Strange marks underneath display. Damaged pixels?

My MacBook Pro's display has got some white marks in it. They are only visible when the screen is displaying dark colors. No matter how much you zoom in it will always be there. I suspect some of the pixels are damaged? Please help!

Fear the worst. Strange marks on display

Hi,
2005 iMac (PPC) on 10.5.8. When viewing a picture in Preview or iPhoto get this strange column-like hatching effect on screen. Also, occasionally the whole display freaks out and looks like a dog's (cat's?) regurgitated breakfast, until a restart which seems to right things for a while. Afraid the graphics card is heading south, can anyone confirm please? Is it fixable or am I looking at a hole in my wallet? Many thanks for any any advice :-)

You may have a problem with the video chip.
Here is how to tell...
Shutdown your machine. Hold down the shift key. Poweron. Bootup will be longer.
Wait awhile while you harddrive is being checked.

Runs OK in safe mode...
Running in Safe mode leaves out some video drivers. Which results in your machine not using advanced video hardware. As luck would have it, you can run the safe mode video drivers in normal mode.

White IPAD2 64 3G - White dot underneath Screen, Dead pixel

Hi,
I am residing in Stockholm,Sweden. i bought my ipad2 the day it was released here on march 25th.
3 days back, i noticed a dead pixel, which was visible while using safari. i have downloaded the pixfix app to confirm the dead pixel. the pixifix conducts few tests by changing the colors and the dead pixel was visible as black.
how ever, i switched off the ipad and to my astonishment, i can see a small white dust/mark underneath the glass with no visible scratches or anything. since i take care of my IPAD very well.
i had the same problem with my first generation ipad after few months which apple replaced it.
since then, i called apple in stockholm, and they directed me to go to Digitall Inn their premium reseller/support. this is the place I bought my ipad2. i went in there and the support guy(daniel) try arguing that it is not a dead pixel instead scratch. and he had no answer when i showed him the white dust/mark. he said one of their technicians will analyze and get back. this was happening last saturday.
its been two days since they never updated/called me, i called up digital inn and i was told that, they will take a photograph of the issues and send to apple. it will take 3 more days to get an udpate from apple. and he also offered me to take the ipad2 back or keep it in store. i told them i need a solution to this and till then they can keep it.
i am seriously surprised by the kind of support i am getting from digital inn. i have invested a lot in this device, and when it is defective, i dont understand the kind of support i am getting from this premium resller

Yesterday afternoon at 1.01 pm, got a call from the technician at digital inn, and he told me that apple had indeed sent a new ipad for me and i could go there to collect it.
well, i was thrilled by the sudden turnarround of events and i rushed from my place of work to get it.
so finally a brand new one, i beilive no refurbished stuff. bought a belkin verve folio from webhallen which is next to digitall inn in stockholm.
so glad that, go every thing fast rather than after 2-3 weeks.

in stockholm, sweden, they dont have any apple stores but we have to go through thier premium resellers who has stores similar to apple store. hence for any issues, we are left with no choice but work with these folks. digitall inn is one of thier premium reseller.

Strange mark on my screen

Just noticed a strange marking on my screen when it is turned off, I've tried to clean it off with various products, but it appears to be grease-proof.
Anyone know what it might be or how I might go about getting rid of it?

Take the MBP to your local Apple Store or an AASP. Let them deal w/it.

Mb air mid 2011 closed - display damage by heat?

Hi all !
I am using a Macbook Air mid 2011 connected with an external monitor.
While working with the external monitor, the the macbook stays closed.
I am a bit affraid of display damage caused by heat when the display is closed.
Do I need to worry about that when I am using Final Cut Pro or another "processor intensive" application?

I used to have the same problem, but found it was a problem with the router (crappy isp provided router), it couldn't handle large MTUs with VPN and just dropped the WiFi for some reason, i got a cheap simple netgear router instead and it solved the problem.
Before i got a new router i found i could mitigate the problem by reducing the MTU (maximum transmission unit) on the VPN clients end, although this reduced performance. However i was using openVPN with a third party client "Viscosity" because OS X doesn't have built in openVPN support. I noticed there isn't an MTU setting in the network pref pane for PPTP and L2TP which i'm guessing your school will use for compatibility. You might be able to do it from the command line but it's probably easier to just pick a third party client like Viscocity.
Alternatively if you have ssh access you could use "sshuttle" which works like a VPN but better because it's not sending TCP packets over TCP packets... it's a bit new, but i'll explain briefley if it's applicable. It's easy to set up (nothing to install server side).

Strange marks during reading Rs232 buffer

Hello,
I have got the problem with read Rs232 buffer.
I am sending a frame to initiate an buffer from RAM of the external device. Everything looks correct, the device is answering, but during reading a feedback message i receive a strange marks(attached jpg). I wrote adequate software in c# to have sure the external equipment is available, it works. So i checked if in my .vi are any bytes in the received buffer of Rs232, yes they are...So the problem is in LABView. Does anyone have had the same situation?
I am wondering if there is no any problem with fonts or something?

You should only be configuring your port once. That should be done before this loop. By configuring the port inside of the loop, you are reinitializing that port with every call. That could cause weird things while the configuring is happening.
You should probably have a wait sometime between your write and your read to allow your device to respond.
Is your device sending an End Of Line character at the end of each message? If so, get rid of the "Bytes At Port" propery node. Just tell the read to read something really large. It will automatically stop reading when that End of Line character is found. If it isn't sending that character, you should disable that with the Configure Serial Port (that you should have BEFORE that loop).

Strange marks in page list

This is my list of pages in a book of over 150 pages. In the pages list I have these strange marks indicated by arrows. Anyone know what they are and how did I get them?

Sorry to keep going on about this but I would like to find out more. I have checked other Indesign files with section breaks but they do show these marks. Also the file that shows the marks in the pages list has a square bracket around pp xii-1. Hope the image will show you this.

Strange marks on Curve 8900 screen

Hi folks,
I hope someone can help me out. I have a new blackberry 8900 javelin (have like 4 months of use) and some strange marks appeared on the screen. They are small marks, but they don't disappear. I had the same problem with my last curve 8900 (I had 3 8900 models) but last time, the marks disappeared in a few days. Those on mine are not disappearing. I know it's not a liquid crystal leak, it's a malfunction or something, because the mark had a different shape in a few days ago. Here are some pictures i took to show the problem.

Those marks are definitely hardware/lcd screen related. I would suggest contacting your network service provider or point of sale for repair options as this is not software related.

Strange marks/dents on 2010 Unibody MacBook Pro

Hey everyone,
Had my MacBook Pro 15" from new in late 2010, and it's been great so far.
More recently, I've been noticing these very strange marks on the casing, on the bottom right corner, near to the IR port (next to the flashing white light). There's a mark on the front, which looks as if it's "coming out" of the IR slot, and then another mark on top of the casing, in the same location (this one can't really be seen in the attached photos). They don't seem to be stains as such, but more depression marks that you'd get if you compressed soft metal. They're like white-coloured creases in the metal - very weird!
I've tred rubbing/cleaning, but they won't go away. Thinking about it, I'm right handed, and the marks are right under where I rest my arm/wrist when typing. There is also a faint line starting to appear to the right of the trackpad, which I have noticed over the last few days. But I would have thought that the Unibody would be able to take more than just the weight of my forearm! I don't lean on the MacBook, just lightly rest my wrist whilst typing. There're not sweat stains, either, because I lean on my shirt sleeve, as opposed to my bare skin touching the MacBook.
Anyway - does anyone know what they are, or has anyone else had them before? Should I be worried about them? I've attached some pictures to help. Sorry about the lighting - but it's the only way they would show up on camera!

MacBook pro frozen and display is pixelated / fragmented

I was watching an avi file through VLC when the computer froze. The sound continued but I could not force quit or use the mouse or keyboard, so I shutdown manually with the power button. I tried to reboot, but the Display was pixelated / fragmented (on the grey startup screen), and the computer was frozen. Again, I manually shut down, then tried to power on again in safe mode.. It began to load in safe mode, but as the bar was progressing it again froze (the display was still pixelated during this process. I let the computer rest for 20 mins while turned off, and then once more tried to reboot in safe mode.. Problem remained. I tried doing it with the power plugged in and out. It is about 5 years old this mac book pro, and is running on snow leopard, all software was updated about a month ago (so I don't believe there are any software updates that it is lacking to run effectively). Luckily I did a huge backup 2 days ago, but I have done some work in the meantime, and need my computer for work. I have booked an appointment at the genius bar, but was hoping some lovely person out there may have a quicker fix, or at least give me an idea of what I'm up against. Cheers.

Monitor Display Size - pixels

I downloaded a royalty free image which is 732(w) x 900(h) 72dpi. However, In the browser, or in some of the default 'image' programs I have in my computer, the image opens in about 1/2 that size. Because if i did the math at 72dpi, the picture should display at about 10 inches. It was my understanding that computer monitor resolution will determine the size and that monitor resolution is normally 72 to 96dpi. Yet my picture is being displayed in the browser (and other programs) at about 140dpi, generating an image about 1/2 the size i would expect (about 5 inches wide). The funny thing is when i open in Adobe Acrobat, the same 5inch display is marked as being 50% displayed, so that when I change that view to 100%, the picture is closer to the 10inches i would normally expect. Can anyone explain this apparent default shrinking display?????? thank you, S

Steve is right. Final Cut Pro will correct the display of rectangular PAL pixels with no trouble. Can you imagine if every time anyone wanted to edit video they had to manually resize it and wait for it to render? Nothing would ever get done.
If you start messing around with the pixel dimensions you're only going to cause trouble... in Final Cut Pro. You'll only have a pixel-aspect ratio problem if you want to display your videos on a computer outside of FCP. Is that part of your workflow?
Every PAL DV camera I've shot with has utilized all 720 pixels across. What camera are you shooting with?
And you shouldn't need to setup a PCI card in order to monitor DV from FCP. If you hook up your camcorder to the computer via firewire and hook up the camcorder to your monitor then you can turn on "external video" in FCP and you should have no trouble.

22 in display red pixel flickering

I have an older second hand 22 in cinema display connected to my 1.25 ghz powerbook. it uses an older round adc/dvi adapter. anyone know why or how to solve constant red pixels/lines flickering horizontally on black backgrounds?

Hi Byron,
If the normal display on your powerbook is OK, then it won't be the graphics card.
If you can, try hooking the ADC display to another computer (preferably one with an ADC port). If the display functions OK, then the problem is not within the display.
That leaves the adaptor and the connections between the powerbook and the display.
You need to check that all physical connections are clean, intact and tight. Check for loose wire connections by gently wiggling the cables where they insert into plugs (if it's loose, you will see changes in the display).
Check that there is no play in the DVI output on the powerbook - plugs can exert a lot of leverage on this socket, and it is possible that there is physical damage.
Depending on what you find, you may be able to sort this out yourself. However, a lot of these plugs are not user serviceable, and the Powerbook DVI output certainly isn't.

Strange mark on screen when darker colors appear over the area

I just noticed this today. When I view an image with a black screen or darker shades of gray a weird white mark appears in front of the color. I realize this is most likely a problem ON the physical display. Basically, I'm wondering if this can be fixed and if it would be covered under warranty. If you are talking about that ghostly, banana-shaped crescent on the right side of the picture you linked, that looks like what happens when there is crush damage to an LCD's light spreader. I have seen that kind of pattern on notebook screens where people have accidentally dropped something on top of the closed lid, or else even accidentally stepped on the closed notebook getting out of bed or under a pile of newspapers or something like that. Or another scenario is putting it in a case and packing it into the trunk of a car and piling heavy things on top of it and taking a trip with the case packed like that.
Is the lid on the MBP dented from above in that area? If it's under warranty and shows no signs of external abuse, you might be able to get the LCD panel replaced by Apple for free under the assumption that it left the factory in that condition, e.g. a manufacturing defect. But more likely than not Apple will claim it is abuse and won't fix it under warranty. But you can always try.

Small black mark on display

Hey,
I noticed a small black mark (looks like a collection of pixels) right near the finder icon at the lower left corner of my display. It's about 2mm in width and 1.5mm in height. It's not something on the actual screen, I tried to clean it off with iKlear, I also restarted the Macbook and it was there even during the restart. I've only had it since December, and I have AppleCare, but I got it from the UK, and I'm in Lebanon for a few months, so I don't know what to do. Is this covered under the warranty, I know an Apple Service store here, but I wanted to know if anyone knows anything about this.

From all I have read, Apple will evaluate dead pixels on a case by case basis and make a decision. If they determine that there are an excessive number of dead pixels or there is some other serious flaw with the display, they will replace the display under warranty. If they determine that the problem is minor and within their tolerance specs, they will not. Different Apple people will have different opinions on this. It's kind of a gray area.
You have nothing to lose by asking. If the spot is truly bothersome to you, you may well be able to get the display replaced. However, if you bought the Mac and the Applecare in the UK, you may need to get it serviced in the UK. I don't really know how that works in your part of the world, so you would have to ask to find out for sure.
You might also want to take photos of it and see if it seems to be getting worse over time. If it is, I would expect that Apple would replace it for you eventually.
