Strange Menu Bar

Hi All
Just updated to Leopard and I now have a semi - transparent menu bar.
Whatever picture I have as the backdrop I can see behind the menu bar, looked through the obvious
setting to change this and can find nothing.
Anybody know how I can change this ?

It's a "feature". I don't think there is a way to turn it off.

  • Strange menu bars appearing

    Hello!
Today when I was doing my physics simulations a strange thing appeared.
A menu bar like in the app not in fullscreen mode appeared. With no content. Just empty menu bar and it appered in front of fullscreen mode Xcode/Safari/Mail. And the worst thing was that I wasn't able to kill it. When I clicked on that, nothing happened. Then after a some time (I wasn't near my Mac all the time, but I was in room where it is) there showed up another dummy bar. When I restarted my Mac, it doesn't repeated at all.
    May it be the malware?
But I'm not running pirated software, all software I have - is opensource/buyed/downloaded from the developer (AppCleaner, Amazon Kindle).
I started ClamXav scan, but it didn't find anything at all.
    What may be that?
P.S. I forget to take screenshots, sorry for that.
P.P.S. I was running SSH connection to the server about 17 hours long.

I found those logs to be "non-standard"(i.e. not com.apple.WebKit, WindowServer, kernel e.t.c.):

  • Strange Menu Bar Clock Behavior

My Clock in Menu Bar Does Not Show Same Time as Preference Pane Date and Time. It has the accurate date but the time is +4hrs. Changing the time zone has no affect!
Is there a plist to delete?
    Anyone else see this?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Read elsewhere to replace the following preferences file in my user library and I did so and it worked after restart!!

  • Can anyone identify this network monitor on my menu bar?

About 3 weeks ago after a restart, a strange menu bar icon showed up in the upper right hand part of my screen, listing my upload/download network speed in red and green. Thing is, for the life of me I can't figure out which application is linked to this display.
I have installed Intego's Virus Barrier, but that's the only item that I've put on my mac for a while. I can't click or right click the item. Anyone recognize it?

  • Strange Character in Menu Bar

My friend called me with a strange problem on his Mac Mini. He said today when he restarted his Mac all this desktop icons and menu bars have been change. Instead of the normal menus such as File, Edit, View etc... He now sees a bunch of "A" with square boxes around them. I had him repair disk permissions, reset PRAM. I also took him into the international system pref to see if his default language and Input menu had been changed away from English/US. Those all checked out as normal. I had him send me a screen shot of what he's seeing. I've posted it here: http://members.cox.net/bdm12071980/icons.jpg
Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi
I'd guess that your friend has done something to one or more of the system fonts.

  • Strange: Mac screen menu-bar requires max-heap-size to be set.

I planned to omit the max-heap-size attribute in the line of my jnlp file
    <j2se version="1.6+" max-heap-size="256m" />
The idea was that with Java 1.6 the heap size is set automatically
    according to the client's RAM.
Unfortunately, the Macintosh screen menu-bar works if and only if the max-heap-size attribute is present.
    It is a MacOsX=1.4 with Java1.5.
Strange, since the Mac runs Java 1.5 and I am talking about settings for 1.6.
The jnlp passed ValidateJNLP at http://mindprod.com/jgloss/jnlp.html#VALIDATION
Here is another post stating that attributes in JNLP have side effects on Mac's screen menu-bar:
    http://lists.apple.com/archives/Java-dev/2008/Jul/msg00122.html
    Here is my jnlp:
    w3m -dump http://www.bioinformatics.org/strap/strap.jnlp
Is there an explanation for this?

The error might still be in the Sun's code.Could be. But to fix the Mac VM it would require the following.
    1. Find it in the Sun VM.
    2. Fix it in the Sun VM.
    3. Move the changes to the Mac VM...somehow.

If the jdk would be smaller, less redundant and clearer, then
open JDK could be possibly compiled on a Mac.
Not sure what that means since there are likely OS level calls that must be implemented in some place in the API. Which are specific to Mac.
Just as there are differences between windows/solaris/linux which Sun accounted for.
And that would be what Apple would have done to make it work on Mac. And what someone (someone who likes Mac) will need to continue to do with the public release (explusion?) which is the form that Java will have going forward.
The main thing that should be improved on a Macintosh
is to directly allow for Linux and Solaris executables such that the Linux JDK could directly work on a Mac.The main thing, again, is the Apple is no longer supporting Java on the Mac.
And Apple, not Sun and certainly not Oracle, were the ones that created the Java VM.
So the main thing at this point is that ALL future directions that Java take are dependent not on Apple but on the Macintosh community. That includes features as well as fixes.

  • Strange icon appears in the menu bar randomly

I'm using a late '13 macbook pro retina and recently I've noticed that a strange icon will popup in the menu bar somewhat randomly, though it seems to appear most when I access certain websites (ebay is the one I've noticed it happen the most).
The icon is between the power level and the date and time and appears in the spot where the keyboard language icon usually is. When I try to click the icon nothing happens and it just opens the language drop down menu. It disapears after a few seconds but when it appears a strange black flicker will appear at the top of my screen just below the menu bar.
    Thanks

  • 10.4.4 Strange Problem – Menu Bar Icons

I installed the OS X 10.4.4 update through Software Update this morning, repairing permissions before and afterwards. Although the installation seemed to work fine, there is now a strange problem which has happened since I first re-started the Mac.
The left side of the menu bar is working normally, with the curved corner and apple/application menus, but all the icons, the clock, and even Spotlight have disappeared from the right.
Even stranger, the top-right corner is not curved, but is square and extends right to the corner of the monitor.
I did use ShapeShifter, but I doubt this has caused the error as I disabled it before the update, and have not re-enabled it since.
Does anyone have any idea what's happened, or what I should do about it?

    I had the same problem.
I updated to 10.4.4 a few days ago. After restarting, the entire top right of the menu bar disappeared, went missing.
The corner of the screen became square rather than the usual rounded effect. the clock disappeared, as well as all the items up there .. battery, airport, bluetooth, etc. It all just disappeared.
It made no difference at all if you went to the control panel and turned on the items again ... the whole top-right area of the menu bar was messed up.
Based on the info in the previous - THANKS - here is how I fixed the problem.
I got my other laptop (I guess if you're an OSX user, it's good to have two laptops!) which still had a working menu bar. I copied the folder
    /System/Library/CoreServices/Search.bundle
from my working powerbook to the powerbook with the missing menu bar. You will have to be able to log in as root on the target machine to do this.
I simply restarted and then everythying was fine. I did NOT have to resinstall 10.4.4 or anything.
    Why does it happen?
I too had got rid of the spotlight search field at the top right of the menu bar by dsoing the usual hack to get rid of it. It appears this interacts badly with the updates.
Since a large percentage of users want to get rid of the spotlight search field in the menu bar, this will probably be an ongoing problem with each new upgrade...

  • Strange behaviour: menu bar freezes, programm icons incomplete

    People,
I dont know what happened to my system.
I had some problems with the entourage database on my mac. Since i was not able to resolve it in any way (ms database utility was starting up and unexpectetdly quit always - if anybody can help here?) i noticed some odd behaviour and i started to delete all microsoft files from my mac.
But now there is still somethin strange going on.
For exemplae when i try to open a programm which has no programm icon yet (eg downloaded from internet) i will get a message that the programm my be damaged.
After that i can do merely nothing on my system!
I still have my finder-menu-bar - but i can not select andything to do for example a restart or to shut down. I also cant do this from other programs. only way is to activate the user switch in the right upper corner, go to the login screen and there (i can log in my user again there) select force restart.
i am absolutely clueless what is going on here!
My system was a leopard clean install and i took great care that everything is neat.
Now i have been sitting ducks here with the whole day start - force restart and so on.
    Any ideas?

Your HD may be failing, for one thing.
Run DU and check both the HD and repair the file permissions.
Windows programs can collect and retransmit viruses and possibly damage some files. There are reports of a few viruses for Macs.
But I suspect it is most likely your HD going South.
If DU does not turn up any errors, post back.

  • Strange! JDev Menu Bar Disappears

    Hello,
Has anyone experienced wierd behavior with jdev (either 10g or 9) - where the graphical menu bars disappear? I still see the file menu, but the other menus are gone.
    --Bill

I just thought I'd update this thread for future generations who may run into this problem. It took filing a TAR with Oracle to finally get an answer. It seems that the ide.properties file in the {install_dir}\jdev\system9.0.5.2.1618 directory sometimes becomes corrupt if JDeveloper fails to exit properly. If you delete this directory, the next time you start JDev, it will rebuild this directory. Unfortunately, you'll lose all of your previous settings for connections and window layouts. You can migrate from a previous version to help this somewhat. I've made a backup copy of my properties file in case this happens again.
    Hope this helps,
    Mark Brown

  • Strange OS X Menu Bar bug

    Hi,
Does anybody ever seen this? Is there an explanation?
    Thanks

Hi, I'm not sure exactly what features you're referring to, but I know that ever since the 10.6.4 update, every time I do a restart, my screen shows only the icons that belong on the right side of the menu bar. The menu bar itself is not there--far more alarming, though, is that the apple that should appear in the far left corner (the one I need to restart, shut down, do software update checks, etc.) is completely missing, along with the words Finder, File, Edit, View, Go, Window, Help (just like your machine in your picture). In other words, the whole Finder. These items appear to be missing from your menu bar as well, so I'm guessing that your problem is the same as mine.
Looking through the topics in this discussion area, we are not the only ones experiencing this problem. The first time this happened (when the computer restarted following the update), I waited forever, thinking that things were happening inside and that eventually the Finder and the menu bar would show up. Normally, if something that affected the whole machine happened, I would do a restart. Since I couldn't do that (without shutting it down by using the on/off button next to the keyboard), I just clicked on an application in my Dock, and suddenly the Finder and the menu bar appeared. Have you tried this to see if the rest of your menu bar appears?
This is pretty scary and began IMMEDIATELY after the update. Has any one else found this or does anyone have a solution? Please use small words--I am most definitely not familiar with the files, etc., that make my Mac go (no clue about utilities, etc.).

  • Date/time icon and other movable icons on menu bar cannot be loaded on startup, but it works if manually loaded

Strange things happened since my mbp 13' (MD-101) was upgraded to 10.8.4 ----------- time icon, battery icon, and language icon (these icons can be moved when held Command key and drag) cannot be loaded on startup, but they still can be loaded when you get into System Preferences and manually  turn them on, as well as iStat Menus
However, some other icons didn't bother, things like BetterTouchTool, NewsBar. They are immovable!! I guess it is the key factor that the icon is movable or not making the difference.
Someone please lend me a helping hand?
I've attached some pictures in order to make my situation easier to be understood.
these icons can't be loaded on my loggin in.
but they can be loaded manually
however, these icons will be loaded on startup
I've almost despaired to resolve it . Thanks for your help!

I have a similar issue. When the computer goes into "Hibernate" mode -- that is, it loses power while sleeping and it writes the contents of it's memory to disk in order to boot into that exact configuration when woken up -- many of my icons when Apple-Tab'ing to another application appear as static. They look like a slightly colorized version of the "static snow" you see when tuning into a station that doesn't exist on a UHF antenna television. Also, icons in Chrome such as web sites "favorite icons" or favicon.ico (the icons that appear in the URL bar and bookmarks) will be scrambled in the same fashion , at first , until the actual icon is loaded.
Between this, my menu bar and finder icons not displaying, and being unable to boot into safe mode, I'm getting quite ******. I have no idea what the **** is going on with my Macbook Pro. The issue of the scrambled icons actually existed prior to installing an SSD and doing a fresh install of Mountain Lion. I may end up throwing in the towl and re-installing the operating system but I'm sure SOMETHING will happen. It seems the latest update, 10.8.2, is absolute garbage.
What the ****, Apple? And I really don't want to take the computer to the morons at the Apple Store. They are not "geniuses" by any measure.

    Hi:
Once again I need to call on the aid of others with more detailed knowledge of the spry frameworks, particularly the Spry Menu Widget 2.0 (vers. 1.0) developed by Adobe labs.
I have posted the site to http://www.aclco.org/testing/index.html.  You will see that it works beautifully, thanks to the help of many contributors, except in IE 6.0, where, when the sub menus become visible and drop down, it causes all page elements (divs) to be pushed down to create the necessary room to accommodate the drop down.  The natural overlap of the sub-menu over pre-existing content doesn't seem to overlay properly.
It does this on all pages, and not just those which present flash sideshows.  And as I say it is peculiar to IE 6.
I have followed the tutorial provided by David Powers in deploying the widget and have not altered the spry skin css or the basic css.  Any changes (affecting padding, etc. and adding of background images where created using the widget browser and supplemented in the css added to the template page.  The "add-on" css was then added to the general style sheet governing the whole site layout.
I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem, if there are any work arounds or hacks that anyone is aware of, or any other suggestions that might help.
I haven't been able to preview this on a free standing PC using IE6, but was able to reproduce the problem on 2 cross browser testing services employing a "live mode".  I renders properly until the sub-menus are called upon to become visible, and then the problem manifests.
Your assistance will be greatly appreciated.
    Sincerely,
    Steve Webster
    Attach.
Please note:  Attached are the relevant excerpts from the customized style sheet as amended from the spry widget browser:
/*  -- Begins Spry Menu Widget 2.0 (1.0) Horizontal menu bar Custom styles --  */
    /* BeginOAWidget_Instance_2141544: #MenuBar */
/* Settable values for skinning a Basic menu via presets. If presets are not sufficient, most skinning should be done in
these rules, with the exception of the images used for down or right pointing arrows, which are in the file SpryMenuBasic.css
These assume the following widget classes for menu layout (set in a preset)
.MenuBar - Applies to all menubars - default is horizontal bar, all submenus are vertical - 2nd level subs and beyond are pull-right.
.MenuBarVertical - vertical main bar; all submenus are pull-right.
You can also pass in extra classnames to set your desired top level menu bar layout. Normally, these are set by using a preset.
They only apply to horizontal menu bars:
MenuBarLeftShrink - The menu bar will be horizontally 'shrinkwrapped' to be just large enough to hold its items, and left aligned
MenuBarRightShrink - Just like MenuBarLeftShrink, but right aligned
MenuBarFixedLeft - Fixed at a specified width set in the rule '.MenuBarFixedLeft', and left aligned.
MenuBarFixedCentered -  - Fixed at a specified width set in the rule '.MenuBarFixedCentered',
and centered in its parent container.
MenuBarFullwidth - Grows to fill its parent container width.
In general, all rules specified in this file are prefixed by #MenuBar so they only apply to instances of the widget inserted along
with the rules. This permits use of multiple MenuBarBasic widgets on the same page with different layouts. Because of IE6 limitations,
there are a few rules where this was not possible. Those rules are so noted in comments.

/* IE6 rules - you can delete these if you do not want to support IE6 */
/* A note about multiple classes in IE6.
    * Some of the rules above use multiple class names on an element for selection, such as "hover" (MenuItemHover) and "has a subMenu" (MenuItemWithSubMenu),
    * giving the selector '.MenuItemWithSubMenu.MenuItemHover'.
    * Unfortunately IE6 does not support using mutiple classnames in a selector for an element. For a selector such as '.foo.bar.baz', IE6 ignores
    * all but the final classname (here, '.baz'), and sets the specificity accordingly, counting just one of those classs as significant. To get around this
    * problem, we use the plugin in SpryMenuBarIEWorkaroundsPlugin.js to generate compound classnames for IE6, such as 'MenuItemWithSubMenuHover'.
    * Since there are a lot of these needed, the plugin does not generate the extra classes for modern browsers, and we use the CSS2 style mutltiple class
    * syntax for that. Since IE6 both applies rules where
    * it should not, and gets the specificity wrong too, we have to order rules carefully, so the rule misapplied in IE6 can be overridden.
    * So, we put the multiple class rule first. IE6 will mistakenly apply this rule.  We follow this with the single-class rule that it would
    * mistakenly override, making sure the  misinterpreted IE6 specificity is the same as the single-class selector, so the latter wins.
    * We then create a copy of the multiple class rule, adding a '.SpryIsIE6' class as context, and making sure the specificity for
    * the selector is high enough to beat the single-class rule in the "both classes match" case. We place the IE6 rule at the end of the
    * css style block to make it easy to delete if you want to drop IE6 support.
    * If you decide you do not need IE6 support, you can get rid of these, as well as the inclusion of the SpryMenuBarIEWorkaroundsPlugin.js script.
    * The 'SpryIsIE6' class is placed on the HTML element by  the script in SpryMenuBarIEWorkaroundsPlugin.js if the browser is Internet Explorer 6. This avoids the necessity of IE conditional comments for these rules.

    .SpryIsIE6 #MenuBar .SubMenu .SubMenu  /* IE6 selector  */{
margin-left: -0px; /* Compensates for at least part of an IE6 "double padding" version of the "double margin" bug */
    /* EndOAWidget_Instance_2141544 */
/* Ends Spry Menu Bar Widget 2.0 (1.0) Horizontal Menu Custom styles */

I have systematically reviewed the tutorial of David Powers on the Spry Menu bar 2.0, and recreated the process in a methodical process - making one change at a time, and then checking each step on a cross browser testing server, and have found, quite to my amazement that what seems to be causing the problem of the "gap" in IE 6 is by removing the customized styles from the head of the individual pages, and placing them in CSS stylesheet that governs the entire site.
I find this quite inexplicable.  When the customized CSS rules governing the menu bar are situated in a separate stylesheet, the page renders well enough for any of the "modern" browsers, but won't render in IE 6.  All that I get is a horizontal menu with drop downs, but none of the styling (specifically background colours, background images, etc.) that are called for in the stylesheet and that otherwise appear when rendered by other browsers.
I realize that this sounds strange, but I was wondering if anyone had experienced this phenomenon, or could offer any explanation.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • My apps won't launch & menu bar missing all top left icons!!!

A strange concurrence of multiple problems:
I am a pretty advanced user and have an iBook G4/1.33 GHz running Tiger 10.4.8, but I am having trouble with my PowerMac G4/500 MHz running 10.3.9 right now. I keep my PowerMac in Panther since it is almost 7 years old and I only have Tiger on my iBook disc.
Suddenly a few things started to happen at once yesterday:
    1) NONE of the top right menu bar icons (OS 9 status, modem status, iChat, monitors, AirPort, Volume, clock, etc. show up upon log-in or restart.
    2) Virtually NONE of my apps will launch from the Dock or the Finder. They bounce a few times then give up, with no error message.
I peformed successful repairs booting from both the OS X Panther disc and TechTool Deluxe. Although recommended, I can't create a TEST User because System Prefs won't launch, can't repair permissions from the problematic drive because Disk Utility won't launch, and I can't clear out caches because Cocktail won't launch.
I made sure the Application Support Folder in my Home Library had read/write permissions for me and applied to all enclosing folders as suggested. I tried trashing the com.apple.ActivityMonitor.plist preference in my Home Library also as suggested. However, it wouldn't allow me to remove the Launch Services file in the Caches folder of the main Library Folder as I also read here in the discussions.
Aside from successfully running disc repairs from the startup disc and TechTool, I tried repairing permissions from the startup CD as well (since couldn't launch any apps like Disk Utility from regular startup drive). Every time I try to repair in this manner though, after a minute it tells me "Disk Utility lost connection with Disk Managment" and I must quit and relaunch Disk Utility. However, same thing happens when I do, for both my drives running copies of OS X 10.3.9.
Only thing I can think of is to do an Archive/Reinstall of one of the two OS X systems on two different drives. But does anyone else have a clue what is causing this or what I need to try??? I read similar stories on here but nothing will all these symptoms at once.
I would REALLY appreciate some input, thanks!!!

    Menu Bar Problems ..........
Check the following link for OS X troubleshooting steps. When doing so, following all steps in the order provided:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/repairprocess.html
1 If resetting permissions doesn't help, you may have a corrupt preference file... Delete....
    Delete ~/Library/Caches (folder)
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.systemuiserver.xxx.plist
where 'xxx' is a 12 digit (hexadecimal) numeric string
    • Then log out and back in again. You may need to go to System Preferences to put back the menu items you need to display.
    • Removing systemuiserver.plist will cause the right half of the menubar back
    its original pristine default state.
    2. Check Preferences Thoroughly;
    - Navigate to ~/Library and drag the "Preferences" folder to the desktop.
    - Restart and test your applications.
    • If this does not work, move the "Preferece" folder back to ~/Library
    • If this works, delete the old preferences folder. (You'll have to go through some of your System Preferences and apps to set the preferences back to how you like them).
    3. Navigate to ~/Library and drag the "Fonts" folder to the desktop.
    - Restart and test your applications.
    - If they work start adding the fonts back few at a time.
( A likely suspect is Time RO, also if you do not use Classic you can trash the classic fonts.)
    4. Check Permissions Inside Home Folder
    - Navigate to ~/Library.
    - Get Info (Command + i) on the "Applications Support" folder.
    - Open the "Ownership & permissions" flippy triangle.
    - Make sure you are the owner, with "read and write" access.
    - Click on "apply to all"
    - If this is correct, open the "Applications Support" folder and do the same procedure (Command+I) for the folders with the names of the applications you are having trouble with.
Note...The reason to check this is because repairing permissions with Disk Utility doesn't touch permissions inside your home folder.
    • Create a new User.... go to System Preferences/ Accounts and click on "+" at bottom left of window..... and test the apps in this new account if they work the problem is isolated to your User
    (~ means your home directory)

  • My i tunes does not have a ringtones option on the menu bar or under preferences.  How do I get this folder to show up?

I am trying to use a short mp3 file as a ringtone.  So far every website has told me that all I have to do is drag the file into the "ringtones" folder that is located in the menu bar on the left side of I-tunes.  I don't have this folder.  Again, every website tells me to simply go to "Edit" and then "Preferences" and to click on the ringtones box and then the folder will magically appear.  My itunes is the latest 10.5 version but somehow I don't have this option.  What is wrong with my i tunes?

Yep... strange move on Apple's part.
The quick solution would be to get hold of a Concert from MS 2 with the right layout etc, and then open it in your MS3.
Slower would be to make your own layout using Grouped Controls for the pedal layout you'd like, then assign to incoming MIDI as needed (Switches etc), then map to the effects controls in Edit mode.
You'll need to be careful how you setup the Screen Control backgrounds.
