Strange Monitor Colors

Have Eizo CE210W Monitor calibrated using Eizo software and a SpyderPro2. In CS3, Bridge, and Camera Raw, the shadow areas in pure grayscale black and white pictures are dark olive green rather than pure black. This is true for both jpg and RAW. However, the same photo open at the same time in Microsoft Photo Viewer is pure black, no green. Workspace in Photoshop is set to Adobe RGB. Any ideas?

When my monitor "entered" my office, it looked already very close in it's uncalibrated state.
I had to convince myself that the Color Navigator actually uploaded the profile to the monitor by deliberately creating a corrupt calibration.
I put a light cyan theatre floodlight filter between the screen and the colorimeter.
And yes, I then had a heart rhythm disturbing magenta screen staring at me. So it really calibrated.
I quickly recalibrated this purple softbox into my familiar Eizo monitor.
You had ColorNavigator 5? I know it exists, but in the process of getting it downloaded it's always version 3. Maybe 3 is the highest for XP.
Rob
Edit: you can see which profile PS uses by looking in the Color Settings drop down menu. Next to monitor. Don't click on it, or it becomes your Working Space.

• The monitor colors were abnormal

My Mac air has an external monitor, Dell u2414h, connected through DP cable ( Mini-DP to DP). In these days, I encountered a monitor color issue, might be a bug or a hardware problem, maybe someone have this experience to confirm that, thanks in advance.
the process:
1. The Mac air connected to the external monitor, Both of the internal an external monitors are used normally;
2. closed the Mac air lid, the external monitor was still opening at this time and the OS X system can be operated normally;
3. I left the notebook to do other things;
4. About five minutes later the external monitor went to sleep;
5. More than one hour later, I came back, the OS X system was sleep, opened the lid;
6. Both of the internal and external monitors' colors were abnormal, some application icons and the desktop wallpaper had red blocks; These red blocks on the desktop wallpaper didn't disappear automatcally, must to replace a new wallpaper;
The system.log has "GPU hang:" and "Trying restart GPU ..." messages;
The loginwindow crashed, and saved a crash report;
This issue occured several times;

• Touchsmart monitor colors suddenly reverse

A few days after the trial period for Windows 8 expired I booted up to find that the monitor colors were reversed. What was black was now white, etc. I thought it was something Microsoft had done to provoke me to hurry up and buy 8, but after removing 8 and installing Linux Mint the problem continued. Someone suggested that it might be the video card since, they claim, Touchsmarts tend to cause the video card to overheat. Has anyone had this problem and how was it solved?

• Monitor Colors wrong following a re-install of 10.3

I've fixed this once, a year ago, but have forgotten how!
I have had to re-install 10.3 due to some other problems but with this fresh system, the monitor colors are not quite right. For example, the finder icon in the dock is purple, the label colors are all wrong, not only in color but have blocks of different color in them.
I've messed with display preferences but cannot fix it. As I said this happened when I upgraded to 10.3 from 10.2.8 a year ago and I fixed it. Looking at the display preferences on the system where the color is OK and this one, I can see no difference. Calibrating the monitor did not seem to help.
Any ideas appreciated.

I haven't had this exact problem but on a couple of occasions, when my normal user setup wasn't behaving quite correctly, I started up from a new account, copied the preferences (HD/Users/UserAccount/Library/Preferences) to a new folder at the root level of my hard drive, restarted as my standard user, then used the preferences from the new account to overwrite those in my standard account. Sometimes you won't be able to overwrite them because they are in use; then just move the ones that can't be replaced to the trash, move the new ones to your user account preferences folder, restart and empty the trash.
Hope this works for you.

• Monitor color vs. sRGB

Hello!
So I finally calibrated my Dell U2410 monitor with a colormunki display and the results were very good. The only thing tho is that when I upload an illustration made in PS CC to, say, deviantart or imgur or whatever, the colors are a bit of. Generally it's the warmer part of the spectrum that gets a bit washed out for some reason. I solved this by setting my color settings in PS to Monitor Color instead of the standard sRGB and now it looks perfect. My questions is: is there some downside to using Monitor color? Or will I run in to trouble if I, say, need to print something? I guess I need to convert my old .psd files to my new color setting?
Thankful to any answer!

is there some downside to using Monitor color?
Apart from making a mockery of Color Management?
• Basically you are circumventing Color Management that way – instead of creating images in one (or a few) RGB Color Spaces whose display is corrected according to the monitor profile you are passing the RGB values to the screen directly (as long as the image’s profile is the current monitor profile).
• Please consider that a monitor profile is but supposed to represent the "current" state of your ageing/changing monitor and and you are expected to create a monitor profile anew at intervals and subsequently the images you create would have many different Color Spaces as time goes on.
If you base Color Management decisions on the display of images in non-Color Managed applications (as you don’t mention which browser you used to display the pages mentioned I suspect they may be or even whether you embedded the profile in the images) you may want to do some more reading on the issue.

• Monitor colors dimmed after receiving a "fatal error" messag

I was going to see if I could backup my quickbooks into a windows mode. After it started to gather information, I chickened out and pressed control-period. My monitor colors are now all faded. Anyone know how to fix this?

You need to delete this application from your palm. Click on the Home button on your palm. Click on the top right where you see the time and "app" will come up with a drop-down list. Click on Delete and then select the application you want to delete.
When prompted, "are you sure you want to delete...," click on "yes."
I hope this is helpful!

• Is monitor calibration the same as setting color profile in System Preferences Monitor Color?

I understand monitor calibration using something llike X-Rite or Gretag, but what about the sRGB/Adobe RGB/Generic thing in System preferences>Monitor>Color? Is the latter for printing purposes? What should I select when doing post processing on Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop Elements?

{quote:}After working on my photographs in Lightroom and setting them to Jpegs, I take them to a printshop (semi professional). Would the personal setting on my iMac make any differences to him for printing???{quote}
Yes your Display Profile will slightly affect your finished product, but if that RGB profile is working for you then don't try and fix it. However if you do professional or semi professional work, then you might want to consider using professional calibration tools to calibrate your display.
See > http://www.lightroomkillertips.com/
{quote:}What do you use most on your iMac?{quote}
I only do amateur photo work and then print them on an Epson printer. When editing and printing photos, I use the Epson sRGB Display Profile that was installed along with my Epson software and always get great results.

• ****yellowish color shift in LIGHTROOM: disabling monitor color profile in LR?

Hi all,
I would love to know if there is a way to ***disable the monitor (color) profile**** in LR.
WHY?
Cause all my pictures seems yellowish in LR, and not anywhere else (firefox, i.e, photoshop, xnview, etc...)
I solved the same problem in PHOTOSHOP, this way :
when loading images in photoshop, during starting up, I got this very message :
" The monitor profile 'LG L245WP' appears to be defective. Please rerun your monitor calibration software. "
with two possible options :
"Ignore profile" or "use anyway"
Then if I use "Ignore profile" everything is fine!
If I select "use anyway" --> Wrong, all my pictures are yellowish.
That's why I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW, pleaaaaaase if I can do the same in LR.
I personnally didn't find, or what else I should do ?! Knowing that I do not have a ...too expensive!... calibration tool , and my monitor is a LG, L245WP.
----> Thanx sooo much for your help.
I would love to use LR, but this way I can't...
>kiwiii
form PARIS france ( excuse my english level).
NB : I read 2 threads here , but didn't find my solution : http://forums.adobe.com/thread/414524
and : http://forums.adobe.com/thread/415180
NB : in one of these I downloaded this RGB picture :
http://forums.adobe.com/servlet/JiveServlet/download/2161301-16291/Farbprofil-Kontrolle_re dgreenblue.jpg
where mostly the white in LR appears to be yellow.
Looks fine anywhere else, and in photoshop, if "Ignore profile" is selected

DdeGannes, Sean : thanx.
I went to my vista profil , added a profile in relation with my screen... but then which on should I select , between the several sRGB options :
- WCS profile :  sRGB     a file named wsRBG.cdmp
or
- ICC profile : sRGB IEC 61966-2.1 ?
( of course I have many more... but....none of the others are sRGB profiles )
Then have you both a calibrator, and you both did all the color "chain" from CAMERA to PRINTER ?
I am asking.... cause all these adjustments + buying a calibrator seems tough to me to manage/achieve.
You know :  I'm not a professional ...
To me, non - pro, it looks even more dangerous to do so than leaving evreything in default mode & presets...
Should I do something wrong...
NO?
Moreover I mean : this is odd that my computer , or/AND (?) screen ,
doesn't have a "default setting" which would be suitable in LR , at least which no colour shift !
( I just change my LG screen mode to 5600K etc... and still I have the same yellowish gap in LR )
Why would my color management just be wrong in LR or Photoshop ?
Doesn't this light something I miss to you both, maybe professionals?
If I read you fine, + the other website... everything is kind of automatic now in every softwares... even xnview, firefox, (not i.e.) etc...
so why just LR + photoshop, would be mistaken on my computer,
and Firefox, Xnview, CANON softwares, Painter, ... all show the right profile & colors ???? This is sooooooo weird....to me.
I mean I got the the point that my whole color management is unshure...
but it nevertheless it should BE THE SAME through all my softwares... NO ?
Isn't there a general ADOBE setting somewhere, that might be bugged instead?
I still think , according to that, that we are missing something.
Sorry to bother you with my thoughts....
kiwiii ( paris - france )
ps/ Does really Photoshop detect the changes I would do directly on my screen ?
Because when I switch from sRGB, to 6500 K , 9300K or user... on my screen,
I STILL HAVE the PHOTOSHOP ERROR message :
" The monitor profile 'LG L245WP' appears to be defective. Please rerun your monitor calibration software. "
I mean PHOTSHOP doesn't seem to notice (give a damn) on any change I make !?
As for the rest of my computer I never changed any COLOR PROFILE anywhere... So how do people do without a calibrator to use LR ?
Is it possible at least?
Is my screen (i thought so good) totally bugged, if none of my color profile is "ok" for photoshop & LR ?
THANX AGAIN FOR READING and helping me...

• Monitor color profile, fast switch script

Hi everyone,
I often switch between two monitor color profile, the default one "LED Cinema Display" and the calibrated one, named with the date of calibration (ex:"22June2011").
Is there a way to fast switch between this two with a script, without entering in monitor preferences and move to color tab every time? Maybe set an icon on the menu bar... Or an icon on the dock...
Thanks,
Filippo

More important, the question is not about color management, is about scripting.
Otherwise we're just wasting words, that doesn't seem the right place to speak about profiling...
Do you want help or not? What you're asking has everything to do profiling and color management. You're going about the use of profiles for your monitor completely wrong.
Any profile is an image of how that, and only that device displays, captures or reproduces color. The only monitor profile that makes any difference is one you create. Since you're using i1Profiler, then you must be using an i1 Pro to profile the monitor.
The monitor profile you made with i1Profiler is the only one you should be using. It is an exact description of the white point, black point, gamut and color range of the monitor you are looking at. The canned profile has nothing to do with the monitor in front of you. It's a generic average that is just short of completely useless since it is not a direct description of the monitor you own. Forget the "LED Cinema Display" profile, or any other canned profile on the system.
I can only assume you're trying to simulate CMYK color in Photoshop. To do that, your start with the monitor profile you have. To create a meaningful CMYK simulation, you need to create your own inks file to use as your CMYK color space in Photoshop.

• Monitor Color Profile Changes after FUS

My monitor color profile changes after fast switching users, and then I cannot change it back in the prefs for display-color. Attempting to choose (restore) my chosen calibrated color profile does not work.
The only solution is restarting. Loging out and back in does not fix it, only a restart.
What could be causing this?

• CS6 Monitor Color Settings

Hi There,
Just wondering in the photoshop CS6 Color settings, "Edit\Color Settings" should the profile be set to monitor color if I have a calibrated monitor, or one of the other settings such as the default.

No.
It is definitely not a good idea to set your monitor profile as your RGB working space. I would choose one of the Europe or North America Presets.

• Please help with strange monitor/Lightroom 4 interaction problem

I bought a Dell Ultrasharp U3011 yesterday, and I'm now facing a very strange problem. It's sort of related to the common discussed issue of Lightroom's color management, but there is a twist here. I'll explain.
The monitor I had been using (and still have) was a Samsung SyncMaster 244T. I had no problems at all with it.
With the U3011, I've run into this problem:
-When I view files in Lightroom 4, the colors are muted and contrast low. The same files seen in Xnview, ACDSee Pro (with the color management turned off), Digital Photo Professional (colorspace set to sRGB), are much more vivid. In Photoshop, if I use the default color setting, it looks muted like Lightroom (I'm guessing because Adobe products have default color profile set to ProPhoto RGB), but if I set the color profile to the monitor's profile, it becomes vivid and matches the other software I mentioned. If I use any other profile such as sRGB IEC81966-2.1, ProPhoto RGB, Adobe RGB, etc, it doesn't match the other software I mentioned. This is strange because the other ones match each other because they are set to sRGB, but in Photoshop, even if I set the color profile to sRGB, it still doesn't match.
-In Lightroom 4, even if I use Soft Proofing, nothing changes. It's as if Soft Proofing is broken--it doesn't do anything, no matter what color profile I choose.
-Now, here's the twist. I didn't have any of these problems when I use the 244T. This leads me to assume that the problem is how the U3011 is interacting with Lightroom. I did a quick comparison of opening up the same image on both monitors in ACDSee Pro, and they looked identical. (At this point, I had the U3011's preset set to sRGB. This is the only preset that makes the U3011 look identical to the 244T).
Next, I did an experiment, and I was very surprised by what happened. This is what I did:
With both monitors as a dual display setup, I turned on Before/After comparison in Lightroom (made sure both version had the same setting and look identical by copying the After's setting to Before). I then moved Lightroom's window so that one photo is seen on the U3011, and the other shows up on the 244T. And OMIGOD, they looked different! Why is this happening? I've already established that the same image looks identical on both monitors when viewed with ACDSee Pro, but in Lightroom, they looked different on each monitor.
And then things got even more weird. When I dragged the Lightroom window fully to one monitor or the other, Lightroom actually started changing the colors right before my eyes as it responded to which monitor was displaying which photo! Lightroom was somehow interacting with the monitor in real-time. So if the Before looked muted on U3011 and the After looked vivid on the 244T, when I drag the whole window into 244T, the muted Before will stay muted for about a second or so, and then it'll suddenly change and become identical to After. And when I did the reverse (drag the window into U3011), the reverse also happened--the vivid After will stay vivid on U3011 for about a second or so, and then it would suddenly change and become muted. Lightroom was identifying each monitor's color profile setting and changing the images according to which monitor was doing the displaying, and when the images were split between the two monitors, Lightroom was slitting them into two different settings to match whichever monitor is displaying which side.
So what the hell does that all mean, and what can I do to get Lightroom to display the photos so that they look the same as on all the other software I mentioned (so I don't have to play the guessing game of editing the images, export them out to other software to check how they turned out). Also, remember that I didn't have this problem with the 244T--Lightroom displayed the photos the same way as the other software I mentioned. The problem right now is that the U3011 is somehow causing Lightroom to display the photos differently, and no color profile presets in the OSD control can make them match.
I need to solve this problem, or else my last resort would be to return the U3011 and try another brand/model and see if that helps.
Any ideas?

Yes, that's basically sensible advice you got there (but I was more succinct ).
An important point that was mentioned over there is that you must not confuse document/source profile with monitor profile. They are both links in the color management chain, but they serve different purposes. The document profile defines the colors in a standard color space. The monitor profile describes the monitor's own native color space - its response to the RGB numbers it's fed. So one is translated into the other, by the application on the fly, through a normal profile conversion, and that way the colors appear on-screen as intended.
If those two profiles/color spaces are roughly similar, as they would be in the case of an sRGB document displayed on a standard gamut display - then you can get by without color management. It won't look too far off. But a wide gamut monitor changes the rules, because its native color space is not similar to sRGB, it's much closer to Adobe RGB.
Anyway, this is what color management is about. Any profile can be translated into any other. So in this context it doesn't really matter what color space the document is in - as long as you have a good monitor profile it will display correctly (within practical limitations). Lightroom is a sort of special case because its internal working color space is not one of the standard ones, instead it's a modified ProPhoto space with linear gamma. But the basic principle is exactly the same: source profile > monitor profile.
Just to go a little more in-depth while I'm at it: When you calibrate a display you actually do two separate things. You first calibrate it to a more or less standardized response. But that's just a linear one-dimensional correction. It does nothing about how color is actually reproduced, how red is red for instance. The calibration is global and affects everything system-wide because it's read into the video card or monitor hardware.
Then, once calibrated, a monitor profile is made. This is a full, complete and accurate description of the monitor's behavior, in three-dimensional color space. The precision level is much higher. This profile is used, by color managed applications like Lightroom and Photoshop, to display the image.
Other applications that are not color managed will simply ignore this profile, and send the RGB numbers straight through to the display, unmodified. With a standard gamut monitor (and an sRGB document) the difference won't be too dramatic and you may not notice it unless you look closely. But a wide gamut monitor will make the difference jump out immediately.

• MacBook Pro, dual Monitor color shift with Photoshop CS4, OS 10.5.5

I'm observing a strange behavior: With PS CS3 i could just drag an image from
the laptop monitor to the external Eizo and the color would adjust instantly, with
consistent color (All monitors calibrated, no settings have changed). The same applies to Lightroom
2.0 too. Now when i do the same move with the same image opened in PS CS4 the color does not
adjust to match but stays the same and the result is a oversaturated image on the external monitor.
Any thoughts? Thanks, Mark

It should adjust to the display the same as CS3.
Have you tried turning off OpenGL image display?
(it could be a bug, or a driver issue)

• CMYK images: strange monitor display & and printing

I tried the way Pages 2 handles CMYK images today and found out some strange things.
My problem: monitor display
CMYK .jpg files are displayed inverted on screen like a negative - black is white and white is black. Layouting basicly rendered useless. Is there a work arround ?
Solved: Printing
For printing there are at least two ways to get a decent result. Here my findings:
- Any color printers
"Print - ColorSync - Color Conversion" set to "Standard" => CMYK images get converted to RGB
"Print - ColorSync - Color Conversion" set to "Printer specific" => CMYK images stay in CMYK if printer is able to print CMYK
- use "Save to PDF" within printing dialog
Same as above, profiles tagged to images stay correct
- Adobe Acrobat Distiller
Same as above, but PDF looses recognizeable profile information. PDF workflow software does not recognize "SWOP" or "ISOcoated" by name but has "Embedded Adobe Postscript CRD Profile" instead which will create problems in workflow processing.
- Exporting "File - Export - PDF"
Profiles stay intact and are handled correctly.

Thanks Noel for the reply. Hopefully this will help.
This is how the file should look like.
This is how the file usually displays.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Strange yellow color cast after CS4 install

I just ran into a strange problem helping a friend install PS CS4. Everything seemed to go fine, but now all of a sudden his images are displayed with a strong yellow tint. I don't mean a slight color cast, I mean a STRONG yellow tint. The images appear the same in Photoshop, the Bridge, and even ACR. I re-calibrated the monitor (Gretag McBeth) and generated a new profile just be sure, but that wasn't it. The same images viewed in other applications (Picassa, opened in a browser, etc.) on the same computer display normally. This appears to be only Photoshop related. What's also interesting is that CS3 now exhibits the same problem after the CS4 install.
I reviewed all the color settings and workflow, and nothing is out of the ordinary. The Nikon raw images were imported via ACR, and opened in Photoshop with ACR workflow options set for 16 bit/Adobe RGB. Photoshop working space is Adobe RGB. I also installed the 11.0.1 update. But here are what may be a couple of clues. First, it's not just the image files that look bad. The colors are awful in the color picker in the toolbox. The entire color picker slider is almost all yellow and orange. And here's another good one. We tried importing some new raw images via the photo downloader in Bridge. With the downloader in Advanced mode, the image previews before download show the same yellow cast. But after I click the Get Photos button, the image colors appear correct as they flash on for a couple of seconds while being downloaded. This has got to be a big clue for someone. What's different about how the image is displayed during that two second preview during the actual download?
The PC hardware is a 3.2Ghz Pentium 4 Dell tower (2G ram) running XP Pro w/SP3, with a nVidia GeForce 7800 graphics card, and the screen resolution is 1024x768. I'm thinking maybe a graphics card issue or corrupted system profiles, but I'm a Mac and he's a PC so my PC troubleshooting skills are limited.
Has anyone else seen a problem like this before?? Any ideas? Thanks!
