Strange noise- Fan?

Alright so, i've got a 3 week old macbook, got it on christmas. Recently, i've noticed a sort of...whirring? noise coming from it. I'm pretty sure it's the fan. I can't remember if it's done this from the start or not. I'm pretty sure it's nothng but me being paranoid. Weird thing is, if the MacBook is planted on a flat surace, or even my bed, applying pressure to the top left corer of the macbook stops it (around the magsafe connector area). When the fan speeds up, this seems to go away. It's not the typical "mooing" on and off problem, i'm sure of. its just a constant noise that seems like it should not be. Anyone else? Any ideas?
When the fan speeds up, It kind of sounds like a jet engine warming up for takeoff, the noise gets higher-pitched. Thank you in advance, desperatley hoping i dont have to take it in.

Hard to say without hearing it, but my fan cranks quite a bit sometimes, especially while streaming video on the net with Safari. Maybe other times too, but I haven't paid much attention. I have a Widget called iStat Pro which shows fan speed. Normal usage for me is around 1600-1800 but when it cranks up it can go as high as 6000 rpm and you can really hear it and feel the warm air from the vents near the hinge. The next time it happens, put your hand near the "MacBook" logo and see if you feel warm air moving. If so, it's the fan. It is fairly rare for me for it to go that high, and if I close Safari or just navigate to a non-video site, it slows back down pretty fast.
If it is constant and different from the fan, I don't know.

  • My fan makes loud and very strange noises.

    Hi again,
My fan makes loud and very strange noises. Is there any cure for that?
    Thank you!
    Markus

Hmm... that is strange. There are a couple reasons that I can think of.
First, go to System Preferences -> Energy Saver -> Processor Performance. See what its set to. If it is currently set to Highest, your fan could be going more often. Turn it down to Reduced or Automatic. Note if there is any difference.
Secondly, are you all up to date on software updates? The last step was to see if it was a software issue. If it isn't, then you probably have a defective fan. AppleCare?
Now, you would open your PowerBook. Look in the Apple docs (Support - Manuals) to find how to do it for yourself, or take it to a shop or Apple Store and have them do it. Safest option.
Look at your fan. Has it come free of the anchor and is hitting against the wall or fan surround?
Lastly, try keeping the PowerBook in a open, ventilated area. The fan will power up less if the computer stays cooler. For a possibly irritating but possibly helpful option, purchase a product that lifts the PowerBook off your lap or desk. I think Rain Design makes a good one.
    Good luck!

  • NB Fan -- Strange Noises

My North Bridge fan has started making some strange noises especially at start-up. From what I can see the fan is on it's last legs. I am looking for a new cooler that is compatible with my mobo (see sig). Also there isn't much space as my 7800GS is in front of part of the fan.

  • My macbook (2009) keeps making strange noises. What to do?

Yesterday, my macbook started to make strange noises. A little scratchy noise. Like there's somthing wrong with the Fan or something.
I called Apple Support, but they told me i had to reset the SMC and PRAM/NVRAM. I triend, but the noise is still there.
Does anyone know what to do?? Is it bad?
    Its a really annoying sound.

It could be the fan.....or the hard drive.....this is a link to a data recovery firm that has posted the various sounds made by failing hard drives.......
    datacent.com/hard_drive_sounds.php
......make sure your data is backed now in case the hard drive is failing.....

  • MacBook Pro makes strange noises

My MacBook Pro recently started to make strange noises like an elecyticity cable was sparkling. Today I closed the screen to move it and started to make a greater sound like an old ventilator when I opened back then it went into sleeping, can somebody tell me what is happening?
    Thanks

I think I had the same problem as you on a 13" MBP. After the grinding noise, did your laptop suddenly make a really fast whooshing sound? If that's what you're experiencing, there might be a broken ball bearing in your fan. In that case, you have to take it to an Apple Store and get that replaced.

  • Mega 865 - Strange Noise !

When i power up my Mega 865 I get a strange noise, like a fan is working over time, it only happens on the initial power up !!

I haven't explained this very well because i cant

  • MBP 1,1: strange noises, battery failure

My MBP 1,1 (SL, 64GB Samsung SSD) recently started to make strange noises from within. It's hard to decribe, but it sounds like rapid crackling, like a hard disk put into overdrive (however a SSD is installed). Along with that, there's a high-pitched monotonous  sound.
The noise is the loudest somewhere between the ExpressCard cage and the battery multiconnector cable.
Further, when the Mac is running solely on  battery power (without the MagSafe being connected), power suddenly goes off without any warning. Although fully charged the battery LED blinks indicating it's empty.
    What I tried so far:
    - SMC reset
    - deleted power management plist
    - deleted caches
    - AHT - ok!
    - safe boot
    - second battery
    - checked connectors inside
    - disconnected fans
What could that be? My guess is the I/O-Board. Or could a malfunctioning logicboard produce such sounds?
    Thanks!

Since computers should not be making crackling sounds, that would be a good candidate to backup all of your data and have the apple techs at the genius bar run some diagnostics to see what is not working right.  Could be a loose connection that does not show up on AHT.

  • Qosmio X70-A-12W produces strange noise

    Hello
I operate my new Qosmio X70 without the battery but i hear a strange noise that stop or is reduced if i light up the keyboard....
Do you have any idea what it might be?

yes the laptop is band new.. I work on it almost all day cause its the nature of my work so i considered better to remove the battery and just charge and discharge it every now and then to preserve it better.
The sound is not loud its like the fan speeding slower when the keyboard is light up (an example of what i mean strange sound, something like this i am not sure if this is the main cause..)
Other than this very minor issue the laptop is perfect

  • Strange Noise from MSI GTX 770 Gaming

I recently bought a MSI GTX 770 Gaming and it makes a strange noise. It doesn't sound like coil whine to me, more of a clicking. I also don't think its the fans as it makes the exact same noise regardless of fan speeds. However, it does seem directly related to load, the higher the clock speed the louder it gets.
See the below video for the noise, if you listen carefully you can hear towards the end where it transitions from high load -> low load -> high light again.
    Should I be concerned?

    Board:        Asus P6T Deluxe v2
    VGA:           MSI GTX 770 Gaming
    PSU:           Corsair HX750 +3.3V@25A, +5V@25A, +12V@62A, [email protected], +5VSB@3A
    Processor:  Intel Core i7 920 @ 4.0
    MEM:          Corsair Dominator 1600 3x2gb
    HDD:          Samsung Pro 256gb SSD
    COOLER:   Corsair H80i
    OS:            Windows 7 64bit Professional
It is definitely not the fans. The noise is irrelevant to fan speed. Also, did you copy the youtube link? I've heard coil whine and this does not sound the same. It's strange and seems to be coming from the PCB.

  • GTX 570 TW III strange noise

    Hello,
I bought recently GTX 570 TW III and it is making strange noises when the fan speed reaches from 56% to about 62% (checked with MSI afterburner)
To make it more clear: sound appears when playing some games, temperature goes up along with the fan speed. Sometimes the noise starts at about 58% and for example ends at 60%. Sometimes it starts from 60% to 62%. When the fan speed goes under or over those values the sound disappears.
Here is the sound, fan forced with MSI AB from about 58-59-60-62 (with fan speed change sound changes as well.
    The card wasn't overclocked.
My question is what to do about it? Is it a reason to (i do not know how it is said) "to warranty the card"

It actually sounds like the fan blade ends are just touching something at a certain speed. Just check the fan housing and fan surrounds for a wire or something in the vicinity that could be touching. Also check the clearance of the fan blades is even for the complete circumference of the fan housing. Grab the centre of the fan with your thumb and finger and check for movement from side to side. Also check if any of the fan blades have visible chip marks or cracks in the blades.

  • Strange noise when downloading (but in hardware)

Hi, this is the most paranoid question from me ever... so be patient please...
I have this problem, I've recently noticed that sometimes my macbook pro (2010 i7) is making strange noise (it is not hardrive, not fans), it is like the old TVs without any signal, or analog monitors long time in stanby mode (not all, but low end ones). It is close to this sound that I found on youtube, but this isn't my video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOjgdx-aKsE
This strange sound I've got with downloading some files from internet, sound came from place where is MagSafe, but I don't think it is it, 'cause that is when is plugged in and olso plugged out (power cord). It is maybe one centimeter under MagSafe... But when I look at the picture of macbook pro dissassembled, Airport Express is close to it.
I don't know, if that sound will be with ethernet downloading, but over wifi it is. But the most strangest thing is, when I download some file (like podcast) in iTunes, wierd sound will make, also with downloading files with jDownloader... BUT not with downloading files with Safari (or Firefox) ... 64bit over 32 bit? Safari and jDownloader are 64bit, iTunes and Firefox I have 32 bit...
    Could you tell me why?
    Thanks for ANY response.
    Have a nice day

    hello,
same white noise from the speakers on my macbook. volume beeps fine but in between beeps i hear white noise.
    happens with youtube vids.
very intermittent. seems like a software issue to me.
reinstalled leopard, went away for a few days but it's back now.

  • Strange noise from my macbook pro 13" retina

    Hi everyone,
I got a problem with my new macbook pro retina 13"... I bought it last week and I already got problems with it!
When I'm using it, I can hear sometimes strange noises. I made a video showing from where the sound is from and you can hear this noise.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3f7blKARMY
The strangest thing is that the only parts in this computer that are moving are the fans and it doesn't seem to be the fans causing this sound (it would be more regular).
    Thanks for helping me!

In light of the age of the MBP, I suggest you pack it up and go to the Apple store and return/exchange it for a new one.  Problem solved!
    Ciao.

Más cosas... Se trata de los ventiladores. Quizá les falte aceite !
    http://www.macbetagroup.com/?p=18
Por cierto, te puedes descargar la aplicación freeware SMC Fan Control, con la que podrás regular la velocidad de los tres ventiladores que tiene el iMac Intel Core Duo. De esta manera también desaparecen los ruidos que mencionas.

More news... The noise comes from the fans. Maybe they need oil !
    http://www.macbetagroup.com/?p=18
By the way, you can download the freeware app SMC Fan Control. It will allow you fan speed control of your iMac Intel Core Duo. It's also a way to make disappear these chirping noises.

  • Dual Core Center runs with strange noises

    Hello
I just bought a new PC: MSI P45NEO-F (Motherboard) and GALAXY 9600GT (Graphic Card).
I installed Dual Core Center since it was provided as an utility software.
As soon as  Dual Core Center is running, strange noises come out from the speakers and they never stop until I close the application. I have to switched off the speaker because it is unbearable. Except the sound from the speakers, computers is working OK. Even Dual Core Center with this noise seems to work.
I am not an expert at all.
Does anyone had this problem or would know where it comes from ?
Computer seems to work OK when Dual Core center is not running.
    Thanks

    Hello
I just had another look at my problem and I noticed that one of the figure displayed in Dual Core Center was in red. It is the fan speed of system1 in the Fan Menu: the number in red was 995 RPM. As soon as the figure goes above 1000 (it does happen from time to time) the figure becomes green and the strange noise stops.
I have two fans in my computer: the CPU fans whose speed is around 1530 and the System1 fan whose speed is around 995 RPM. There are some setup in the BIOS regarding Fans but I guess everything is properly setup.
Anyway is there anything wrong with a fan system1 speed below 1000 ? Why would Dual Core center put the figure in red in that case and make a noise as a warning ?
    Thanks for your help/advices.

my eraphone of my iphone 4s white unlocked make strange noises during the call and still doing the noise like an interference or saturing the spekaer

This is a common problem with iPhone 4s (and IOS 5)  There isn't ' anything you can do about it, so you're best bet is to go down to the store and get an exchange. If you have an older iPhone (3gs/4) roll back your update from IOS 5 to IOS 4.
