Strange limitations streaming photos

Hi gang,
The new Apple TV has some serious limitations compared to the previous version when streaming photos. I used to have iTunes sync up photo albums to the Apple TV, and could pack in as many photos as the hard drive could handle. I understand that the new Apple TV streams in the photos, which is fine, except that it seems to have limits on the streaming functionality.
My iPhoto collection has over 40,000 photos. I have a Smart Album called "Best of the last 12 months". It has 1399 photos, and all appear on the Apple TV when selected. I have a Smart Album called "5 star photos", which has photos dating back many years. In iPhoto there are 1,326 photos, however, the Apple TV reports only 202. The older the photo, the less likely it is to appear on the Apple TV.
I tried to get around this by uploading all of my 5 star photos to Mobile Me, but there is a cap of 500 photos per album for Mobile Me.
Grrrrrr.
Is there not a way to get the Apple TV to stream photos more reliably than this?
Cheers!

i also use iPhoto.
what i did was, in itunes. under the advanced tab at the top of the screen. it has an option to choose photos to share.
in the popup box i picked selected albums and events and kept the total under 20k, clicked apply.
by no means a permeant fix as clearly not all of my photos are going to apple tv, but i don't have the gaps.
hope this helps

  • Photo Stream photo syncing on iPad?

I just bought a new iPad, and the Photos app only shows a fraction of my Photo Stream photos. (My Mac's iPhoto app and my iPhone both show more than 700; the iPad shows just a couple dozen of the most recent.) Any idea what's going on? I'd appreciate your help! Thanks.

    Hi astapple,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
To start with troubleshooting this issue where your Photo Stream is not appearing on your iPad, please follow the steps below.
I don't see photos from My Photo Stream on my iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
From the Home screen, tap Settings > Wi-Fi.
Make sure that Wi-Fi is on and your device is connected to a wireless network. You can use these steps to troubleshoot your Internet connection on your iOS device.
From your Home screen, tap Settings > iCloud > Photos.
Make sure that My Photo Stream is on. If it’s already on, turn it off and tap Delete. After it turns off, turn My Photo Stream on again.
Close the Camera app on the device that took the photo. Photos won't upload from an iOS device to the Recently Added album (or the My Photo Stream album in iOS 7) until you close the Camera app.
See if your iOS device is below 20% battery power. To preserve battery life, downloads and uploads from My Photo Stream are disabled when the battery reaches 20%. Downloads and uploads will continue after you charge your device, and the battery charge is greater than 20%.
Due to storage limitations, your Apple TV might display only your most recent photos.

  • Streaming photo's from synced library

Okay, can someone confirm this. I can set up TV to sync or stream all my iTunes content, except for my photo's. It seem that photo's can't be streamed, only synced. The only way to stream photo's is to set up TV to stream all content only.

You can stream and sync photos at the same time, the only limitation is that you us the same list to do both and hence you stream and sync exactly the same photos, the benefit is that when you are in your "my itunes library" (ie you are streaming other content) you don't need to switch to your "tv library" (your synced content) just to see your photos.
This is exactly how mine works.

  • Streaming photos is a MUST HAVE for SW Version 1.1

The Apple TV I just installed is a thing of beauty in its ease of setup and use.
But as of now, I have found one gaping hole in its capabilities: It can't STREAM photos.
This means that, while you can view movies and listen to music from six computers, you can only view photos from one. Viewing photos requires SYNCing a photo library on a PC or Mac --i.e., copying them over to the A-TV's hard drive.
In our house, this means that we miss out on the photos of two active photographers, my wife and my son (since I set A-TV to sync with my Mac).
I can't see why this could not be a fix Apple can give us in A-TV software version 1.1. At the very least for us Mac users who store our photos in iPhoto albums.
Tivo has allowed accesss through its Home Media Option to photo libraries on a number of computers on a network for several years now --albeit less elegantly than the presentation through Apple TV.

I just re-read Walter Mossberg's review of the Apple TV in the Wall Street Journal and his understanding is that this limitation of not being able to stream photos is going to get fixed by Apple:
"The only downside of streaming as compared to syncing is that you can't stream photos. These can appear only through synchronization. Apple plans to enable photo streaming later."

I assume Mossberg has an inside track to Apple on this, so I am encouraged.

  • Stream Photos to ATV without slideshow??

    Hi -
Sorry if this is answered elsewhere, but I couldn't find it.
Can I stream photos from iTunes to ATV without using the slideshow?
I'd like to either browse my photo library (like in ituens or my touch) or at least 'next' and 'previous' at will with my remote (ATV remote or touch Remote app - either is fine).
    Can this be done?
    THANKS!

OK - there is some strangeness now.
It seems that if you chose to "sync", then you can still stream from iTunes everything except Photos.
    That's how it should work
When setup for "sync" you cannot access photos, and everything else is based on playlists, and what is checked within iTunes. Photos must be synced to the ATV.
You can access photos, sure you're looking in my photos not shared photos.
It's not all just playlist based, you can choose specific movies, tv shows etc and choose music by artist etc.
When setup for "stream" you can access anything in iTunes, whether it is checked or not. For example, I have about 700 podcasts, and I can get them all when streaming, but only the checked ones when set on sync.
Again that's how it's supposed to work, syncing gives you far more control than streaming.

  • Lost Photo Stream Photos after signing out of iCloud

For some reason I've lost all of my Photo Stream photos except for 48 of them.
I changed my Apple ID a couple days ago, and finally got around to signing out of iCloud on my iPhone / iPad to refresh my account as it tells you to in the FAQ somewhere on this site. I checked and all of my Photo Stream pictures were available, then I made sure I backed up everything on iCloud from both devices, then signed out on both my iPhone 6 and iPad mini. I signed back in, and it started to load my Photo Stream but only loaded 48 photos. I'd like to get them all back but I'm not sure how.
They're still all in my phone's Camera Roll, but not in my Photo Stream which means I can't access them from other devices. Is there any way to get them back onto my Photo Stream?

Hi you have basicly 2 Options.
1 -if you Switch One fotostream on all 3 devices of yours which are working on the same apple id -all Fotos you Take with your iPad will be synchronized via icloud to the other 2 decvices ( w-lan and battery depending).
2- If you select foots or a whole album in iPhoto on your air or iMac and choose than puplish --> fotostream --> new or existing event you can key in a friends mail. If this friend has iCloud and iPhoto ( for iMac or MacBook ) and click on the link in the email it will download this fotos in the fotostream section in iPhoto. If he has a iPad, iPhone,... It will do it in the foto app and if he doesn't have a iCloud account at all and you choose "public web site" while publishing he can see your fotostream on a website.

I am grateful for any advice.

A hard drive if it has failed will sometimes allow you to boot into windows but may not work completely (Eg: In a scenario, where system partition ;where windows is installed works fine but logical partition of hard drive has gone bad).
On certain conditions, if the hard drive is on verge of failure may/may not respond completely. I would suggest you to run a diagnostics using Seagate Seatools which works on any hard drive irrespective of manufacturer to actually confirm if your hard drive has failed.
Also, any hard drive can fail in spite of it been 1yr old or 1day old as its all manufactured in bulk and most of it comes from China

  • How can I stream photos to 2 of 4 devices, have same apple ID?

Hi, my wife and I both have a IPhone and IPad. We use the same apple account for purchases. But I don't want to stream photos on all devices.  Is there a way to stream photos from my phone to my iPad but not to my wife's and then have her devices share here photos? Thanks in advance for the help.

You need to keep the same ID as you both have now for the iTunes store but you need to delete the iCloud account for one of you on both the iPhone and the iPad (settings > iCloud, scroll down and select delete account). You then need to create a new iCloud account (settings >iCloud).
Before deleting iCloud accounts, consider that iCloud syncs calendars, email, notes, reminders and contacts, you won't delete any of that information from iCloud by deleting the account you will however delete it from the phone/iPad unless you turn each service off one by one before deleting the account, if you do this you will be offered the opportunity to keep the data on the device.
When you create your new iCloud account you will be offered the opportunity to merge data (if you have have previously elected to keep it on your device).
Hope that makes sense, my battery ran out just before I finished typing and I've had to type it all again - sometimes you rush things the second time around.

  • TS3989 I have photo stream setup on iPhoto on my macbook pro and I just got 2 iPhones for my family and only one streams photos to iCloud photo stream.  Both iPhones have the same Apple ID and have Photo Stream turned on.  Shouldn't both iPhones stream ph

I have photo stream setup on iPhoto on my MacBook Pro and on 2 new iPhones that have the same AppleID as the MacBook Pro.  However only one iPhone will stream photos to iPhoto on the MacBook Pro.  All these devices were purchased in the last 2 weeks.  What setting is wrong?

Photostream only syncs photos over Wi-Fi, make sure you are connected to Wi-Fi to begin with.
Photostream only syncs when the camera app is closed, ensure it is closed.
Photostream only syncs when the battery is above 20%, try recharging the device
Try disabling photo stream on your device (settings > iCloud), restarting your device and then re-enabling photo stream.
If this doesn't help you may need to reset photo stream. You can do this at icloud.com by clicking on your name in the top right corner and then the advanced settings in the pop-up dialogue box that appears.
Note: disabling photostream and re-enabling it will result in any photos that are currently in the photostream album on your device, that are older than 30 days old, not being added back.

  • How can I retrieve old Photo Stream photos from a lost iPhoto Library?

My laptop was stolen and with it an external drive that had my iPhoto library.  I had an old backup and when I opened the backup and turned on Photo Stream, I saw all my old photos appear again!  After a short while, it was removing old photos from the photostream and replacing them with newer ones.  I'm now missing months of Photo Stream photos that I really want back.  I tried creating a new library and enabling Photo Stream to try to capture those missing images, but I am not able to see anything older than Oct.  I could really use some help if somebody knows a way to get those memories back...
    Thanks
    -Rob

    I had an old backup
What kind of backup? Do you have a Time Machine Backup of your complete system from the time before the laptop was stolen?
To restore the Photo Stream images from that time you need to restore the folder
    your home folder /Library/Application Support/iLifeAssetManagement/Assets
This folder contains the PhotoStream pictures that were part of the PhotoStream at that time.
To restore this folder from TimeMachine, open a Finder window showing this folder, make it the active window, and then enter TimeMachine. Go back in time in the TimeTunnel, till you see the correct date. Don't restore to the library but to a folder on the Desktop.

  • I have 2 iCloud accounts. 3 devices use one of them as a primary account; my iPhone uses the other as a primary account so I can't stream photos from iPhone etc. What to do?

I have 2 iCloud accounts. 3 devices use one of them as a primary account; my iPhone uses the other as a primary account so I can't stream photos from iPhone etc. What to do?

Sorry, yes indeed you can do that, I thought you wanted to keep the accounts the way they are now and also share photo stream between all devices, which of course is not possible.
In order to login to the account you are currently logged in to as a secondary account, as a primary account, and vice versa, you will need to delete both accounts from that device and then log back into them with the correct account as a primary (settings > iCloud) and the correct account as a secondary (settings > mail, contacts, calendars).

  • How can you restore photo stream photos back to Apple TV after accidentally deleting from your iPad

After accidentally deleting photo stream  photos on my iPad, this deleted photo stream photos on my Apple TV.  How can I restore these photos back to my Apple TV and also to  my iPad?  Suggestions welcomed

If you have a backup of your iPad prior to the date of deleting your photos, you can find them. Otherwise, you might be able to find them.
If you do have this backup, then you'll have to restore your iPad to that point.
If you had a Mac with iPhoto, then when you connected your iPad, iPhoto would store the photos separately from Photostream.
I despise Photostream. It's turned off everywhere on my system. It is one of the most useless pieces of junk that Apple has foisted on my Mac and iOS. But hey, that's just my opinion.

  • Stream photos in the same itunes library used to syinc.
