Strange microphone-headphone confusion

Hi macbook users,
My external microphone stopped working from one day to the next. I thought it was the battery and purchased a new one, but after plugging it in and testing with garageband, no wound was picked up (except sounds uttered close to the computer).
After testing to figure out what was wrong (I started with the microphone, which works on a camera) and garageband (the built-in input option never appeared), and a PRAM reset (suggested online for a similar problem) I ended up looking at the sound preferences (finally).
Here is where it gets interesting :
I noticed that the microphone being plugged in or not had no impact on what the computer recognized. Basically, in System Preferences > Sound > Input, it always just says "Internal Microphone - Built In".
BUT, what is really interesting is that in Output, when I plug the microphone in, it switches from "Internal Speakers - Built In" to "Headphones - Headphone Port".
Which means that in the past 48 hours, my computer stopped recognizing my microphone as such, and now thinks it's a headphones set.
I cannot find any trace of this problem on the Internet.
Does anyone have an idea what happened, and how one could go about solving this?
Thanks,
Lawrence

I'm having a problem identical to this, which started when I updated my software this morning, including the latest version of the Linux kernel.

  • Connecting Case Microphone/Headphone Jacks To The Sound Blas

I just got a new computer with a Foxconn TLA-776 case that has microphone/headphone jacks on the front. There are 7 seperate plugs that come from these jacks. Ground, Right Out, Right Return, Left Out, Left Return, Mic Power, and Mic In. I tried plugging these into the white connector on the card with 0 pins, but they didn't fit correctly. Is there somewhere else these connectors are supposed to plug into on the card? They were originally plugged into the motherboard's onboard sound.

You didn't mention which card you have there but as an example, this is for Audigy 2 Zs. Arrangement for pins may vary between different models of cards. For example on Audigy 2 (SB0244) -->
    - Analog Ground
2 - Analog Headphone Out Left
3 - Analog Headphone Out Right
4 - Audio Backpanel Mute -- short to ground to mute the backpanel (when headphones are plugged in)
    ... (i.e. pins 3 and 4 were swapped vs. A2Zs arrangement)
    Didn't connect the mic.
Here is another link covering subject (st link seem not to work right now.

  • Switch Microphone / Headphone jack on X-Fi Titanium

    Hi
I've recently had problems with the headphone jack on my pc case. My microphone jack works fine, is there an option with the X-Fi Titanium to switch the two over so I can use the Microphone jack with my headphones? I've noticed this option with my onboard audio but want to use my X-Fi!
Out of curiosity, how can I fix my headphone jack? My headpones seem to be able to wiggle when they're plugged in. Have not idea how this has? happened though!
    Thanks for any help!

  • Combo microphone/headphone issues.

While this has undoubtedly been addressed numerous times, I'm not quite sure how to word it in a way that would pick up a search for it. I am having issues with audio quality while using a combination headphone/microphone in my sound card's audio jack. When I use a non combo headphone, the audio is fine. Interestingly enough, when I hold down the microphone button, the audio corrects itself. Is there a work around for this?

You will need an adapter most likely for your issue to split the single headphone/microphone into two discrete outputs. What model are you using? perhaps this will help.

  • Satellite Pro A200-18P - microphone / headphone jack not working with Vista

    Hi,
I have installed Windows Vista onto this laptop which was originally an XP, but I have not got the headphone jack working.
How do I turn it on or do I have to download it from toshiba website?

    Hi
First of all you have to check if there is an special BIOS for Vista.
As far as I know some A200 series needs BIOS which was released especially for Vista OS.
I think the notebook needs Realtek sound driver.
Therefore in control panel you should see the Realtek HD audio manager.
Go there and you will see the mic and headphone jack on the right.
Click right there and check if there are some settings which have to be enabled.

  • Hp mini 1001TU. How to plug a complete headset (microphone + headphones) ?

    Hi everybody,
I wonder how I can use an external full headset (mic + earphones) on my hp mini 1001TU (for skype and other applications...).
Indeed :  there is only one jack plug. It is used for sound input or sound output, depending what we plug in it.
There are also 2 usb plugs.
Is there any solution, any specific headset available?
    Thanks a lot.
    Apakabar,

You can use a USB digital headset. There are lots of options such as...

Bluetooth may be an option as well.

  • Strange Microphone problem on iPhone 4S

Okay at first I thought the external mic was shot, but I did some testing.  The Mic does work on speaker phone or Facetime calls.  However it does work to ask Siri information and record voice memos.

    Using Keynote Remote with Bluetooth
When a Wi-Fi connection is unavailable you can use Keynote Remote with Bluetooth to control your Keynote slideshow from one iOS device to another (iPad, iPhone, iPod touch). However, slides may take longer to appear on Keynote Remote when connected via Bluetooth. You cannot use Keynote Remote via Bluetooth with a Mac.
The following steps use Keynote Remote on an iPhone to control a Keynote presentation on an iPad via Bluetooth.
iPhone: Go to Settings > General > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth ON.
iPad: Go to Settings > General > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth ON.
    iPad: Open a Keynote presentation.
iPhone: Open the Keynote Remote app. If you have previously paired your iPhone or iPad, you can immediately begin to control your slideshow from your iPhone by tapping Play Slideshow. If this is the first time pairing with these iOS devices, refer to the steps in "Linking Keynote Remote to Another iOS Device," above.
Note: If your iPhone displays the message "No connection available. Both devices must be connected to a Wi-Fi network or have Bluetooth turned on," continue with the steps above because you may still be able to use Keynote Remote with Bluetooth.

  • Does the headphone jack include microphone connections like on a smartphone?

I've got a new 15" MacBook Pro (w/Retina) and it has a single headphone jack on the left side.
I want to know if that jack supports both regular stereo headphones and stereo headsets with a built in microphone, like a smarphone's headset jack does?
In other words, if I used an adapter for a stereo headset with microphone to feed them together in a single four contact 3.5mm plug, will the MacBook use both the speakers and microphone in the headset?

Well, I've been trying to research it and I get the impression that it does, based on the Tech Specs for the MacBook Pro:
    Audio
    Stereo speakers
    Dual microphones
    Headphone port
Support for Apple iPhone headset with remote and microphone
Support for audio line out (digital/analog)
Now, exactly what that means, I'm not sure...  Is there circuitry in that jack that adapts to digital or audio line out as well as pre-amped headset volume, microphone, and remote too?  I guess I need to look at the iPhone headset to see how it is put together and whether I can use my own headset, or if I need to use Apple's...  (I suspect the latter).

  • Ipad microphone and headphone splitter

Does anyone know of a decent microphone/headphone splitter that will let me listen to tracks while I record new ones?

I have not used it myself, but seen it recommended: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004SP0WAQ
You might get better quality from your microphone if you use an audio interface, however, and turn an USB port into an audio port.

I read previous threads and answers about the impedance (from Tiger) . Forgive me, just want to be sure and place my questions:?. for my Audigy SE SB0570 the microphone impedance is ~ 600 ohm, right?2. what is the approximate range of microhones impedance to work moreless correctly with Audigy ? - say?from 400 ohm to 800 ohms? Will be grateful for the comment.

John, thank you for the quick answer. At the moment I am using cheap EasyTouch microphone + headphones. My friends I talk on Skype say my voice is good quality. What is strange to me, the microphone I use with the Audigy SE has impedance?2200 ohm !http://www.easytouch.pl/product6074.PL.html?After I know the Audigy microphone impedance is 600 ohms, I am quite confused - it should not work well with 2200 ohm, but somehow it does.Could you comment it, please?Grtgs.

  • HP Mini 110-1030CA headphone audio jack: low-quality

So, the headphone audio jack seems to only give me low-quality unintelligible sound. I've seen various posts about installing the Vista version of the IDT driver, but that didn't work. I don't mean that it didn't solve my problem, I mean it didn't install at all.
So my question is this: has anyone got a defninitive solution for this? Or should i just keep fiddling with it until i give up and take it back to the retailer and make them deal with it?
Thanks. Any help is much appreciated.

I have a HP Mini 110 and I need the pinout for the microphone headphone jack
Is it the same as a iPOD?
Why is it so hard to find out how to plug a Mic and Headphone in?
I am in fact looking to hook up my Mini to my ham radio and I need to find or make a 1/8" phone plug for audio in and a 1/8" phone plug audio out female plug to the 4 pin 3.5 mm audio plug on the mini cable.

  • Odd Microphone Problem

I am attempting to feed audio from an external source to my iPad through the microphone/headphone jack. I have an adaptor cable with a 4-conductor plug that I use successfully with Skype by plugging in a small microphone/headset. However, when I attempt to feed audio to the iPad through this same adaptor, the audio is not routed to the apps in question, such as Skype and a recording application that I use. Instead, the iPad external microphone remains on.
I have tested the adaptor and the four conductor jack. I know the audio is present on the proper section of the 4 conductor jack, but I do not understand why the iPad does not respond to it. If I plug in my headset, all is well.
What "signals" the iPad to switch to an external microphone input? Just the fact that the plug is connected is apparently not sufficient. Or is the external audio level too high, causing the iPad to ignore the input?
    Steve

Yes, I'm using the correct plug.
Turns out I have found the answer. Apparently the input device must "look" like a real microphone to the operating system. Otherwise, it will not reroute the audio to the application. In my case, the device has an isolation transformer, which looked like a dead short to the iPad. I added some resistance in series and that did the trick.

  • No Audio From Headphones When Plugged Into The Jack

I have plugged numerous amounts of earphones into my only headphone jack. I know that the earphones work, because when they are plugged into other devices, they work just fine. But, when any earphones are plugged into the headphone jack, I only hear sound
from my laptop speakers that are built in. The sound worked the very first time I plugged in my earphones, but now they don't work.
