Strange line around part of a clipping path

I am working on a logo for a client and put a clipping path around a group of vector objects that are all black and white. Basically I did it just to create staright edges around some stuff that I may need to adjust later. For some reason, at the bottom it is creating a thin black line all the way around the path. There is no stroke on it, looked at in outlines and there is nothing there, but it definitly showing when I am in previem mode. If I put a white box over it the priblem is solved, but I would like to know why it is there in the first place.
The inserted image will show what I am talking about, you can see the area on the left that drops down from black line. It actually continues down, makes and then goes around the rest of the logo to the right and then ends at the same spot on the right. Any ideas on what I am seeing here?

Thanks for getting back to me Kurt. Using CS5, it doesnt print, and you were right if I turn off anti aliasing it goes away although then my text looks like bad. Do you know if there is a way to turn off anti aliasing for just one object? If not no worries, I can manage one way or the other but it would be nice to know.
I do have to say it is really strange though. This logo is still in the concept stage, I just sent off the proof actually. Anyways, there are two other clipping paths in the same file and they dont have the same issue.
Thanks again for the help.

  • Selection line around parts of graphic

    Hi all,
I've imported a graphic into an Indesign document by copying from illustrator and pasting into indesign. The graphic shows up properly, and as far as I know exports to pdf properly, however in Indesign normal screen mode parts of the graphic show a coloured outline (the colour of the indesign layer), even though it isn't selected. If I switch to preview, bleed or slug mode the outline disappears.
Does this indicate something? Should I worry about it?
    Many thanks,
    K.

    Hi John,
The graphic is entirely vector, I didn't make it - it came to me from another designer - but I think it was made by simply typing the words, converting to outline and tweaking a bit (is it the ubiquitous Zapfino?).
It seems to be just the t and a that show their edges.
I've checked and changed path directions for the errant elements and it makes no difference.
It's probably something really simple - I've only been using InDesign for a few days.

  • Strange lines and parts of characters missing in the text and freezing iss

Recently our emac has been displaying squiggles or dashes randomly on the pages and sometimes parts of the letters are missing. We have also been recently having issues with the emac freezing while using Safari and itunes. I have checked on the Repair List and our mac has a serial # that falls into the effected models. Could these problems be related to that? I have been having a hard time finding my receipt and warranty info. I know we bought the extended warranty but I can't remember for how long. We purchased it in late 2005, early 2006. I don't really want to haul it into the retailer if these problems are related. Any help would be appreciated....Thanks

Yes, it does sound as though your eMac has been affected by the infamous "bad capacitor" issues. A way to check if it is without going to the Apple Store is to power the eMac off, and open up the RAM access slot. If you see the capacitors bulging, then you can go get your logic board replaced for free, and that will fix the issues.
A picture of a bulging capacitor in my eMac (which has since been fixed):

    And here's what that did:

There have been some reports of people putting in new capacitors by themselves, but taking it to the Apple Store is probably a better idea. First of all, it doesn't void the warranty. Second of all, it's free. And a lot easier.

  • Automated Clipping Paths

We have over 150 images of small mechanical parts that need clipping paths. Is there any way to automate the process? Are there any Plug Ins out there?? The plan is to use the Magic Wand to select the background and invert to create the clipping path.
Just wondering if anyone knows of a better way to fly thru 150+ images using batch processing or automation?????

To see clippin gpath options you'd need to have the image frame or the image selected, but from your desription I don't think you really want to use a clipping path (where your options are to detect edges, use a Photoshop path, or an alpha channel).
Instead, draw the rectangle you want to use to clip the oval frame and positionit as you want it, then move it behind the oval and select both. Open the Pathfinder panel and click the Intersect button.
Or for more flexibilty cut the oval frame and "Paste Into" the rectangle and you can move it around to change the masking any way you like.

  • Help!!  White line around image with placed in Illustrator from Photoshop, possible CMYK issue?

I have a CMYK file, outlined product, that looks perfect in Photoshop.  When I place the image into Illustrator, it shows up with a thin white line around parts of the product (fyi - it shows up on a print as well). I have tried to place an RGB file and it does not have the white line around the product.    I assume it has something to do with it being CMYK, but I'm at a loss on how to fix this.  I'm desperate for any help.

Okay, please refer this image and change the option within Ai General preferences. Uncheck the option Anti-Aliased artwork.

  • Strange lines appearing behind itunes

I went away for the holidays, and when I got back I booted up my 2006 iMac. Today for the first time, there are strange lines appearing behind iTunes whenever it is open but not the active window. I tried quitting and restarting iTunes, but the lines come back. I wish I could upload a screen shot of what this looks like on my desktop, it's very weird. It does not happen behind any other program window. Only iTunes. The lines appear as if they are extensions of the iTunes window formatting, in line with the side bars, etc. Has anyone else experienced this? Any tips for getting it to quit?

I just wanted to add that I am also seeing the same problem: strange lines around the borders of the iTunes window. The most obvious ones are a set of four vertical lines running parallel to both sides of the iTunes window, although there are other strange bits as well, mostly around the top corners of the window, as well as a single thin horizontal line above the top of the iTunes window. These unusual lines started appearing "out of the blue" sometime in the past few weeks -- as in, not right after an update or any other configuration change to my mac... The only change I can say I did recently was to update to OS 10.6.6, although I know others who are running 10.6.6 and aren't having this issue with iTunes. I also wanted to add that in my case, I only see these strange lines when iTunes is the active window. Further to that, updating to iTunes 10.1.2 does not fix the problem, unfortunately.

  • EPS photos with Clipping paths dont show in Quark Xpress

Anyone experience why a Photoshop file with a clipping path will not preview when brought into Quark Xpress unless I save the preview as a tiff?
    I use photoshop 7.1.

From desktopublishing.com's review of QuarkXpress 4
"The ability to control a picture's appearance in several areas. For example if you want to make a specific part of an image transparent, simply specifying the part using the clipping paths, the alpha channel that is embedded in the original picture, or the white area of the image. It can also read clipping paths in either TIFF or EPS format. Trapping tools and supports most popular color spaces, including Hexachrome, are also included."
and according to Wikipedia, Xpress 4 was released in 1997, eleven years ago with 4.1 coming two years later.
So, while I was just guessing thinking back over the last decade of versions, I was not far off, and I can't remember ever having a clipping path problem with tiffsthat version. Of course, if you didh't save the clipping path as a Clipping Path in Ps, then you would have a problem. That has been fixed now too.

  • How do I make a clipping path around a feather or hair?

  • I recently upgraded to 0S 10.6.8 on mab pro and now have pink lines around the desktop borders. A horrible red colour appears in the background of the screen saver, and in parts of Safari and other applications including MS Office. please help

I recently upgraded my Macbook Pro to SL OS 10.6.8 and now have pink lines around the desktop borders and some menus. There is also a horrible red colour that appears in the background of photobooth and parts of Safari. The screen saver looks like an alien life form with red in the background. There are odd translucent colours in the background of other applications including MS Office. It looks like a horrible psychedilic trip from the 60's. I ran the upgrade again but nothing changed. Can you help?

Backup your files off the computer (not TimeMachine) and disconnect.
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk, under the Utilities menu > Disk Utiltiy > Repair Disk, and Repair Permissions
(quit and stop if Disk Repair (only) issues a failure and notify us)
Quit and install 10.6 again, reboot and Software Update again,  this time download it and then run it. Check Software Update until clear.
c boot off the 10.6 disk and use Disk Utility >Repair Disk again (fixes a bug)
Reboot and check any installed programs, some may not function who have installed kext files into OS X, those need to be reinstalled.
You didn't mention if you upgraded from 10.5 or 10.6.7, the above steps are for fixing a 10.6 to 10.6.8
If you upgraded from 10.5, you should erase the drive in Disk Utility first, then install 10.6 fresh, but then all your programs will have to be reinstalled or updated from original sources.
Also the 10.6.3 upgrade disk has no free iLife, but you can install 10.5 fresh then upgrade to 10.6.3, then to 10.6.8 and then all new programs and that will give free iLife that came on the factory 10.5 disks.
You also can use Pacifist to extract iLife from 10.5 disks.

  • Bizarre lines around windows; strange screen problems

My Macbook has been acting strange lately. I'm attaching a few images so you can see what's happening with my display. Sometimes, after I exit a program and return to the desktop, I get strange patches of white/gray boxes on the screen. Logging off and back in clears the boxes. Now I have vertical lines around all my open windows.
    Any ideas?

That doesn't sound good. Run the hardware test that came with your computer:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303081
If nothing appears there, do you have any software that modifies the operating system that you aren't sure has been tested with the operating system release you have? When specs call for 10.5.x and higher, they do not mean 10.6.0, 10.6.1, or 10.5.2 through 10.5.8.

  • Suggested New Feature to Photoshop Clipping Path Lines

I've been using Photoshop for 20 years, and now that I'm 51 yrs old I have an increasingly hard time seeing the thin clipping path line if it is on a dark texture.  Yes, I have had my eyes checked very recently, and yes, I do need eyeglasses when working on the computer now.  I would like to suggest that Adobe consider adding a feature that allows a user to choose line weight and color.  It would really be helpful.  Age has certainly taken it's toll on my eyes (and my hair)!  Does anyone else have my same issue?

Clipping Path or are you referring to the Pen Option ruber Band?

  • Strange lines appear around transparent PNG's when document PDF'ed

    Hi
I have inserted some transparent PNG images into my Pages document, and they look fine on my screen, and they also look fine when I export to PDF and view in Preview.
However, if I view the PDF in Acrobat (or send it to a Non-Mac user and they view it in Acrobat), there are thin lines around many of the PNG images, which make them look ugly and sloppy, and very un-Mac-Like! Any ideas why these lines are appearing and how to prevent them?

    Hi logree
    Welcome to the forum.
My guess is that it is showing just the edge of the masked background used to hide the alpha channel background of the .png.
This happens I think, because the postscript mask may be centred on the outside rows of pixels in Acrobat, with half the pixels still being revealed.
You can try masking in Pages' instead:
    +Menu > Format > Instant Alpha+
or try a Photoshop file with transparent background, to see if that eliminates the problem.

  • Thin white line around image

Using CS3 with Vista.  I have a postcard that has a background image on the bottom layer, another (overlapping) image in the next layer, and type on the top layer.  The image on the middle layer is showing very minor white edges (stitching (?) I guess) around parts of it.  It also printed with this same slight, white jagged edge.  This middle image has an effective resolution of 300 ppi.  I read in Knowledgebase about turning off anti-aliasing but when I do it still shows this white edge on screen and the type seems to marginally get slightly jagged.  It was so minor that the client was fine with it but I am curious as to what was causing it and if it's something I can remedy in the future.
Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.
    Gordon

Gordon has sent me his original files, and there are a couple of issues.
The first is with the background image, a 400 x 400 pixel jpeg that's been stretched to fit the rectangular sahpe, and then made 50% opaque. The effective resolution is 97 x 60 ppi, which as a ghosted background is probably marginally usable, particularly if printed on digital equipment, but is hardly optimal. I'd personally do the opacity reduction in Photoshop and save a new flattened version as a .psd for use in a background because it reduces the complexity of the file, but there's no rule that says one must do things that way. I simply prefer to use transparency only when it is required to achieve the effect.
The larger issue is with the middle image, which is a transparent .gif of a glass with a margarita. This is 1238 x 1667 pixels and has an effective resolution of 349 ppi, more than adequate for print, but it looks to me as if it was up-sampled at some point from a web image (not unlikely since it's a .gif) as the image is made of obvious square blocks that look like the original index color pixels -- a classic example of why you can't simply take a small image and upsample for print. Around the stem of the glass are a large number of white pixels left behind when the image was removed from its original background, which are showing as the faint white lines he described. These pixels could be removed using a detect edges clipping path in ID, but doing so leaves a very jagged edge. A drawn path in Photoshop is much cleaner, but the pixels in the rest of the image are still readily apparent and the image probably isn't really worth the effort to repair if a better quality can be found to begin with.

  • At open, illustrator puts clipping path on images and slices it up HELP!

I am still using CS2, but this same problem has happened when I open a legacy (older version) file in CS4.....   When I open a file, it all of a sudden has a clipping path around the image.  Also, it is slicing up some images randomly.  It is very strang and I can't explain it.  I just saved and closed the file yesterday and today I go to open it on the same computer and all the photos have these clipping masks around them and some are sliced into multiple pieces.  Can anyone help with this???

It's easily explained: It is opening the data as if it were an EPS or PDF, so the fault is probably with the options you chose when you saved the files in
CS2. Check them. also of course keep in mind that some specific features have notably changed, so it may do thius simply to retain appearance, which you can influence by setting teh respective prefs....

  • JS that applies all clipping paths at once?

    Hello,
I found the thread that contains the Applescript for this, but would love to have a Javascript that works the same. Anyone have or know of one for ID CS5 that will apply all clipping paths for a group of objects at once?
    Thanks in advance, as always
    Andy

So it's all Photoshop paths? Yes, it ought to work. Perhaps you also need to specify which path ... Try with this line added:
    app.selection[i].images[0].clippingPath.appliedPathName = app.selection[i].images[0].clippingPath.photoshopPathNames[0];
inside the try { .. } catch block. This ought to set the clipping path to the very first one in the file.
It's important to do operations such as these inside a try .. catch block, because this construction shields you from errors. Without the try .. catch, the script would issue an error for the very first image it encounters that has zero paths (and thus "the first", which is numbered #0, is not valid) and then stop with the error alert. Now it will still signal the error but the 'error handler' (the second curly-bracketed part) ensures it does nothing with that information, and so it will ignore the error and continue with the next image.
And yes, a Javascript needs to be saved as ".jsx" to work. Otherwise InDesign doesn't recognize it as a valid script.
