Strange nop(?) code in java.awt.Dialog

Can anyone give some explanation for the following code?
private void hideAndDisposeHandler() {
    if (keepBlocking) {
        synchronized (getTreeLock()) {
            keepBlocking = false;
            EventQueue.invokeLater(new Runnable(){ public void run() {} });
            //what was that for???
            getTreeLock().notifyAll();
} It seems some strange hacks are going on out there.
Thanks,
Dimitris

It's also possible that the Runnable is a fence that
prevents AWTEvents from being coalesced into one
another from opposite sides. Was this from src.zip, or
did you decompile the class file? Is the comment
theirs, or yours? I would have expected to see a
comment about it in their code.I looked at the java src from the src.zip. You can also get the real java src with the C code to build your own JRE, but it's the same as the code they include with the JDK.
This comment is mine as they don't provide it (though they should, what they are doing is not obvious). It's just a guess, but from the code I'd say that it' the goal. The invokeLater function causes a chain reaction that causes all currently pending events to be executed. Normally, you would call this from another thread, and it would be executed non-sync with your current thread. If you execute it from the event queue thread then it seems that all events are flushed and then your functionality is run.
The event queue system has it's good and bad points, it's easy to start coding, but you really can't do a lot of custom processing of events. Modal dialogs are one thing that they had to do a strange hack to get to work correctly. Even then, they don't always work correctly. Multiple modal dialogs tend to mess up.

  • Java.awt.Dialog in Java 1.6 has a memory leak

    When a modal Dialog opens a modal sub-dialog, the Dialog stays in memory after both the sub-dialog and the Dialog itself is disposed.
    The field that contains the leaked object is Dialog.modalDialogs (static). The methods which causes the leak are Dialog.modalHide and Dialog.modalShow.
    Whenever a modal Dialog is opened, Dialog.modalShow is called, and adds itself to Dialog.modalDialogs.
    When it closes, Dialog.modalHide is called and removes one copy of itself from Dialog.modalDialogs. Then Dialog.modalShow is called on all previously blocked modal dialogs. When the sub-dialog is opened and closed, Dialog.modalDialogs contains two references to the main Dialog, and only one of them is removed when Dialog.modalHide for that Dialog is called.
    To detect the leak, just put a break point in Dialog.modalHide, after modalDialogs.remove(this);. When opening a Dialog and closing it without opening a sub-dialog, the Dialog.modalDialogs field should be empty. When a sub-dialog was opened and closed before the main Dialog is closed, the Dialog.modalDialogs field contains a reference to the disposed main Dialog.
    This leak does not exist in 1.5.0_10 (no Dialog.modalDialogs field). I have searched the bug database, but I have not found this bug there. Could anyone confirm this?
    A simple code to reproduce the leak:
    import java.awt.Dimension;
    import java.awt.Toolkit;
    import java.awt.event.ActionEvent;
    import java.awt.event.ActionListener;
    import java.awt.event.WindowEvent;
    import javax.swing.JButton;
    import javax.swing.JFrame;
    import javax.swing.JOptionPane;
    public class Test {
       public static void main(String[] args) {
          final JFrame frame = new JFrame() {
             protected void processWindowEvent(WindowEvent e) {
                super.processWindowEvent(e);
                if (e.getID() == WindowEvent.WINDOW_CLOSING) {
                   System.exit(0);
          JButton button = new JButton("Dialog");
          button.addActionListener(new ActionListener() {
             public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent aE) {
                JButton subButton = new JButton("SubDialog");
                subButton.addActionListener(new ActionListener() {
                   public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent aE) {
                      JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(frame, "SubDialog");
                JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(frame, subButton);
          frame.getContentPane().add(button);
          frame.pack();
          // Center the window
          Dimension screenSize = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getScreenSize();
          Dimension frameSize = frame.getSize();
          if (frameSize.height > screenSize.height) {
             frameSize.height = screenSize.height;
          if (frameSize.width > screenSize.width) {
             frameSize.width = screenSize.width;
          frame.setLocation((screenSize.width - frameSize.width) / 2,
                (screenSize.height - frameSize.height) / 2);
          frame.setVisible(true);
    }

  • Useless code in java.awt.image.SampleModel.java?

    Hey there,
    i just looked up the sourcecode of java.awt.image.SampleModel.java in JDK 6
    I discovered two issues i'd like to discuss.
    1) on lines 736 to 739 this code is stated:
    if (iArray != null)
    pixels = iArray;
    else
    pixels = new int[numBands * w * h];
    I asked myself, why does this code exist? while the getPixels() method is overwritten twice by double[] getPixels() and float[] getPixels, it is impossible to reach the part of the java code that initializes the pixels-array. One could only step into that line if "null" is given for the i/d/fArray-parameter. but if one would do so, the Java parser couldn't determine, which method is to use. so this part of code is just useless IMHO.
    the java developers could get a little more performance out of this method if the if statement would be cut out - especially when reading a lot of very small rasters
    or, on the other hand, they could replace this piece of code by an explicit bounds check.
    When somebody touches this code, i would appreciate it if the errormessage "index out of bounds!" could be rewritten to be a little more verbose, like: Index out of bounds(x=123; y=456, maxX=100, maxY=400)!(numbers are just examples)
    I hope i didn't miss something very basic and could help improving this class a little bit.
    2) the local variable Offset(line 734) is coded against code conventions which say, variables shall start with a lowercase letter. Offset obviously doesn't fit that convention.
    best regards
    kdot

    One could only step into that line if "null" is given for the i/d/fArray-parameter. but if one would do so, the Java parser couldn't determine, which method is to use. so this part of code is just useless IMHO. You can have
    sampleModel.getPixels(x,y,w,h,(int[]) null, dataBuffer);No ambiguity on which method to use.
    the local variable Offset(line 734) is coded against code conventions which say, variables shall start with a lowercase letter. Offset obviously doesn't fit that convention. You're correct, offset is against coding conventions. So are many other examples scattered throughout the jdk source code. For example, Hashtable should be called HashTable. In some cases the coding conventions might not have been established when the original code was written. In other cases it might have been human error. In yet other cases the conventions were probably ignored. The person who wrote the SampleModel class did so some 10+ years ago (Java 1.2). Who knows what he/she was thinking at the time, and in all honesty - does it really matter in this case?
    Did you know there are some classes that declare unused local variables (ahem ColorConvertOp)? Some also have unused imports ( *** cough *** BufferedImage *** cough *** ). In essence, the jdk source code is not the epidemy of code correctness. But it's still pretty good.

  • Extends.java.awt.Window

    Hi I've tried the following below (/** My Code **/) and get a compilation error: Window is not public in java.awt.Window; cannot be accessed from outside package.
    I did set the JDK1.4 path in the autoexec.bat. The API 1.4 describes Window like:
    public class Window
    extends Container
    /** My Code **/
    import java.awt.*;
    class WarningWindow extends Window
    /** With the below code everything compiles **/
    import java.awt.*;
    class WarningWindow extends Container
    /** END My Code **/
    Can someone please tell me why I get this above error and how can I manage to import the Window class.
    Thank You
    L

    Hello,
    The problem is that Window constructor is not declared as public.
    But i don't know why JDK1.4 refuse that.
    By setting "package java.awt;" you'll access all these method but that is NOT a good solution (you should use Dialog, Frame or Container).
    But there is still something strange... Why JDK1.4 refuses compiling that ??????

  • Open type font "Myriad Pro" support in Java AWT

    Hi
    I have installed open type font "Myriad Pro" on my machine.
    When I use the following AWT APIs on jre 1.6, I dont get the open type font "Myriad Pro" in the font list.
    Code snippet
    java.awt.GraphicsEnvironment     ge = GraphicsEnvironment.getLocalGraphicsEnvironment();
    if (ge != null) {
         java.awt.Font[] fontList = ge.getAllFonts();
    The fontList variable doesnt have "Myriad Pro" font.
    My question is
    1) Is the open type font "Myriad Pro" supported by java AWT?
    2) Is there a workaround to get that particular font?
    Thanks
    Vikas

    When I print out the list of all the fonts java recognizes on my machine, all the otf fonts (about 70 of them) are missing including Myriad Pro. All the true type fonts show up. You might need to convert the Myriad Pro into a true type font to get it recognized in java.

But whilst that good I would like to know how I can make it tell the user something to the effect of "Your overweight" or "Your underweight". The if statement runs like this:
    if (wt > max)This forum doesn't quite handle <> properly. The greater and less than symbols. So above you will see > this is the html character code for a greater than symbol so please read it as such.
    And then if wt is greater than max then it will say "Your overweight".
    But I can't figure out how to include it in the above program. Becuase it won't run in paint, atleast it won't the way I have done it previously. So can you think of any other ways?
    Help much appreciated,
    Simon

  • Can I build a GUI application with SWING only without [import java.awt.*;]

    I have seen several threads (in forums), books and tutorials about SWING and I see that they all mix SWING with AWT (I mean they import both Swing and AWT in their code).
    The conclusion that comes out is:
    It is good to learn about SWING and forget AWT as it won't be supported later. I have decided to do so, and I never include <<import java.awt.*;>> in my code.
    But I see that you cannot do much without <<import java.awt.*;>>. For example this line which changes the background color:
    <<frame.getContentPane().setBackground(Color.red)>>
    works only with <<import java.awt.*;>>. I have seen that codes in this and other forums import awt to change the background. Why is that?
    After all, I wonder, what can I do;
    My question is, can I change the background (and of course do all other things listener, buttons etc) without using <<import java.awt.*;>>.
    I would like to avoid using <<import java.awt.*;>> and using awt since my program will not work later.
    In addition, I believe there is no point to learn awt, which later will not exist.
    I know, I must have misunderstood something. I would appreceate it very much, if anyone could give me even a short answer.
    Thank you in advance,
    JMelsi

    Since swing is a layer on top of awt, AWT will exist for as long as swing does.
    If sun does ever remove AWT they will have to replace it something else swing can layer on to and you will probably only have to replace your import statements.
    The main difference is the way there drawn to the screen.
    You can do custom drawing on swing components but you can't on AWT.
    If your using a desktop PC system it's probably best to use swing just in case you wish to do some custom drawing.
    awt uses less memory than swing and is faster but swing can be extended. awt comes only as standard.
    Say for example you wish to implement a JButton with a ProgressBar below the button text, this can be done with swing!

  • The method add() in java.awt.Container made me in confuse

    Here is my two java code file:
    //MyContainer.java
    package sam.gui;
    import java.awt.Dimension;
    import java.awt.Graphics;
    import javax.swing.JApplet;
    import javax.swing.JFrame;
    public class MyContainer extends JApplet {
         private MyButton[] myButton = new MyButton[2];
         private static int counter = 0;
         public MyContainer() {
              myButton[0] = new MyButton(5, 5, 200, 30);
              myButton[1] = new MyButton(5, 40, 200, 30);
              for (int i = 0; i < myButton.length; i++) {
                   add(myButton);
         public void paint(Graphics g) {
              for (int i = 0; i < myButton.length; i++) {
                   System.out.println("MyButton : " + (i+1));
                   myButton[i].draw(g);
         public static void main(String[] args) {
              MyContainer container = new MyContainer();
              JFrame f = new JFrame();
              f.getContentPane().add(container);
              f.pack();
              f.setSize(new Dimension(300, 200));
              f.show();
    //MyButton.java
    package sam.gui;
    import java.awt.Color;
    import java.awt.Component;
    import java.awt.Graphics;
    import java.awt.Graphics2D;
    public class MyButton extends Component {
         private Color m_rectColor = new Color(128, 73, 0);
         public MyButton(int x, int y, int width, int height) {
              setBounds(x, y, width, height);
         public void draw(Graphics g) {
              Graphics2D g2 = (Graphics2D)g;
              g.setColor(m_rectColor);
              g.fillRect(0, 0,
                        getBounds().width, getBounds().height);
              System.out.println("x = " + getBounds().x);
              System.out.println("y = " + getBounds().y);
              System.out.println("width = " + getBounds().width);
              System.out.println("height = " + getBounds().height);
    I thinked the runned result should be below:
    MyButton : 1
    x = 5
    y = 5
    width = 200
    height = 30
    MyButton : 2
    x = 5
    y = 40
    width = 200
    height = 30But in fact, its result is here:
    MyButton : 1
    x = 5
    y = 5
    width = 200
    height = 30
    MyButton : 2
    x = 0
    y = 0
    width = 292
    height = 173I don't know why the result would like this? I have used add(...) method to add two component MyButton to the container MyContainer, But the bounds of the second component is not I want.
    So this problem made me go into confuse.

    You need to learn how layout managers work. The default layout manager of a JApplet and JFrame is BorderLayout .

  • Custom graphics in java.awt.ScrollPane

    Hi all,
    I have to draw a custom created image in a scroll pane. As the image is very large I want to display it in a scroll pane. As parts of the image may change within seconds, and drawing the whole image is very time consuming (several seconds) I want to draw only the part of the image that is currently visible to the user.
    My idea: creating a new class that extends from java.awt.ScrollPane, overwrite the paint(Graphics) method and do the drawings inside. Unfortunately, it does not work. The background of the scoll pane is blue, but it does not show the red box (the current viewport is not shown in red).
    Below please find the source code that I am using:
    package graphics;
    import java.awt.Color;
    import java.awt.Graphics;
    import java.awt.ScrollPane;
    import java.awt.event.AdjustmentEvent;
    public class CMyComponent extends ScrollPane {
         /** <p>Listener to force a component to repaint when a scroll bar changes its
          * position.</p>
         private final class ScrollBarAdjustmentListener implements java.awt.event.AdjustmentListener {

              public void adjustmentValueChanged(AdjustmentEvent e) { m_Target.paint(m_Target.getGraphics()); }
         public CMyComponent() {
              // Ensure that the component repaints upon changing of the scroll bars
              ScrollBarAdjustmentListener sbal = new ScrollBarAdjustmentListener(this);
              getHAdjustable().addAdjustmentListener(sbal);
              getVAdjustable().addAdjustmentListener(sbal);
         public void paint(Graphics g) {
              setBackground(Color.BLUE);
              g.setColor(Color.RED);
              g.fillRect(getScrollPosition().x, getScrollPosition().y, getViewportSize().width, getViewportSize().height);
         public final static void main(String[] args) {
              java.awt.Frame f = new java.awt.Frame();
              f.add(new CMyComponent());
              f.pack();
              f.setVisible(true);
    }

    Dear all,
    I used the last days and tried several things. I think now I have a quite good working solution (just one bug remains) and it is very performant. To give others a chance to see what I have done I post the source code of the main class (a canvas drawing and implementing scrolling) here. As soon as the sourceforge project is accepted, I will publish the whole sources at there. Enjoy. And if you have some idea for my last bug in getElementAtPixel(Point), then please tell me.

  • Bug in java.awt.geom.Rectangle2D.contains method

    I cannot understand why not awt.geom.Rectangle2D.contains() return the right value??? Or maybe i dont understand it properly. Check out this code snippet
    import java.awt.geom.*;
    public class Test
        public static void main(String[] args)
           //Rectangle has a width of 2 and a height of 2 and starts drawing on cordinate 1,1
           Rectangle2D rect = new Rectangle2D.Double(1,1,2,2);
           if (rect.contains(1,3))
               System.out.println("The cordinate is inside rectangle");
           else
               System.out.println("The cordinate is NOT NOT NOT inside rectangle");
    }The cordinate (1,3) is clearly contained in the rectangle or not?
    When you change the cordinate to (1,1) the method works correctly, so why diesnt it work right with the cordinate (1,3). Can somebody please enlight me?

    The cordinate (1,3) is clearly contained in the rectangle or not?Actually, it's a matter of opinion whether a point on the perimeter of a shape is considered contained in the shape or not. This is the implementation of java.awt.geom.Rectangle2D.contains (double x, double y)   public boolean contains(double x, double y) {
         double x0 = getX();
         double y0 = getY();
         return (x >= x0 &&
              y >= y0 &&
              x < x0 + getWidth() &&
              y < y0 + getHeight());
        }As can be seen from the code, the design team adopted a philosophy of returning false for coordinates that lie along the bottom and right sides of the Rectangle.
    If you require different behavior, you can always extend Rectangle2D.Double and override the methodimport java.awt.geom.Rectangle2D;
    public class Test extends Rectangle2D.Double {
        public Test (double x, double y, double w, double h) {
            super (x, y, w, h);
        public boolean contains (double x, double y) {
            double x0 = getX ();
            double y0 = getY ();
            return (x >= x0 &&
                    y >= y0 &&
                    x <= x0 + getWidth () &&
                    y <= y0 + getHeight ());
        public static void main (String[] args) {
            //Rectangle has a width of 2 and a height of 2 and starts drawing on cordinate 1,1
            Rectangle2D rect = new Test (1, 1, 2, 2);
            //Rectangle2D rect = new Rectangle2D.Double (1, 1, 2, 2);
            if (rect.contains (1,3))
                System.out.println ("The cordinate is inside rectangle");
            else
                System.out.println ("The cordinate is NOT inside rectangle");
    }db

  • Focus in java.awt.robot

    A couple of hours ago I read about java.awt.robot and I thought it was really cool.
    Right now I have a working code that presses a couple of key and uses a listener to put them in the "messages" area of Borland JBuilder.
    Is there any way to get these keys to be typed globally?
    (ie. other programs read them as if the user was typing them.)
    I haven't had much time to test out things like focus of the programs or messing with priorities in the task manager but any help would be appreciated =]
    BTW, this isnt a hacking thing....just trying to make a program to automate tasks on my computer :)
    ~Thanks

    Is there any way to get these keys to be typed
    globally? Sure. The keys typed by robot can be received by other non-java apps.
    I haven't had much time to test out things like focus
    of the programs or messing with priorities in theor what about focus? Using the robot it's just like you'd normally focus on something; you click.
    task manager but any help would be appreciated =]priorities in the task manager? In general you can't do anything in java about how the task manager prioritizes jobs. You can make your own internal threads higher or lower priority tho.

  • Problem in java.awt.print

    Hi here is my code .
    I am generating page dynamically and passing to printer.
    Printing Functionalities working file. But I am taking some data from database (Access). And in this code for example i have 4 records in Database and i am generating 4 pages (each page for resord).
    I am getting only 2 records. And for other two records i am getting blank page.
    Reason is My ResultSet object is moving to next record twice.
    I mean if i have 6 records i get only 3 pages.
    If i have 10 records i get only 5 pages and If i have 1 record i dont get any page.
    How shall i solve this problem.
    Thanx in advance.

    Unfortunately I'm always getting
