Strange movie dimensions

Hi. I created a number of clips, all of which are 320 wide x 460 high - iPhone, portrait orientation. I imported them into iMovie.
First, I cannot see them all on the view screen; for some reason they are enlarged and not fit into the screen.
Second when I try to export the edited version using Export using QuickTime, the dimensions are all messed up. I tried using Export Size -> Custom -> 320x460 -> Fit Within Dimensions, but that just changes the size of the output; it's still 'zoomed in' and missing half of the frame.
Any suggestions?

When you import video, it will be imported in the same dimensions as the source, and it will stay that way.
When you start a project, you will be able to set the dimensions.
The EVENT files contain what you imported. You drag the parts that you want to a PROJECT to create a movie. The Project does not duplicate the stuff that is in the event. It just has pointers back to the Event files to get what it needs.

  • Movie dimensions and duration on an Airport drive

I have many movies in mp4 or m4v format.
On my internal drive, the Finder indicates movie dimensions and duration.
I had an Airport drive on which the Finder indicated these values. It crashed, and I bought the same one.
Now, on the new one, dimensions and duration are not longer shown...
    I don't understand why!

I tried many things this afternoon.
First, connect my network drive directly on my USB port. the .Spotlight directory has been rebuild very quickly, and I was able to search items and view information.
Then I reconnect it on my Airport Extreme. Dimensions disappeared.
I have "Ratatouille.m4v" on my Airport drive. I deactivated the index (mdutil -i off /Volumes/krypton), open a finder window and typed "rat". The movie was found. With the window still opened, I reactivated the index. Instantly the movie disappeared from the finder.
I've noticed another thing. First I thought it was only on movies, but it turns out that even JPEG dimensions are not available. And that's ********. It's really simple to show that kind of information, so why not? Cmd+i on a JPEG file or any media file from my network drive shows nothing! Even Windows can do that!
    Anyway. It's a bit frustrating.
The only difference between my former network drive and the new one, is that I've bought the first one during late Tiger era.
And maybe Tiger did something on the drive Snow can't.

Do you have a backup that you can restore from? Your old hard drive seems to be the problem.

  • .mov dimensions

i am trying to create .mov file from imovieHD. under share, if i choose quicktime, full quality, it gives me a dv extension, and the movie dimensions are the same size. however, i am trying to share this with the windows format and give it to someone who has trouble reading .dv. i choose quicktime, cd quality, and although i get the .mov format, the dimensions for the movie are smaller. is there anyway i can create a .mov file that are the same dimentions as my movie in imovie???
    thanks!
    amy

Windows can read Full Quality .dv files with QT for Win installed.
Another option is to export as DV-encoded full resolution AVI but you should pay attention to interlacing which iMovie HD loses when exporting via the expert settings. There are some workarounds for this. I don't know what audio codec the Win apps expect.
But those kinds of full quality DV output files are BIG. How are you going to transfer them??
The most foolproof way is to export from the Mac to a DV/D8 tape and import it on the Win box.

  • Mouse pointer disappears and makes strange movements

First: I'm afraid my English is not good enough (I speak Spanish).
    So,
Sometimes the mouse pointer disappears but it's still able to click. It reappears when I do right click. Also, sometimes the pointer have a strange behavior, like crazy movements very fast. I just wait 10 second and it work fine again. I don't know if anyone here have this problems too.

You won't believe this but just cleaning a mouse can improve performance... read the following:
How to Clean a Mechanical Mouse
This article explains when and how you should clean a mechanical mouse. It does not apply to the the Apple Pro Mouse.
You should clean a mouse if it is does not track smoothly, or if it jumps or skips. A mouse contains a small ball that must roll smoothly for the mouse to work properly. You should keep this ball free of dirt and oil by using the mouse on a clean, lint-free surface, and cleaning it occasionally.
Use the following procedure to clean a mouse:
    1. Turn off your computer.
    2. Turn the mouse upside down and rotate the plastic ring on the bottom counterclockwise to release it.
    3. Turn the mouse right side up with one hand and catch the ring and ball with your other hand.
    4. Clean the three small rollers inside the mouse with a cotton swab moistened with water. Rotate the rollers to clean all around them. If there is a build-up of material on the rollers that the cotton swab does not remove, you can use your fingernail to gently remove the material.
    5. Wash the mouse ball in soapy, warm water with a mild soap such as a dishwashing liquid if oil from your hands has collected on it. Be sure to dry the mouse ball thoroughly.
    6. Gently blow into the mouse case to remove any accumulated dust.
    7. Put the mouse ball back in the mouse case and replace the retaining ring.
If cleaning the mouse as described does not correct your issue, the mouse may need to be replaced. Have an Apple Authorized Service Provider check it for excessive wear or other failure.
If that doesn't do the trick, if this is a mouse that required 3rd party drivers, you might try reinstalling the drivers. Also, try going back to default Mouse preferences on all Users, see if makes a difference.

  • Enlarging Movie Dimensions

    Hello,
I have an swf movie with a couple scenes and content.
Recently I've been asked to enlarge the movie, ... but then I need
to center all the content on the stage. I am looking for help in
finding a setting or control or general experience on how to
enlarge / increase the dimensions of a movie from the center, not
from the top left corner. Currently if I punch in some new
dimension, the movie enlarges from the top left; isn't there some
option to enlarge it from other directions?
    Any help?
    Much appreciated.

'fraid not. But there are a few other solutions, you could
'scale' the movie to a new size using the publish settings.
OR if you don't want that, then you can use the 'Edit all
Frames' function, where you can then 'center' all of the contents
within the movie and all frames at the same time, to the new Stage
size. There has been disscusion on this process recently within the
forum, try a search for it.

  • Quick question about movie dimensions

I've got a movie that is 776 x 592 and encoded as H.264. The movie does not have an audio track. I want to cut this movie up and sync it up to a voice over file that I have as a WAV file. I want my end file to have the same dimensions (776 x 592) and hopefully not lose any quality in the video since it is a screen recording and a loss in quality will make any text appear blurry.
So, can this be done in either Final Cut Express or Final Cut Pro?
PS - My first idea was to use iMovie but I quickly realized that iMovie converts all to DV and scales the video to DVD dimensions which is not what I want.

First off, you've got to get out of the h.264 codec to something you can properly edit with. (Why in heavens name did you record in that?)
Secondly you've got to edit a sequence preset to match your screen size.
If you've got the drives to handle playing it back, I'd suggest 8-bit uncompressed. Or dvcpro50. Make sure you match the framerate. Is it progressive (probably!) or interlaced? Make sure you match that.
Drop the file into compressor, set up your parameters and give it a shot. Check back in with any issues.

  • Flow / Subtable / Movement Dimension

    Hi experts,
Can we use flow type dimension for planning application?
We are using BPC only for planning purpose. In case of Depreciation budget we need to maintain the accounts movement.
    Opening Stock             100
    Additions                 20
    Deletions                 10
    Closing Balance           110
    Average Balance           105
    Depreciation rate         12%
    Total Depreciation        12.60
The combination of account dimension and Flow dimension gives me proper value, But When I remove the flow dimension, system adds up (1002010+110 etc)all the flow dimensions figures and gives me wrong value for account dimension member..
Can any one has come across this kind of situation.
    thanks

    Hi,
    Lets say for example.
In Flow Dimension I have 5 members.
    1. Opening Balance
    2. Additions
    3. Deletions
    4. Closing Balance
    5. Average Balance
All these are base members of "Total Flow" .
Now when I am creating reports If I select Total Flow in the current view Its gives me aggregated value (opningadddel+..etc.)
    which is not fair value.
If I select Closing Balance in the Current View in reports that also not a fair value because in some input schedules I need to take average value.
Is anyone have good practice for using the flow dimension in planning application.
    thanks

  • Change movie dimensions

    Well,
The problem is pretty well summed up in the title. For
reasons passing understand, a client has replaced a large LCD
monitor that was playing a vertical Director movie at 768x1366 with
one whose maximum resolution capability for VGA in is 768x1024. I
have messed around with scaling the movie with a MIAW and some
other methods, but as I imagined, they are of no use, or I can't
get them to behave the way I want. Are there any third party
applications that could help display this movie properly on the new
screen. It is a wide screen, but can't handle the higher
resolution, so I am imagining that if I could squish our current
movie, then the screen would stretch it back out into a somewhat
presentable state. I am aware of the image quality problems that go
along with this, but want to give all the options before they
decide to go buy a third monitor to do this. Thanks...

It's not exactly clear what you've tried, but presumably
    window().drawRect was one of them?

  • Find movie dimensions with Automator?

I need to go through 300+ mp4 files to determine if their dimensions are correct to be viewed on my AppleTV.
    Is there a way to:
    1. Point Automator to a directory of MP4 files
    2. Automator to inspect each file's dimension attribute
    3. Automator to compare the dimension value to a defined value (i.e. 640x480)
    4. Automator to provide a list of files whose dimensions are not correct
I cannot find a way to make Automator "look" at the dimension attribute of each file...but I am new to all of this...
    Any help would be appreciated...
    Thank you!!

I've answered my own question.  It wasn't easy, but I finally found some content.  This site was useful for naming a number of "calibration" or "demonstration" disks, and some of those contain audio tracks encoded with various methods.  Some include on-screen speaker identification so you can map your system.
I was interested in 7.1 tracks encoded with LPCM, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA.
Unfortuantely I have not found a way to properly play ANY of these.  They all play, but I haven't found any software that produces 7.1 output.  In general the rear surrounds never get sent a signal, even though my Mac and my receiver both indicate that the "pipe" is open.
So far, Audio Midi Setup is the only app I've found that can talk to all 8 of my speakers.  But that alone is not very useful!

  • Movie dimensions, blog vs podcast?

I want to create of video podcasts series.
    I create a podcast, drop a 16x9 movie on the entry page. It's 16x9.
I change to the podcast (list) page and it's square.
Can't fix it because you can't edit this page, only the enty page which is the right size.
    I create a blog, drop a 16x9 movie on the entry page. It's 16x9.
I change to the blog (list) page and it's 16x9, the right size.
Is this a feature, a bug or "by design" ?
I'm using the blog page, but it iritates me that iWeb adds the uneditable "read more..." to the text as the link, where the podcast page adds "listen..." which is slightly more accurate. "view..." would be better, but you can't edit.
    Thanks,
    Art

    Art...
it's my understanding that the 4x3 settings are determined by that fact that the podcasts are available to be uploaded on iTunes. I did a quick check on the ITMS and didn't find any 16x9 videos there, and also I checked the quicktime video podcast page found here
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/tutorials/videopodcasts.html
at the bottom of the page is a short paragraph about specs for podcasts.
I've seen some discussion in the podcasting forum about changing the "read more" to "view"... but couldn't find a reference to it tonight.
sorry.. wish I could be more help.

  • Header Logo and Menus strange movement when browser minimized

When my demo site is minimized http://fingerprint02.businesscatalyst.com/ the logo and menus seem to be off sync and not minimizing gracefully. I have read about 100% widths and tried to put a rectangle around, I have tried this and moved rectangle to the back but it doesnt seem to work.
Any help would be great, thanks

Try removing the pinning applied to the logo and menu bar. Your logo is pinned to top center and your menu is pinned to top right of the browser, causing those effects.

  • Dynamically read height and width dimensions of .mov

    Hi there!
I am wondering if anyone knows of a way to dynamically get the height and width dimensions of a quicktime movie, before streaming it?
The circumstances are this. I have clients who upload quicktime movies to my server. Right now, I use code to embed movies in a fixed size page, but the movies can vary quite dramatically in terms of their dimensions. For example, if the movie is 400px wide, it looks fine in my page. However, if it is 800px wide, it extends out beyond the borders of my page and looks terrible. I could just make a huuge page, but then the tiny movies look ridiculous
If I could somehow gets the dimensions of a movie before it starts streaming, i could create a large target page for larger movies, and a small target page for small movies. Basically it comes down to being able to somehow dynamically read the dimenions of the movie.
Is this even possible? Like my boss keeps telling me, it's all just Math isn't it?
    Thanks!!!

    Hmmm...
I think the movie dimensions are exposed to JavaScript, but only after the movie has opened. So you would have to load the movie into the plugin, then get the dimensions, then use JavaScript to rewrite the page. Which I don't think is quite what you had in mind; you're wanting to collect this information and deal with it before you write the page.
Let me see if I have this straight...You are allowing clients to upload movies to your server, and then you're hoping to generate an embedded movie page on the fly in PHP to display the movie just uploaded, correct?
For a library of movies, you could generate a small database of all the movie dimensions, then just look that data up in the table when you generate the page. The trouble is, I don't know of any way to get the movie dimensions except to get them from QuickTime, and to do that you have to load the movie into either the player or the plugin. You could, for instance, have an AppleScript that looks at each movie and populates the database, but I don't see how you could trigger that to run on upload, and I don't know what kind of server you're using.
Now here's an idea...If you have some way of arbitrarily reading and parsing the QuickTime file, you can get the dimensions out of the file, but it isn't easy. If you are lucky, the moov atom will include a prfl atom (movie profile) which includes the video dimensions. But the prfl atom is not mandatory, which means you have to look at each trak atom that contains video and examine the size *and position* and accommodate the fact that you may have multiple, overlapping video tracks. But you could get the data by parsing the QT atoms yourself. All the data you need to do that is here:
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/QuickTime/QTFF/QTFFPreface/chapter1_section1.html
...and may God have mercy on your soul!
Seriously, though, you CAN parse a QT file, and that might be the best (though obviously not the easiest!) way to get the data you want dynamically. QuickTime does help you out by giving you all the offsets for all the atoms, but it can be tricky!

  • What's the best format for a movie to be in a site and be viewed by a PC?

I created a temporary web site using GoLive. I imported a short movie in 2 different versions (1 medium for DSL/Cable and 1 small for Dial-up). When I tested the site either in Explorer or Safari on different Mac computers at home, they both loaded and played OK. However, none of the videos show the bottom bar where the start/stop/volume control appears. Also noticed in a PC that the video had a broken link.
I created a link for QT for Windows so that any PC would be able to download for Free (I don't know if that's the answer).
Is there a universal format that could be saved or exported in QT for PC viewers?
And, why my movies don't show the control bar at the bottom?
The movies were exported as a QT ".mov" Streaming Medium and Low. You can visit: http://www.warreninstitute.com to check them out.
I'd really appreciate if anybody would suggets a better way of handling these short movies.
    Thank you!

Avoid H.264 video codec (default in many presets) so older versions of QuickTime can view your files. Use MPEG-4 or H.263 or Sorenson 3 instead.
The reason your controller isn't showing is because you've (probably) didn't allow for it in the movie dimensions. A 320X240 .mov file would become 320X256 (16 pixels for the controller).
Make sure you're using the proper "tags" (object and embed) in your page code.
    More info here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61011
No need for "streaming" (hint tracks) in your movies. They are only used by special software if your files are served from streaming servers. Your files download and the hint tracks only add to the file size and are not needed.
