Strange pattern in Crop tool

Whenever I switch to the Crop/Sraighten tool, I see a pattern that divides the image into four sections, always in he same way:
What is this and what to do about it?

Weird Crop tool behaviour with 16-bit files

Shadow areas of my 16-bit files show strange patterns if I use the Crop tool to rotate. I can also replicate the problem by doing the following:
Make a new empty 16-bit file in PS6 in RGB mode (File>New). Fill it with 100% black. Use the Crop tool and rotate to taste. Press Enter to accept the crop and zoom in to enjoy the black and grey noise patterning reminiscent of a man's suit. The Straighten tool will achieve the same result. Your suit pattern will vary according to the degree of rotation.
The problem goes away if you subsequently convert the file to 8-bit, or convert to any other mode (Greyscale, Lab, CMYK).
This patterning is easily visible at 100% view or less, and appears whether the View>Show>Pixel Grid option is on or off. It is decidedly NOT the pixel grid I am seeing.
This effect can be created with files from both my Canon and Hasselblad cameras.
I'm using a Mac Pro with OS10.6.8.

Crop tool won't drag with CC Photoshop 2014

I have searched everywhere and talked with Adobe support through chat (they ended that abruptly??!), and Twitter and still have not had any resolution to this. I hope someone can help.
I'm trying to do a simple crop. I've done it a million times with no problems BEFORE CC 2014.
I select the crop tool and try to drag but it always stops immediately and selects the entire image as the Crop Preview.
I've tried:
using "Classic Mode"
different Ratios/Resolutions
uninstalling/re-installing
installing the latest update - but that always fails. - I'll even completely uninstall, then when it goes to re-install it will install the one file (after a million attempts at failing to download it) and then fail on an update that it tries to install. I've tried at least 20 times. AT LEAST!!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Could it be my NVIDIA GeForce 8400GS? (I know that's not the reason for the failed downloads from Adobe servers - that's all on them.)

I have spent a week trying to get this to work and now it just started working for all images. I have NO idea why.
Here's what I did:
1. uninstalled NVIDIA GeForce 8400GS drivers and reinstalled them
2. uninstalled CC Photoshop 2014 (2x)
3. clean install of CC Photoshop 2014 (2x)
4. installed update (took dozens of tries before this actually downloaded and installed successfully unfortunately)
5. clicked on the crop tool and tried to drag... nothing happened
6. waited, waited and waited.. went about my other work and forgot about it and then after about 5 minutes the crop box appeared. I was able to adjust it too.
No idea but I'm happy now.

Crop Tool Confusion When Used to Change the Dimensions (but not the resolution) of an Image

Picture this. You have a real photograph in front of you. Its dimensions are 7x5 inches, and you want to cut out of that photograph, a 4x4” square. You’re not bothered by the rest of the photograph, you’ll discard that, so you mark your 4” square on the photo at the place you want to keep, and with a pair of scissors, cut (crop) the photo accordingly.
Using the analogy above, I’m having difficulty achieving what should be an extremely simple operation in Photoshop CC 2014. I have an image which is 5000px wide x 3800px high at a resolution of 240px/inch.
Using the “W x H x Resolution” option of the crop tool, I want to crop the image to 2100px x 2100px, maintaining the original image resolution of 240px/inch. No matter what settings I use in the crop tool toolbar, the crop tool insists on sizing the crop by assuming the full length of the shortest axis on my image. In this instance the vertical distance. If I initiate the crop, I do end up with a 2100px square image at 240px/inch, but the shortest original dimension (and hence pro-rate the image) has been rescaled and resized.
What I was expecting to see is the crop tool outline simply showing a square which represents 2100px a side at 240px/inch relative to the image I’m viewing. I would then drag the outline to the position where I wanted it, and then crop the image. This isn’t happening. I can manually resize the crop area with my mouse, and rely on the floating information pop-up to check the actual crop dimensions, but this seems counter-intuitive (not to mention difficult when attempting a pixel accurate crop).
Strangely enough, if I change the size of the crop window by using the mouse, and right click inside the crop area, the context menu has the option “Use Crop Box Size & Resolution”. Selecting this option updates the toolbar with the chosen crop size and everything is as expected. Surely, this is what the crop toolbar should do in the first place?
Am I missing something here? I may not perform this particular operation very often in Photoshop, but I’m sure it worked the way I thought is should before!

You'd better use the Marquee tool for this. Set the desired number of pixels in the options bar. Click and drag and finally Image > Crop.

Crop tool, image is hidden by grey box!

I am having a problem with crop tool, image is hidden by grey box. Using LR4 on Win7.
I have cropped successfully many times before, but a couple days ago, I suddenly had this strange problem.
I assume I must have accidentally changed some setting by an accidental keystroke or something else?
I have tried opening and closing Lightroom several times. I have the same problem on all images I try to crop.
I cannot figure out why. Please advise! thanks!!!

If you leave the resolution box blank, whether the crop tool resamples or not then depends on the size units you choose in the width and height boxes. If pixel units are entered, the original resolution is preserved and resampling must occur to effect that. If inches are used, resampling does NOT occur.

Crop tool leads to defect

hi everybody,
my crop tool (pse 6, xp professional) produces some kind of strange error for a short time. Any time I use it and klick the hook, pse doesn't show the cropped picture but shows only one little square in the center of the window and turnes the layers into one colour. The picture is gone.

At the far left of the options bar you'll see either a crop tool symbol or a tiny black triangle, depending on your version of PSE. Click it and choose Reset Tool from the menu.

My crop tool is sticky

My crop tool is sticky. Just by moving my cursor around, the crop frame moves with it even tho I have not clicked on the frame. I have an older iMac from 2008 and a brand new 27" iMac. I use a trackpad on both my macs. The same problem exists on both of them which seems strange. Just by moving my cursor around, the crop frame moves with it even tho I have not clicked on the frame. I no sooner get one side done and move to another side and the whole frame moves right along with me. I can't let go of it. Sometimes it takes off by itself (honestly!) and becomes long and very narrow or does some other weird thing and I have to press reset to start over only to have the same thing happen again. I have called Apple and they claim that no one else has ever complained about a similar problem. They had me trash the preferences iPhoto plist and start over with that. Sometimes it works fine for dozens of photos after doing that and other times it doesn't help at all. I have hundreds of old photos I'm making a slideshow out of in Keynote and everything is going great except for this one problem. I hesitate to reinstall iPhoto. Is that my only option?

Well, I've spent about an hour torturing the crop bars in iPhoto, trying to generate any kind of consistent bad behavior. When I first started, I was seeing problems occur about once every couple minutes, but not in any consistent way. I saw the crop frame change shape when nothing was selected and I was just moving the cursor. I saw the cross for corner manipulation track my cursor finger all the way into the center of the frame, even though I was not selecting anything. I saw one or more frame sides jump in or out a quarter inch or more at a time, when nothing was selected. This last was the most common misbehavior for about the first half hour. But the more I honed in on trying to recreate any problem, the less it started happening. I thought perhaps I'm doing something with my fingers on this new trackpad that the software is not interpreting the way I intend it to. I'm pretty sure at this point it's at least partly that, based on the diminishing occurrences as I experienced tonight.
In the last 15 minutes or so of constantly grabbing and moving corners, dragging the cursor over every part of the frame and photo with and without selecting things, the most I could get was twice when I was moving the cursor without selecting anything, and the whole crop frame shifted less than a quarter inch. I tried quitting iPhoto and restarting it, switching to different photos, and trying the same operation of selecting an area and trying to make it act goofy in a preview image I have up on the desktop. I even walked away for five minutes, rinsed my hands in water so they were nice and cold again, and I still can't get it to fail again. I think I'm done playing with it for tonight, but the next time it does misbehave, I'm going to plug in my usb mouse and see what happens. If it is a library issue, how I select things and control the cursor shouldn't make any difference, should it?
I've been using my bluetooth mouse on my mac mini (same versions of iPhoto and OS) to edit photos in iPhoto for the last three years, and I've never seen anything like these mis-behaviors.

Sorry, thought if was Adobe I was yelling at (trying to find a way to
contact them is indeed frustrating!!).
I just installed Photoshop Elements 12 on my Mac running 10.7.5 and the
cropping tool works only sometimes. It will be working and then stops. I
can try any number of things such as switching from ³Quick² to ³Expert² and
back to ³Quick² and it might work again. There is no pattern. I may need
to shut the program down and restart it and, again, it might work. I can
detect no pattern. It is frustrating to pay good money for a product and
not have it work (and, I just learned, in order to have Abobe supportfor a
product that has NEVER workedI must pay them $40!). Thanks. Steve

PSE7 Crop Tool freezes

I am wondering if this is a known issue. Purchased PSE7 in April. After start-up the crop tool will perform as expected until I start changing from one size to another. Then, after a few crops, it freezes and will no longer show any size options in the drop-down. The crop tool still performs, I'm just locked in on whatever size it is frozen to. Reset Tool doesn't work; Reset All Tools doesn't do anything either. Closing Elements and then restarting solves the problem -- for 4 or 5 or 6 crops -- then it locks up again. Even a restart that includes "rebuilding effects, etc" doesn't do any good.
PSE5 is still loaded; I usually go back to using that as I have no problems with it. I am reluctant to uninstall and reinstall PSE7 -- sure is a lot of work to reinstall all the add-ons and plug-ins I have. It will really be a bummer if I do all that and still have this problem.
Anybody have any ideas?

I have no idea either as to why this would happen. Seems to be no pattern at all. It happened repeatedly this afternoon.
As suggested, Edit > Preset Manager > Done, turns the tool back on. Sure is a lot easier than exiting Elements and then opening again. Can't imagine why that is the solution but, who cares -- it works.

Crop Tool Color & Opacity

Is there any way to get the crop tool to stick at the settings you select other than the default color black at 75% opacity? Seems to me ages ago, perhaps as far back as Photoshop 6 or 7, you could change the color of the shielding and the percentage, and it would stay until you changed it.
Is it possible in CS4?

It's not the preferences.
So you guys aren't having this issue at all?
You can set your color and opacity to let's say gray and 100%.
Do a crop with the preset 8x10.
Open another photo and do a preset to 5x7 and it's stays gray and 100%.
Go back to 8x10 do a crop and it's still gray and 100%?
By the way.....two of my friends have the same issue on their machines.

Quit the editor (Quit PSE on a mac). Then restart it while holding down ctrl+alt+shift (command+option+shift). Keep the keys down till you see a window asking if you want to delete the settings file. You do.

Intermittent problems with strange patterns on screen

My new (refurbed) 17in Intel Imac starts up periodically with a strange pattern running at 45 degrees across the entire screen (little multicolor boxes or rectangles) then the screen goes to all blue and freezes with no further activity. I have run the hardware test, reset pram and disk utility with no solutions. It will still boot up perfectly about every 3rd attempt. I'm running 10.4.10. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

To make sure that this is not software related, set it back to factory settings, without using a backup afterwards, described in this article:

If the screen has still this pattern, the issue is hardware related and the phone needs to be serviced. In that case it might be enough to let Apple replace the screen.

Is my i7 MBP GPU malfunctioning? Strange pattern on screen?

Happens in the morning after the computer has been sleeping all night.
Diamond shape artifacting I guess?
Computer runs for about 3 minutes, then screen gets a strange pattern across it, then locks up.
Looks like this after the hard boot.

After I leave it on for a bit and let it warm up reset the power then it boots like this.

After it gets to the desktop things are really crashy and don't load properly, so a 3rd boot is needed.
After 3 reboots the problem goes away, so what ever it is I assume needs to warm up before it works right.
Its obviously hardware related, I suspect my logic board / GPU need to be replaced?
All this happens as soon as I move to Mexico where there are no Mac service places around!
Anyone know if mac will ship replacement parts for user serviceable components?

Unfortunately, this does have the look of a hardware problem, probably having to do with a graphics chip. Have you tried running the extended version of the Apple Hardware test? You might get an error code which would indicate where the problem is.

Is there any way to create an action or keyboard shortcut to set the Crop tool to the front window size in Photoshop CS6?
I find that I use that several times a day. I got used to it being the top choice in the Crop tool presets menu.

For the cloud version press I (eye)
For the perpectual version press F
