Strange problem renders MBP Useless / Wont Turn On..

About two weeks ago, Apple Update installed some updates to my MBP when I shut it down. I left it updating and when I returned the computer screen was black and the standby light which normally fades in and out was just solid white.
I searched the internet for solutions and tried all the ones I could (Taking the battery and power supply out & holding the power button; Taking out one RAM or the other, etc..) but none of these solutions worked so I took it into the Apple Store. They told me they had no idea what was wrong with it but suspected it was the main logic board, they took it in for repair and a week later I had my MBP back and working.
Normally when using my MBP I just shut the lid to standby it and rarely shut it down or restart it (I'm guessing that from then til now I didn't shut it down).. When I first restarted it today the exact same problem happened. As you can guess I was very annoyed and nothing I do to it will fix it. I don't want this to keep happening and I don't want to keep have to get it repaired (especially when my warranty runs out as a logic board is aroun £600).
So does anyone have ANY idea what could be causing this problem to keep happening to my MBP?
No hardware was attached at the time of it breaking (normally I have an external HD); I installed Leopard around new year which served me well until now; The only thing I can think of is my power supply being broken and causing the laptop to somehow break and I can't think of any kind of software that would do this?!
Thanks

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It sounds like your Mac froze and Apple thought the problem was the logic board and did the repair.
Evidently, the problem is not the logic board, unless you got a second defective one, which seems unlikely. I don't know what the problem is, but evidently it wasn't found and fixed by the repair. So you need to contact Apple and tell them that the logic board replacement did not cure the problem. If you are nearing the end of your warranty period, be sure and get a case number. The case number will document that the problem first occurred under warranty. When you document that the problem first occurred under warranty, Apple will honor the warranty until that problem is fixed, even if the warranty runs out in the meantime.
Another possible culprit for freezing might be your hard drive, so you might want to be sure you have all your data backed up and keep it backed up.
Open Disk Utility (in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder). Click on your hard drive by brand name and then on the First Aid tab. Click on "Repair Disk Permissions" and repeat until there is nothing left to repair. When complete, click on "Verify Disk" and repair if necessary. You will need to boot from your install disc and navigate to the Disk Utility on it to repair the start up disk. Also check that the S.M.A.R.T. status is verified. If S.M.A.R.T. status is not verified, or if you get any messages in red that cannot be repaired, call Apple.
Also, you could run the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test, just to see if anything shows up. If you get an error code, call Apple.
Another possibility might be software corruption. I am no expert on software, but the usual approach is to do a fresh installation of the OS. You can do this using an Archive and Install, but you should back up in advance just in case. Another thing might be to download the combo update for 10.5.2 from the Apple site if you have been doing your updates from Software Update instead. Always verify the disk and repair permissions both before and after installing any software.
I don't know if any of this will help or not--just some things to try. But you do need to be persistent at pursuing it so it can be resolved under warranty.
Good luck!

  • MBP 2011 wont turn on after upgrading RAM

    Hey every buddy
Today I decided to upgrade my 2011 MBP and change its ram with 1 brand new ADATA with the sane bus! now I have a problem, after I changed them my Machine wont turn on! even its battery lights are not working!
Please tell me fellas what is going on! Its deadand i need to Buy another Computer? :~/
    besst Regards

I don't know what a "sane bus" is but I'd suggest replacing the new RAM with the old RAM and seeing if the MBP works again. If it does, the problem is with the new RAM. Apple RAM requirements are more demanding than for PC's so it's essential to buy RAM from reliable vendors who specialize in Macs. It takes more than just fitting the DIMM socket for RAM to work in a Mac.

  • Wifi turns off when connected to mobile card, but wont turn back on

I have a Sprint wireless internet card.  When I connect to the mobile card, the Wifi radio turns off.  I'm fine with it turning off while I'm connected to the mobile card, but the problem is that it wont turn back on when I disconnect the mobile card.  If I try to use the button or other basic on/off switches in windows to turn it on, they wont respond.  The only way I can get it back on is to run a troubleshoot, which shows that the radio is disabled and asks if I want to apply the fix that will turn it back on.
    I'm on a Toshiba Satellite A665-S5170, Windows 7 (64), in the U.S.
    Thank you.

    Hi
So does this also happen if you dont connect the notebook to external monitor? So you can determine what is causing this problem.
If the notebook doesnt shut down without external monitor you should try to update the BIOS and display driver. Both updates you can find on the Toshiba website:
    http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com => Support & Downloads => Download Drivers
Do you close the lid if you have connected the external monitor?
    What OS are you using?
Furthermore it would be interesting to know how you cleaned the notebook. Therefore I use compressed air spray that can blow out the dust from the cooling ventilators and you must not disassemble the notebook.
    Bye

  • Wireless wont turn back on

My laptop ( cq60-430ca ) has a wireless kill switch that is either blue or red next to the power button,
i was getting wireless before, and the light kept switching between the colours whenever i was using the internet,
i was curious as to whether or not the kill switch still worked ( did not in ubuntu )
i pressed it and it turned the wireless off, but the problem is that it wont turn back on now,
i rebooted and went into the bios, and saw that in my boot options that "Network" had a "!" infront of it, meaning that it could not boot up from the network, so i saw where it was disabled in the bios and turned it back on,
i booted back into Arch and saw that i still could not find any wireless networks, even though i am still in my home,
i am using wicd ( currently connected through lan )
this is the output of ifconfig -a:

As far as trying to power up your device, make sure it has a good charge and then hold the button on the top of the phone and the home button on the faceplate together until the apple appears on the screen.

If the battery was empty (and it may then take 10 to 15 minutes of charging before it will respond), then have you tried a reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds, after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the equivalent of a reboot.

I would instead say you have a problem since nearly all IPs work as advertised.  IF you do have a bad phone, take it into an Apple store and get a replacement.  Hope you didn't jailbreak your phone though as Apple probably will tell you, you broke it, you fix it.

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You should try booting from the OS X install disc. Then open Disk Utility from the Utilities Menu (don't run the installer). I fear something has gone awry with your hard drive.

My ipod touch 5th generation wont charge or turn on at all,
i upgraded to iOS 6.1.3 and after that my ipod started having trouble charging, at first i though the lightning cable was the problem so i bought 2 more lightning cable chargers and my ipod still would'nt charge, so it died. now the only thing my ipod does is when i try to turn it on it shows the apple logo and then the screen goes off and does it again for a few times and then the screen stays off and my ipod gets really hot but wont turn on for the rest of the day help!!

The hotness indicate a hardware problem.

  • Computer slower and a few other strange problems since upgrading to SL

    Hi all,
About a month ago, I upgraded my mid-2009 MBP to SL. I'm now on 10.6.1. Ever since the upgrade, my computer's been somewhat slower than it was when I ran Leopard (although many people I know say their machines are faster). I did restart several times at one point, and that seemed to speed it up, although it still experiences delays I didn't have before. I've also had a bunch of strange issues:
    1) Safari is most noticeably slow, especially when using something like Top Sites on Safari 4. I alleviated this problem somewhat by setting new tabs to open a blank window rather than Top Sites, but even so, Safari is generally slower, gives me 'pinwheels' often, and also is less stable.
    2) The other day, I restarted to find that all fonts except system fonts had been mysteriously deactivated. As a designer, I rely heavily on my many fonts, which I manage using Linotype FontExplorer.
    3) Today, I opened my computer up after having it sleeping in a backpack, and it had turned off. It was not out of battery; it had just turned off for no apparent reason.
    4) Judging by Activity Monitor, RAM is being used somewhat more heavily by the system, contrary to the advertisements of a 'lighter' footprint for SL as compared to Leopard. However, according to Activity Monitor (which I check frequently), the processor does not appear to be getting taxed any more heavily than under Leopard, which makes the sluggishness more inexplicable.
    5) Yesterday, I could not get my computer to recognize my Time Machine backup disc. After restarting, it worked, but this is a pain.
I appreciate any advice I can get. Does anyone else have similar problems or solutions? Or is the general consensus that these are SL bugs that Apple will work out by about 10.6.4 or so?
    Thanks,
    Nathan

I began this thread awhile ago, but the essence of it is that I had a number of strange problems, although mostly my computer was just slower, when upgrading from Leo to SL.
I've now wiped my HD and re-installed SL. It seems faster, although there are still a few issues:
    1) iWork (Pages, Numbers) has very weird coloring. All the text looks light blue and/or cyan, and I can't fix it.
    2) Although initially Safari worked great, lately it's been going back to its habits of being slow and showing strange things like chopping up the 'Top Sites' view, i.e. rendering it in an off way.
    3) Adobe CS3 will not install properly. I get them loaded up, but when I try to launch a program, I get an error that says "licensing for this product has stopped working". I cannot get to the 'activate' page, even though I uninstalled and deactivated CS3.
In the interest of full disclosure, I did restore my home account after clean installing SL-- maybe I should have brought the files over folder by folder rather than bringing back my whole home folder with its settings? I wonder if I accidentally brought over Adobe's FLEXnet folder too.
Also, does anyone know if Adobe CS3 can cause these problems with Safari and other programs? It just seems that the whole machine was slower after installing CS3, even though I wasn't running the programs.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Nate

Claire, please post your machine specs as requested. There are some variants of the MBP with specific hardware issues. Example: the older "silver key" MBPs with 2.2Ghz and faster processors can have a defective video chipset that produces a black screen or distorted video. That problem is covered under an Apple program that will fix this at no cost to you if you computer is that model.
Do "About this Mac" from your Apple menu and, in the resulting window, click the "More Info..." button. That launches System Profiler for you. The first screen looks like this:
The second line, "Model Identifier" (or "Machine Model" if you are running OS10.4) precisely identifies your MBP variant. Post that, and include it in your equipment info in your profile for future posts. That means people don't have to ask, and you get faster help that is targeted to your specific model. Saves everybody a bunch of keystrokes and you get better advice.
