Strange power issues - new battery?

When you push the power button, You can hear the fans turning and you hear the startup chime. From here it will either do one of two things: start like normal and show the apple screen or do nothing at all. There isn't much of a pattern to when it will do either except that when I get nothing, shut it down, take out the battery, press the reset button, and put the battery back in it starts up normally. I think that this is an issue with the battery, which I am more than willing to replace. Shuld I? If that's not it, what is the issue?

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
It sounds like you are resetting the PMU each time in order to recover. Try doing it in the exact recommended order and see if that makes a difference:

An exceedingly worn battery can cause strange issues, all right, but it could also be a problem with the logic board.
Which model of iBook is this (MHz rating, type of optical drive)?
How big is the hard drive and how much space remains available?
How much RAM is installed?

  • Strange power issues

I am having some strange power issues with my six week old Macbook. The symptoms are as follows (I apologise in advance for the length of this post) :
    1) If the battery charge is below 50%, and you connect the magsafe charger prior to power-on, the charge light will illuminate until the grey boot screen comes up. Then the charge light turns of completely & the Macbook boots up using battery power. If I disconnect the magsafe connector, followed by the mains and reconnect in the reverse sequence, the light turns green momentarily and then orange (as it should for charging)
    2) If I start the coconutBattery application after booting into OSX, while the charge is still below 50%, the same issue occurs again with the magsafe. It appears to happen at the exact time the application queries the battery. I can get the charger working if I follow the same disconnect/mains/reconnect sequence.
    3) The issues above also seems to occur when the battery updater checks the battery. The Macbook does not recognise that the charger is plugged in.
    4) If the charge is above 50%, then all works as expected. The coconutBattery application does not affect the charger. The Macbook works as normal.
I have tested with a brand new magsafe & a new battery - symptoms are identical. I have noticed several other non-consistent issues - the flashing green light/orange light on the magsafe connection, unusual battery life calculations (70+ hours).
I have performed calibrations & reset the PMU and the PRAM, and have all current updates. And I have spent a large amount of time in the forums looking at similar issues without much success. I am beginning to suspect the logic board (DC chip) is at fault, however I dont relish the idea of dropping my new Macbook at my local Apple Repair centre & getting it back three weeks later with the same issue.
My current cycles (on this new battery) are at 2 with a full charge capacity of 5142 mAh.
My questions to the community are:
Does anyone have a similar experience with these types of symptoms?
Or can someone illustrate on what would cause the Macbook to believe that the magsafe was disconnected? Whatever internal system call the coconutBattery application uses to recover details from the battery appears to trigger this behavior.
I would appreciate any thoughts on this one.
    Macbook Core 2 Duo - 2GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Just another observation, based on reading some of Apple's documentation regarding the AC charger:
"If the adapter works after this 60-second "rest," you most likely have a line noise issue with your power source that will require you to reset the adapter (by repeating this moment of rest) periodically. This happens when the AC adapter's over voltage protection feature senses ground noise and then turns off the adapter."
Could a sudden draw of power required at a 50% and below charge trip this over voltage protection feature? I know the charging draw varies based on current battery level.
I have tested this in UPS protected boards with the same result.

  • U330 Battery Issue--New Battery, Still Discharging Fast

Wrote a month or so ago about a faulty U330 battery.  I replaced it with a new one and am having the same issue--rapid discharge. For example, the battery power goes from 100% to 95% within 3 mintues, from 95% to 73% within 15 minutes.  With the original battery, I noticed that its power could stay at 0% for quite some time before the computer shut down. The battery lasts a decently long time, but the real issue is that I pretty much have spontaneous shutdowns since I can't predict the actual power remaining. Could this be a Win 7 issue and not an issue with the battery's actual capacity? Any other suggestions on how to fix this?

    Hey Gurbly,
Curious to know is the replacement battery that you bought is it from Lenovo or is it a generic brand battery ?
If this is a Lenovo battery, might I suggest the following link :
    http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/Welcome-FAQs-Knowledge-Base/How-can-I-increase-battery-life/ta-p/244800
If the above does not help, could you try the following.
    1. Replacement Battery to be drained.
    2. Replacement Battery to be fully charge. During this time do not turn on the U330
    3. Once fully charge, turn on computer and login to your operating system. Do not launch any application and if possible disable any apps that auto starts.
    4. Change the power management to "do not turn off hard drive and monitor" when battery is used
    5. Adjust screen brightness to 50%
    6. Leave the laptop idle,
    7. Check within 3-5 minutes if the battery level drops from 100% to 95%
    8. record your finding and reply back.

  • T400 strange power issue

I have a strange intermitent problem with my T400.
Usually, I put the machine into hibernate at night. I then usually unplug the device and all the lights go out.
Twice now, after doing the above, I have returned in the morning to find the battery light blinking orange - i.e., the battery has been nearly entirely drained. Opening the computer, the screen is clearly on, but black, and I can only get things going again by first holding down the power button to completely shut off the system (but why is it even on?), and then restarting. The battery is indeed entirely drained, but recharges normally. In "restarting", the computer behaves as if comming out of hibernate.
I have also noticed that on both occasions when this has occured, upon resuming I get a message from Windows that "the computer has been restarted and windows updates have been installed" (its set to automatic updates).
Does anyone have any idea whats going on? Is the automatic updates function somehow interferring with the hibernate causing the system to restart on its own and then get "frozen" in a power-draining state?

Yes - you have already identified the culprit!  Task Scheduler has the ability to wake the computer from hybernation.
Go to control panel and change the automatic update setting so that the files are downloaded, but not installed automatically. By default Windows installs updates at 3:00am, or at the next shutdown after the scheduled install.  If you change it to download and notify you, you will get a pop-up telling you that there are updates to be installed.
I travel with my thinkpad, so I have mine set to only notify me of updates, and not to download or install automatically.  This keeps me from getting my cellular connection bogged down with automatic downloads.
Just remember, when you see the icon, do the installations at some point!  Don't let them pile up.

  • White Macbook2,1 strange power issues

    So here's the issue:
The computer runs fine, and will be plugged in to the magsafe and operate just dandy... okay... so then say I remove the magsafe... sure no problem... the Macbook runs off of the battery which holds a charge for quite a while considering the cycle count is rather high... but the problem comes in when I plug the magsafe back into the computer... it turns off immediately. It powers back on and will operate just fine again, until I unplug the magsafe and then plug it back in, in which case, the process starts all over again.
    So:
    1. As long as the computer is plugged into the wall from the beginning it runs great.
    2. As long as the battery has a charge, the computer runs fine for hours, without being plugged in.
    3. If the computer is unplugged from the power supply, switches to battery power, and then is plugged back into the wall, then the machine powers itself off, immediately.
    4. It powers back on with no problem after this has happened.
    I have tried:
    1. Reseting the PRAM (OPTCMD+PR) at boot.
    2. Removing the battery and holding down the power button until the light flashes and it makes a high pitched beep noise. (Reseting the Power Management)
    3. Taking out the battery and cleaning the dust from the contacts.
I'm sort of at a loss at this point... anybody have any ideas/suggestions?
    Thanks

If you have reset the SMC then it is likely an issue with the circuitry that handles the switch. Take it to your nearest Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider to have them look at it.

  • Strange power issue

    Hi all.
I have acquired a 12" Aluminium (867MHz) PowerBook, which won't start up at all. It is completely standard, with no additional RAM installed.
The battery will charge through the power adaptor as normal, with the light correctly going from amber to green when fully charged.
But when the power button is pressed, nothing happens - nada, nothing, zilch.
I've tried two power adaptors, PRAM reset and PMU reset, and still nothing.
Any ideas? If this is likely to be a hardware failure, would it most probably be the DC-in board, DC-DC board or (ouch) the Logic Board?
    Many thanks in advance,
    JP
    PowerBook G4 12" Aluminium Mac OS X (10.3)

Could be bad memory, could be burned up cpu, could be burned out lcd. In the first 2 items, that's on the motherboard and soldered, so it becomes a logic board failure/issue. And let's not rule out a defective power button.

  • T520 Strange Power Issue

    Hi
I unfortunately split water on my T520. Subsequently, I let the laptop dry out which appeared to have done the trick.
I know have to follow a strange method to get the laptop powered on, if it has been switched off:
    Take battery out
    Remove CMOS battery
    Reinsert CMOS battery
    Put battery back in laptop
    Insert power lead
Then voila, the laptop then powers on. I cannot get the laptop powered on from boot using any other method! The laptop wakes from sleep fine. When the laptop is up and running, it's fine.
I have tried replacing the CMOS battery, but this didn't help.
    Any ideas?

    zoltanthegypsy wrote:
The fix was to replace the kbd/power button.  How long has it been since the spill?  Maybe more drying time will do the trick.
I wonder if first it's worth trying to spray (sparingly!) some WD-40 or electric contact cleaner onto the power button, then let that permeate into the switch mechanism and contacts? There's not much to lose since the ultimate fix is to replace the keyboard/power button assembly anyway.

  • IPod power problem - new battery did nothing?

I've recently inherited a 40GB 3G iPod. Before you laugh me off the boards and say 'well it's an old machine, whatdya expect?!' please, hear me out.
When it came to me, it had had a good three years of use, and the battery capacity seemed to only be a couple of hours, rather than the several I had heard most iPods sported. Also, I'd need to charge it every night or it wouldn't work in the morning, even if I hadn't used it all day, as if power were 'leaking out' when not in use.
So I thought well, free iPod, a £15 battery replacement is a small price to pay. Well it didn't really show THAT much improvement, and recently it's gone back to almost useless again. I'll get 30 minutes out of it on my way to work, switch it off AS SOON as I get in, and then when I turn it on 7hrs later, it shuts off almost straight away, as if it had been playing in my bag all day. Except it hasn't, and this happens every day.
I'm currently saving to buy a nice big 160GB model, but please, in the meantime, can anyone suggest a fix? I'd rather not have bought a £15 battery for nothing...

I too recently inherited a 40GB iPod from my sister and it won't charge. I have tried connecting it to multiple USB ports on three different PCs (I use Windows) and I just get an battery charge icon on the iPod but it doesn't show that it is charging. I then use my charger that plugs into an outlet and connects to the iPod with firewire cable and it shows that it is charging but when I unplug it it dies. I have let it sit overnight and still no charge. If it is plugged into the wall charger I can get it to work and everything seems fine until I unplug it.
So I assume that it is something with my battery but I don't know if the battery is bad or if some connection to the battery is damaged. I was thinking of getting one of those do it yourself battery replacements but not sure. Any ideas?

  • Battery/Power Issues When Battery is at 0%

    Hey, how's it going..
Few things I am a bit nervous about
I just got this Refurb MacBook Pro 15in. 2.66Ghz 32GB HDD and 512MB NVIDIA GFX
And my computer went into sleep mode and when I plugged it back in I had to do a manual reboot because the mouse wouldn't move.. So, I turned it back on let it die to see if it would happen again, and then the computer didn't even go to sleep mode..
What is going on? What should I do?
When it goes to sleep and it's charged this never happens..
Also, yesterday I calibrated the battery and left it uncharged for 11 hours.. Do I need to re-calibrate..
Some extra notes: basically the silver light on side shows up, and then about 10 seconds later the light shuts off, i plug it back in and have to hit the power button for it to get out of sleep mode, and then a silver screen comes up (just like when you start the computer and the apple logo comes up) and these lines come up on the bottom, letting the computer to resume..

If I'm understanding your slightly confusing post correctly, what you are seeing is normal. When the battery has 0% charge remaining and the MBP goes to sleep for lack of power, it first writes all the contents of RAM to the hard drive, then enters a deep sleep mode from which it must be waked using the power button instead of a simple keystroke. When waked from deep sleep, the machine takes some time (the amount of time depends on the amount of RAM that is installed in it) to read the contents that were in RAM when it went to sleep from the hard drive, and load them back into RAM. When it's finished doing that, you are back to exactly where you left off when the machine went to sleep. During the reloading time, the machine may not respond to any keyboard or trackpad actions, and a loading bar appears on a grey screen.
Deep sleep mode is a way of assuring that even if you have unsaved files open when your machine runs out of battery power and you can't connect to AC power for an extended time, no work will be lost.
Deep sleep mode is not invoked when the battery still holds some charge, and you put the machine to sleep manually or it goes to sleep by itself after your specified idle time has elapsed.
I don't fully understand your question about calibration. If you carried out the calibration process completely and correctly a day or two ago, nothing that I see in your post suggests that you need to repeat it now. If you didn't complete the calibration process as described in this article, then yes, you should repeat it from the beginning.
Post back if I've misinterpreted your questions or if you have others.

  • Ibook G3 Strange Power Problem

    Hi People
My Ibook has a strange power issue, it boots up when the battery is in. But as soon as you plug the power supply in it just switches off.
So basically it only works on the battery. The battery does charge though.
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Many thanks
    Luke

Hi Luke and Welcome to Apple Discussions,
This is the procedure from the service manual for the Dual USB:
"The computer runs with battery, but not with the power adapter plugged into
    wall outlet
    1. Try known-good power outlet.
    2. Try known-good power adapter and power cord.
    3. Reset the power manager by pressing the key combination Control-Option-Shiftpower.
Warning: Make sure you do not hold down the "fn" key when resetting the
    power manager.
Warning: Resetting the power manager will permanently remove a RAM disk, if
present, and all of its contents. You will also need to reset the date and time
(using the Date & Time control panel).
    4. Replace the DC board.
    5. Replace the logic board."

  • Brand new battery issue....installed myself, still depleting power quickly

    Good morning everyone.
I have one of the original Ipod Classic 160's. Its been a wonderful item thus far. The battery started losing power a little bit quicker than normal. I probably would only get about 10 hours out of it. Not too bad, but that's on all low settings.
I figured I'd go ahead and take a crack at opening it myself and put in a new battery (side note: you have to be really gifted and have the right tools to not damage the body of the ipod slightly).
The new battery is in. It immediately read only half power, so I plugged it into my home player to charge it. It charged really really quickly. I started playing it, and it started losing a little power quickly as well. I charged it again over night, and on my 40 minute trip to work this morning, it lost a little bit of power.
Obviously, one of my options is that I got a bad battery, BUT...a bad battery is usually a more dynamic problem then just the little discharge its doing. Plus, its discharging almost exactly like my old battery did. So, although Its still a possibility its a bad battery, I've got a theory that maybe there is a hardware or software issue????
That's my main question: Are there hardware and/or software issues that could cause a battery to drain, no matter how good the battery is?
Any other thoughts are welcome too.

I apologize for bumping my own question here, but I figured it would be best to share my experience for others to read.
I am sending this as a buyer beware. If you have the Classic 160, your battery should be 850 mah at minimum. This place I bought replacements from advertised a 550 mah as for the Ipod classic 80/160...not true.
Just an FYI. I know this is a rare situation, but just in case there is that one person that runs in to this. My initial battery from Apple was definitely dying, and it just happened to be coincidence that the new batteries didn't have enough "juice" to run it properly, so I continued to think it was me. 3 batteries later, its sorted.

  • DV4 1275 Power Issue, Battery not charging, Will not Power with AC only

    HP Pavillion DV4-1275mx
Battery will not charge, Laptop will not fully turn on with battery in (battery not charging at all).  Laptop will not power on at all with no battery using only AC and with battery it will attempt to load and die due to lack of charge.
Have tried 3 diff HP chargers.
The orginial 1 that came with the laptop is dead and will not charge anything. Tried it on a diff HP laptop and not recognizing any power
The 2nd one is OE HP laptop diff model but same wattage that came with my gfs work laptop.  I have charge my laptop with it before in the past however it is not charging the battery now either
The 3rd is a aftermarket generic one that my g/f bought in the airport and it works with hers as well however I have never used it on mine.
I have tried hard resetting.. taking out battery, holding power for a min and replugging everything.
Also when I remove the battery and plug in either of the chargers that do work the power LED are "not" lighting up on the front or the LED where the AC plugs into the laptop.  Which makes you think the charger is bad however the 2 working chargers do work on my other 2 HP laptops.
If i plugin one of the 2 working chargers with the battery it will go through the boot process and as its starting windows it just dies and shuts off.  The power led by the DC jack does light up and the charging light on the front lights up. However this only works when I unplug the battery and plug the AC charger in. After the laptop boots up to starting windows and dies. I have to remove the battery and replace it to get the LEDS to light back up..  If the MB was bad I wouldnt think any of the LED's would come on nor would the laptop boot up to the starting windows. If  keep trying to turn it on the booting time is shortened as the battery is not holding a charge and sometimes it only makes a few seconds and then just dies out.
I dont have alot of money to spend so I was hoping maybe you could point me in the right direction.
Should I buy the replacement part OE charger for my specific laptop? (not sure if its going to be much diff than the others since they are all 65 watt chargers)
Should I buy a new battery as well?
Or does this sound like a short problem in the mother board or a solder issue with the DC plugin?
If it is an issue with the motherboard I do not want to go through the hassle of buying the battery and charger as I will end up having to just replace the laptop
If you could please advise me what direction to go I would be so greatful.

Dude, I have the same exact problem with mine. It's not a cheap fix either. It definitely is the motherboard.
I'm no expert, but I believe the problem is a dead capacitor on the motherboard preventing it to build up a charge.
I spoke with an HP rep, which told me it's $398 for them to fix.
I let them know that I didn't have another $400 to put into this laptop. So, they suggested I try reseating the motherboard. And also reseating the memory modules.
    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01597750.pdf
That is a pdf of the laptop's manual. It'll help in reseating. Page ( 59 ) for the motherboard. Page ( 67 ) for the memory modules.
This hasn't helped at all with mine, but maybe it'll help with yours!

  • TouchSmart tx2-1370us HUGE issues with new battery PLEASE HELP I AM DESPERATE!!!!!

I purchased a new battery for my laptop. I got a LHP-41XT which is supposed to last longer... the following issues I initially thought were because I got a defective battery but I replaced it for another one and they are still happening:
Battery is fully charged. When power cord is disconnected after a random amount of time the computer just dies while the charge does not even get down to 80%. The computer does not even go into the shut down process, it just completely dies.
When trying to turn on the computer with battery it starts to boot up and after a few seconds it completely shuts off. After that no matter how many times I press the bottom to turn it on it just wont even try to turn on. I have to turn it on with the cord.
To try to remediate the problem I have tried and failed the following:
     -  Get a new battery of the same model in case the problem was the battery
     -  Calibrate the battery using every single option there is (changing power profile to "Calibrate," letting the computer discharge completly without using it, letting the computer discharge completly using it, letting the computer discharge completly without using it in while in safe mode) but the computer just keeps on dying.
     -  Change all the power settings so the computer does not hibernate, go into shut down, or does anything when the power levels go down.
     -  Erase completely the battery drives so the computer does not try to detect the battery charge.
     -  Upgraded the computer bios to the latest version
     -  Replaced BIOS battery
Please someone help me I do not know what else to do and I don't want to keep wasting money to try stuff that does not work...

No I haven't and HP seems not to care about the problem so guess what. No more HP's for me anymore....

  • New battery not charging and no power supply reported

The battery for my G4 17inch powerbook had expired and a new one was needed. A brand new battery has been purchased and inserted into the machine. With the old battery the charger would go green then quickly amber before going off. With the new battery the light never comes on and in the battery info in the operating system it is listed as a new battery with 1 charge but the power supply section is not listing the power as connected. However with no batterys inserted the power supply will power and run the machine.
Can anyone offer any advise of something I could try or is it likely to be a dead laptop / charging circuit?
    Thanks

There's 4 components in the charging circuit: power adapter, DC-in card, battery, and logic board. If you can run on power without the battery, and does not run when you insert a battery, that suggests that the DC-in board may be OK. So ... power adapter works, assume DC-in card works, new battery assume it works ... if you accept those assumptions, then you have a logic board issue.
