Strange lines appear around transparent PNG's when document PDF'ed

Hi
I have inserted some transparent PNG images into my Pages document, and they look fine on my screen, and they also look fine when I export to PDF and view in Preview.
However, if I view the PDF in Acrobat (or send it to a Non-Mac user and they view it in Acrobat), there are thin lines around many of the PNG images, which make them look ugly and sloppy, and very un-Mac-Like! Any ideas why these lines are appearing and how to prevent them?

Hi logree
Welcome to the forum.
My guess is that it is showing just the edge of the masked background used to hide the alpha channel background of the .png.
This happens I think, because the postscript mask may be centred on the outside rows of pixels in Acrobat, with half the pixels still being revealed.
You can try masking in Pages' instead:
+Menu > Format > Instant Alpha+
or try a Photoshop file with transparent background, to see if that eliminates the problem.

  • Lines appear around transparent objects!

    Hello,
I think my previous post on this topic was lost somewhere in the adobe forums machine, so please excuse my repost.
I've noticed that exporting layouts from InDesign CS3 that contain transparent graphics causes the resulting PDF to show DARK LINES AROUND the transparent objects (at the transparent border). I've been using all compatibilities (1.3--1.7), and found that the lines appear on any PDF set to 1.4 or above. (1.3 doesn't have the lines, but it shows stitching lines (white lines) around the entire transparent frame box, so it's unusable.)
If I zoom in and out with the reader, I see the lines come and go, but don't want users to see a poorly rendered PDF at ANY zoom level.
How can I create a professional looking PDF without lines at the transparent borders?
    thanks,
    JP

Thanks for the reply. That thread was helpful in showing some of the effects that I'm seeing (e.g., turning off "image smoothing" in the Acrobat preferences helps). However, I'm still interested in producing a clean looking PDF that doesn't contain dark pixels all around the edges of the transparent images.
To show what I'm talking about, I've posted a picture of screen captures with explanations at: http://www.viveredesign.com/images/example3.jpg
This effect only appears when I export a PDF with the Compatibility set to anything above "Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3)" (so it only looks good with the oldest item in the list).
If anyone has a suggestion on how to create a PDF without this effect, please let me know. I know I can always just put the blend in to the original image, but that seems so 1990's ;)
    thanks,
    JP

  • My Firefox interface is messed up. When I hover over or click a button it becomes all pixlated, the blocks move around, and lines appear around the buttons.

When I hover over or click a button on the tool bar it becomes messed up. Blocks, or more like pixels, appear over the buttons. They are white and they move around. Little black lines appear around the buttons too. I tried uninstalling and re-downloading Firefox, a full reset, etc. Nothing has worked so far. • Strange lines appearing behind itunes

I went away for the holidays, and when I got back I booted up my 2006 iMac. Today for the first time, there are strange lines appearing behind iTunes whenever it is open but not the active window. I tried quitting and restarting iTunes, but the lines come back. I wish I could upload a screen shot of what this looks like on my desktop, it's very weird. It does not happen behind any other program window. Only iTunes. The lines appear as if they are extensions of the iTunes window formatting, in line with the side bars, etc. Has anyone else experienced this? Any tips for getting it to quit?

I just wanted to add that I am also seeing the same problem: strange lines around the borders of the iTunes window. The most obvious ones are a set of four vertical lines running parallel to both sides of the iTunes window, although there are other strange bits as well, mostly around the top corners of the window, as well as a single thin horizontal line above the top of the iTunes window. These unusual lines started appearing "out of the blue" sometime in the past few weeks -- as in, not right after an update or any other configuration change to my mac... The only change I can say I did recently was to update to OS 10.6.6, although I know others who are running 10.6.6 and aren't having this issue with iTunes. I also wanted to add that in my case, I only see these strange lines when iTunes is the active window. Further to that, updating to iTunes 10.1.2 does not fix the problem, unfortunately.

  • How to fix black borders around transparent PNG files?

    Hello,
Recently, iMovie has started putting black borders around transparent PNGs. How can I fix this?

Any way to fix the alpha transparency when importing PNG files to iMovie 09?
I just know the two options - wrong (8bit) png or that plugin, which in an older version destroyed transparency..
what also make transparent-to-black is, when you 'manipulate' the imported png, esp. adding a *KenBurns Effect* - that kills transparency instantly.
    for test purposes:
    • create a new project
    • create a new png with some traansparency
    • add new png to new project - same result?
and just to avoid EVERY problem: your sys preferences/Monitor is set to 'million colors'?

  • Export to PDF causes fringing around transparent PNGs only in Acrobat

If I export to PDF from Keynote '09 using the "Best" setting, I'm getting black fringing around solid elements in a transparent PNG that was placed in the original keynote doc. This fringing does not occur when the PDF is viewed in Preview. Any suggestions on how to remove the fringing?
    Example is here: http://i.imgur.com/3QXGf.jpg
Thanks in advance for the help.

Perhaps my explanation of why this is a problem wasn't clear. The type of PDF links that Pages creates are, quite reasonably, set to highlight when clicked (there are a variety of options in PDF for the visual action of a clicked link; highlight is best for user feedback. In an ideal world, when the user clicks a link in a PDF, you want the a highlight box to appear over the text of the link - exactly over it, not too large, not too small.
Because Pages creates two links for each internal hyperlink, but the user will click only one of them in the PDF (whether in Preview or Acrobat), the highlight is almost guaranteed to be wrong for every click. If the user clicks the top link, only the top two-thirds of the text will highlight, and if the user clicks the bottom link, there will be a weird highlight either on the bottom third of the text or underneath it. It's inconsistent, but in most cases, it's wrong.
Obviously, this is only cosmetic, but it's the kind of mistake that hurts usability and detracts from the user experience, and as far as I can tell, there's absolutely no reason for it, making it a bug.
    cheers... -Adam

  • White lines appear around placed images in printing.

A native Illustrator document with placed Photoshop (both CS6) images produces whites lines around the placed images when printed.  The Illustrator document does not show white lines on screen.  Nor does the PDF (Acrobat X Pro) generated from the IA doc show white lines when viewed on screen.  When the document goes to press, the printed product show the white lines:
See upper left image and lower right image-note: other images are not affected.  Both both are native Photoshop images, placed on a gradient in IA.  Perhaps the PDF settings: "Adobe PDF Preset" or "Standard" are not chosen correctly?  Why the white lines?

You screenshot shows a modified Illustrator Default preset with Compatability to Acrobat 4. That setting always flattens transparency which is what I would suggest avoiding first.
Note the Warnings summary alerts that transparency will be flattened.

2.That same initial 'Save Adobe PDF' widow allows for three settings: Adobe PDF Preset (12 choices); Standard (6 choices), and Compatibility (5 choices).  Note how the window signals a Warning (Warnings: Saving this file with Compatibilty set to Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3) requires items with transparency to be flattened.)  Could this be a warning that produces the stitch lines in the actual printing?
    Yes

    After researching....
Discussion seems to indicate seeing 'stiching lines' on screen; sometimes in the designing application; or in the generated PDF.  My instances are visible only in printing-in two of the four images.
    1. Transparency.  Is this an automatic occurence in generating the PDF?  Can I turn it on/off? (The 'Save Adobe PDF' window that allows changes to: General, Compression, Marks & Bleeds,Output,, Advanced.....)
Transparency is part of some design and all Effects. Note that you can change a color by using a tint or by setting it's transparency. Many times a tint will suffice. It looks the same and has the same values.
Your original screenshot apears to use images with clipping paths. (Full disclosure - I should know this, but don't...I expect) clipping paths require/invoke the transparent background to place the images within the colored area.
You cannot get around transparency but flattening converts vector objects to raster objects (when transparency touches/abuts/interacts with raster images).
You should be able to use the Illustrator Default, High Quality Print or PDFX-4 to maintain live transparency
2 very old (2004) Adobe white papers, not too legnthy which I can shed some light. Note - PDFX-4 superceeds all of these.

  • Lines appearing around menu navigation

    Hi,
I don't know why but I have started get hairlines around the top navigation of my site.
In design mode it looks OK:
In the Muse preview it looks OK:
But in the browser preview these lines appear:
I didn't make any changes to the menu, it just started happening, perhaps since a Muse update.
Can anybody point me in the right direction in order to resolve the problem? I have gone in to all elements of the menu and checked that there is no stroke on anything.
    Many Thanks in advance.

The other thing to note is that this menu appears in the header of a master page. When I drag the menu into the main body of the master page the lines don't show.

  • New Iphone 4S - Will not slide, white line appears around it like a box

I bought an Iphone 4S yesterday and when I try unlock it will not allow me. I try to slide across and the box appears around it. If I happen to get it unlocked after pressing for awhile it does the same with any apps I press on. The white link/box appears around the apps.
I have tried to re-boot and that did not work (Using home and sleep button together until the Apple logo appeared)

Make sure Settings > General > Accessibility - Assistive touch is off.

  • Strange line appearing on my home page

I keep having a strange rectangular line appearing on just my home page below the banner. How can I fix this?

Thanks for the reply. It is just appearing on the actual web site, not in iWeb. Regardless of what computer the website is accessed from, the line still appears. I am not finding anything on the layout or view option in actual iWeb.

  • Strange lines appear in tables?

Whenever I delete a row or column at the end of a table a strange black line appears, I have to keep going back to strokes and fills to adjust the table to have I want it. Is there something I am doing wrong?

Before and after screen shots would be very helpful, along with the version of ID and your OS. Embed the images in a post using the camera icon on the web page like this:

  • After updating to v. 6.X.X, vertical lines appear around the cursor when typing in webpages such as Gmail and Facebook that persist, obscuring text and other pixels in the webpage. Didn't happen before this update.

I noticed after updating to Firefox version 6.0.1 that vertical lines the same size and shape as the text cursor remain behind on the screen as the cursor moves (either while typing or by using arrow keys). This is most obvious and annoying in text-heavy applications such as when typing in Gmail, Facebook, and work webmail, for instance. (Interestingly, it's not happening now as I type this.)
This is very annoying because these lines obscure parts or even entire letters in words that have been typed. I thought that it might have been a Firefox customized 'skin' I added at the same time as updating, but I reverted to the default view and the problem remains.

  • Bold lines appear around outside right edge and bottom of some pages.

Several pages now have bold lines around outside right edge, bottom and center of document.  This bold line is also in center between pages in spread. None of the pages are showing automatic page numbers, and when I try and export to pdf, the pdf is blank. What have I done to create these bold lines?  Why are pages not showing? Why does pdf appear blank?

Which version of ID and your OS?
We're going to need screen captures to see what you are talking about.
Is your content on layers marked non-printing? Does it disappear in InDesign when you switch to Preview mode?

I have just installed the update for Acrobat Pro 9.3.1 and now am getting random black keylines around any windows open on my Mac. It does not matter which application, they are appearing on everything. They also show up on the screen when randomly when clicking around the windows.

Today, 3/31/2008, we received a "patch" from Oracle/Hyperion support that consisted of 3 SQL scripts to apply to the BI+ repository. After applying the folder permissions are now able to be set along with the objects in the folders. We found we lost provisioning for MSAD groups to the reporting ans analysis applications (workspace), but not sure if this happened because of not shutting down all the services including Shared Services. Since this was a dev environment, not a problem, but in our production environment we will ensure a complete listing of the provisioning before applying. Awaiting word from support about the provisioning issue.
There is an open bug report from a different client and apparently this is fixed in 9.5.
