Strange Mail/Gmail trash behavior - syncing trash

I'm using Apple Mail (2.1.3) with Gmail (IMAP) with my Mailbox Behaviors set: Store drafts on server (checked) Store sent (unchecked) Store junk (checked) Move deleted messages to Trash (checked) Store deleted messages on server (unchecked).
I'd like to have my Trash in Mail synced with Trash in Gmail but I can't seem to make this happen. All that appears in my Gmail trash when I composed/send/receive/delete email in Mail is many iterations of any email I compose. What seems to be happening is when I compose email in Mail, a snapshot of the draft is placed in my Gmail Trash folder periodically. If I spend 30 minutes composing an email, I will end up with 10-15 snapshots of the draft taken periodically while I was writing the email.
I've tried a variety of combinations of Mail preferences with no change in this behavior. Anyone have any ideas? I don't really mind the snapshotting, but I would like to sync the two Trash folders if possible.
Also, what is the difference between the Trash folder and Deleted Messages folder in Mail? When I check "Store deleted messages on server" in Mail preferences, a Deleted Messages folder appears in Mail and acts like Trash used to (it receives deleted messages and the old Trash folder stays empty). Neither one is synced with the Gmail trash folder...
Thanks for any help!

I've been playing with this also lately and being new to both Gmail and Apple Mail I agree that it's a little tricky. My only comment is that with regards to Trash and Deleted Messages, "Deleted Messages" appears to be a Gmail label that Apple Mail assigns to messages when you delete them (which also creates a corresponding folder in Apple Mail) - whereas Trash is the official [Gmail]\Trash folder. Due to the redundancy Google recommends NOT checking the "Move deleted messages to Trash".

  • After 10.5.6 Update - Mail & Gmail (imap) not syncing correctly

After updating to 10.5.6, Mail is not syncing with my Gmail (imap) accounts correctly. For example, I will receive an email and have notifications both in Mail and my iPhone. If I read the email from my iPhone, Mail will not show the email has been read or deleted unless I quit and reopen. Gmail does, however, show the email as read or deleted almost immediately. Manually syncing Mail with an account doesn't work. Only quitting and reopening Mail. Any suggestions?

That's a shame. Did you read earlier:

No problem with Gmail IMAP account here, although not using with an iPhone. Are you accessing your Gmail account from Mail as an IMAP type account?
Also, in some other discussion, I read that someone trashed their "com.apple.mail.plist" in their home/library/preferences folder and restarted
mail and it was successful, including each message where they were supposed to be.
I try and find that link.

  • Strange Mail SMTP server behavior after 10.5.2

After update 10.5.2 my mail will sometimes pick one of my three mail account SMTP servers to send mail at random. There are no error messages and no errors from the SMTP servers. Mail just sends the mail using one of the other servers. Any guesses as to what is going on? I plan to submit a Radar on this.

Have you tried checking the "Use only this server" box in your account prefs?

  • While creating a new email, various portion of the mail will appear in the trash box.

after creating a new email and send sucessfully,  breakdown of the full content in the mail will appear in the trash box without my intention. The breakdown were in seperate uncompleted  mail/mails depending on the lenght of the email. Everytime after a simple email of about 3-5 sentences conpriseing of less then 30 words, 5 - 10 seperate trash box mail appeared. it worst when duration is longer while creating the email. Any advise to eliminate this situation??

You probably have "Store draft messages on the server" checked in the Mailbox Behaviors of the mail account(s) on which you are experiencing this, and the server's reaction to having a second, third, etc. draft of the same message stored is to put the older copy in the trash. Not all servers react like this, but some like Gmail seem to so do.
If you won't need to change Macs in the middle of composing an email message and can live with retyping a message you were composing at the time of a crash, you can probably turn off this feature.

  • Apple Mail STILL does NOT sync with GMAIL...even with Mavericks 10.9.2...why?

Apple MAIL still does not sync well with Gmail.
I have to close Apple Mail program down, re-load it, select "synchonize all accounts." Then MAYBE it will finally sync up. If not, I do this again and again. Then, randonmly it seems, it finally syncs.
My iOS devices sync instantly and accurately 100% of the time. When I pull down the inbox to update, it does so almost at once. Accurately.
WHY does Mavericks APPLE MAIL have so many issues STILL!? Worked fine before Mavericks? Is there a solution?
    Mike

I'm not sure if you were seriously asking or just looking for a place to vent, but I've read a lot about this topic and so I'll give a brief reply.
Unfortunately, I've not seen a solution to this problem. Many people have had success with various "voodoo" solutions (re-starting or some variant) but there's really been no reliable, consistent answer to this problem. Most people seem to think that syncing was improved (but was not completely fixed) with the 10.9.2 update. The only "solution" I've seen is to move off of GMail.
As to WHY this is happening, well, again I've not seen anybody diagnose the problem in any scientific way, but the consensus seems to be that this problem started because Apple modified the way the Mail program stored and indexed a GMail account. Many people (including you) say "it worked fine before" and yes perhaps it did, but there was a big problem lurking.
As you might know, Google moved off the mail standard when they created their mail system. Now, this is a rant for another post, but IMO by doing that they should have provided code for 3rd-party mail clients to use their new mail system properly. But of course that would defeat any competitive advantage their own client had, so instead all they did was support an IMAP interface.
The problem is that when an email arrives at your GMail account, it is in your Inbox and also in the "All Mail" folder. This is not in concert with IMAP protocol where a message is only in one folder. So a naive IMAP email client downloads such a message twice. If a message happens to be in a several folders (tags in GMail-speak), an IMAP client downloads it several times. It might have looked like it was "working fine" to you, but for people who have many gigabytes of mail, this duplication is a big problem.
Likewise, if you search for an email, an unaware IMAP client will find it in multiple folders, and report back each copy. Anyway, you get the idea. Apple tried to improve their Mail client to support this, and unfortunately they have a big bug. Well, I say "big" because it really annoys me. Apparently it must be not be affecting a large percentage of Mavericks users or else they would have fixed it by now. Even more annoying, there's no "switch" to get Mail to act like a dumb IMAP client again. It appears to detect that it is talking to GMail and this new system kicks in automatically. (Perhaps this could be tricked by using some kind of proxy?)
So why is this not happening on iOS? Well, again, nobody knows for sure (and Apple isn't saying), but the theory is that they didn't implement this complex scheme on iOS (yet). Maybe they were first testing it out on Mavericks, or perhaps they didn't think it was worth the trouble because on iOS the Mail caches are typically much smaller. On a desktop machine, usually there is a copy of all your IMAP mail sitting on the disk. On a mobile device, only a few messages are kept around at any time.
Sorry I don't have more info to give at this time. Good luck.
    Bark.

  • E-Mails Being Permanently Deleted from trash

My emails are being permenantly deleted automatically from my trash folder after a week.  How can I stop this?  Thanks!

    Howdy jknud2323,
iCloud mail normally moves deleted messages to the Trash and then deletes them permanently after 30 days. If you do not with them to be deleted, you can have iCloud move them to another folder instead of the Trash. See this article -
    iCloud: Delete email
    Specifically -
Change where deleted messages are stored
By default, iCloud Mail moves messages to the Trash when you delete them, and messages in the Trash are erased permanently when they’re 30 days old. If you don’t want your messages to be automatically erased after 30 days, you can have iCloud Mail move them to another folder.
Choose Preferences from the Action pop-up menu  in the sidebar.
In the General pane, select “Move deleted messages to,” choose another folder from the menu, then click Done.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Best,
    Brett L

  • Incoming mail in Mac Mail is all going to trash. Why?

My Internet Service provider notified me that my mailbox was full so I deleted thousands of messages.  Mail continues to arrive in trash.  I have an iMac computer, Version 10.6.8.  How can I get the mail to come to my incoming mailbox?

Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup),  it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move this folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.
If that doesn't do it and you can afford to redo all your Rules, try these & reboot...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist.backup
Note, in 10.5 & up /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/ may or may not exist.

  • Mail and Gmail are not syncing

I am having the syncing problem when trying to set up my account. I've gone through the set up process multiple times double checking everything. When the page comes up "checking the IMAP server" it takes forever then comes to a screen that says "The IMAP server “mail.gmail.com” is not responding. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the “Incoming Mail Server” field. If it still doesn’t respond, the server might be temporarily unavailable."
The only problem is I check the internet connection and its fine. I check all my info and as far as I know, its fine.
    Please help!

Hello onewhisdrums, and a warm welcome to the forums!
    This might be easy.
Incoming Mail Server for IMAP should be...
    imap.gmail.com
mail.gmail.com is for POP3, smtp.gmail.com is good for Outgoing on both.

  • How do I get my ALL MAIL gmail folder back in Mac Mail after upgrading to Mavericks?

    Hi
I've upgraded to Mavericks - very cool !........ but my Mac Mail gmail ALL MAIL folder seems to have vanished in my Mac Mail listings.
Any advice how to get it back?
    N)

It seems its all in the new ARCHIVE folder which shows up now.......but dont delete mails in the inbox as that really deletes them and they go to TRASH.  So you have to manually MOVE TO ARCHIVE to ensure it finds itself in ALL MAIL on the gmail server.  Hope that helps?

  • I am unable to save my gmail Mailbox behaviors?

    I have two issues.
    1. Multiple draft copies saved with in my Trash for my Gmail account.
    2. Google suggests settings to correct this but with imail it will not let me save the changes I try to make plus, I can not even un-check my Trash behavior options.

Well I figured out how to be able to uncheck and save the save drafts and save sent messages.
Then I already changed that back. Because all the sent messages I had were no longer in the imap folder with in iMail. I need to be able to search that and re-send messages all the time, so did not like that.
But I have never been able to un-check trash settings?
So short answer to your question..yes I can change some settings.
