Strange noise on start-up followed by no entry sign

My Macbook Pro (pre black keyboard) started making a strange noise on start up - a very loud grating noise.
Now I get a 'no entry' sign on start up. I cannot progress any further than this sign.
Any ideas on a fix, please?
Thank you.

Karl:
Sounds like you are due for a HDD replacement. Try booting from the install disk, launch Disk Utility in the Utilities menu and see if the HDD appears in the sidebar. You can also boot from the Apple Hardware Test and run the extended test. However, from your description it sounds very much like the HDD. Hopefully you have an up to date backup.
Please post back with an update or further questions/comments. Also include detail or your computer (processor speed, RAM, etc.) in your profile and/or response.

  • Macbook Pro Does Not Start Up - Stuck at "No Entry" Sign

    Hello,
I've been dealing with this hours, so at last I decided to get help from the community.
Let me explain the issue first.
I have checked Software Update, and there was two updates. First one was Java and the other one was EFI Update 2.7. I don't remember the Java update version. After I applied the update, the MBP rebooted itself as it should do; bu the problem occured at that reboot. OSX tried to start up three times, like as it was failing to install the updates after reboot. And at the fourth time, after a few minutes the Apple logo turned into a "No Entry Sign". And it stuck like that. Now, the MBP cannot boot normally, I can only run it on safe mode.
    I have reset PRAM.
As far as I read about the issue over the boards, the problem occurs to be an HDD problem. Yet I can run the OSX in safe mode, which bugs me. So I downloaded SMART Utility to check the HDD. It says there is 1 Pending Bad Sector, and 1 Removed Bad Sector.
What do I do now, any solutions you can offer?
This is the log export from SMART Utility if you wish to check it.

As I'm sure you are already aware, that HDD has failed to the point it cannot find a bootable volume.
If you have a backup, no worries.
If you do not have a backup, you could try to reinstall the operating system and get the disk to a state in which it will at least mount. Then, copy whatever information remains intact to another disk. I would be inclined to replace the drive now, install the failed one in an external enclosure, and attempt to extract whatever information you need from it.

  • HELP: MacBook Pro won't start. MachKernel/slow/no entry sign/erratic

(having major issues figuring out which forum to post this question... In error, I posted this last night to the Mac Pro forum, then this morning to the OSX Leopard Forum. I think it goes here.)
MacBook has been running slow the past couple of days. Yesterday, it wouldn't start-up, and after resetting the PRAM, I got the no-entry sign (barred circle).
Restarting with V: I got a mach kernel error. Found a help sheet on that, but when trying to restart with X, got only as far as the blue screen.
This morning, miraculously, it started up, very slow. I then tried to backup my files, with no success. Tried to burn to a dvd, but that was unsuccessful. (Later at the Apple Store where I was able to backup a few essential files realized that the Burn DVD folder was empty.
Tried to restart using it in target disc mode using FireWire, but on my good macbook, although the slave computer appears, I couldn't access any data ("alias can't be found")
I've tried restarting from a bootable disc. It gets past the apple, the gears, then I can just hear the dvd drive spinning and eventually, I force quit. So restarting from a bootable disc seems out.
For a while, it would startup, but aside from the hard drive icon, the file (pdf, doc, and jpg) icons on my desktop wouldn't change from generic to specific and the rainbow wheel just kept spinning and spinning. I finally forced quit.
Update: Just got back from the AppleStore where I was able to backup a few essential files. It started up again, very very slowly, and all the icons finally changed to their specific thumbnails.
It appears as though it works better if it's rested for a while, although I'm not kidding myself: it does appear as though the hard drive is failing. After the trip to the AppleStore, I bought an 320GB hard drive. I'd like to finish backing up - please don't ask me why I didn't do this before going to the AppleStore...
    Anyway, any help much appreciated,
    --Laura

I've goggled just about everything and I can't seem to fix this problem.

  • Clicking noise when starting up followed by flashing folder icon with ?

I tried restarting with Snow Leopard install disk and running disk utility but the only drive available is the install disk.  Macintosh HD does not display.  Is there anyway salvage old content on computer?

The internal drive appears to have died; in this case, the data on it can only be recovered by a professional service, which can charge hundreds or thousands of dollars.

  • K8 N2 PLATINUM STRANGE TICKING NOISE AT START UP

    Hi
Yesterday I found out that my system fan is not working. I replaced it with no problem.
But the computer started to give a strange ticking noise at the start up following the memory test before IDE detection.
It is ticking for a few seconds and continues without any error message.
I have checked the bios, and realized that the bios screen is slightly flickering.
When I started the "core center" in the windows the indicated CPU speed was 200 X 5 ( 1000 ) but it should be 200 X 11,  ( the bios setting is correct ) After a few tries it came back to 200 X 11.
I have to underline that everything works perfectly, but I surely have some paranoid tendencies  ???
Can this be a board problem? I don't know if this ticking noise is an error message, I was unable to find it in the manual.
    Thanks for your help.
MSI K8N2 PLA. BOARD, AMD 3500+, 2 GIG RAM ( 4 X 512 Dual DDR ), 80 GIG SATA SEAGATE HD, TAGAN 500 WATT power supply, 6600 GT display card, audigy 2zs sound card.

is there a key stuck on you keyboard. I know when I go into bios i hold down the DEL key until i hear 'clicking' from the mobo speaker. is the ticking fast and repetitive?
try unpluggin the keyboard and see if still makes the noise.
    worth a shot.

  • Strange Clicking noise while starting Mac Book Pro Retina Display Late 2013

Hello i´m very concerned about a clicking noise while starting  my mac, the sound comes from the left side, is the SSD producing  this noise ?, this machines are supposed to be very silent right? what do i do? how can claim a replacement?

I too think it is related to body chemistry reacting with the metal or some other environmental condition. Sometimes I have fairly sewaty hands and I have corrosion on the edge of my top case. I don't really care about it. Its a tool and tools wear.
I was told by an engineer that it is referred to as "rusty hands". I'm not sure if its high alkaline or acid, but the engineer told me I had rusty hands after I had been using a drill press for a couple of days. There was rust all over the chuck, and other parts of the drill where I had touched it.

Just done a replacement of the pata DVD drive (its new and is working ok),  and a fresh clean  install of Snow Leopard with all updates, iMac 5.1 behaves strange, sometimes I start Google Chrome and look at youtube videos the computer freezes and shuts down immediately,
I believe its  related to overheating ?
iStat Pro shows GPU diode temp at 66 C, CPU at 48 C,  Fan rpms is around 1000
    Any ideas somebody ?
The hard disk has been previously checked with state of the art techniques that have confirmed that the hard disk drive is in perfect condition.

1.5-3 minute boot up as opposed to 15-20 seconds
    And
why it takes a long time to load a lot of things.
    I have restored this
    from a time machine partition.
TimeMachine is only a backup and restore, it won't fix issues in software and according to your information, doesn't even optimize the restore for best performance on boot hard drives.
What you need to do to regain your speed is to understand how your machine works
    Why is my computer slow?
Fix any and all issues in software following this list of fixes
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Then follow this defrag method I've outlined
How to safely defrag a Mac's hard drive
    Most commonly used backup methods
There shouldn't be need to reinstall OS X fresh unless your having file structure issues which if they are should appear when in the Steps, which then a zero erase and install will cure as well as any bad sector issues, the defrag step wouldn't be necessarry on a freshly installed system obviously as the files are written all together, not in portions all over the drive.
    Hope this assists.

  • Burned CD's: strange noise on inner tracks

    Hi everybody,
since I upgraded my system with a S-ATA DVD burner, I get a strange issue when I write my playlists to CD-R's.
The burned disc has got a persistent noise on the inner tracks and the more the track number raises the more I can hear the noise.
It's not like static or something like that.
It's a weird looping sound that accompanies the track from start to end.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Kind regards

  • My macbook (2009) keeps making strange noises. What to do?

Yesterday, my macbook started to make strange noises. A little scratchy noise. Like there's somthing wrong with the Fan or something.
I called Apple Support, but they told me i had to reset the SMC and PRAM/NVRAM. I triend, but the noise is still there.
Does anyone know what to do?? Is it bad?
    Its a really annoying sound.

It could be the fan.....or the hard drive.....this is a link to a data recovery firm that has posted the various sounds made by failing hard drives.......

......make sure your data is backed now in case the hard drive is failing.....

  • My ipod touch makes a strange noise when makes the synchronization with itunes

At first my ipod touch began doing strange noise in differents situations. Yesterday I try to solved it doing this: I connected it to itunes a made a restore. I thought it was solved, but today the noise came back.  I could identify when it happens. If the ipod is off and I plug the usb cable, itunes starts and the ipod turn on, then the first thing it do is connected to the wifi network, then syncronizations began and the strange noise is heard.
    Some idea?
Do you think it would be neccesary to visit an apple store to solve it. My ipod is even covered by warranty.
    Thank you very much.

    Hey DerikK,

  • Strange Noise on Burned Cd from Itunes

I have had itunes for well over a year now, and have never had a problem like this so far.
It seems just lately, in the past 3 weeks, when I make an audio cd with purchased itunes music, there is a strange noise on random tracks when I play the cd in my car.
I have always purchased albums off itunes store, and then created a playlists of them and burned discs using itunes. It has always worked perfectly. It is also my way of backing up my music.
I bought 3 albums in the past 3 weeks- Every song plays fine on itunes, and on my ipod, but when I burn the songs onto a disc and play it in my car, the song will start playing normally, and then at random times in the songs a loud obnoxious noise blasts through my speakers and scares the crap out of me, but only for a second, then it continues playing normally. It seems to be only random tracks too. The first cd I made, it was tracks 2, 6, and 12. Then I just bought another album, and burned it to disc, and same thing, only different tracks this time, 4, 5, and 10. It's completely random and there is nothing wrong with the discs I am using. I can't for the life of me think of what could be wrong.
Anyone having a similar issue? Any suggestions?
    Thanks!
    Renee

  • I have a strange noise coming from within my 2011 iMac Desktop.

I have a strange noise coming from within my 2011 iMac Desktop. This started 1 week ago and is intermittent. It sounds like an electronic drill. I have removed all external connections and powered up the Mac and just left  it running. Some 2 hours later the noise started. On hitting the space bar on the keyboard the noise stopped. I did a similar test and the noise started within 2 minutes so I have discounted any overheating issues.
With keyboard activity there is an increase in the frequency of this fault.
If you open safari when the fault reappears the URL web link text starts flashing at the same frequency as the noise. This fault can appear with or without the noise.
I’ve been typing these details out on Word and as soon as I went to save  the document the noise started  and as soon as I hit the OK option in the save window the noise ceased.
    Any thoughts will be appreciated.

I think this issue might be related to my wireless Keyboard. have just noticed that certain combinations of keys do not work. The Right hand shift + ? didn't work but started this noise. Hit another key and the noise stopped Also I have problems using the right hand shift key with the letters  Y, H & N , they don't work and are all in line.
So I'm taking the keyboard back to John Lewis. it will be easier to carry that the screen !!

  • Stranger noise

    Hi,
I new user here. I´ve IMac two weeks ago, but with question. When my IMac Start-up the superdrive does a stranger noise. This noise is normal or need exist update in OS X 10.5 leopard?
    Regards

    Hi!
I've found a youtube movie of a Macbook Superdrive loading a disk: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjdXPOy8Ocw&feature=related
If the sound of your iMac is anything like this when you boot, it means that your SuperDrive is trying to see whether you have a disk inserted or not. It's the slot-loading mechanism that makes that sound.
    Yes it is perfectly normal
    Hope this helped!
    Kind regards,
