Strange resolution problem mac mini 2010 w lion 10.7.3

Hi!
I use XBMC as a media center client, and did the update to 10.7.3 yesterday. This update gave me a problem with the resolution on a 55 "LED TV.
If xbmc is running and I switch the source on the television to for example, tuner or blueray player, and then switch back to the mac mini running xbmc, the resolution changes, everything is so big on the screen that you cant read it. I need to force down xbmc and turn back to lion, and then start xbmc again.xbmc is running 1080i 50 Hz PAL, the same for lion.
My mini is always on, and if i leave it over night or some hours, the resolution in lion changes to 960x540 60 Hz NTSE by itself. therfore i belive the problem is lion and not the xbmc. it looks like the mini forget the settings. I tried to format the mini and installed a frech copy of lion 10.7.3 Still problems!
Anyone?  please help me, I use the Mini very much and this is an annoying problem

I ran a few more tests and this problem has something to do with the Video Card sensing the TV (or at least I think). The resolution drops to 960x540 HiDPI 60 Hz NTSC when I return from TV to HDMI (Mac Mini) after any of the following:
1. Screen saver was activated
2. Screen was switched off by Lion Power management
I don't beleive this to do with any application running like Plex or XMBC. I tested this with no applications running just what ever Lion loads in the begining.
I tried reseting the PMU but that didn't help.
The only workarround I found was not to uese any screen savers and not allow the screen to switch off (Power Saving Options)
I have submitted a bug report to Apple hopefully they will look into it.
Hope this helps.

    Good luck.
    My config :

    HDD WD 1To (upgrade 2013)

At the store they reinstall it with snow leopard, not mountain lion.

  • Lion Grafik Problem Mac mini 2010

    Hallo,

I have a mac mini 2010 that came with snow leopard installed. I recently upgraded to Lion, however I need to do the Apple hardware test. When I attempt to load the hardware test by holding down the D key when booting the Mac Mini the hardware test fails to load. What do I need to do to load the Hardware test?

Boot from your original OS X Installer Disc One that came with your computer.  After the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the diagnostic screen appears.  Run the extended tests for a minimum of two or three hours.  If any error messages appear note them down as you will need to report them to the service tech when you take the computer in for repair.

  • Mac Mini 2010 and Windows 7

    Hello All,
I searched the forums to see if my question had already been answered, but I couldn't find it. My apologies in advance if this, in fact, is solved. I am having some issues with my installation of Windows 7 on my Mac Mini 2010 model 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo. I used boot camp to create a partition, installed windows 7 64 bit from a copy that I bought from school, and it did install.
    Problem 1
The problem that I am having is that the operating system states that 4GB of RAM is available and 3.5GB is usable. I currently have 8GB installed(Not factory, I purchased third party) and it reads fine in Mac OS X. Does anyone else have this problem or a similar one?
    Problem 2
The screen will not expand fully in Windows 7. I have an ASUS 21.5in HD screen that will display up to 1080p connected to the HDMI connection on my mac. When I boot up, the screen will display in a smaller size(about 3/4 the size of the screen) while the rest of the screen is black.
    What have I tried?
I have updated to the latest boot camp package on the Apple website to make sure I have the latest drivers for my NVIDIA GeForce 320M card.
I have tried playing with the resolution in Windows 7 to display the maximum possible resolution
I have made sure to install all Windows 7 updates.
    Problem 3
I don't have full access to the monitor menu. When I touch the menu button, I can only change the brightness, sharpness, and that is it. I can't do anything about expanding the screen, moving the screen left or right, etc.(If I did have these options, then problem #2 would be solved).
    Nothing has worked.
    What do I think...
I am thinking that it has something do with the fact that I am running the screen from the HDMI, although I don't really know why. It could also be the monitor. I could try to purchase the Mini Display Port adapter to see if that offers a better resolution, more freedom with my monitor, etc. This would fix problem 2 and 3. I did order a 24" Apple Cinema Display which will be here in a few days. If everything works with that, then I guess I wouldn't have a problem anymore, but I think it should still work with my existing monitor.
As for the first problem, I am at a loss. Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks for reading.

I completely agree with your assessment for Problem #1, but here we have it.
I will try re-installing and will also double check with the drivers for the monitor. Thanks for the advice. If all else fails, I will just use parallels.

  • How to use webmail address book on Mac Mini Server with Lion Server.

I have a Mac Mini Server with Lion Server installed; the webmail is setup and working but I can not get the address book to work.
I have followed an instruction from this website on how to activate the address book icon in webmail but can not add any addresses.  Is there something that needs to be activatied before it will work?

No, I didn't solve the problem. The monitor still goes to sleep with WIndows but not with my Mac Mini. About 8 months ago I basically wore out the power switch on my monitor so I bought a wireless power switch to shut it off at the outlet. The VX2835wm monitor itself is now starting to fail as well-- a couple of times it's gone through a weird sequence of flashing screen colors on power up and ended up in an overscan mode (that took me for ever to figure out how to fix). I have decided to replace my VX2835wm with a Dell u2412m once it fails for good partly because I really want to keep the 16:10 resolution (very hard to find these days) and partly because I want to see if a different make of monitor will go to sleep properly based upon my Mac Mini power down settings.

  • Bootcamp 5 on Mac Mini 2010

According to Apple's Boot Camp site, (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5634?viewlocale=en_US) my Mac Mini 2010 supports Boot Camp 4.  But I am running 10.8.3 now and this has installed Boot Camp 5 on my Mac Mini.  Will this cause any problems if I want to install WIndows 7?  Thanks.

One thing is the Boot Camp Assistant version and a different one is the Boot Camp drivers version your computer supports.
Mountain Lion has got Boot Camp Assistant 5, but computers that aren't compatible with Boot Camp 5 get Boot Camp 4 drivers without any problem. You can install Windows 7 without any problem, always that you download and install the Boot Camp 4 drivers in Windows. You can get these drivers in Boot Camp Assistant. Follow these steps to install Windows > http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_10.8.pdf

  • What is good greeting card software for my mac mini with Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.1?  I want a wide range of existing templates such as Hallmark and Printshop offer, but can't find for this version OS X.

For my Mac mini with Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.1, what is a good greeting card software download with lots of templates and graphics?

    Hi simon2010,
as far as I can see, I have resolved it...
Just so I didn't write over my functioning disk in the Mac mini, I took it out and put a spare one in.  (Would have saved me going back to the Apple store to get it re-imaged if it did fail.)
I created a Mountain Lion installer on an 8GB USB stick, and first installed 10.8.4 (the latest at the current time) on my MacBook Pro... it worked fine, so I knew the installer stick had no problems at all (that's one thing to rule out of the list of potential causes).
With my spare hard disk in the Mac mini, I then went to try to install 10.8.4 on it, with my 16GB non-Apple RAM in it.  It failed as usual in the way I expressed originally.
I then just swapped my 16GB RAM for the original Apple 4GB RAM (2x2GB sticks) which I put back in the machine, and I tried re-installing.  No problem whatsoever - it installed perfectly.
It's the RAM!  Even though my RAM works perfectly once installed, the Apple OS installer refuses to proceed if Apple RAM is not in.  I put my 16GB RAM back in after installing the OS and all is fine.
I'm quite surprised Apple has done this.
Have you changed the RAM?  Let me know if it's the same problem or you have some differences.
I assume it will install fine if I put the orignal HD back in, again if I have the original Apple RAM in of course.
PS.  Also to note, the point where it failed in the installer with my 16GB RAM in, with the original Apple RAM in it took an incredibly long time towards the end of the bar moving across the screen; it says "5 minutes remaining" for at least 15, maybe 20 minutes, but gets past it eventually, then does a reboot to continue its install.

  • Upgrade Mac Mini 2010 to SSD, have you tried this?

Hi all, and this is my first discussion thread.
I'm currently running my Mac Mini 2010 with a SATA Male to Female cable and ext. SATA power on a WD VelociRaptor 150GB.
The solution isn't really elegant i feel and it generates alot of heat from the drive and some extra noise when loading heavy applications eg. parallels desktop.
I've even up the ram to the max 8GB as well and everything seems zippy so far.
Earlier there are alot of talk about SSDs requiring TRIM on the operating system and as what we know Mac OS X Leopard
does not have integrated TRIM support.
So i'm basically looking at SSD candidates that will:
    - run the power provided by the Mac Mini's (5V) integrated PSU
    - don't require TRIM support to manage garbage collection on the hardware level.
So far, i've only 2 candidates:
    - Crucial RealSSD
    - Kingston V100+
Which one will you shell out for and why?
    Additional question:
    - If i remove the superdrive on my mac mini, can i get a external USB superdrive? is there such a thing at all?

theres no reason why it should not work, plug in the HDMI cable, select the Source input on LCD(HDMI 1/2), if still no picture on the Mini open System Pref>Display : Resolution> it should show 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p and other lower resolutions, just select 1080p and to your right select 60hz. Hope this helps.

  • Created three new users without Apple IDs and they can't log into either of my Macbook Pro or Mac Mini running Mountain Lion.

I have created three new users without Apple IDs and they can't log into either of my Macbook Pro or Mac Mini running Mountain Lion.  These accounts are for my kids and originally were setup with parental controls and time constraints.  Thinking this was the problem I removed the time constraints, removed the parental controls, deleted and re-added them, and made them standard users.  I have reinstalled, used disk utility to repair permissions, and made them admins.   Any help is appreciated.

Users don't need Apple ID's. That's not the issue. Have you tried repairing permissions their accounts?
    http://osxdaily.com/2011/11/15/repair-user-permissions-in-mac-os-x-lion/
Repairing User Permissions in OS X Lion
You’ll need to reboot to perform this, and then use the same resetpassword utility that is used to change passwords in Lion, but instead choosing a hidden option.
When you use the Disk Utility app and Repair Permissions — it doesn’t actually repair the permission settings on folders and files in your Home folder where your documents and personal applications reside.
In Lion, there is an additional Repair Permissions application utility hidden away. This tool is located inside boot Repair Utilities. Here’s how to access it.
Restart Lion and hold down the Command and R keys.    You will boot into the Repair Utilities screen. On top, in the Menu Bar click the Utilities item then select Terminal.
In the Terminal window, type resetpassword and hit Return.
The Password reset utility launches, but you’re not going to reset the password. Instead, click on the icon for your Mac’s hard drive at the top. From the drop-down below it, select the user account where you are having issues.
At the bottom of the window, you’ll see an area labeled ‘Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs’. Click the Reset button there.
The reset process takes a couple of minutes. When it’s done, quit the programs you’ve opened and restart your Mac. Notice that ‘Spotlight’ starts re-indexing immediately.

  • Is mac mini 2010 good enough for iphone app development?

I'm planning to get a Mac Mini 2010, with 4GB of ram instead of the default basic 2GB. I'm getting it to do iphone app development. Is this computer going to be sufficient? Are there any caveats I should be aware of?
    Thanks!

    Hi
I got exactly that setup for exactly that purpose... even the 4GB upgrade Even without the ram upgrade it should still be fine for iPhone app development. I've not run into any problems with mine.
I got my ram upgrade because I want to run Windows inside MacOS using virtualization software - that kinda thing requires lots of ram.
You might want to wait two days though before you buy. Apple has an event on Wednesday (October 20th) and it looks like there will be a lot of focus on Mac, possibly some hardware upgrades and a new version of MacOS.

  • 30-inch Apple Cinema Display on Mac Mini 2010

I recently went around to look for a 30-inch Apple Cinema Display. I found out that if I use it with the new Mac Mini 2010, the resolution is somewhat pixelized. From what I know the Mac Mini's Mini DisplayPort supports for up to 2560-by-1600 resolution.
Base on the 30-inch max resolution, its 2560 x 1600. Did I get this right?

    Did I get this right?
Yes, if you're using a dual-link DVI adaptor. If you're using a single-link one, the maximum resolution on a 30-inch display is 1280 by 800.
If you're using a dual-link DVI connection at the correct resolution, check the Zoom setting in the Universal Access and Keyboard & Mouse panes of System Preferences.
