Strange Outline Appears

We have a machine (G5) that randomly makes a black outline around file names, objects, images in PS, in the finder and what-have-you. Please see the links provided for screen shots. Any clue why this is happening? This machine is running 10.4.7.

  • Strange Folders Appear in Root Directory

After a clean install of 10.5 on a MacBook and MacBook Pro, and then applying all of the Software Update recommended updates, I'm noticing some strange folders appear in my root directory.
On the MacBook Pro, I now have a Developer folder with Applet Launcher and Jar Bundler inside. Obviously, these are Java tools, but I'm not sure what installed them. I do not have any developer tools installed on this machine.
On the MacBook, I'm seeing links to the Unix directories bin, sbin, etc, and so forth in the root folder. Again, not sure how they got there, or what app may have created them.
Both the MacBook Pro and MacBook have essentially the same applications and updates applied, so I'm at a loss as to why there's the inconsistency.
    Thanks,
    JKG

Something went awry during the installation that has made some invisible items visible. The following outlines how to fix the problem. It's a bit complicated:
It's a bit of a confusion in Leopard. Start by downloading Pacifist at VersionTracker or MacUpdate. Open Pacifist.
Insert your Leopard DVD into the optical drive. Select Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu and enter:
    /Volumes/Mac OS X Install DVD/System/Installation/Packages/
Click on the Go button. Locate the OSInstall.pkg file and drag it to the Pacifist window. Click on the Resources tab in the Pacifist list window. Open the Scripts folder and locate the hidden_MacOS9 file and click on the Extract to icon in the Pacifist toolbar. I would extract it the the /usr/sbin/ directory. Now Open the Tools folder and locate the SetHidden command. Select it and click on the Extract to icon in the Pacifist toolbar. Extract it also to the /usr/sbin/ directory.
Now you can quit Pacifist. Open the Terminal app in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following commands pressing RETURN after each:
    cd /usr/sbin
    sudo ./SetHidden / hidden_MacOS9
Enter your password which will not be echoed.

Strange symbols appear on my desktop, producing even stranger results!

These symbols are for short cuts. could be a command to move text insertion point to beginning of document or if you have been in system preferences keyboard and clicked on the modifier key and set one of the options it would be for setting cap lock. Don't know why you are showing a screen  shot of it. Have you clicked on it. Have you been doing any work with documents. You could go to disk utilities and repair permissions or do an pram reset. Command/Option?P/R while holding down the power button for three chimes and release.

  • Strange lines appearing behind itunes

I went away for the holidays, and when I got back I booted up my 2006 iMac. Today for the first time, there are strange lines appearing behind iTunes whenever it is open but not the active window. I tried quitting and restarting iTunes, but the lines come back. I wish I could upload a screen shot of what this looks like on my desktop, it's very weird. It does not happen behind any other program window. Only iTunes. The lines appear as if they are extensions of the iTunes window formatting, in line with the side bars, etc. Has anyone else experienced this? Any tips for getting it to quit?

I just wanted to add that I am also seeing the same problem: strange lines around the borders of the iTunes window. The most obvious ones are a set of four vertical lines running parallel to both sides of the iTunes window, although there are other strange bits as well, mostly around the top corners of the window, as well as a single thin horizontal line above the top of the iTunes window. These unusual lines started appearing "out of the blue" sometime in the past few weeks -- as in, not right after an update or any other configuration change to my mac... The only change I can say I did recently was to update to OS 10.6.6, although I know others who are running 10.6.6 and aren't having this issue with iTunes. I also wanted to add that in my case, I only see these strange lines when iTunes is the active window. Further to that, updating to iTunes 10.1.2 does not fix the problem, unfortunately.

  • Strange frames appear in exported video

Okay, I have a DV NTSC sequence in FCP 6.0 with some 320x240 dv clips and some 640x480 qt files made from iphoto slideshows. When I export>quicktime movie>current settings, the resulting file has some random frames with bright colors in the 'tv snow' pattern with a trace of the intended image in there. When I repeat, the anomalous frames appear in the same locations. Any ideas, fellas?

let me add: the sequence is 320x240. In trying to work around, I can export to quicktime conversion without the strange frames appearing. Also, I've reimported the qt version back into a FCP timeline and tried to ripple delete them out, but FCP quits repeatedly when I scroll onto the weird frames (6 times).

  • Strange dashes appear on screen

have had no issues with my system.  came back from screensave to the attached screenshot.  strange dashes appear all over screen, every program, and move when moving cursor or typing, etc.
have tried rebooting, changing resolution back & forth, no change.
    has anyone seen this??

    They advised me to:
    * Reset SMC.
    * Reset NVRAM.
Of course neither of these helped.  Their advice is to take it to the nearest store, which is 45 minutes away.  I'm asking the community if anyone has seen anything like this before and if so what was the outcome?  The support agent did remote view my computer and saw the marks, which verifies that it is software and not display-related.
Graphics card?  Is that even replaceable in this model iMac?

  • Strange things appears suddenly in the iPhone 3GS

    Hi
I am writing in this forum because something strange occurs with my iPhone 3GS, not always. Suddenly, when I have the iPhone locked, a strange screen appears.
    http://yfrog.com/5lalnj
Anybody knows what does it means? It goes by as the same quickness than it appears.

This is known as "flash" or "class 0" sms ot text. The message appears directly on the screen and isn't saved in the sms message log. It is utilized by some network administrators and sometimes by others if they know the right codes. Not all cell networks support them and iPhones sometimes don't handle them properly.

  • Please help to get rid of this strange rectangle appearing on interface!

Hi, my iMac is a brand new which I have purchased Feb 18th, 2009.
The problem is that there is a strange rectangle (black outlined, empty filled) keeps appearing on interface. It appears right now around the red circle button that closes this window. On desktop, it appears around the item I select. When I try to print out a file on Adobe Illustrator, it shows up on the dialogue panel. It just won't go away.
If anyone could help me getting rid of this annoying rectangle, my life will be saved!

It sounds like you may have VoiceOver turned ON. If you have your volume un-muted, you may also hear the computer talking to you.
It is controlled from System Preferences +Universal Access+ pane Seeing tab. Where it says VoiceOver, turn it OFF if it got turned ON inadvertently (probably by fitting Command-F5).

  • A box with a blue outline appeared in my bookmark drop-down menu. I can't get rid of it, and it obstructs the view of the bookmarks as I scroll up or down. Help!

I was trying to bookmark a page, using the "Choose" menu in the bookmarks. I must have touched a key by accident, and a box with a blue outline & the name of one of my folders appeared in my bookmark drop-down menu. At first the box contained the folder name, then I was trying to delete the box, and erase the name, thinking it might get rid of the box, but it didn't. I can't get rid of this box! It obstructs the view of what is underneath. It stays in the same position as I scroll up & down in the drop-down menu, and it hides what is underneath. Please help me get rid of this box. It is driving me crazy! Thanks!

  • Strange folders appearing in "Save As" dialog box

    Hello
    *Description of Problem or Question:
If you open a Web Intelligence report that has been sent to you from your Inbox I have noticed there are "extra" folders I wouldn't expect to see. As an administrator and can see the following extra "strange" folders:
    Categories
    Inboxes
    Internal Storage Folder
    Personal Categories
    Root Folder
    Temporary Storage
    User Folders
    (Please see attached screenshot)
As a non-admin user I can only see the extra folder "Root Folder".
This does look odd for a non-admin user as they see the same folder structure twice. E.g:
    Public Folders
    >>Finance Reports
    >>Operations Reports
    >>Root Folder
    >>>>>Finance Reports
    >>>>>Operations Reports
Any ideas on how to hide these folders from the "save as" dialog box?
It does only seems to happen if a report is opened from a users Inbox.

Sorry I wasn't clear! When I try to save a 'PDF' file the "save as" dialog box opens. At the bottom the 'file name'is listed and below that it says, "save as type". You then pick what file type you want, like Adobe Reader for PDF. It used to say Adobe Reader as one of the choices but when I downloaded "Rocket PDF" it only says "Rocket PDF or "all files" as the only choices to save the document, no more Adobe Reader as a choice. I have deleted Rocket PDF and under 'default programs (Start button) I have set the "Pdf. files to open with Adobe Reader. Rocket PDF is still listed or' all files', nothing else! How can I get Adobe Reader as a choice back in the 'save as type' box?
    Thanks for any help.

  • Strange Files Appear on Desktop  and I Have No Idea Why or What They Do.

    Hello all,
For the past long while strange '.part' and '.pdf' files started appearing on my desktop and I have no idea why, how, or what they do/are for!
The files are just random strings of letters and numbers sometimes ending in .pdf, sometimes .part, sometimes both. Here is an example:
    J0f0IS2p.jpg.part
    qtz0MxdS.ai.part
    _Z8WxpbN.pdf.part
My uniformed guess thinks it has something to do with Firefox and when I download something. I recently downloaded an Adobe Illustrator file from my email, and 'qtz0MxdS.ai.part' appeared on my desktop. it has an '.ai' in it. The '.pdf' files, I think, appear when I download .pdfs using Firefox.
Does anyone know why this happens and how I can stop it? I dont think/hope its not a serious issue or bug but it does get tedious deleting all these weird files. Thanks for your time!!
    Best,
    -Reid

They occur when a Web-browser like firefox is the downloading a file. Some Web browsers download files with a different name than change to the real name when the download completes. having these funny names on your desktop means that the download did not complete or the download is presently occurring.
In firefox as you can press: command-j to see downloaded manager

  • Magenta outline appears after converting to a PDF file from Photshop

    Hi Folks,
I have an image that I worked on in CS6 Extended, and then I flattened the layers, and 'saved-as' a PDF file. Then I opened the pdf file and there's a magenta colored outline going around the entire border of the image.
Why is that? I can't remeber that happening anytime before now but I will say that I did mess around with the Reader tools and Nav bar settings not too long ago. Did i set something off that I shouldn't have?
I have the absolute latest version of PDF Reader, (updated on 5-26-13).
    Thank You, Rich
    Windows 7 64 bit, 8gb Ram, i7-2600k 5.Ghz, ATI HD 7850PE, 700W PSU, etc, etc.

No, as I said, I flattened all the layers but I really should have said that the duplicate, invisable layer, was discarded in the save-as process. I actually made a hue alteration and I always start with making a duplicate layer so I have something to campare it to after I made the change, (before/after).
In fact, I don't know why they moved this to the Photoshop section. This has not been determined to be a PS related problem because the problem is in the way Reader is displaying the image after it is "Saved as".
The same image doesn't have that magenta border when saved as a jpg or tiff, etc.
Oh, I just thought of something though; At one point I had turned on the quick guides. Those magenta lines that appear when your dragging a layer image to lay precisely over the other. When the two borders, (either the verticle, or Horizontal, or both), of the image on top, lines up with the bottom one, the line appears to indicate that you've lined up that plane.
I don't know if that made sense to you but I'm thinking that even though the line goes invisable when you release the mouse button, it may still be visable to some other programs like Reader after it's saved/converted.
Thanks for the 'memory jolt'. I'm going to check that theory out as soon as I can get back to it.
    Rich
