Strange noise on wake/power on

Hi everyone,
After about 2 months of usage I noticed that my rMBP emits a wierd, spin-like noise from below the right side of the keyboard when waking from sleep or on power on.
I've uploaded a sample I recorded with my iPod: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwWAoQidwCwbWGtYUFpjZF9FQ1E/edit?usp=sharing
Please turn on your volume when listening the sample as it's a bit low and the sound only lasts about half a second. You can hear it at the beginning of the file.
Possibly the problem was present on purchase, but the first time I've noticed it was a few weeks ago.
Is this noise normal? Anyone else had a similar experience?
Thank you!

Thanks for your reply Barry,
I also suspected the fan, as there are no other moving parts in the computer.
It seems strange though that it always starts with a loud spin regardless of temperature.

  • MacBook optical drive has started making noises at wake and restart

This MacBook is about 5 months old and the optical drive has just started making noises at wake from sleep, or at restart. There is no disc loaded in the drive, but the noise is as though a disc has been inserted in the drive and it is attempting to read it. This goes on for about 5 to 10 seconds, then stops.
The optical drive seems to work fine, reads CDs and DVDs no problem. This isn't a glaring issue, I'm just trying to determine if it is the precursor to a mechanical problem, or is possibly some sort of software glitch. Thanks for help if this rings a bell with anyone.

I posted this to a different thread earlier today. I will add that most of the experience I've had with this issue is in Tiger or Leopard. I don't think I've seen it yet with Snow Leopard. My instincts tell me it is more of a hardware issue than a software/OS issue. (Just my $0.02.)
I have seen this many times. (I support 100+ Mac Laptops, most are 13" MacBooks.)
Just to clarify, MacBook optical drives do normally make some quiet noises when waking from sleep.
When there is a CD or DVD in the drive, there are some soft sounds, and then you hear the disc spin up. When there is not a disc in the drive you hear a different sound. I assume it is relating to checking for a disc in the drive. To me, it sounds exactly the same as the quiet sounds you hear right before the "Good Chime" when you power up.
BUT, sometimes MacBooks make a much louder noise, that is similar the sound you hear when you insert or eject a CD or DVD, only sort of "doubled". Usually you hear it when waking from sleep, but I have also experienced it happen intermittently when the MacBook is turned on, under normal use, or not being used (but not sleeping or waking from sleep).
In the past, I have sometime cured it with a reset of the SMC and PRAM. This has not always worked. I have also seen it disappear after inserting a disc into the drive. Most of the time, the sound has returned some time later. I have called Apple on this issue several times, and sent the MacBook in for repair. My memory is that they have replaced the optical drive under AppleCare.
I will add that I have recently seen this Knowledge Base Article (below), with instructions for "resetting" the optical drive on a MacBook Pro, but it did work for me on a MacBook 13". Insert a disc halfway, take it back out, then put it in all the way.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2839
Past experience tells me not to be surprised if the noise resurfaces. My advice is call Apple if you have AppleCare, or if the MacBook is under one year old.
    Good Luck.

  • Geforce 5900 makes strange noises!

I've just bought MSI GeForce 5900 and installed it in my computer (MSI KT3 Ultra2 main board).
The graphic card seems to be working okay, when it comes to performance and stuff like that, but the card is making some strange noises. The problem occurs when I'm scrolling the window of Internet Explorer by using my mouse or keyboard up/down buttons. Then I hear these (hard to describe) "scratchy" sounds coming from my card   !
What can be the cause of this?
I've searched the internet for some answers, and I actually found couple of people having the same/similar problem with their 5900 / 5900 Ultra cards (different manifacturers), and they don't have any clue how to solve this.
Did anyone here experience the similar problem, and most important - do you know the cure?
This is just great. I wasn't satisfied with Radeon 9600XT because of its crappy drivers, and now that I returned it and got myself this nVidia card, I got these problems instead. I sure hope I'll not be forced to return this one as well. Please help, or I'm gonna get crazy soon.
    Thanks in advance!

Well, I've found several people with the same problem, so I don't think something is "wrong" with my card in particular. I've partially managed to disable these sounds (disabling "Smooth scrolling" in IE), which, by the way, are not THAT annoying, and I'm gonna do some couple more tricks until I finally decide whether I'm going to keep the card or not.
If I decide to NOT to keep it, I'll probably swap it for a FX 5700 Ultra.
I'm sorry, but the FX 5600 (ultra?) that you are suggesting, simply has no horse power enough to handle the tasks that I'm exlusively need a graphic card for - GAMING.

  • Mega 865 - Strange Noise !

When i power up my Mega 865 I get a strange noise, like a fan is working over time, it only happens on the initial power up !!
would it be the fan on the ICH5 chipset fan
I haven't explained this very well because i cant
Has anyone heard/had of/this problem before - i've tested everything else (HD, optical drive, PSU, CPU Fans) and the
noise isnt coming from there - im a bit concerned
    Help please

Now the problems begin - I'm having trouble removing the heatsink & fan (I assume Ineed to remove this to get at the Chipset fan)
I think the CPU is sticking to the bottom of the heatsink
    nothing but problems

  • My fan makes loud and very strange noises.

    Hi again,
My fan makes loud and very strange noises. Is there any cure for that?
    Thank you!
    Markus

Hmm... that is strange. There are a couple reasons that I can think of.
First, go to System Preferences -> Energy Saver -> Processor Performance. See what its set to. If it is currently set to Highest, your fan could be going more often. Turn it down to Reduced or Automatic. Note if there is any difference.
Secondly, are you all up to date on software updates? The last step was to see if it was a software issue. If it isn't, then you probably have a defective fan. AppleCare?
Now, you would open your PowerBook. Look in the Apple docs (Support - Manuals) to find how to do it for yourself, or take it to a shop or Apple Store and have them do it. Safest option.
Look at your fan. Has it come free of the anchor and is hitting against the wall or fan surround?
Lastly, try keeping the PowerBook in a open, ventilated area. The fan will power up less if the computer stays cooler. For a possibly irritating but possibly helpful option, purchase a product that lifts the PowerBook off your lap or desk. I think Rain Design makes a good one.
    Good luck!

  • MBP 1,1: strange noises, battery failure

My MBP 1,1 (SL, 64GB Samsung SSD) recently started to make strange noises from within. It's hard to decribe, but it sounds like rapid crackling, like a hard disk put into overdrive (however a SSD is installed). Along with that, there's a high-pitched monotonous  sound.
The noise is the loudest somewhere between the ExpressCard cage and the battery multiconnector cable.
Further, when the Mac is running solely on  battery power (without the MagSafe being connected), power suddenly goes off without any warning. Although fully charged the battery LED blinks indicating it's empty.
    What I tried so far:
    - SMC reset
    - deleted power management plist
    - deleted caches
    - AHT - ok!
    - safe boot
    - second battery
    - checked connectors inside
    - disconnected fans
What could that be? My guess is the I/O-Board. Or could a malfunctioning logicboard produce such sounds?
    Thanks!

Since computers should not be making crackling sounds, that would be a good candidate to backup all of your data and have the apple techs at the genius bar run some diagnostics to see what is not working right.  Could be a loose connection that does not show up on AHT.

  • Strange noise when downloading (but in hardware)

Hi, this is the most paranoid question from me ever... so be patient please...
I have this problem, I've recently noticed that sometimes my macbook pro (2010 i7) is making strange noise (it is not hardrive, not fans), it is like the old TVs without any signal, or analog monitors long time in stanby mode (not all, but low end ones). It is close to this sound that I found on youtube, but this isn't my video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOjgdx-aKsE
This strange sound I've got with downloading some files from internet, sound came from place where is MagSafe, but I don't think it is it, 'cause that is when is plugged in and olso plugged out (power cord). It is maybe one centimeter under MagSafe... But when I look at the picture of macbook pro dissassembled, Airport Express is close to it.
I don't know, if that sound will be with ethernet downloading, but over wifi it is. But the most strangest thing is, when I download some file (like podcast) in iTunes, wierd sound will make, also with downloading files with jDownloader... BUT not with downloading files with Safari (or Firefox) ... 64bit over 32 bit? Safari and jDownloader are 64bit, iTunes and Firefox I have 32 bit...
    Could you tell me why?
    Thanks for ANY response.
    Have a nice day

    hello,
same white noise from the speakers on my macbook. volume beeps fine but in between beeps i hear white noise.
    happens with youtube vids.
very intermittent. seems like a software issue to me.
reinstalled leopard, went away for a few days but it's back now.

  • Im from argentina and i got a problem with my earphone of the iphone 4s when i make a call i earphone or speaker make and strange noise or like an interference during the call and when i finish the call still doing the same noise and i dont know why?

my eraphone of my iphone 4s white unlocked make strange noises during the call and still doing the noise like an interference or saturing the spekaer

This is a common problem with iPhone 4s (and IOS 5)  There isn't ' anything you can do about it, so you're best bet is to go down to the store and get an exchange. If you have an older iPhone (3gs/4) roll back your update from IOS 5 to IOS 4.

  • AP54G generates a strange noise while operating

    Hello guys!
Is that normal, that my MSI AP54G Access Point generates a silent, strange noise (like a TV when there's no signal), while it is operating? I noticed it one or two days ago and I don't know, whether it is a normal thing or not. Ummm... I think, I have to tell you, that some days ago I dropped the AP (accidentally) from about one meter high... so I think that can be the reason why the AP emits such a strange noise. Anyway, it is operating perfectly, it has a very strong and stable signal and I'm fully satisfied with it, but I'm afraid, that this noise could cause some trouble in the future, for example burn down the AP or even explode it?
    Thanks for your help!
    Greetings:
    Gery

    Thanks... you are very helpful...
Don't you guys use this AP? I'm the only one, who uses it? Well, I think not.
And what about you guys working for MSI?? You don't read the forum of your own company??

  • Burned CD's: strange noise on inner tracks

    Hi everybody,
since I upgraded my system with a S-ATA DVD burner, I get a strange issue when I write my playlists to CD-R's.
The burned disc has got a persistent noise on the inner tracks and the more the track number raises the more I can hear the noise.
It's not like static or something like that.
It's a weird looping sound that accompanies the track from start to end.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Kind regards

Hi I'm having the same problem here. I've been using iTunes for ages now. Very strange. I've tried burning via another CR Rwiter but still the same strange noise and on different places. Lookst like a software bug to me. Anybody got lucky solving this?

  • My macbook (2009) keeps making strange noises. What to do?

Yesterday, my macbook started to make strange noises. A little scratchy noise. Like there's somthing wrong with the Fan or something.
I called Apple Support, but they told me i had to reset the SMC and PRAM/NVRAM. I triend, but the noise is still there.
Does anyone know what to do?? Is it bad?
    Its a really annoying sound.

It could be the fan.....or the hard drive.....this is a link to a data recovery firm that has posted the various sounds made by failing hard drives.......
    datacent.com/hard_drive_sounds.php
......make sure your data is backed now in case the hard drive is failing.....

  • Strange noise from Touch ID sensor on iPhone 6

I dont know how I found that out, but try laying your finger on the home button on your iphone 6 and listen closely. I hear a strange ticking noise, like its generated by some kind of voltage?! Like the sparking of the gas-cooker. And if you lay your finger on the ring around the button you can hear that noise more frequent/quicker. Any idea about this?

WHen I noticed this strange noise I made some search on google and found only one post about the same problem and an answer that confirmed the sound on another device so I'm not the only one in this case. Strange, but the page I found yesterday is not available today, the post has been deleted I'm afraid they think I'm stupid if I take back the phone with this problem, because the sound has no effect on the phone, its working properly. But I want to know what can cause this...
