Strange names in shared list

When I'm online I notice there are anything between 2 and 10 shared drives/folders on my Shared folders list in Finder. Who/what are these? Do they have access to my hard drive/computer etc?

What Wifi network are you attaching to? School? Home? Coffee Shop? What happens is if you and a computer that is sharing there files is connected to the same network they show up on that list, sometimes they show up on the list for a while even when your no longer connected to that network. Although if you restart your computer when your not sharing a network, most of the time will remove them.
Now as far as them being able to access you computer, depends on wether you have sharing turned on. And what settings you have in sharing will effect mac users compared to pc users being able to access your shared folders. If you don't want them to have access to your computer at all make sure you have file sharing turned off. To do so goto System Preferences -> Sharing -> and make sure file Sharing is not checked/marked.

Server name not showing up in shared list.

Wondering if anyone may know what's up with this. We have a mac mini server with Yosemite server on it. The name for the server isn't showing up on the client computers in the office in the "Shared" list of computers in the Finder.
Any ideas?

Apple talk is on the server and the clients. I also have another server that is connected to the same switch and it can be seen in the chooser. So I do not think it is a config problem with the switches or hubs. I have not changed anything (that I know of). I have researched this and can not find anything on it.

Strange names in Share menu

Since I've been using OS X Yosemite (I started with the beta program) that in finder menu always display strange Shared servers.
First I was hopping that this will go away after OS X final release, but it did not. I'm now running OS X 10.10.
Can anyone give me an idea hoe to get ride of this MacBookPro xxxxxxxxxxxxx ( x)?
If I have sharing option OFF, there are always MackBookPro servers on the share finder.
If I activate on system settings the share folder, a new MacBookPro xxxxx is listed on shared servers with a diferente number. And every time I go ON and OFF on the Share option on the System Preferences, a new server appears.

I've got it.
I believe that TimeCapsule has been storing my network servers name for some time. And since I was using Yosemite betas, something went wrong and it stored the servers name.
I've reset TimeCapsule router and the strange names just disappear.

Yosemite changes the name of shared connection

I've a mini recently upgraded to 10.10
This computer is shared on my network with a specific name (ie room)
After a while I see that this computer is shared with the name "room2"
Also logging on it and checking the name of sharing "room2" is reported. I set it again to the correct name, but yosemite changes it again after some time.
Hints?
Btw: it was a clean installation

OK so I got a bit fed up with this issue, I was also going around in circles until the fix (I have waited over 2 weeks to test before posting this) came to me.
Open System Preferences > Network
In the network section you will most likely see "Automatic" listed as your Location. Click on your current location then click "Edit Locations". Create a new location (I called mine Home but I do not think the name matters) then select it. The old location can now be removed. Apply the changes then sigh with relief. It would seem that the location that you were using when upgrading to Yosemite somehow got corrupted.
I hope that this is a fix that also is workable for you too

Strange name on password reset?

I reinstalled OS X tonight because I got a new hard drive. When I went to log in to iCloud, my password failed but I wasn't too concerned because I rotate them a fair amount and sometimes forget. I hit the password reset button and received the password reset email. Here's where things get kinda weird.
I DON'T have a second email mapped to my iCloud account (an alternate address) BUT when I reset my password, a message arrived in my other email account asking me to reset my password. AND the name listed was not mine. The Apple ID that I use for my store purchases DOES use the email address that received the strange message and it has my iCloud Apple ID as an alternate email address. I know this is complicated, forgive me.
I have double and triple checked that my Apple IDs do not have any other names or email addresses associated with them. All of the info is mine.
Obviously, I have changed all of my passwords after this and will be on the lookout for weirdness.
Is it possible that this was just an Apple server-side fluke?

Still i have a sample code for changing the resource password directly by giving the resource name .. I hope you get an answer soon for this problem
Instead of using checkout and checkin of the view you can directly call the workflow services to change the password. All pass the name of the resource for which the password change is required.

'Shared' list not updating

I'm having problems with the 'Shared' list in Finder. When at home, I still see the shared places from work, but not my iMac that should come up (which is also the only one listed in the 'All...' list). How can I make Finder update the list properly?

Can you provide a little more information? At work, are the other computers running Windows or OS X? Is your laptop running Windows or OS X? Do your home network and network at work have different names?
Generally speaking, Windows networks rebroadcast their share information every 12 minutes. If you woke up your computer from sleep at home, and you are using Windows shares rather than Apple ones, you might not see the shares for several minutes.
You might also want to setup a different "location" in the Network control panel for Home, if you are using Windows file shares and there's a different workgroup name used at work than at home. In that case, you would simply go to network preferences and select which setup to use (work or home).

Unknown item in Shared list

in the Shared list of my Finder window, I see an item that says npi9428a3. There are no computers on the network that I know of with this name. It appears as a computer with a blue screen on it. What is this?

Switching to WPA encryption is done on your wireless router. If you're using an Apple AirPort base station, open the AirPort Utility, select your base station and click the Manual Setup button. Next, click the Wireless tab, and change the pop-up labeled Wireless Security to one of the WPA options. (I use WPA/WPA2 Personal.) If it's not an Apple router, you'll need to read the documentation that came with it.
Changing the encryption to WPA (and, if you were using WEP before, changing the password as well) will lock anyone out who doesn't have the password.
As an aside, if there's a computer on your network that you can connect to, and if you have write access to that shared folder, you should create a text file in TextEdit that says something like "Hey, doofus! You need to make sure guests can't access your computer!", give it a noticeable name (something like "READ THIS YOU DIP!") and put it in that folder. That'll bring their own lack of security to their attention.

Networked machine shows up twice in 'Shared' list within Finder

ok, I have a MBP with 10.5.2 as my main machine. I also have a spare G4 Quicksilver on the same Airport network. When I open a new Finder window, in the 'Shared' list I see my G4 as both the computer name (Fonts) and as username_(fonts.local). With the first one, I can access the drive no problem but can't share the screen. With username_(fonts.local) I can only share the screen but it never connects via Screen Sharing. I can share the screen with Jolly Fast VNC.
Any ideas??

I have had the exact same issue - two or even sometimes three icons (the extras were always with a pc monitor even though there are only macs in our house). It only appeared with my brand new imac and my MBP, not my old imac. Anyway, I figured out how to get rid of it. By default, my computer named my computer my username and the added an apostrophe and computer. So, for instance, my computer was called McIntyre's iMac. I changed the name to McIntyre iMac and the problem solved itself. The networking did not like the apostrophe. I did not have parallels installed, nor windows sharing. The only thing I had on was Printer sharing - which I needed to have. I hope this works for you too, please let us know if it does!!

is it possible to get this key name from parameter list ???

I cannot think of a way to do that. The code that reads the list is supposed to know the key names. That is sort of the point with parameter lists. If you need to have parameter lists that can be interepreted by some code that doesn't know about a specific list but knows how to interpret it by inspecting the key names, perhaps you can specify a separate parameter list with the key names as values and call the keys of that list something generic?

from some day's When we facing problem when we are access from host name that shared folder is accessible but same time same computer when we are trying to access the share folder with IP it asking for credentials i have type again and again
correct credential but unable to access that. If i re-share the folder then we are access it but when we are restarted the system then same problem is occurring.
I have checked IP,DNS,Gateway and more each & everything is well.
Pls suggest us.

According to your description, my understanding is that the same shared folder can be accessed by name, but can’t be accessed be IP address and asks for credentials.
Please try to enable the option below on the device which has shared folder:
Besides, check the Advanced Shring settings of shared folder and confrim that if there is any limitation settings.

How do you add a reminder to a shared list in iCal

I'm trying to add a reminder to a shared list in iCal, but I do not see the list as an option in the "Get Info" window or in the "Calendar" menu list. This shared list was shared with me in iCloud, and if I log into iCloud.com, I can add the item there. I think I can also add via my phone, but I'm not sure. Also, I can see items in the shared list, and I can check them off. I just can't add.
I don't know if this is an iCloud issue, but I am able to add items in iCal to a shared list *I* created, just not to one that my wife created. Is there some setting in iCal to enable this?

It is not easy to see and I found it by messing around. First of all put them in daye order by dragging the screen down and touching the little alarm clock at the top. Then touch the space below the earlies reminder and a new one comes up. It defaults to 'today' so you have to touch the new reminder and then touch the 'i' button that appears. You can then change the date and time etc. No easy.
I dont understand why Apple do these thongs before updating the user guide!

Why can I NOT name a Reminder List the exact same thing as a Calendar?

Remember the good old days when ToDo Lists where automatically related to a specific calendar? I want that back. Why can I not name a Reminder List and a Calendar with identical titles? Why do I have to create a calendar named "Blue Project" and then create a Reminder List and name it "Blue Project 2" or some other iteration? This is totally asinine.

Precisely. How is "loss of functionality" progress or an upgrade? Why should I have to install an extension just to get a "reload" button? What a pile of crap. Personal File Sharing not in Sharing list

Hi. I am running Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.8 and I would like to turn on the Personal File Sharing service under Sharing from the System Preferences menu. Unfortunately, the only services available in the list are Remote Login, Apple Remote Desktop and Remote Apple Events.
Any advice on adding Personal File Sharing to the Sharing list would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Acl-name in access-list requirements

I would ask about the acl-name in access-list,
Does it act as a link between the ACL and an interface?
or it could be written as any-thing, without any constrains?
such as
access-list test_ACL extended permit tcp host 10.105.10.22 host 10.140.180.35 eq ssh
is it OK?
or test_ACL should be defined somewhere prior using it in ACL?

just because the ACL is not defined in an access-group doesn't mean it is not in use. There are several other areas that use ACLs. Class-maps are another common place where ACLs are used to match on traffic that will be used in a policy-map. Another comon use for ACLs is to define interesting traffic, or traffic that is to be encrypted, over a site to site VPN.
But for this specific ACL that you mention, the question you need to answer is, does the ACL define IPs that are assigned within your network, and do you have any applications that require the tcp timeout to be adjusted? If the answer is no to either of thaese then it is safe to assume you can remove the class-map test_ACL and the class test_ACL under the policy-map configuration.
Whether the ACL itself can be removed, I would assume it is safe to remove as it is called test_ACL, but then again, I have see people set up test configurations and then leave them as is without changing the name. So I would suggest investigating further to see if the name test_ACL is referenced any other places in your configuration.
