Strange... No Printers Listed?

I decided to finally set up a USB printer (Epson) with my Intel-based iMac, so I plugged it in, and connected it to one of my 3 USB inputs on the back of my iMac.
Next, I went to my Print & Fax System Preference and of course found no printers in the list or selected in the printing pane. The Printer queue and Printer Setup buttons were also not active. So I went to my Printer Browser to add my printer or something generic that will work with my current Espson model. Now here's the weird part, it was completely empty... there was no list of printers/drivers to choose from or add. The same goes for my Printer Setup Utility... there are no printers listed?
My iMac came installed with Tiger but I downloaded and updated the newest version (OS 10.4.8) from Apple.com a while ago.
I then figured I may need to manually install the drivers myself from my OS X Install Disc. However, the Optional Installs.mkpg, which held the printer drivers was empty, actually everything is empty on the disc? Why does Apple bother to include an empty disc?
Next, I went directly to my HD and found the EpsonPrintersDriver.pkg that I needed in the Receipts folder within my Library. So far so good... However it will not install an upgrade, and I continue to get an "errors installing software" message and to "please try installing again"
I've also noticed that all the various plugin and drivers are already in the Printers folder, within the Library as well, including all the Espon printers.
I'm honestly at a loss... and I'm hoping someone can please help?
iMac Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hi and thank you...
I agree, having multiple print drivers that are not needed is wasteful and unnecessary, however, not having any at all appear listed in order to add is the main problem.
I have the driver/plugin I need sitting inside my Epson folder, in the Printers folder within my Library, yet it will not show up in my Printer Browser in order for me to add it?
My Printer Browser has both a Default Browser and IP Printer section or window, but in trying to configure my default or main printer from my computer, both the "Name" & "Location" tabs are inaccessible and the "Print Using" pull down menu tab used to select a driver or printer model is not active?
This seems to be where my problem lies, and it's frustrating me to no end???
I've also tried making a copy of my Epson folder containing all the different drivers and placing it into the other Printers folder in the Library found in my personal user folder which is automatically setup with my name. Ironically, today when I went to check and trash it, since it hasn't work, it was not there and apparently had disappeared... another Mac mystery?
The computer sees and recognizes the printer and Epson model plugged into the USB port according to my System Profiler, so this is primarily a problem with my Printer Browser and the Printer Setup Utility as far as I can tell.
After 3 days I'm exhausted with this and still hoping you guys can help resolve this issue for me.
Mrtotes... thanks again, and please feel free to add any other impute or advise you may have?

  • Strange device in list in Find my iphone app

I have just found strange device in list in Find my iphone app, how can this happen? Whom can I contact to check this?

    Hi Bucknamc,
I would recommend doing one of two things:
    1) As Gail suggested, go to Settings > iCloud > Find my iPhone, and turn it on. If you are going to do this, you should also go to Settings > General > Restrictions on your child's phone, and select "Don't allow changes to accounts." This will ensure your child does not enable other iCloud functions, which would cause your data to appear on each other's devices.
    2) This is a better solution, in my opinion, since it does not involve sharing an Apple ID. If your child has their own Apple ID (you can create one at http://appleid.apple.com), you can download the Find my Friends app and add them on there. There is also a setting in the Restrictions menu to prevent Find my Friends from being turned off. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/find-my-friends/id466122094?mt=8

  • No printers listed in Add Printers

I just purchased a MacBook Pro and transferred my settings from my iMac via Firewire target drive setup.
When I try to add a printer, there are no printers listed at all. I've done the optional installation of all the printer drivers and rebooted with no results.
Does anyone have any idea how to get the printers to show up so that I can choose one to install?
    Thanks very much.

What kind of printer is it? If attached by USB, do you have the latest drivers? If a network printer, what' the IP? Does the printer do Bonjour? Do you have a fixed IP? If attached by something other than USB or a network, by what method? be advised that Epson and HP printers want to use special methods to attach by network.

  • C309a printer keeps disappearing from available printers list

Since I bought this C309a Photosmart Premium printer I have found that after doing a scan or a copy my printer is no longer listed on the available printers list. When I attempt to do regular page printing after a scan or copy a message pops up telling me that I must choose a printer. On the available printers list only "Add Printer" appears. If I reboot the computer then the "HP Photosmart C309 series" appears on the list again and I can print normally again. Does anyone know how to fix this? Does it have anthing to do with the Printer being wirelessly connected to my network? My network always seems to detect it fine, but does scanning or copying break the wireless connection? Any help would be appreciated.

are you using a router that has a dynamic IP address?

  • Since upgrading to Yosemite no printers listed under Print

Since upgrading to Yosemite, i cannot use my HP Officejet Pro 8500. No printers are in fact listed under the Printer&Scan function. I cannot download drivers ! I reinstalled the printer, using old cd and checked HP site for help... Any suggestion ? Thank you

If the HP is connected to the Mac via USB cable, then open an application called System Information, which is located under the Utilities folder under Applications. With System Information open, you will see an entry called USB in the left column. Select this and the top right pane will show all the USB busses in your Mac. The HP should be listed under one of these busses. If not, then try another USB cable or another USB port on the Mac.
If the HP is connected via WiFi, then it will most likely use the Bonjour protocol to advertise itself on the local network. Safari has the ability to show Bonjour devices on the network, which you can enable via the Safari Preferences > Advanced > Bonjour. With the Bonjour bookmark selected the HP should be listed as a local printer. If you don't see the HP then check its network settings to ensure it is connected to your wireless router.

  • Printers suddenly disappeared from my printers list, won't re-install.

I have an iBook G4 1 Ghz with 512 MB ram, 30 GB hard drive. There is a lot of hard drive space available, and the machine is running OS X 10.4.9.
I have two printers I use with it: a Canon S600 inkjet printer, and a Samsung SPP-2040 dye sub photo printer. Have been using the S600 with no difficulty since I got the iBook new 3 years ago, and have used the Samsung many times in the few months we've had it.
Suddenly today, both printers have disappeared from iBook's printer list. If I click on "Add printer", the S600 appears in printer browser window, but the Samsung does not. When I highlight the S600 and click "Add", the message "An error occurred while adding the selected printer" appears. No hint as to what sort of error is offered.
In Print & Fax in System Preferences, no printers show up on the list. Hitting the "+" on that list will show the S600 in the browser window if the printer is connected and power is on. But I cannot add, it just continues searching for the driver.
So, I went to the Canon website and downloaded the S600 driver for OSX (though it should already have this driver; it has been using this printer for years!). Installation then stalled. It said "finishing up" and that it would be done in "less than a minute", but that info was on the screen for almost 20 minutes before I finally just restarted the machine. (I was otherwise unable to escape/abort the install.)
I have not tried to re-install the Samsung printer; it was harder to install in the first place and unlike the S600, it doesn't even appear on the list when I browse for new printers.
Does anyone know what would cause this problem and/or do you have any solutions to suggest? I have not recently downloaded any updates or software that may be messing with my printer settings. The laptop and printers are turned off when not in use, and I have already tried restarting all of the devices.
    Any clue? I'm stumped.
    iBook G4 1 Ghz 30GB 512   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   Samsung SPP-2040, Canon S600

I downloaded the Printer Setup Repair shareware and have been playing with it for a long time. The problem appears to be related to the cups process. It is set to load at start up, but the shareware says it is not running. It says to check permissions. When I do that, the shareware says there are no problems with the cupsd permissions. There is an option to reset everything, but the warnings are too scary.
I have also tried Disk Utility and re-installing CUPS.
This is extremely frustrating. I am not impressed with Apple at this point. I'd consider calling Apple for support, but my machine is 3 years old, no longer under warranty, and I don't wish to pay them $50+ for a phone call because their automatic update process messed up my machine!
    Any other suggestion?

  • Cannot add my new Epson Artisan 725 to my printers list.

    Hello,
I have a problem, i just bough a new Epson Artisan 725. The wireless set up works perfectly. But when it comes to add it to my printer list. It doesn't work.
A window pop up, telling me that there is a software available for this printer from Apple. I accept and it starts to look for the software. But suddently an error message appear telling me that the printer's software is currently not available. And to contact the manufacture of the printer.
I've been on Epson's website, and download a whole bunch of drivers, nothing works...
I'm getting irritated with this printer...
Can someone give me the solution ??
    That would be amazing !
    Thanks.

     Hi again
You really are very helpful. All this is taking your time up so sorry
I followed your instructions to the letter and everything came up ok as far as the bit when I reached the 'admin' PW
then I kept getting a pink error page and couldnt go any further. Im sorry to be such a pain.
It seems it is requesting a user name which I ignored but once I add 'admin' it blocks me.
Click Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> Command Prompt...A black box will appear(Command Prompt)...In the Command Prompt window type ipconfig and press 'Enter'...Look for Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection IP Address , Subnet Mask and Default Gateway...
IP Address should be 192.168.1.x, Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway : 192.168.1.1 (assuming your router is 192.168.1.1)...
If you get the above mentioned IP Address, Subnet and Gateway Address then you should ping the Gateway, type ping 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...If it gives you request timed out then disable any firewalls, security softwares on the computer...
If you get 4 replies then, try to adjust the browser settings...Open an IE, click Tools >> Internet Options, then delete all files, cookies, history, forms...Goto "Connections", make sure Never Dial a Connection is checked, click on LAN Settings and make sure all the options are unchecked...Once you are done click on O.k...Close the IE and re-open it...
Now,go to start>>>run and in the run box type http: "//192.168.1.1" without quote and hit enter. Now,it will prompt you for username and the password.Leave the username blank and type admin in the password.

  • Strange (foreign) users list in get info/permissions window!

Background info: OS up dated to 10.7.4.   I am the admin.  Husband is standard user. One group, which includes my husband and I.  One guest (no sharing) account created.  I can connect remotely to my mac with admin login info.
    1. When, applying read and write permissions to HD for the "owners" group  (which i created)
"The system extension “/System/Library/Extensions/Accusys6xxxx.kext” was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product’s vendor for an update."
    and
"The system extension “/System/Library/Extensions/acfs.kext” was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product’s vendor for an update."
    2. I created a shared folder (users/me/public/shared)for my husband and I to have dual read and write access. I made this folder last year.  Tonight i clicked "get info" and a user named "wheel" had read and write access.  I did not create this user.  Also "_guest" and "guest"  were listed under names in permissions.  They had read only access. Additionally, here is a "staff" user and "everyone" users(are they default users).  Can I delete all users but admin (me, my husband and our group? "
    3. Several times over the last few months, I was concerned about unsual OS performance.  I used the disk ustitlty to repair permissions. I see the following often in my repair log.  What is "LockScreenLeopard.app"  and what does "drw-r--r--" mean?
    Permissions differ on “System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/AppleVNCServer.bundle/Contents/Su pport/LockScreenLeopard386.app/Contents/Resources/da.lproj/MainMenu.nib”; should be -rw-r--r-- ; they are drw-r--r-- .
    Repaired “System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/AppleVNCServer.bundle/Contents/Su pport/LockScreenLeopard386.app/Contents/Resources/da.lproj/MainMenu.nib”
Do I have a hacker?  Do you all use antivurus/spyware software these days?  If so what app?

pzeitler, i tried your fix. it worked but only partly. i had to go to an admin account and do the sudo because my non-admin account that was affected does not allow me to sudo from it. so i do it from admin account and it seems i add my non-admin user to all admin files\folders with full permissions and no admin account user. so i open the home folder in get info, add admin user and set permission, apply recursively to all inside it. How ever, i couldnt remove the non-admin user from admin user folder permissions.
now i go to non-admin user account and find that unknown grp is gone for all except three folders (public/sites/downloads). i also checked a third, non-admin user and it seems unaffected by all the operations that i have performed. but it has the unknown grp in it.
I guess i have to wait for apple to fix it rather than mess up the system myself.

  • Strange and long list of udp listeners

Does anyone else running 10.6.4 have a large list of listening udp ports? I ran a netstat today and after the normal ports I expected to be open (ssh and iTunes) I saw a long list of 5 digit udp ports listening. I have my Apple Firewall on and I've unchecked the Airport Utility "listen for Airport Devices with a yellow light" check box.
When I turn off the network interface, the ports go away. They re-appear when I turn on a network interface, any network interface. Here's the list of ports listening:

I found the command lsof that you can use in the terminal (e.g. sudo lsof -i-N -P | grep UDP) and all these connections are from mdnsresponder. I tried shutting it off, because I really don't want to do multicast DNS. I'm perfectly happy asking my assigned DNS server for name to IP mappings but alas, Snow Leopard won't work with mdnsresponder shut off...
So I guess this question has turned into how can I turn off all the chatty network junk and still use standard network services. I don't want to broadcast details about my computer on networks I'm connected to and I only want to accept DNS answers from my configured DNS server.

  • Unable to reach printers liste on HP ePrintCenter

    Hi,
I'm trying ot change some parameters of my configurated printers, but I can't reach them, on the help it says that I have to find ePrint Panel, but I don't find it.
    Where is it?
    Thanks by advance.

Hi BlueTree, log into your ePrintCenter account and in the Printers tab you'll see those printers associated with your account. There should be an ePrint Settings button on the left side opposite the job history for each printer (see below). This will allow you change who the allowed senders to the printer are, some basic print job settings and turn Google Cloud Print on or off.
Hope that answers your question, best of luck.

  • C410A All in One disappears from my Printers list.

Every couple of days the Printer disappears from the "Printers and Faxes" menu. Printer is still under warranty and calls to HP have been frustrating. Each time they have me uninstall all of the software which takes an hour and then reinstall it all over again. Problem never goes away. All of the software for this printer is still in the Add or Remove Programs menu when I look for it.  This has happened four times!
Equipment is an HP Pavilion tower with Windows XP SP3
    Cisco E4200 router.
Printer is wired Ethernet not wireless
    Thanks.

Let's set a static IP address for the printer:
    - Print a Network Config Page from the front of the printer. Note the printer's IP address.
    - Type that IP address into a browser to reveal the printer's internal settings.
    - Choose the Networking tab, then Wireless along the left side, then the IPv4 tab.
    - On this screen you want to set a Manual IP. You need to set an IP address outside the range that the router automatically sets (called the DHCP range). You can change the DHCP range of the router using its internal settings page.
    - Use 255.255.255.0 for the subnet (unless you know it is different, if so, use that)
    - Enter your router's IP (on the Network Config Page) for the gateway and first DNS. Leave the second one blank.
    - Click 'Apply'.
Now, shut down the router and printer, start the router, wait, then start the printer.
After this you may need to redo 'Add a Printer' using the new IP address.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

  • I dont have any printers listed so cant add one?

This printer I have has been working for over 2 years but now cant find it in list and infact I dont have any listed?  Check network as using wireless every thing is fine anyone have an idea what I need to do?

I'm not at all familiar with HP; I do know that when I updated to Mountain Lion, it took me 4 hours for my printer to be recognized. So, hopefully, someone else will have an easy/better idea - once you have it working via USB, make sure your WiFi works, the router is on, and try it again after unplugging the USB.

  • Strange BIOS Boot Listing--New L775D-S7132

I have a new Satellite L775D-S7132 acquired just 2 days ago after my Windows 8 fiasco. I have a question about the BIOS.  It is an Aptio BIOS the same as my older L675-S7016. The new 775 BIOS will NOT recognize a USB flash drive, bootable or not. It does recognize my backup USB HDD. The computer recognizes the flash drives and allows input and output with no problems whatever. There is no problem except if I ever HAD to boot from a USB flash drive, I would not be able to since there would be no way to select boot from it.
The old 675 BIOS, also an Aptio, recognizes a bootable flash drive I have as a FDD.  It also recognizes regular flash drive as USB. Jerry Lippey suggests I re-flash the BIOS and I believe that is an obvious thing to try (maybe the ONLY thing).  However, as a regular on here for the last year or so, one thing I've learned is to leave the BIOS alone unless you absolutely have to do something with it.  Too many people have ended up with very costly door stops!
    Anyone have any ideas?

Didn't really think I would get any answers about this. Have since determined I couldn't reflash the current BIOS even if I decided to try since it is version 1.5 and Toshiba's Downloads page only shows 1.4 and earlier. Anyone who has been on this Forum for a few months knows there have been lengthy and heated discussions about this model and an extremely fast running clock. The 1.5 BIOS is the one that finally cured that so I'm also not about to revert to an earlier BIOS. So, things will remain status quo and I just hope I never need a bootable USB flash drive as a solution to a problem.
