Strange Reconnect Media Problem

I recently moved my computer to a new residence and had to disconnect my external media drives from my computer. When I started up FCP yesterday, I found, not surprisingly, that all my clips were disconnected from their media files. So, I proceeded to try to reconnect them. Just as a test, I selected one video clip file in my browser and hit reconnect media. But when I did this, the only "file" that showed up in the list was the character ". Just the quotation mark. So, I am unable to reconnect " to any file, because I have no file named ". The strange thing about this is that if I close this project (which is a close copy of another project) and open the original project, all my files show as connected to their media. For a variety of reasons, I don't want to use the original project file. I want to use the copy. Any ideas why this project (which I've used for 6 months with no problems) is suddenly not connecting to the media but instead is giving me quotation marks?
Thanks!

I echo the posters above. This is a major bummer Apple! How is this fixed? In my scenario, I started a project on my raid, had to pull in clips from a network drive , which ended up becoming offline. When it was placed online again, the clips had to be reconnected, and instead of there being clip names for these in the reconnect media window, there is only " any attempts to get around this either by selecting multiple clip names or single ones are met with "
Any help would greatly be appreciated!!

  • Reconnect Media Problem

One of my files on the FCP7 Timeline has gone offline. The file name is Clip #366. But when I Reconnect Media it will ONLY give me the option to Reconnect to Clip #367!
Out of frustration I tried to Reconnect to Clip #367 but then it wouldn't even allow me to do this!
What, if anything, am I doing wrong?

There won't be sync issues due to re-naming, however, when you export from QT you'll stamp it with a new timecode which will cause problems. Here's what I would try.
    1. Open clip in Qt and export, as mentioned.
    2. Bring that clip into FCP.
    3. Look at the Media Start timecode of your original clip in the Browser window and make a note of it.
    4. Double click the new duplicate of your clip to bring it to the Viewer, and ensure the playhead is at the very start.
    5. Go to Modify>Timecode... and enter the start timecode from you r original clip in the Source TC: Timecode box.
    6. Save.
    7. Reconnect to this new master clip, with it's new timecode.

  • Reconnect media problems!

I've been working on a project with no problems. But this morning when i opened up the project, 11 of my files went offline. The drive where this project is, is on and working fine. When I try to reconnect the files, it give me a "is missing. no name of the file. sometimes it will give me the file name and when i try to reconnect, nothing happens. I've searched this forum and i don't see any solutions yet...
I am using Final Cut 6.
any advice is greatly appreciated as this project is due on monday.

okay, i spoke too soon. I did what you said and reconnect to the drive that i transfered to... and it worked!!! now, will i have to reconnect every time? to that drive because at this rate i'm reconnecting one at a time..
but thank you so much for your advice!!!

  • Strange reconnect media anomoly

the other day, when i opened a project all the media was there and it came up fine...no off line items.
when i opened the same project yesterday, it said i had several off line items and asked for me to reconnect the media. i tried, but the media didn't appear on the drive so i couldn't reconnect.
when the project opened, the media WAS there - nothing was offline. now, i hadn't moved any media, renamed it, etc. this was odd.
also, sometimes my composites go off line and i have to re-do them. i had to do this on 3 separate instances with one composite. the file was gone, the movie file was gone, all of it, and there was nothing to reconnect to. and i hadn't changed a thing.
so what bothers me is one time the project is fine when i open it, and then i re-open it later and it says it's either missing media that IS really missing, though i don't know why, or it says it's missing media and the media is NOT missing and the files are not offline when the project opens.
what gives. i tried FCP5 rescue but all it did was change my layout setting on the desktop when i trashed and restored the preferences. so maybe i'm not using fcp rescue right. is this a disk permissions thing or something else?
    thanks in advance,
    carl

Not being able to watch you work, my first impression is this is a disk error. You'd be advised to either back up the drive or know how to recapture everything if you need to.
You can run all kinds of repair and diagnostic utilities on the drive, Disk Warrior might be a good place to start since all it does is rebuild directories, which is sort of what it sounds like you've got.
Hope you get more advice soon.

  • Can only Reconnect Media one file at a time

I posted this problem almost two months ago, and was told at the time that it was a bug in FCP 6.0 and 6.0.1, but was fixed in 6.0.2. Well, I finally upgraded to 6.0.2, and the problem remains. What is strange, is that after I upgraded, the first two bins of files reconnected correctly, but ever since then none of the others have (and I tried the third bin right after the second, no changes at all to the computer). So I'm having this problem with both my G5 dual 2 gig (OS 10.4.9) and my Intel Macbook Pro (OS 10.4.11). Any ideas? The problem:
I'm trying to relink media I have on an external firewire drive, but when I click Relink, FCP only relinks the first file in my list. The files are all there, in the same location, and have not had any name or reel changes - each one relinks fine individually, but I can't get FCP to link more than 1 file at a time.
Procedures: I select all the files from a certain reel that are listed as being offline, then File>Reconnect Media. All the files I've selected are listed in the top half of the window, with the first file underlined. I have Search Single Location checked. I select Locate (though same thing happens if I select Search and locate the file myself), Show: Video Files (tho same thing happens if I select All Files), I've checked Match Name and Reel Only (though again same thing happens if this is not checked), and I checked Reconnect All Files in Relative Path. FCP finds the first file, and I click "Choose" - and the first file is listed in the bottom part of the window, but only that file.
Everything else in FCP works fine.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

I am not having the same issue, and I am running 10.5.2 OS and 6.0.2 FCP. I also have FCP 6.0.2 on a computer running 10.4.11 and I have duplicate media on both systems, and bring a file back and forth and don't have to connect the media one at a time. This was a wide spread problem with 6.0.1, and the 6.0.2 update fixed that for most people. Why you are still having that problem is odd. Try trashing your FCP prefs with FCP RESCUE, and also try repairing your permissions with the Disk Utility.

  • Odd Reconnecting Media Behavior

Apologies, one more question. When I use the "Reconnect Media" option in the browser to have an image or clip point to a different file, that change is not reflecting in FCP, the Viewer, Canvas and Timeline are all still showing the old file. What is odd is when I use the "Reveal In Finder" option is the image/clip is pointing to the new file. So it looks like the change of the file is applied, but it is not showing in FCP. Why would FCP show the old file, but both "Reconnect Media" and "Reveal In Finder" be pointing to the new file.
    As always, thanks!
    lance

I have actually had this happen on my system a couple of times. Since upgrading to FCP7, haven't seen it. It was an intermittent thing that I never completely diagnosed.
My solution was to rename the new file slightly (Map.pct to MapX.pct) and then drag the newly renamed file from the finder into the bin. Click on the new clip in the bin, hit command C to copy it. Then click on the clip you want to replace in the timeline, hit option V and deselect everything but content, and paste the new content in. You now have your new clip into the sequence without disturbing anything.
This is/was not a solution to the problem, but rather a way to keep the edit going.
    Good luck!

  • Final Cut 5 - Won't recognize video files when I try to reconnect media

Help! Somehow FCP5 no longer recognizes my clips as video files.
The problem started when I transferred some clips to another drive so I could reformat my primary external drive. (It's new, and had been formatted for PC, and I felt I needed to reformat it for Mac.) I moved the files off the drive using my PC, held them on another external PC-formatted drive, then used MacDrive 7 to put them back once the formatting was done.
When I plugged the newly formatted drive back in, my Mac no longer recognized the files as video files because the file extension had been removed... It thought they were "Unix executable files." I added ".mov" to the end of the file names and they then seemed to work fine in QuickTime.
But FCP will not recognize them now... At first, when I try to "reconnect media," they are grayed out; when I select "All files" in the Reconnect Media dialog and they appear to be available. But when I choose one nothing happens and it goes back to the Reconnect Media dialog.
Did the back and forth between PC and Mac file systems screw up my files somehow?

Did the back and forth between PC and Mac file systems screw up my files somehow?
Yes. Unfortunately the move has almost certainly caused the loss of the resource data that would have been (invisibly) attached to those files.
By adding a specific .mov extension after the fact you will have helped the Mac correctly identify the file type / asscoiations but also significantly you will have physically changed the filename eg from "clip" to "clip.mov". This means that when you come to reconnect the media in FCP , then FCP will be looking for files that no longer exist at the given path eg when specifically looking for our example clip called "clip" of course it won't find it.
Try this as a test... first remove the ".mov" extension from one or more of the clips, select those clips and press Cmd-Opt-I to open an Info window for the selection. You'll see an "Open with:" popup and in that popup you should choose QuickTime Player (if its a Unix Executable then it will initially list Terminal as the appropriate app, you have to choose Other... then in the open dialog choose Enable > All Applications and then navigate to and select the Quicktime Player app as the appropriate app). After you've done that restart FCP and see if you can now reconnect to those clips.

  • Importing EDLs and Reconnecting Media... Who can answer this question?

Hi, happy holidays! What am I missing here:
I have an EDL with in and out points from a number of different source files.
I import the EDL in Final Cut Pro as a sequence.
I click on the sequence. The edit decisions can be seen in the timeline, with all of the source files designated as offline.
I select the timeline and attempt to reconnect the media.
The media reconnects, no problem, but the edit decisions aren't in place. In other words, all of the media files begin at the beginning of the source media files (i.e. 04:00:00:00), rather than at the edit decision in and out points for each of the edits in the timeline.
Surely I'm just missing a step here, right?
    Thanks, Mtbakerstu

    Hi Jerry,
The source files have been have been re-encoded with a different codec, but they are exactly the same insofar as duration of the source files, and the timecode hour and frame rate they have been assigned, as well as the name I have assigned the files.
I am simply trying to trick the EDL into recreating a timeline which utilizes source files which have been encoded differently than the original source files... And the timeline is recognizing these files.... only it won't cue the files up to correct timecode point in the files.
    Hope that makes sense.
    Thanks,

  • Reconnect Media - Unable to Reconnect All Files in Relative Path

I have a project that I have restored from a DLT backup. The project file and the all the media are now on a SAN which I access from my G5. Since this project originated on a different editor's computer all of the clips in my project are ostensibly offline within my project. All of the media files are located in a single capture scratch folder on the SAN with the same filenames and reel numbers. As such, I figured that when I used "Reconnect Media" with "Reconnect All Files in Relative Path" checked, all of the files would automatically relink. However, everytime I attempt to do this, the only file that is reconnected is the original file which I manually selected to establish the file path to the rest of my media. If I use the "Search" functionality and instruct FCP to search the capture scratch folder one file at a time, without fail, it will automatically find the media and reconnect it. Yet, I cannot seem to batch reonnect, as it were.
My question is this: If all of the media files are located in the same capture scratch folder (i.e. same relative path), why won't FCP automatically reconnect all the files in that folder to the corresponding offline clips?
I have attempted to reconnect the media on two different machines. The same issue arose on both machines. This leads me to believe that the problem may be a result of some issue with the filesystem on the SAN. Also, I have run FCP rescue and attempted a reconnect with both a clean backup and entirely new preference files, to no avail.

    Hi Nat,
I don't have a direct solution, and you might you've been doing this already. Although you didn't describe this. I think that what I would try to do is:
    - Copy the project (backup).
    - Open the project, and when it tells you that 132 clips and 714 render-files are offline, I'd select the checkboxes in order to 'Forget' the files.
    - Hit OK.
    - FCP 'forgot' all the links to the original files. So you forced errors from that perspective by doing this.
    - Try to reconnect again.
    Just a thought...
    All the best
    Rienk
PS What version FCP are you running?

  • Messing up when reconnect media

    Dear All,
I always use reconnect media function, as we have 2-3 editors working at the same time on different machine and even locations. Everything goes well until connecting STP files.
Now we are close to the end of the project and have been sending sound files to STP for sweetening. The problems is when we reconnect those STP files on another machine (of course, we copied all the media files to another machine as well), FCP connects to wrong files and has different sound from another take.
    What's wrong? Please help.
    Thanks.

    Joanne,
I believe you are still under warranty. I recommend backing up your data and taking your iBook in to be looked at. Your logic board might be failing.

  • Reconnecting Media to offline clips

    Hi all,
I have an interesting situation with a client.  Never seen this problem/scenario before.
    Here is the setup....
--> Client is logging all footage on her computer.
--> I provided her with a formatted Excel document that will allow me to import a batch list.
--> I converted her Excel logs to a txt document, then successfully imported the batch list into FCP.
--> After importing the log, FCP appears to like the log information.  Everything is in its proper column,  the clip icon (still with a red slash through it) and all of the necessary info (Clip name, Media Start and Media End, Log notes, Reel, etc) are all properly placed.  FCP Even calculates the duration of the clip for us.
The problem is, when I try to "Reconnect Media" in an effort to connect the log information in FCP to the actual clips, it is a massive fail.
What I am seeing when trying to Reconnect Media....
--For starters, I notice that all of the logging entries in the browser are checkmarked as offline.
--When I try to Reconnect Media, the RM dialog is asking me to search for the NAME of the individually logged clip, rather than the REEL.
--RM cannot successfully reconnect media.  At best, I turn off the Match Name option (Even though the REEL name is spelled perfectly in comparison to the actual video file), then manually select the clip to reconnect to.  Interestingly, upon reconnecting, FCP has renamed the REEL in the browser as "0", rather than using the actual reel name.
Any help as to how I can import the clients log files(36 pages of info) and connect them to the actual video files?
    Thanks,
    Matt

If the clips are not actually missing, you could try to refresh the timeline by using cmd-0 and then going to the timeline options tab. Then select name only where it says "thumbnail display". Press ok to accept the change, then repeat the process to add thumbnails back to your timeline.

  • Can't Reconnect Media

I recently moved several capture files from my internal HD to an external one. I did "Reconnect Media" to update their location and they worked fine. Later, Final Cut started asking me to recconect the files manually as it loaded sequences. Eventually, it stopped working alltogether and the files cannot be reconnected. The reconnect window looks like this: http://img78.imageshack.us/img78/1055/picture13tv8.png
If I try to do locate and select the correct file, the connect button greys out and I'm forced to close the window.

I actually found a deeper problem... I actually got some files with the above error to connect, but some still refuse. The files that don't work somehow got corrupted and no longer appear to work. Opening them in Quicktime shows a file with no sound and no video.
This happened to me a while back ... same thing ... external drive containing all my files. One day FCP wouldn't reconnect and when i checked the files they came up as generic icons ... (in this case) no audio.
I had to go to my backup set and copy over the bad audio files. Everything worked fine after that. Needless to say, since that time i've maintained numerous backups of my media files in case this happens again.
I've always suspected directory damage caused the original problem.

  • Reconnect media links lost

"Media Offline" message appears spontaneously in my timeline on several frames (@15 in 54 min video). The media file there on my external HD where it's always been. I can find it. When I go to reconnect, the message in Search is: " is missing. This is new! Somehow it doesn't see or know the file name although it is on the frame (such as "scan003"). What is going on? It has been doing this for about three weeks and getting worse and at first it did recognize the file and I was able to reconnect the link by hand, but even then it would lose the connection the next time I opened the program or spontaneously-probably with autosave. FCP5, Dual G4, 10.4.5 Seemed to start with the OSX automatic update from Apple and got especially bad with the last one this week. That's about when the "is missing message began to show up.

i have exactly the same problem. On one of our 3 systems projects seem to gradually be becoming infected with this problem, and i think it makes it impossible to reconnect media once it has forgotten the clip names.
i have tried trashing preferences and still seems to be happening.
another person has this problem here: http://forums.creativecow.net/cgi-bin/newreadpost.cgi?forumid=8&postid=885666
But in my case it is happening with entire sequences. When trying to reconnect the "Files to reconnect" window simply says:
    Offline Files:
    " is missing.
    and nothing else.
We had a G-RAID drive self destruct recently and perhaps this has caused some corruption somewhere, but this is a new project with sequences copied in from systems that were fine.

  • Is there anyway to reconnect media in FCPX?

I was given the Project file folder, but the media was in an open folder and not in the original Event one. Every attempt to reconnect the media has failed to work.
It's looking for the files on another computer so reconstructing the folder structure won't work. Reimporting the media and doing a replace edit hasn't worked either because it doesn't know where the in and out points were originally.
Any other ideas on what I could or should be doing to rectify this problem.
    Thanks,
    Ray

I just did some checking on a similar red icon problem.  If you Control-Click on the red icon that is the clip that's missing, you will see the menu option to Reveal in Finder. Selecting this will pop up a finder window pointing to the "file" the icon uses.  In most cases it will be in the Final Cut Pro Events/Original Media folder.  Also in most cases that "file" will be an alias ("shortcut" in windows terminology).  If you then Control-Click on that file and choose Get Info, you will see not only the folder path to the alias file, but also the folder path that references the actual media file.  That file must be in the original path specified in the alias for the alias to really point to the file that FCP X is looking for.
I know a lot of people are moving files and folders for FCP X using Finder, but, if you think about it, that method would likely mess up these aliases the icons are linked to.  That's why I have seen some instructional videos say that the best way to actually move these events and projects around to different disks is to do so in FCP X.  The drawback is that sometimes you cannot do these edits while background rendering is in progress and must wait until it completes.  I know this is the case with project renames, etc.
Anyway, after I saw what was going on with my own red icons, I simply copied the original media file from where I had moved it (mistakenly using Finder) and put it into the original location.  I then selected the event with the red icon clip in it and did a File Import of that media file again.  Bingo!  It filled in the red icon with the clip and propagated the change to my timeline where the clip was residing in my project.  Problem solved.
Now don't get me wrong, it should simply have a Reconnect Media function, but until then we have to do what we have to do

  • Reconnect Media - Will only do one file at a time. (all files is checked)

I found one Google search that said this may be a bug... http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/8/1047891 and it's really bothering me since I have about 500 more media files to connect.
When I select multiple files in my Project File Browser, right click, hit Reconnect Media... It opens the Reconnect Files window. Then I hit "Locate", navigate to the folder holding the files (Reconnect All files in Relative Path is checked), select the file, confirm, then hit connect... Only one file (the first one selected) reconnects.
It's worse than that for me, now the file is Connected in my Project File browser, but it still doesn't reconnect in my sequences. So now I have to go in the sequence and right click on the individual clips, and manually reconnect those as well.
At this point it take 6 plus clicks per file missing, times two because I have to reconnect these clips in the sequences as well... times 500 because that's how many offline files I have.
My lord, I've already done this to half of the project, I can't do it any more... where am I going wrong or is this a bug? If so, please tell me there is a workaround.
The file I'm working in is a feature film, so it's huge... I can't start over at this point.
    Thanks for your time!
    -Monty

The only multiple files it will reconnect are the ones that are already connected.
I hope I figured it out but need more advice. It may be that the files that won't connect do not have a visible file extension ".mov". How can I get these files to shoe ".mov" at the end of their names without manually renaming them all?
And the reason this is happening is I was using reference files to edit a movie, now I've been given new hard drives with the final uncompressed footage but same file names for each clip... plus the new hard drives I'm using have different names.
    Thanks for your time!
    -Monty
