Strange pattern artifacts

I have been concentrating on newer images since getting LR and this does not happen with shots from my newer camera, but I went through some older images today and found something that wasn't there before LR. I am getting a strange pattern artifact, like a maze, when viewed at 1:1. It shows up in areas from mid and brighter and makes edges very jagged. These same images looked fine when using ACR 3.6 and earlier.

Maybe while previes were being built?

After it gets to the desktop things are really crashy and don't load properly, so a 3rd boot is needed.
After 3 reboots the problem goes away, so what ever it is I assume needs to warm up before it works right.
Its obviously hardware related, I suspect my logic board / GPU need to be replaced?
All this happens as soon as I move to Mexico where there are no Mac service places around!
Anyone know if mac will ship replacement parts for user serviceable components?

Unfortunately, this does have the look of a hardware problem, probably having to do with a graphics chip. Have you tried running the extended version of the Apple Hardware test? You might get an error code which would indicate where the problem is.
There is a way to contact Apple in Mexico--you might want to do that and see what options they can offer you:

  • Glitchy, moire pattern artifacts after exporting h.264

I just exported an h.264 1080p video and got these strange glitching artifacts at random places in video.  They hapen for about 1-2 minutes and then go away.
I checked the timeline and could find no pattern to the glitches.
Attached are a few snaps of what Im looking at.
Im exporting at the correct framerate.
Im using vimeo's preset for 1080p video.
I upped the bitrate from 5mbps to 6mbps. (vimeo had it at 5)
Any ideas on what went wrong?  Should I make the bit rate higher?  Do the target and maximum bitrate need to be the same?  Or should max be slightly higher?
First time Ive had this happen...

The only way I know of for artifacts like that to be introduced is during shooting.  It's a factor of the details in the scene the the resolving power of the camera.

  • Intermittent problems with strange patterns on screen

My new (refurbed) 17in Intel Imac starts up periodically with a strange pattern running at 45 degrees across the entire screen (little multicolor boxes or rectangles) then the screen goes to all blue and freezes with no further activity. I have run the hardware test, reset pram and disk utility with no solutions. It will still boot up perfectly about every 3rd attempt. I'm running 10.4.10. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

To make sure that this is not software related, set it back to factory settings, without using a backup afterwards, described in this article:
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings - Apple Support
If the screen has still this pattern, the issue is hardware related and the phone needs to be serviced. In that case it might be enough to let Apple replace the screen.

  • Stuck with grey display and strange pattern!

Then the screen gets a strange pattern on the left side

But each time I retart I get the same thing, so impossible to open the computer

  • GTX 580 Twin Frozer II freezes with strange pattern

I bought a MSI N580GTX twin frozer II yesterday and have some strange problems. In DirectX 11 Applications (tested 3DMark11, Unigine Sanctuary DX11, Unigine Heaven DX11 Benchmark and Civ 5) after some time (~20 s in Sanctuary, 1 h in Civ 5) the app freezes (sound still playing) and the screen shows a strange pattern. Images can be found here: http://imgur.com/a/c7G8p. In the Civ 5 screenshot the pattern is a bit hidden but similar to the one in the sanctuary screenshot. Sometimes the app also freezes just like that without pattern or is showing strange fog. It seems that this appears only in (some) DX11 apps - not in OpenGL 4.x or lower versions of both. Furmark for example runs without problems. The card never got hotter than 70° up to now.
Does this indicate a hardware problem or could this be a driver issue?
I installed 266.58 drivers. Currently I am trying 267.31 but with no success. Before I had a GTX275 and never had any problems.

  • Strange digital artifacts at the end of each song importing via iTunes

I've tried a few variations on archive searches and wasn't able to find an answer to this: In ripping some of my CD's into iTunes (either Apple Lossless or WAV) I've been getting some very odd, brief digital artifacts at the end of each songs on a CD. This sounds like two or three seconds of an audio tape on fast forward. It only seems to happen on new releases (I cannot think of any older CD's it's occurred on). I just got a copy of Mary Gauthier's new album (great CD by the way) and it happened on that one, for example. I tried ripping it multiple times in Apple Lossless, and WAV (always in iTunes) and each and every time it created files where this strange artifact existed at the end of every song. I play the CD I ripped the files from and the artifact is not there. I have several CD's, most of them recent releases over the past five years, that do the exact same thing. Otherwise everything else functions perfectly an the bulk of my 700+ CD library has imported without a hiccup. Is this some kind of anti-piracy technology...or do I simply have some setting off in my itunes preferences (Error-Correction is on, WAV or Apple Lossless is always set to Automatic, have experimented with importing to startup disk and external disk-same results). The artifacts seem to always sound the same too...they never vary, except that they sound different from song-to-song, but the same if say, the first cut is played over again. They are always 2 seconds plus or minus, and always at the end of a cut (the final 2 seconds or so). They do transfer verbatim to my iPod, and also play via iTunes through my stereo.
Anyone have any clues what this might be?

As a follow up, I went to the Genius Bar for a bowl of Mensa Stew, but only got some tepid broth. Here's what transpired:
The girl I was speaking with suggested that the artifact was the software misinterpreting information between the cuts. It was only a theory. She had not heard of any other incidents to relay. First she suggested I rip as MP3's. I explained that wasn't an option for me. She listened to a few cuts on a CD I'd brought with, or rather the ends of the cuts and confirmed there was a problem with the rip. She went through my settings, and asked if I'd tried it with Error Correction turned off. I explained I hadn't and that I preferred to use it. She suggested attempting to rip one of the cuts with it turned off just to see how it did. We did that and no artifact was there. So her 'solution' was to either leave error-correction turned off always, or turn it off for those problem CD's that produce the artifact (I'd estimate about 5% do on my laptop). This did not explain why it was doing it, nor why my g5 tower, which is running a carbon-copied system with all the same iTunes settings, does not produce the artifact with Error-Correction turned on.
I'd be interested to hear of anyone else who's been having problems importing hi-rez files in iTunes. I know of at least one other instance where the artifact produced (on a MacBook) is dis-similar to mine in that it takes the form of brief electronic beeps moving from channel to channel.
    Anyone else?

  • Strange display artifact

I have been seeing a strange on-screen artifact and wonder what kind of problem this indicates.  I'm using a Mac Pro 2.8 GHz quad-core Intel Xeon running OSX 10.6.8 with the stock ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics card and an Apple 23" Cinema HD display (2 actually).  The artifact shows up in the top corners of the Firefox browser window and in the top corners of the Apple Mail application window.  They don't appear at startup, but later in the day.  The artifacts look like this (3 jagged lines in the very corners):

    Anyone seen this before?

    Grant,
First of all, thanks for replying.  I can understand that the jagged lines are not screen artifacts, but I didn't know what else to call them.  Can you offer some more details about why these marks could be due to a third party application?  I'm not asking what you think they mean because you already stated you don't know; I'm asking how such marks could be produced by any application running on a computer when the marks aren't part of any kind of normal operation of any application that I've ever seen.  BTW, the third-party gadgets you saw belong to Color Munki screen calibration, Stuffit Deluxe magic menu, Intego Internet Security menu and Intego internet incoming/outgoing traffic monitor.

  • Photos of brickwork have strange patterns when displayed in Elements 9 Full Screen

I have recently photographed several brick buildings (houses, lighthouses etc). When I display some of these in Photoshop Elements 9 using Full Screen (F11) the brickwork has a strange, curved secondary striation pattern across it, rather like an interference pattern.  This does not occur when the same picture is displayed via other photo viewing software (eg Nikon ViewNX2) or in Elements Single Photo View or when editing.  Any ideas on how to prevent this problem in Full Screen would be welcome!

Thanks to the forum, I was able to locate them in my Mac's User Name/Pictures.  Is there a way to bring them back into Elements 9?

  • Strange patterns during startup

Since a year I noticed strange black and white patterns shown on my Cinema Display 30 and strange noise pattern on the secondary Philips monitor during startup. I have a 3.1 MacPro w. ATI Radeon HD 2600 video card, and I am using Mac OSX 10.6.8.
I have tried several software solutions, and PRAM reset as well. Unfortunately the problem still occurs.

What is shown on the display is often a window into the display memory. Patterns such as the ones you are seeing may indicate that the RAM on the display card is failing.
The Apple-brand ATI 5770 is a good replacement card, and as long as you are running 10.6.5 or later, seems to work in all models MacPro.

  • Strange rectangular artifacts on screen

I just upgraded from OS 10.4.10 to 10.5.6. I'm getting strange black rectangular artifacts that go away when the screen redraws. They look like invisible strike areas for Flash buttons. These black rectangles are very distracting and annoying. Has anyone else encountered this? I have screen captures I can send to anyone if my description is not clear.
    Thank you.

    Hi LG Smith;
Check in System Preference > Universal Access and see if you have VoiceOver turned on. This can do it. Sometime an Upgrade can change system preference for you.

  • Get strange banding/artifacting whenever camera moves

    Hello,
I'm trying to build a simple DVD of a movie project I edited in Final Cut Pro. I have been doing this for several years and don't recall ever coming across this sort of problem.
On a static shot the image looks fine. But whenever there is camera movement I am getting this awful banding or artifacting (not sure how to describe it really) in the edges of the subject on the screen. Especially if both the camera and subject are moving simultaneously. Once the camera lands it looks ok again.
My normal workflow is to export a self contained Quicktime movie out of Final Cut, Import into Compressor, then create the files for DVDSP.
I have experimented with different compression methods:H264, Photo JPEG, Apple Pro Res, etc. All of the movie files look great playing in Quicktime or FCP, but then when I use Compressor to convert to AC3 and M2V for DVDSP4 this issue occurs. I am using the DVD Best Quality 90 Minute preset in Compressor. I see it both on my Apple 30" Display as well as both of my Flat Screen TV's (one is LCD and one is Plasma).
I have experimented with DVDSP bit rates and still get it.
    Any ideas?
    Many Thanks,
    Peter

Ok, then you need to do as I described in the previous post.
After dropping the 4:3 timeline into the 16:9 timeline, scale it to 133% (you have to sacrifice resolution if you want to fill the 16:9 frame). You may need to vertically re-position certain parts of your content. Do it by moving the clip up or down in the 16:9 timeline, not in your original 4:3 timeline. After you are done, export using "current settings" and encode in compressor. If you stay within the DV-domain, and use same framerate and lower field in both timelines, field order will not get swapped, and your m2v will look fine.
    Another edit:
A little late, maybe, but - if this is only watched on a computer monitor, nothing of what I have written will change what you see. This only applies when played on an interlaced TV. Still very important to get right tho.
If you want to lose the fields and thus fake a progressive image, you need to apply the de-interlace filter to all your footage in FCP.
