Strange Pixelated Display Issue

I recently began having a display problem with my 17" Macbook Pro (2007), running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. It's easier to show photos of the problem than to describe how it looks. See the below links.
This happens within the first few minutes of booting my system up. It isn't always so immediate. It always gets worse by itself over time. Eventually, I get the beach ball and my system completely locks up.
You'll see in the 3rd photo that it's happening at the login screen and that it doesn't happen around our user names and icons. On the 4th image, this is what happened when my system went to sleep by itself. I awoke it using the spacebar and the distortion was in a totally different pattern.

I'm really hoping the problelm is software based and not hardware. Any direction that can be provided would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

So, after creating a bootable Lion USB drive and booting up with it, I still saw the distortion, telling me it's not OS X on my system drive.
Tafftech, your gut feeling is my worst gut feeling as well. Considering this thing isn't covered under an AppleCare plan any longer, I'm considering buying a used logic board from Ebay and using the walkthrough tutorial on ifixit.com to replace it myself. I found some at around $250. Not super happy about having to do that, but it's by far the cheapest route to hopefully solving this problem.
Before I started a career in design and animation, I was an IT guy, so I'm not afriad to get my hands dirty. Although this will be a bigger challange that I usually take on.
Anyone think this is a really bad idea for any reason? I appreciate other's more informed opinions on this stuff.
Thanks

    Hello wmbell247,
It sounds like you are getting some graphical anomolies after updating to Mac OS X Mavericks. I recommend these troubleshooting steps from the following article named:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1573
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
    Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
Also you can test the issue in Safe Mode, which the article references and see if the issue happens there. If not then a 3rd party login item may be causing an issue with the system:
OS X Mavericks: If you think you have incompatible login items

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Strange LG Display issue

One of my LG W2361V monitors started dying recently, and LG was wonderful in replacing it with a W2353VP. When I hooked up the new monitor a strange thing happened. When my I wake my Mac Pro from sleep, every window of every program has been moved to the new, main monitor. I usually have iTunes on the right monitor ... after I wake it up, it's on the left. If I'm working in After Effects, after I wake it up, all of the windows that I have defaulted to the right screen are on the left (new) screen.
Does anyone have any suggestions how I can solve this riddle? I would really like my screens to wake up looking like they did when they fell asleep.
    Thanks!
    ++bronson

When I wake up the machine, there is no lag time between monitors. They wake up at the same time. So I'm not sure if that's the answer.
From the point of view of the display card, a full-screen refresh takes about 16.7 milliseconds.
The human eye needs about 1/6 second (166.7 milliseconds) or ten times longer, to recognize that a scene has changed. So the computer could recognize an electrical change (display gone missing) LONG before your eye could.
An interesting experiment would be to swap the HDMI connectors at the displays, and see if the results remain the same. If this seems to "cure" the problem, you can use Displays Preferences to re-assign which display has the Menubar and fix their relative positions in your workspace.

  • Strange iCal Display Issue

Via some accidental key combination, I seem to have prompted iCal to display one of my calendars as a sort of mini-calendar within the current day in the monthly view mode. It appears as simply a grid of dots. How do I switch this off?

I think I now know the answer -- one of my calendar feeds has changed, and is mistakenly now listing all events on a single day at a single time. iCal is then displaying them all as dots to fit them onto the day.

  • Font display issues

Upgraded to Lion on an iMac, now I have strange font display issues across applications and in browsers and specifically with numbers, somethimes letters.

Start with something relatively simple, like clearing the font cache files.
Close all running applications. From an administrator account, open the Terminal app and enter the following command. You can also copy/paste it from here into the Terminal window:
    sudo atsutil databases -remove
Terminal will then ask for you to enter your admin password. As you type, it will not show anything, so be sure to enter it correctly.
This removes all font cache files. Both for the system and the current user font cache files. After running the command, close Terminal and immediately restart your Mac.

  • Pixelated enlarged screen - display issues related to external hard drive

Hi.  I had an external hard drive plugged into my macbook.  I have a second monitor hooked up.  My screen is pixelated and enlarged (I have to scroll to see the whole desktop).  The icons are rearranged and very blurry. Everything is blurry and enlarged.  My files will open, but they are all blurry as well.  When I noticed these display issues, I realized the mac was not detecting the hard drive that was plugged into the usb port. I  unplugged it and then a LOT of folders with the hard drive name appeared on the desktop and then disappeared.  I know I may have misstepped by unplugging it, but what can I do now?  I have rebooted, shut down, checked zoom and screen resolution settings, and unplugged the monitor.  It's the same when I uplug the second monitor and just view my desktop on the mac.  Any ideas? Thank you in advance!

There is a multitude of posts here addressing the dangers of using Mackeeper. But just look at this:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3691
While this particular problem may not have been caused by Mackeeper, I urge you to uninstall this piece of trash.

  • Display issue: green, flashing pixels, low resolution on my new MBP 17"

I just bought my MacBook Pro 17" on December 2010 from Authorized Reseller in Dublin.
After couple of days for the first time and now every 2-3 days my MBP's display goes suddenly pixleated with green, shiny pixels and all display appears like low resolution. After closing the lid and opening it again the problem disappears. During that display problem my computer has no issue with performance like: video playing, opening and closing applications, rebooting, etc. Here are some screen shots made by my photo camera during this display issue: http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/809/dsc03872j.jpg http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/6670/dsc03879x.jpg http://img834.imageshack.us/img834/7914/dsc03885z.jpg http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/3830/dsc03881g.jpg
I should mention that I also made a screen shot with Shiftcmd3 combination of keys during this display issue and it appears, as you can see http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/8618/screenshot20110123at204.png as it should be - sharp and clear. One of my friend said that maybe I should reinstall operating system, but my guess is that it isn't software (Snow Leopard) issue. By the way, I have all the latest updates.
Please, can you tell me what is the problem, what is causing it and what should I do?
    Thank you.

Ok, guys, I should update my main post about screen issues on my MacBook Pro 17" 2010 model, because it was quiet a big issue. It was actually problem not with display panel (which was completely replaced and which didn't resolved that screen issue at all) but with motherboard which has been replaced (by Mactivate).
After almost 3 months I can say that the computer had no issues since the repair: no screen issues, no noisy running vents.
I must say I am happy with repair made by Mactivate (actually one of few repair services authorized and recommended by Apple). They arranged the pick up with their own currier with no charge, great communication and most of all - they did everything to resolve this quiet unusual issue with my display.
I really and honestly can recommend Mactivate to anyone in Ireland.

  • GPU/display issue?

    Hi
I'm having a serious problem with a mid 2008 intel (alu) iMac (2.66GHz Core 2 Duo, running Mavericks). I think from my searching around that it may be a GPU issue, but could also be display.
The mac won't boot properly, getting no further than the grey screen with apple logo. If started up normally, this screen displays a checked pattern. It goes nowhere and the only way out is to do a hard shut down.
I can boot in safe mode though. In this mode, the mac generally seems to be functioning OK, but instead of checks I have a very fetching set of bands/stripes. They are sometimes pink and orange, but at the moment they are white and turquoise. Each band is made up of a series of eight stripes, each stripe a few pixels wide. There are 13 bands across the screen: the desktop can be seen underneath/through the bands and can also be seen normally between the bands (so I have normal bands and striped bands, each the same width, repeating across the screen). The cursor arrow attracts in own mini striped band - a square the same width as the main bands. (image upside down for some reason!).
As I say, my googling suggests that this is probably a GPU issue (the ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro, not the apparently dodgy NVIDIA one that seems to have cursed some early 2008 imacs). What I don't get is why I can boot in safe mode but not at all otherwise - what gets disabled in safe mode that allows it to bypass what is otherwise an apparently total barrier to successful booting? When I try to boot normally and get stuck on the Apple logo, I can hear the mac working away, but is just doesn't seem able to go all the way. The really weird thing is that even when it is stuck at this stage, I can still remotely access the iMac from my MBP - I can open and copy files over the network. This suggests that it is in fact sort of booted, but just not displaying itself. I cannot screen share though. When booted in safe mode, I can screen share, and the stripes show up on the shared screen view on the MBP. Again, this suggests to me it is a GPU issue, not a display issue.
Unfortunately, this is my old iMac whcih i have just passed on to my mother in law, who is based 250 miles from me. I am visiting for a few days and so need to either get it sorted or conclude that it's toast (seems little point in forking out for a new GPU for a near six year old machine, even if I could swap it). I don't mind taking it apart (I swapped the hard drive last year) if that woudl help identify the source of the problem.
Any ideas much appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Hi Tammy (and anyone else who can help)
That's good news. Things at my end have gone a little strange. I put back all the extensions one by one and was able to boot nromally, even once all of them were back. I did however get a message that the ATI 2600 extension wasn't installed properly, but as it was still booting and I couldn't see any way to reinstall it (other than just popping it back in the extensions folder) I moved on. The screen was getting a bit worse, but still just striped rather than banded.
Having read further threads on similar problems, I decided to take the whole thing apart (great ifixit step by step guide). Nothing seemed amiss - all connections seemed secure, no obvious burnouts. Removed a LOT of dust and put everything back together again.
The machine started straight up when I plugged the power cord back in (I didn't get a chance to press the power button) - the screen flashed briefly round the edges and then stayed black. No stripes, no bands, no image.
I could hear the hard drive spinning, so pressed some buttons on the keyboard and got a warning tone, suggesting some sort of boot. I forced shut down and restarted and then tried to log in with the screen still blank. The bad news is that the screen has stayed black since then. The good news is I now have full remote access and can even screen share. The screen now has no bands when I screen share - I can see and interact with the full screen as normal and have managed to retrieve files etc over the network.
I am still deciding whether to order a new (second hand) video card. Looking in system profiler to get info on this it now shows no info AT ALL under graphics/display and in the 'more info' tab from the apple menu 'about this mac' version of system info it now says "No display detected". I am now unsure whether I have somehow 'blown' the display (I still get a brief white margin round the screen on start up) or whether both graphics card and screen are both goosed, or whether I should take it apart again to make sure the display itself is properly connected. If the graphics card was fubar, would I be able to see anything at all via screen sharing? I don't have an external display I can test it with. I don't want to fork out for  GPU only to find it is the display.
    Any views on next steps?

  • Display Issues with mini (Mid 2010) and LG L246WP

I recently purchased a new mini (Mid 2010 base model) and planned to use it with my 24" LG L246WP monitor, which is about 3 years old. The monitor has VGA, component, and HDMI inputs.
I used an HDMI-to-HDMI cable to connect the mini directly to the monitor, and the output is completely messed up. The mini recognized the monitor (titling the System Preferences > Display dialog with 'L246WP') and set it to the monitor's native resolution of 1920x1200, but on the monitor the image is cropped to what looks like a 4:3 aspect ratio and with part of the image shifted up and left so I cannot view the top menu bar or the left hand side of the desktop. The monitor's on-screen display shows 1080p in this mode.
The Display dialog also gives me an option for 1080p. I can select this and use the Underscan slider to resize the desktop output to fit on the screen, but it is still shifted left and must be resized smaller than the available display space (plus the total image is only 1080 pixels, not using the monitor's full native screen). In this mode, 1080p also shows on the monitor's on-screen display.
I tried 1024x768 to see if I could get a properly-positioned image, but the desktop was shifted just like in the 1920x1200 case and the monitor's on-screen display status still reported 1080p.
The monitor has a menu setting under an HDMI heading with "Video" and "PC" options, but changing this selection does not make a difference.
Since the monitor came out before HDMI was as widespread as it is today, it came with a DVI-to-HDMI cable, so I also tried using that cable with the HDMI-to-DVI adapter that came with the mini, but this did not make a difference either.
To prove it wasn't the HDMI cable, I connected the mini to my Samsung 6300 series 40" LED HDTV and with some tweaking of the Underscan slider the displayed image filled the screen perfectly.
I've searched the Internet and various forum threads (i.e. http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1167222&page=63) seem to indicate this monitor can send a corrupted EDID that causes issues, especially with nVidia graphics drivers. On Windows you can use registry or driver hacks to override the EDID with the correct values, but on OS X this doesn't seem possible (I was hoping for a Terminal one-liner but it seems this doesn't exist). I have seen some mentions of the shareware SwitchResX (http://www.madrau.com), which looks like it gives you the option to override resolution settings, but I haven't tried this yet.
It also appears to me that the monitor is always interpreting the signal (or the mini is always sending the signal) as 1080p, even if I've set 1920x1200 in the Display dialog. I don't know if this is a defect in the monitor where it always assumes the HDMI input is a 1080p source (previous I used it with an Xbox 360 with no issues but that was 1080p HDMI), or if is a bug in the graphics drivers (or at least a lack of flexibility / miscommunication to the user trying to handle a corrupt EDID).
I asked my local Genius Bar for advice today (without bringing any hardware in) but was not told anything I didn't already know.
I'm trying to determine the best way to work through this issue. *My questions are:*
Would it make any difference if I used a Mini DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter (and then my DVI-to-HDMI cable to the monitor's HDMI input)?
What about a Mini DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter? In the past I used a 12" Powerbook (via a mini-DVI-to-VGA adapter) with this monitor and had no display issues like this, but I'd prefer to stick with a digital connection on my brand new mini.
Is SwitchResX the only practical way in OS X to override a corrupt EDID and force the mini to output a certain resolution?
Besides the various adapters and SwitchResX, is there anything else I should try before buying a new monitor?

    Hello EPWilson4984.
I have been experiencing the same issues you described. Connecting my brand new Mac Mini to my Westinghouse 24”monitor (L2410NM,  1920x1200 pixel resolution) produces a very fuzzy and washed out image quality. The Mac recognizes the monitor and applies the right resolution (1920x1200), but it looks just awful. The EDID info is definitely not right.
Now, I tried your suggestion (DVI-to-HDMI), and similar suggestions from other threads, but nothing works. Nothing seems to work at all.
The main input for the monitor is HDMI, so whatever cable I use, in the end always has to connect to the monitor via HDMI. I tried all these combinations with zero success:
Mac mini -> HDMI cable -> monitor (result: fuzzy and blurry image)
Mac mini -> displayport –HDMI adapter-> HDMI cable -> monitor (result: fuzzy and blurry image)
Mac mini  -> displayport –DVI adapter-> DVI-to-HDMI cable -> monitor (result: it gives me a blank screen, no image at all)
I’m running out of options. Don’t know what to do. The 24” monitor produces beautiful, crisp images when hooked to my Windows 7 PC. It looks horrible when connected to my brand new Mac Mini.
Any alternatives you may have come across? Please let me know, thank you.

  • Mac Pro 3,1 - freezes, shows strange pixels on screen and then restarts

My Mac Pro 3,1 sometimes freezes and shows strange pixelated objects on the screen and then restarts by itself. Is this a hardware issue or a software issue?
I'm running OS X Mavericks on it and everything is up to date. I have a lot of saved professional audio work on it that needs to be done and I can't afford to get a new Mac Pro. Any please help me out! Thanks a lot.

Yes, there was a kernel panic today again.

  • Bizarre & Random Dashboards Display Issues/Errors

    Hello,
I am on BI 4.1 SP04 and these dashboards were developed using an equivalent level on the client tool. (4.1 SP04)
Sometimes we get very strange and often random display issues with our dashboards. I have attached screen shots for examples. Sometime we are missing data points from rendering on the charts, other times a line chart will extend into a bar chart.  Has anyone experienced this or have any idea what could cause this? It is very frustrating...
    Thanks for looking,
    Gary
Missing data points on yellow line, yet line rendering with proper data (other wise would have 0's in places, etc)
Green line missing dot on last end point
In this example there are no dots on the yellow line or green line
In this example the blue line has turned into massive columns extending across the charts

This patch should resolve the issue in the last screenshot. I still face the other issues after upgrading to SP3 Patch 4. The dots in line chart take some time to appear. Also, if we use dynamic visibility, the components taking considerable time to appear sometimes. I hope this will also be fixed in later patches. Please share your experience too after applying the patch.

  • Multi User Calendar Display Issue

When we moved to GW2012 one of our departments that uses a Multi User calendar (5 users in total) noticed some strange display issues.
When User1 is looking at her Multi User Calendar, the client is displaying her appointments in User2's column as well. But if you look at User2's Multi User calendar, you don't see any of User1's appointments in User2's column, so it appears to be a display issue with User1. This same issue is happening with one other user.
All users are on Client 12.0.2, Build 108211 . Interestingly if we look at the calendar on a machine running the GW8 client this display issue does not occur. I have also gone as far as rebuilding the calendar from scratch but this hasn't changed anything.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!
    Steve

    Hi
If you open a Service Request with Novell Technical Services you will receive this Field Test File patch for the GroupWise 2012 Client. It is specifically to fix issues with multi-user calenders. Please let us know if you are in a position to open an SR.
    Many thanks.
    Cheers,

  • [Solved] Site display issues in Firefox 11.0-2/KDE 4.8.1

I have been having issues with the form fields of the AUR page. Specifically, with any version of Firefox after v9; the fields are incredibly small. (See http://imgur.com/KEdYk for what it looks like). I have removed gtk-kde4, and even created a vanilla user with a brand-new home directory, and this other user profile experiences the same problem. edit: In a fresh install of GNOME 3, the AUR page displays correctly. Also displays correctly if I revert to FF v9
This problem doesn't occur in Chromium, so I thought it was a FF issue, however, I've not heard of anybody else with this same problem... So I'm a little stumped. I filed a bug report a while back, (https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/28613 ), but it has been closed. Any help in diagnosing and/or fixing this issue would be helpful and appreciated. Thanks!

That is sounding quite strange.  I've had display issues similar to yours with login fields and search fields that are usually at the top of a we page appearing distorted and on top of each other.  Another prevalent problem that I noticed on YouTube was that text I enter into any field doesn't show up, but it is entered and I can search.  I'm running xfce so I don't know what to say.  Haven't had the problem in gnome, though I really don't like gnome 3 for its lack of what of what I considered organizational hierarchy.  (though I am against hierarchies of other sorts),  Ive also found that clearing the Firefox cache can solve some of these problems.

  • EMac Still Humming Along - Display Issues Though ... Any Help?

I have a strange display issue to run by the forum here:
Obviously my 2002 eMac is going to be suffering some display issues
with the age the Mac is and all ... but besides the slightly "softer" screen focus
(due to aging tube), I only have one other constant issue with the display.
I know the brightness and contrast are not what they used to be when the eMac
was newer, but here is the issue I am having. At least once a day now (after a few hours
of use), I seem to be constantly adjusting the "brightness" and "contrast" setting to get the
screen to a very usable brighter white field color. Normally now, the screen will get kind
of "dim gray" and less "contrast white" ... without any brightness or contrast range left for
me to adjust (the brightness and contrast settings in the system preferences/display pane
    are usually maxed out).
To kind of fix this, what I've noticed lately, is that if I open the system preferences pane
and go to the "display" settings, lower both brightness and contrast down to the lowest settings,
then close out of system preferences .... then open system preferences again, and adjust the brightness and contrast up to slightly higher than the normal middle settings .... the screen brightness and contast are better and I have more "adjustment range.
Here's my question: What would be making the "brightness" and "contrast" settings come back to
a more "normal state" by performing the above sequence? I once thought the screen display was
getting older and as a result, dimming normally. But now I am thinking that it may be more of a "software" issue that isn't keeping the brightness or contrast settings in hold.
I pretty much perform all the basic maintenance procedures on a regular basis (ie: Permissions,
repair, disc repair/check, DiscWarrior directory repair/check, etc.), so am I missing anything
    important here?
Any thoughts or ideas what is happening here, or how to make the "brightness" and "contrast"
    hold their settings longer?
    Any assistance is appreciated. Thanks

One other thing to look at is the setting in System Preferences, Universal Access, *Enhance Contrast* slider to make sure it is set to normal before you make the adjustment in Display.
Have you ever tried calibrating your screen? It can also be done under Display?
Generally an increasingly darker display is hardware related caused by heat, as well as the aging of the tube as you have indicated.
I used to like cleaning out the dust from the interior of the eMac periodically using a large soft artist's brush to dust and a running vacuum cleaner to suck up the dust as it flew. Most dust accumulates on the fan blades and it always seemed to run quieter afterwards, though 'quieter' is a relative term on an eMac.
The only tricky bit to this operation is the micro plug that connects to the power button. It is very small and fiddly to reattach.
Only consider the above course of action if your are naturally happy with opening electrical equipment and realize it must be completely disconnected from any power outlet before you even start. Otherwise don't do it if you feel unsure.
Your problem is unusual in your saying that it appears to be software related, from opening and closing your Sys. Prefs dialogue. It makes me wonder if anything is corrupting that file, and the settings it contains? It is peculiar.
I wonder if deleting that particular file would help. With System Preferences closed, in Finder locate,
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
and drag it to the trash.
It will be recreated next time your open Sys. Prefs.
I doubt if that will be the fix, but you might as well try it. As an experiment, instead of doing your described technique, instead try trashing that .plist and see if it achieves the same.
Lastly when was the last time you replaced your PRAM battery? It is a cheap thing to do, and I mention it only because the PRAM chip does control some video settings and removing a possible aberrant voltage from the equation is a one more thing you can do.
