before it went out for repair but now when I press the Num Lock key, it changes my number pad to numbers, as expected, but also changes the right side of my keyboard to numbers as well which is very frustrating.
I have been surfing for 2 days online to find a solution to it and even called the tech that was in charge of the repair and no one has any answers for me.
And another problem after repair : without Model Name ,Part Nr and Serial Nr

So far it looks like W7 has the correct driver and the external keyboard has its key presses correctly processed.
    Next?
When you press num lock on the external keyboard does it also toggle the alpha keys on the keyboard to numerics? - Trying to establish if the key code from the external k/b is the same as that generated by num lock on the laptop. Your laptop is behaving as if it is a laptop with no numeric key pad and you can toggle between "numbers or text". I've had a search and can find no "shortcut" keystrokes to do that - I also searched to see if a "Shift Lock" could be emulated since that is a key that has disappeared from modern keyboards.
I presume you have checked that your BIOS is the current version. The only other suggestion I've got is that the replacement m/b has not had Toshiba "lock outs" applied and it is in a generic bios state and you can access settings such as the number of keys on the keyboard or legacy keyboard support. Suggest you identify some "small" Toshiba laptops with no numeric keypad and download their manuals to see how they handle no numeric keypad or just ring Toshiba and ask them?
    Message was edited by: peterk_1
With your laptop num lock on when you hold "Fn" and press one of the remapped keys do you get a letter? (add the shift key and get a capital) if so it's behaving like a Satellite L450D-11X (fn+f11 is the numeric toggle on that machine)

  • Satellite P300-1AN - Touchpad issue with AC adapter

I've a Satellite P300-1AN notebook and since the beginning (two weeks)
I have a touchpad issue: it is not immediately responsive and the pointer trembles when touching the pad. Very often it freezes for just one or two seconds.
This is VERY annoying. A USB mouse works perfectly.
I tried reinstalling ALPS drivers, tried Synaptics ones, tried just Windows Vista drivers: no way.
Now I have found the reason: this issue is present only when the notebook is powered by AC adapter.
With battery the touchpad is perfect.
I contacted Toshiba Service and thay said that they won't change the AC adapter if I don't try before a complete system restore!
Isn't it simpler just try with a new adapter and only then, if the problem persists, try more drastic procedures?
Has anyone had this same issue?

    > I contacted Toshiba Service and thay said that they won't change the AC adapter if I don't try before a complete system restore! Isn't it simpler just try with a new adapter and only then, if the problem persists, try more drastic procedures?
The point is that your notebook should be always checked using the Toshiba factory configuration.
Why? Because the ASP wants to be sure that this issue is not related to a software problem (compatibility issue with 3rd party applications). The software issues are not covered by warranty.
Furthermore the ASP will always recover the notebook before checking any hardware parts for a malfunction. Therefore you should always backup your data from the HDD before you will send the notebook for checking.
I would recommend to reinstall the OS using the Toshiba recover disk and then check if the issue would appears.
If yes then you can contact the ASP again and could provide all details which are necessary for an technician.
    Bye

  • Satellite P300 - is there a backlight for the keyboard?

Hi - does anyone know if the Satellite P300 has a back light for the keyboard? I am assuming it does as the keys are shiny black but cannot for the life of me figure out how to turn it on. Any assistance is appreciated.

As far as I know illuminated keyboard will be offered with new notebook series A500 and P500.
I am 100% sure Satellite P300 has not such keyboard.
You can check specifications for different Satellite /Satellite pro P300 models and you will see that nowhere is mentioned such keyboard.

  • Satellite P300 - One Key not working on keyboard

    Hi all,
Does anyone have a suggested solution to fix a key not working on my laptop? One letter on my keyboard "the letter b" has stopped working.
    Laptop is Satellite P300- "PSPCA-01U013"
    Thanks :)

    Hi Ricco1,
The problem is that single keys cant be replaced so if a certain key doesnt work its time to replace the whole keyboard but dont worry, new keyboards are not so expensive. Just get in contact with an authorized service provider and ask for a new keyboard, the guys are able to order a new one and they can replace it for you if cant do this yourself.
Here you can find a list of all ASPs:

    Hi All,
    i have a Satellite P300,
I am having trouble when i type.
When i am typing using the keyboard, the first couple of words are ok, but then the words start typing in the wrong place, eg back further into the middle of the sentence i am typing.
    Anybody please help? thanks

    Hi dude
    I had a similar issue.
While typing the cursor jumped to different positions and I was not able to finish one sentence.
I though there could be something wrong with the keyboard but finally I have notices that I have touched the touchpad surface accidentally while typing ?.
I have disabled the touchpad using the Fn+F9 and the issues has gone
So maybe its the same reason for you

  • Re: Sometimes my Satellite P300 forgets to load video driver

My laptop (Satellite P300) sometimes "forgets" at startup to load the videodriver.
So the resolution is default in the startup screen of Windows.
Doesn't matter which Windows version I have and all the drivers are up-to-date.
When I restart mostly the problem is solved....

Indeed, its very strange issue but I think it should be possible to solve this driver problem by driver reinstallation even if the driver is already up to date.
I would recommend you to uninstall the GPU driver from device manager.
Reboot the unit and clean the system using 3rd party software called CCLeaner.
Then install the GPU driver again.
The package should be available on the Toshiba EU driver page.
    Good luck
