Strange new Mail behavior in Lion after iCloud implementation

I never use Apple Mail, I only use Gmail through my browser.
However, after getting an iPhone and installing iOS 5 on that, and enabling iCloud, the Apple Mail icon now bounces in the dock a few times a day, as if something is making it want to launch (even though I have never launched it on purpose).
Since the timing of this seemed iCloud-related, I searched through the settings I thought most likely to cause this, and none of them are enabled, but maybe I missed one. If so, can someone please tell me where that setting might be?
I looked in System Preferences->Mail, Contacts & Calendars and the 'iCloud' account syncs the following, which all have checkmarks: Contacts, Calendars, Bookmarks, Photostream, Documents & Dtaa, and Find My Mac. However, the one that might affect this, "Mail & Notes", is not checked.
Similarly, in System Preferences->iCloud, the same boxes are checked as listed above, and "Mail & Notes" is NOT checked.
What am I missing here?

If you want to download random stuff from anywhere, or if you need or want to let your patches fall behind, or if you're going load whatever a pop-up or advert or drive-by package or toolbar that somebody wants to load, clicking on stuff in random mail messages (including fake invites, fake shipping reciepts, lottery announcements, etc), yes, you might consider loading an add-on tool.
OS X ships with Xprotect support enabled, and this can and has been used to lock down components (such as the Java JVM plug-in) when something nasty is loose.
The OS X Server variant ships with anti-malware tools — ClamAV — that can scan mail and related storage, and which can mitigate malware for OS X as well as for other platforms.
But anti-malware and anti-virus add-ons?  In general, not needed IMO.
Recent attacks have targeted Flash and Java, and these are easily mitigated.
To avoid any need for anti-malware tools, keep your patches current, keep the Java JVM plug-in disabled in your web browsers (or don't install Java) and use a Flash blocker (or deinstall Flash) in your browser, don't download any stuff you didn't go looking for, pick gonzo passwords, have good backups and preferably a copy that can be offsite and disconnected, use a gateway-firewall, use sftp and not ftp, and all the rest of the usual advice applies...
There's no panacea: an anti-malware tool probably won't protect you from a wholly new attack or from what's called an advanced persistent attack, nor from spearphishing, either.  So you still have to watch what you're doing.
The cure can be a problem, too: anti-malware tools work by doing the same sorts of things as the malware wants to do, insinuating itself into low-level corners of the OS, but attempting to detect and block the malware.  The act of connecting into the OS can potentially cause problems for the "host" OS, just as malware can corrupt and crash a system.

  • Why does it take 4 or 5 minutes for new mail to show up after I open Thunderbird?

    When I initially open my Thunderbird mail program, no new mail appears until the program has been open for 4 or 5 minutes. My computer at work shows new email almost immediately after opening the program. I wish I could figure out what the difference is. I formerly used Outlook Express (with XP) before I got this new computer with Windows 7. Same computer and os at work. I would appreciate any help you could give me with this issue.
    Thanks!

  • Question about the new Mail shiped with Lion

    Hi,
    I've this quick one to the Dev's which have already worked with Lion's Mail.
    Would it be possible to do simple file copy from Snow Mail to Lion Mail ?
    I am not asking about the migration possibilyties during upgrade because my current MBP is a Core Duo one and therefore can't use them for Lion.
    My MBP 2006 needs to be upgraded soon :-) and will take place in the comming weeks. And I am wondering how to transfer my current mails to the new platform OS since Lion Mail is upgraded as well.
    Is the Filesystem Layout from Lion Mail the same as in Snow Mail which allows me to do a plain FS copy ?
    Thxs in advance

    Hi,
    I've just spent a good hour or so trying to work out how I can move my existing emails and mail accounts from my MacBook Pro (Snow Leopard) machine to my brand new iMac (Lion) machine.
    Have not had much luck.
    I copied over ~\Library\Preferences\com.apple.mail.plist and the files in ~\Library\Mail and ~\Mail Downloads.
    When I start mail in Lion, it asks me for new email account information so has no idea of my existing accounts.  Once I re-enter one of my email accounts, I get all my old folders but all the emails are missing....
    Is there a simple way to copy accross the accounts and existing mails.  I have tried the Migration Assistant, but I dont want to end up with a new account on the machine just to get the mail accross.
    I'm pretty sure I did the same process between two snow leopard machines and it worked fine....
    thanks for any help...

  • Strange e-mail Behavior

    I have been experiencing a strange phenomenon with my Mail account, the nature of which is as follows. Whenever, I send an e-mail via my mail account using my Hotmail account the recipient gets the message, however, it states that the e-mail is coming from my wife’s Hotmail account instead of mine. It should be noted that the only similarity in both e-mail accounts is that they are Hotmail accounts. Any suggestion on what could be causing this strange phenomenon and how I can resolve same will be greatly appreciated.

    Hello, do you & her share the same computer account?
    Check Mail Preferences>Composing>Send messages from, & see if it's set to Send new messages from Last viewed account, or hers.

  • Where is the new mail icon in lion

    Hi, Guys!
    Just upgraded to Lion - and I must say I already love it. One of the main reasons for me to upgrade is the new version of Apple Mail, which appears to be much nicer and less cluttered as the (already aged) old version.
    BUT: Is it just me? I seem to recall havin seen a new icon for Mail App in the WWDC keynote this year - I even seem to recall Steve (or who did present that part? Craig Federighi?) mentioning that there is a new icon for it. But in my installation of Lion, it is still the ole thing... Any ideas? Are there any reasons? Did the icon disappear in the last minute? Did anybody who had access to the Developer Builds realize this? I really would like to know what's happening with this... and to speculate if we're going to see the new icon in an update... :-D I really think the old icon is aged, and has too much detail... and too little contrast...
    Looking forward to hear Your ideas about this!
    Best regards,
    Björn

    Hey, Mark!
    Great! That is exactly the icon that I also remember. What is weird, though, is that I fast-forwarded through parts of the WWDC keynote's video podcast yesterday, and found in all screenshots I have stumbled upon from Lion that Mail still had the old icon... that confused me, because I was sure I had seen a new icon. The page You posted the link to contains the new icon as I remember it. I do like it a lot. Anybody knows what has happened - and if the icon can be downloaded somewhere? Has it been included in one of the preview builds of Lion, and was drawn last minute?
    Anyway - thanks a lot... I at least feel sane again (and trust my memory much more now :-D )!

  • Strange Junk Mail Behavior

    I get a couple of thousand junk mails a day and have to empty the folder several times a day I have noticed at the bottom of the junk list is an email that has migrated from my inbox. i can move the file back into the correct mailbox. At first i thought is was a visual glitch But when i empty the junk folder the migrated email is deleted with it.
    I have been going back and forth into my junk mailbox each time i go in, there is a single not junk email at the base of the list it can come from any mailbox including the sent folder.
    Any thoughts.

    Hi Tim.
    This kind of problems are caused by some corruption in one or more of the files used by the junk filter. Try this first:
    1. Go to Preferences > Junk Mail and disable junk mail filtering.
    2. Quit Mail, then open it again.
    3. Go to Preferences > Junk Mail, enable junk mail filtering, and configure it however you wish.
    4. Reset the junk filter database (Preferences > Junk Mail > Reset).

  • Strange (new?) behavior

    Using Safari 3.1.2, I go to a site such as tv.yahoo.com - click on a listing, a description window opens below the listing - but the window is empty. I could have sworn that Safari worked with Yahoo! TV previously - hmmm?
    Another Safari issue...
    I recently decided to stop using Windows when I was doing my online bill payment. So, I go to my financial institution, start the 'bill pay' routine, click on the calendar icon (which should cause a little pop-up to appear so I can click on a payment date) and I get an error message stating this feature doesn't work in Safari...I have to enter dates manually. Now, I wouldn't swear that this had worked previously, but I thought that it had.
    This is not an 'active x' thing - the above errors do not occur if I'm using FireFox on the Mac.
    I've tried this in Safari 3.1.2 on both my Mac G5 OS 10.4.11 and my MacBook OS 10.5.4 - same problem on both.
    Any ideas?

    Barry...
    Thanks for your comments:

    FWIW, I just tried that page you posted and it displays fine here (no blank page).
    I probably didn't explain this clearly (looks like I can't insert a screen capture here - too bad). If you go to tv.yahoo.com, click on TV Listings in the menu, you then are presented with a sequential list of shows by hour by channel. When you click on one of the listings, a large box expands below the listing - that box should be filled with descriptive info - in my Safari, it is blank. The way the box opens, it looks like flash technology - but it's not - if you right click the box, you don't get that tell-tale flash contextual message (Zoom In, Zoom Out, etc). And not that it matters, but my flash plug-in is working.

    What is your banking site? If it is Bank of America, the calendars come up just fine here as well.
    It's actually a 'credit union' - Kinecta. Not a small 'can't afford decent programmers' type thing - they're one of the nation's largest. There are other sites where the calendar does work in Safari (american airlines, any of the travel booking services). I just find it irritating that something like FireFox will work just about everywhere (assuming 'active x' isn't required) but Safari seems to be misbehaving.

    I think I would, at a minimum, clear the safari cache, trash the preference file (com.apple.safari.plist) and restart your computer. I might even reset Safari (clears the cookies as well).
    No luck. I cleared the cache, trashed prefs, deleted all Yahoo cookies. Still no luck.

  • Another Empty New Mail after 'NewMail' token

    Hi there,
    Here's my code to send an email via the GroupWise client form.
    vGWCmd := CreateOleObject('GroupWiseCommander');
    vGWCmd.Execute('MainWindowShow()', sRet);
    // Let the time to GW to open main form
    Application.ProcessMessages;
    Sleep(1000);
    vGWCmd.Execute('NewMail()', sRet);
    vGWCmd.Execute('TextSetTo("' + sSendTo + '"; True)', sRet);
    vGWCmd.Execute('TextSetSubject("' + sSubject + '"; True)', sRet);
    vGWCmd.Execute('TextSetMessage("' + sBody + '"; False)', sRet);
    All works fine but after the user clicks the Send button, a brand new
    empty mail is created and popup. If I understand well Tokens, it is like
    a message (sent using API SendMessage).
    Maybe tokens are mixed up and that's why another new mail form is created
    after email is sent. Is there an equivalent and more predictable way to
    send tokens (a kind of PostMessage)?
    Thank you for reply,
    Rej Cloutier

    I think there is a setting in the GW client that automatically creates a
    new mail form upon send. Look under tools, options, environment, open
    new view on send

  • No new mail notification in Outlook - CAS Exchange RPC Client Access problem

    Hi, we're facing this problem:
    Users start complaining they suddenly don’t receive new mail notifications in Outlook (2010/2013)  anymore
    Inbox does not show the new mail either
    When the user changes folders in outlook, the new mail does show in the Inbox folder
    Restarting Outlook shows the new mail as well.
    The same new e-mail arrives instantly (with notifications) in Owa and on mobile devices
    Sometimes the new mail notification pops up after a longer period of time (from 30 seconds to 10 minutes). But more often not at all.
    This issue seems to occur at random. We’ve been problem free for a week, and sometimes it comes back three times a day.
    Clients running Outlook 2010, 2013 cached or online, on site and off site. So it seems server related, not client.
    It was seen first around January 8th. We did not make any changes around that time that we can link to this problem.
    Only one CAS server (EXCH1-RTD) shows this issue. CAS servers on other sites are ok
    EXCH1-RTD has CAS and HUB transport roles. The same site has two mailbox only servers. EXCH2-RTD (mailbox server for normal mailboxes). And EXCH3-RTD (mailbox server for archive mailboxes)
    No entries in the event logs that seems to be related
    As the problem only occurs with Outlook clients, I suspected RPC issues. We cannot gracefully stop the “Microsoft Exchange RPC Client Access” service on EXCH1-RTD  while the issue occurs. We
    can only kill the process and restart the service, solving the issue instantly.
    What we’ve tried until now:
    Updated all Exchange servers from Exchange 2010 SP3 RU6 to RU8-v2 (server OS=W2K8R2)
    Updated all Exchange servers  to latest critical Windows updates
    Recalculated requirements using MS Sizing tool.  Upgraded EXCH1-RTD  VM from 8GB and 2 vCPU (1 core/cpu) to 16GB
    and 4vCPU (1 core/cpu)
    Ran various perfmon counters and compared them with other Exchange servers, not finding any obvious anomalies.
    Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
    Ron

    Hi Ron,
    From your description, OWA works well, the issue is related to Outlook side. In your case, I recommend you use Outlook safe mode to determine whether the issue is related to add-ins. If the issue persists, you can create a new profile to check the result.
    Hope this can be helpful to you.

  • Using mail in MOuntain Lion

    I have tried to use mail in mountain lion wiht icloud as my server, and my outgoing mail will not e sent or disappears.I am having the same toruble with my IPHOne using wifi.
    Steve

    Hi SB. Thanks for your advice. I checked and I am using the recommended settings. I'm still not sure how to fix this. It's very irritating! I will read an email on my ipad, then hit my imac and see that the email is sitting unread in my Mail inbox.

  • Mail "unexpectedly quits" after migration from snow leopard to new iMac running Mountain Lion

    Mail "unexpectedly quits" after migration from snow leopard time machine files to new iMac running Mountain Lion.  I can run connection doctor OK.  But the activity window is blank.   If you try to open message viewer window then mail program crashes.  Would really like to get my old emails back as the old imac is totally dead.  Thanks for any help.

    Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
    Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
    Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Post the messages from the time of the last crash, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot.
    When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
    Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
    Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
    Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • ICloud new mail count badge not working in Mail v 5.2 Lion but is working in Mountain Lion on other machines

    I've upgreded 2 of my 3 computers to Mountain Lion, and all seems fine on those 2 machines, but on my older Mac Pro which is not compatible with Mountain, I'm having a problem where the new mail count badge is not showing up either on the iCloud mail box or as part of my total in the dock count badge.  New mail badges is showing up for my other mail boxes, just not iCloud.  I've removed my iCloud inbox, and have re-enabled it and it's still not working.  If I had the problem right at the time I installed Mountain Lion on my other 2 computers, I didn't notice it, so I don't think this problem is related to Mountain Lion on my other machines.

    Glenn,
    Regarding adding and deleting the System Drive from the Spotlight Privacy Tab...... I'm following your sequence, but when I come back to Spotlight Search in the menu bar it just works the same.... no mention of indexing. What's interesting is that "Mail" dosn't appear anywhere in search results when a keyword search is performed via spotlight.
    Regarding the "enevelope Index Files" ..... I followed the instructions and quit and re-opened mail as instructed.  When I re-opened Mail I selected "continue" and the program began to index the contents of mail for about 30 minutes.  I thought that would would fix the issue, but it's still not working.
    I've tried to compare the account setup from my IMAC which works fine to see if I have something setup wrong in the account, but everything looks the same.
    I guess I can try to re-index again?  Don't know what else to do?
    Thanks,
    Bill

  • Mail very slow to get new mail after Lion upgrade

    After I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion my Mail application has become very sluggish. It takes ages to show new mail from my Gmail account. It seems to spend ages downloaded messages. If I access my Gmail via Safari it is virtually instant.
    Any advice most welcome!

    I had a similar problem and it was related to my wireless network settings.  The Lion upgrade had created a second wireless network setup named Apple 888.b1 on my airport/time capsule.  I deleted that second phantom one so it was just back to the one that I had setup and everything is fine again.
    So if your broadband connction is wireless you might check the wireless settings and see if a second network setup was created.
