Strange return from permissions repair

After having a problem with  Software Update acting very strange, (it would seem like it was frozen, but actually was just extremely slow and unresponsive until it did whatever I had just clicked on) I did a permissions repair. I then downloaded the update and did the repair one more time. Both times I got an extrememly long list of changes and both times it included this:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
The Remote Management part bothers me as I don't have anything set up for managing my computer other than from the keyboard. Can someone tell me what this is?
Thanks,
Rich

This not so much a problem but a question. When I did a routine permissions repair, I got the following message:

I have never seen a message that is headed, "Warning," and I don't know what it all means nor what to do about it if action is required.
Anyone know what this all means?
    Thanks!

Well, you are right. Using the link you provided, the warning lines went away. I wonder how you knew to use that update other than the other? It took just short of 10 hours to do that download - more actually, but I didn't count the number of times I had to restart the download due to losing carrier during the download.
Apple is killing me with these enormous downloads. I live in a rural area, too far away from the road to use cable, so no broadband. The population density isn't there for Verizon or other carriers to make DSL available. I could use a satellite service but it is just way too expensive both with the monthly subscription price and with the investment in hardware needed. 109 megs to make this problem go away. Just not right. I think Apple forgets that many people do not have a high speed connections.
    Anyway, thanks again.

  • 10.6.8 rainbow wheel - strange startup following perm repair

I've been getting the rainbow wheel quite often on Safari and other apps.  As if it stalls for a bit then resumes regualr functioning.  Upon restart I get either a very delayed white screen before seeing the grey apple or I get the grey apple with the grey progress bar below it.
Booted from Snow Leopard OS disk and performed the password utility and reset all user and root ACL's.  Perfomed disk utility's verify disk which came back okay. Performed permissions repair after finding unexpected ACL's and wrong permissions on private/var/root/library and users/shared.
Rebooted and noticed that "network" user was on the list of users and there was a lowecase  "m" right under "OSX"  at the top of the login window.

    more info:
it is the host that is somehow changing to "m"
During one restart, I got the blinking folder with a question mark.  Rebooted again, and was able to get into the system but only after a very long start up period.
What console log should I be looking at to detrimine what is going on here?

  • Computer Instantly Shuts Off Since Returning From Lenovo Repair

    Hi,
I have an unfortunate problem, and I hope I can get some help.
I have a G780 with Windows 8 64bit, an i5 Ivy Bridge 3210m Processor, an integrated Intel HD 4000 graphics unit, and a dedicated GForce GT 635m GPU.  The system is less than 6 months old.
A few weeks ago, my laptop stopped turning on at all, or recognizing batter or AC power. Lenovo customer support determined it was a hardware problem, and so I sent it in for repair; the Lenovo technician replaced the mainboard, which fixed the problem. When I got it back, the the laptop booted up no problem, and it appeared fine.
When, a few days later, I tried to open a video game, the laptop shut straight off (no blue screen or anything) after about 60 seconds, right as I was reaching the main menu. After this, the laptop was thrown into an automatic repair loop, where the computer would turn on for 20 seconds, then crash; then it would start into auto repair, and crash again; this would repeat over and over again, until it would magically recover into windows. This boot loop has only happened a few times now, but every single time I open a game, the laptop crashes. Furmark GPU stress test also crashes. Weirdest, the laptop crashes when I open GPU-Z to loop at my GForce's info, after about the same amount of time. 1080p video does not cause a crash.
I tried updating the mainboard BIOS, because the version that was on there was old, from 2012, and the new version said previous ones had problems with newer NVidia drivers; after that, I updated the GPU driver to the latest version. However, the laptop still crashes in the same way.
My friends and I are all unable to fix the problem. My best guess is that something is wrong with the hardware of the dedicated GPU, since it only seems to crash when I switch from the integrated card to the dedicated GPU.
I'm worried that, when I sent the laptop to repair to Lenovo for the mainboard to be changed, the GPU was somehow damaged or installed improperly while switching mainboards. I sincerely hope that this is not the case.
But I have never had this problem before getting my laptop back, and the problem it was sent in for was different and corrected.
PLEASE: What is causing the problem with my laptop?
Is there any software error that could be causing this problem? What can I do to fix possible software errors besides update mainboard BIOS and dedicated GPU drivers?
If it's not a software error, what can I do to identify a hardware error in the GPU? Is there any other part that could be causing this problem?
I need any possible advice. This problem is really unfortunately, and I definitely should be having problems after having my computer fixed.

What happens if you take one of the RAM sticks out?
Try running memtest86 and see whether there's an issue with your RAM.
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers,
    George

  • Windows says not genuine after laptop returned from warranty repair

I sent my laptop off for a power supply repair after it failed. It's now back and seems fine but it says windows is not genuine even after I run the online checker. Any thoughts? Back to toshiba (Again)?

    > Any thoughts?
In my opinion you have two options only:
-install recovery image using recovery disc if you have one
-if you dont have recovery disc order it by Toshiba
Bringing back to Toshiba will not help much I think. I dont think they have recovery discs for all Toshiba notebook models. I presume they have installed OS for testing purposes only.

  • Our MacbookPro began running very slow a few days ago. I ran disk repair, permissions repair, and restored the OS from the Apple server. Kernal_Task appears to be using excessive CPU.

I uninstalled all of the Intego products. I restarted the laptop, also ran disk repair and permissions repair again. Then allowed the machine to run with no apps active, just in case the OS was perfroming cleanup funtions. Results: No discernible improvement in performance. The kernal_task shows 500+% and the CPU graph shows 70%-80%.
There is one hardware issue: The magsafe battery port stopped charging the battery, so the laptop must be plugged in all the time.

Forget it - one should always browse the posts before posting yourself. I found it. Sorry.

Please search the discussions before posting. This question has been asked and answerd dozens of times now.
You can safely ignore these messages, or you can download and manually install the 10.5.1 update to get rid of most of them.

  • Snow Leopard vs Long list of permissions repairs from 10.5.8 update

    Hello Everyone,
My question is more of result of technical curiosity than anything else.
This is the first Mac that I have ever owned, therefore it must be said that I have never upgraded the Mac OS X operating system before.
It is well documented here in these forums that the latest update to Leopard (10.5.8) resulted in a rather long list of permissions repairs for many users, including myself. I have read through most of the posts regarding this issue and have even taken the advice which several of you have given to "reapply the combo update twice without doing a permissions repair"
Nevertheless, the list is still there, and according to most users, as well Apple, these can be ignored.
Having said that, I fully intend to upgrade to Snow Leopard when it is released on Friday...But, when I do, should I assume that since the upgrade essentially installs a new operating system, the permissions data base will show up without any permissions errors? Or is the only way to clear the permissions list, a "nuke and pave" (erase and install) which purportedly is not an option on the upgrade disc.
Most of you out there are smarter than I am and much more experienced with the process so any expert advice you may have would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    joe

In all the articles you've read through, it doesn't seem you quite understand the issue.
When they put out 10.5.8, Apple replaced a lot of files with links to the originals. The repair database doesn't know that they are supposed to be links. So, permission repair reports them as different than what it expects. There is nothing wrong. Stop repairing permissions for no reason and they won't bother you.
There is nothing you can do to cause them to go away. When Apple puts out another update, they will hopefully update the database so that it recognizes those links and doesn't report them. However, I expect at some time in the future, stuff will change and the permission database will not get updated, and you will see similar notifications.

  • Permissions Repaired?

I have a strange situation when trying to send pics from iPhoto through Mac Mail.  Sometimes a new email message is generated perfectly with my imbedded pic and sometimes it opens a blank email where a photo should be but is not. When I run Repair Disc Permissions I usually get the following:
    Repairing permissions for “Macintosh HD”
User differs on “.DS_Store”; should be 0; user is 502.
    Permissions differ on “.DS_Store”; should be -rw-rw-r-- ; they are -rw-r--r-- .
    Repaired “.DS_Store”
Group differs on “Library/Preferences/com.apple.alf.plist”; should be 80; group is 0.
    Repaired “Library/Preferences/com.apple.alf.plist”
    Permissions repair complete
After this repair, my pictures are imbedded in the email they way I expected them to be. Does anyone know why this particular problem returns and how I am able to 'cure' the problem?
    Thanks in advance.

Intermittent things like that are tough to track down.
Just to see if it is a red herring, the next time you successfully attach a picture, run repair permissions and see if it shows up. If it is there when you had succes, it likely isn't the cause and we're just chasing our tail.
If that file is showing up inside the iPhoto Library, it could be the problem.
There is a glitch where you can't see the default user pictures in the dialog when you change yours. Deleting the .DS_Store file in the /Library/User Pictures folder fixes it.
Do you ever go browsing around in the iPhoto Library folder structure?

  • Permissions repair weirdness

Hi! I am trying to figure out a bunch of problems happening on my MacPro 2008, most likely related to software. One thing at a time!
I usually regularly repair permissions on Snow Leopard's main drive, and to do that I boot from the external HD that has all the utilities on. Some strange things happened this morning, after a screen of death, and a successful repair of some errors with Disk Utility. Now when I try permissions repair, it waits and waits and nothing happens.
When I use Drive Genius, the permissions repair option is grayed out. What does this all mean? Is this normal? I ALWAYS see permissions being repaired when I ask for it.  This is the first time I don't. I am trying to understand. Any wisdom appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Rad

First thing, Permissions repair is not a regular maintenance item. It should only be done in the usually rare case that you are having a problem with an Apple installed item.
If you do repair Permissions, you should be doing this directly from the normal startup volume, not an external. You don't need any special utility for this, just Disk Utility.
See if repairing from the startup volume makes a difference. If not, then check to see your receipts are still present in /var/db/receipts. You can use Go to Folder and just enter that. This is where Permissions knows what to check.

  • System time stuck after returning from deep sleep

    Hi,
When I return from deep sleep, my system time is set to when I entered deep sleep. Only after opening Date & Time system preferences, the time is corrected.
    Any help is highly appreciated.
    Markus

Other basic and routine maintenance is often helpful
even if the results of preventative tasks go unseen.
The use of Disk Utility's function to 'repair disk permission'
and also the ability to start the computer into SafeBoot
mode, where it is forced to check and repair system bits,
(hold shift key on startup, wait, login; at desktop, you can
also choose to run Disk Utility per above, by using GO in
    the Finder menubar, and open Utilities folder> disk utility;
when done repairing disk permissions, quit; then restart)
is one of the harmless simpler single or dual acts one can do.
There are third party utility like interface tools that allow
the user to run maintenance tasks through the GUI of
that tool and not have to force them from a Single User
mode of access; these are often freeware, such as the
well known OnyX by Titanium Software. In my Macs,
once a month or more (if I feel motivated) I run OnyX's
'automation' tab selection, and check-box all of them.
And have OnyX's preferences set to restart after its done.
Some of the other options can be helpful, when you discover
their purpose and find when they can have practical worth.
In any event, some kinds of issues can be headed off; and
a good idea is to invest in some backup strategy which
gives you a few options; although I am lazy about it now, I
have made backup full bootable clones of my computers.
This is done to an external drive which supports same.
Learning ahead of a drastic need, how to use some of
the better free-running downloadable cloneware, is good.
And the idea is you can actually do most of the minor tech
work and repairs to a system (and have boot clones) at
home; especially handy when you live 100+ miles on a
road to nowhere. As some will argue, the living planet is
on a dead-end road, it is good to get out and witness life.
Being where there are no tech support persons, I have
learned to do more than I need to; and when not messed
with, tend to enjoy learning more than I'd actually need to.
In any event, hopefully things go well with these matters...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Slow Returning from sleep...

I have an Ibook w/ Mac OS X 10.4.10. I have my computer set so that when it returns from sleep the user must enter the password to continue. Recently when i first open up the labtop it takes about a minute for me even to be able to type the password in. Once I am able to type i can hit and enter and now more waiting is required. I thought maybe it was because i was putting it to sleep w/ too many programs open but this was not the case. My brother has a twin to mine and he said he has never had anything of the sort happen with his. Any suggestions???

Sounds like a possible conflict when trying to redraw the screen.
main areas to look at are:
    - cache
    - font conflicts
    - permissions
Go to disk utility in the affected user and repair disk permissions.
Open font book and select all fonts
Look in the second column and check for any black dots to the right of any of the font names.
If there are some the select the entire second column and go to the edit menu and resolve duplicates.
Then choose validate fonts from the file menu with all fonts selected in the second column.
Remove any fonts that do not have a circle with a checkmark.
Remove the user and root cache cache folders from the user Library and the root Library.
    Restart the computer.
    Test.
This can also be an issue of connecting to a network. If a network connection times out then when redrawing the screen the system may have to reconnect and log in. Also devices/volumes may need to establish communications or mount.
    Test in a new user.
This can determine if you have a system wide issue or a user specific one.

  • IMac Fan & Permissions Repair Questions

As with other posters, I am having a similar issue regarding racing fans ever since upgrading to Leopard. Resetting the SMU had no effect, as did several restarts. I ran Activity Monitor and my CPU is running nearly 100% (User). There is a root application named "mdworker" that seems to be monopolizing most of the cpu time, anywhere from 30% to over 50%. What is even stranger, there is an identical process id "mdworker" that belongs to "nobody." I have tried to force quit both but they always reappear.
It should be noted that I performed an Archive and Install to address yet another issue regarding Permission Repairs.
I ran a repair and was greeted by at least a dozed warnings that began with the following string: "Warning: SUID,,,,"
This is what prompted me to perform the Archive & Install.
After performing yet another Permissions repair, same result.
    Are these two symptoms related?
    Thanks,
    - iMac G5
    - 2G Ram
    - New (within a year) mother board & power supply

The SUID warnings are harmless, hopefully they'll disappear in the next update. They have nothing to do with your fan activity.
The processes that are taking up so much CPU are launched when there's new file activity, mdworker is metadata worker and it's part of Spotlight.

  • Permissions repair - completes immediately

when I repair permissions with Disk Utility, the process completes in the blink of an eye and does not list anything as having been repaired. This began after I installed iTunes 10.0 and the latest security update. I have tried to repair permissions a few times since then and the same thing happens.
Have all my permissions received permission?
I am not experiencing any problems opening or finding anything.

I'm not sure what might have caused this. You should try to see if it's system wide or just your user. Create a new admin account and test for this behavior there.
As a troubleshooting procedure, you could try running Applejack which is a very useful little program for troubleshooting and repairing. It runs from Single User Mode. Hold CMD-S at the startup chime. (Also, be sure to read the Read Me.) It's very easy to use. You just follow the on screen prompts. First, just type in applejack and press return. To begin with, I'd only run it only for steps 3 and 4, which will do a relatively light cache cleaning and check for corrupted Preference files. Doing it this way, you'll also be able to run those steps for your user, not just the system. If that doesn't help, run it for deeper cache cleaning by typing in applejack AUTO and let it proceed through a full sequence of tasks (which includes Disk and Permissions Repair.) Note: that if you do a deeper cache cleaning, you can expect the system to run a bit slower until those caches are rebuilt and it may take several restarts after running it for the benefits to be realized.

And here's an article which explains it.
