Strange SaveAs dialog in Leopard Mail 3.6

This is the craziest thing, I've never seen this before.
Normally when I save a message or attachment in Mail, the Save As dialog rolls down and when I look at it in list view, I see two columns headings, Name and Date Modified.
Starting this morning, when I try to save a message or an attachment, the column headings BOTH say Date Modified. What's going on? How can I fix this?
Icon view and column view seem to be the same... but I like using list view. Or at least I did, when it worked. This seems to only happen in Mail -- my Finder is unchanged and the Save As dialog is unchanged in every other program I've checked (CS4, word.. I even dusted off iCal).
Anyone?

Yes, I've looked all through the user forums and cannot find any similar complaint anywhere -- as far as I can tell, this has never happened before!!
I've tried restarting OSX, rebuilding the mailbox. Can someone give me some other basic troubleshooting that might have any effect on the SaveAs dialog?

  • Servers in Open/Save dialogs

Apologies if this has been asked/answered before... I noticed an issue in the open/save dialogs in Leopard.
Say I want to attach a file in Mail that's sitting on a server or another computer. In Tiger, I would navigate to the server within the dialog, double click on it, then enter the user/pass and connect to the share I'm looking for.
In Leopard, it seems I can no longer browse and connect to a server from within the open/save dialogs. Unless I'm already connected, I can only see the public shares without the option to "Connect As..." another user. So now I have to switch over to the Finder, navigate to the server, connect to it with the proper credentials, then get back over to Mail, navigate back to the share and choose my file.
Is this just a bug I'm noticing or is this the way it works in Leopard? I'd really like to be able to not have to switch to/from the Finder just to mount network shares to open from or save files to in another app.

See if macjack's solution works for you:

  • Open and Save dialog boxes are sorted reverse alpahbetically by default

I have a user that experiences the same frustrating experience every time she restarts Apple Mail. All of her open and save dialog boxes in Mail are sorted from Z to A. She can click the name field to change the sort, but it will return to Z-A if she quits and reopens the program. The Finder is set (and stays) at A-Z. Other applications do not exhibit this problem. I am loathe to reset the preferences since that means having to set up accounts again. Restarting the computer and removing user caches made no difference. Any suggestions?  This is an iMac Mid 2008 running Mac OS X 10.6.8.

I solved my own question through trial and error.
Just select "None" on the dropdown selector (see screen capture, above) and the Open/Save dialog will revert to the older version.

  • Extremely strange open/save dialog behavior

This is a complex thing to describe, but here goes:
Under 10.4.x, in certain applications' open/save dialogs, files and folders for an Iomega FireWire Drive are often simply missing. For example: in the Users folder, I have two folders:
    "Scott" and "shared"
In "Scott" I have the usual folders: Desktop, Documents, Library, Movies, Music, Pictures, Public, and Sites.
If, in those certain applications' dialogs, I navigate to the Users folder, I only see "Scott". If I then navigate to "Scott", the only folder visible is Documents.
All of the folders are perfectly visble in Finder.
As best I can tell, this problem does not occur with the internal drive, or with a LaCie USB drive.
But it's not so simple. In an open/save dialog,
    1) if I am in List view and navigate to the FireWire drive, switching to column view does not change anything.
    2) So long as I'm in the root directory, or viewing another drive, if I switch to Column view, I can navigate down to Users and all of the formerly missing directories are visible. This works even if I go to the problem diectories first in List (with the missing contents), go back up to root, switch to Column, then go back down.
    3) if I'm viewing the directories in Column view (i.e., they're all there), I can switch to List, and they're still there. But if I change directories AT ALL, they're gone again when I try to return.
In other words, I have to be in Column view in order to see the directories, and I must be in Column view BEFORE navigating to those directories. I can then switch to List, but the directories malfunction if I change, moving either up or down in the path.
Last bit of strangeness, and even more difficult to describe: If in List view and looking at the FireWire drive, I go back to my Computer directory (using Command-up arrow, for example), my FireWire drive is shown six times! That is:
    Iomega FW
    Iomega FW 1
    Iomega FW 2
    Iomega FW 3
    Iomega FW 4
    Iomega FW 5
The first five have regular folder icons, while the last has what looks like a network icon, with the little alias arrow on it. If I click on a different drive and THEN go back to the Computer directory, it's fine again.
    Want weirder? Fine.
    1) I click on the FireWire drive icon in the sidebar, then on my computer icon (Powermac G5). The listing INSTANTLY switches to my internal drive (which is highlighted in the sidebar).
    2) if any other drive is highlighted, or I was switched to the internal drive as above, I can then click on the computer icon without any trouble.
Lastly: as I said, this problem only occurs in certain applications. Here are some tests as to which do, and which do not, have the problem:
Problem does not occur: Safari, Console, TextEdit, QuickTime Player, Preview
Problem occurs: Word, DVD Player, iTunes, Firefox, FileBuddy
Last bit: I tried unmounting the drive and switching it to a USB connection, but this changed nothing.
Disk Utility, TechTool Pro 4, and DiskWarrior find no problems with the drive.
Apologies if this sounds convoluted, but it is! Any thoughts?

I am going to make some (perhaps twisted) logical leaps...
In the days of SCSI, duplicate SCSI addresses would cause that behavior. The first twisted logic question is:
Is this a factory FW device, or did you install the Iomega drive in a FW enclosure you purchased yourself, and, if the latter, what is the jumper setting on the Iomega device proper?
I know there are sometimes issues with drive indexing/spotlight with certain files/folders. That problem causes some files to duplicate themselves multiple times.
Does Iomega say anything about problems indexing their device? (with the second twisted logical leap of the directory cache is being duplicated)

  • Snow Leopard sidebar width in open/save dialog boxes

I think I found the answer to the infuriating non adjustable sidebar width in the open/save dialog box.
It requires finding the plist of every program you want to change (I know... annoying)
Close the application if open. Open the plist in Property List Editor (which is the default anyway so just double click) and delete any line which begins NSNavPanelExpanded...
Reopen the application and the sidebar now mirrors the settings in Finder (where the sidebar stays adjusted if you alt+click drag it).
I haven't restarted yet so don't know if it will stick but I don't see why it shouldn't, and I don't know if it will reflect further finder changes to the sidebar width.

In the case of Photoshop it looks like NSNavBrowserPreferedColumnContentWidth also needs to be deleted, or a new value entered.
So it might be different for different programs

  • Snow Leopard Mail - Bouncing Icon Rule Works Strangely

With most applications, when the icon bounces, the bouncing is stopped once the function it was notifying you about has been taken care of. This is not the case with Snow Leopard Mail. When a Rule has been created to 'Bounce Icon in Dock', the icon keeps bouncing, even after the message it was notifying you about has been selected and read. The user must then go back to the icon and click it to stop it from bouncing. It would be much more convenient and intuitive if the icon stopped bouncing after the messages have been read. Does anyone no of a way to configure Mail to do this?

    Look at that:

  • SMTP not working properly in Leopard mail

    Hello all,
I have upgraded to Leopard on all of my machines (yeah, I'm that kind of fanboy <grin>) and my corporate email (Exchange 2003) is working just fine over IMAP/SMTP on all of my machines except....
On my Mac Pro 8-core box, it is failing to successfully send messages over SMTP that have attachments.
I have deleted and recreated my email accounts on this machine and compared them (using the handy dandy new screen sharing tool in Leopard!) item for item to those on my functioning perfectly MacBook Pro.
On the exact same network I can send messages just fine on the MacBook Pro but cannot send messages with attachments on the Mac Pro. I can send messages on the Mac Pro that don't have attachments until they get over a certain size (not sure exactly where that is yet). This made me think it might be an MTU problem on my Ethernet card. I fiddled with that to no avail. I also saw someone on a board in .AU suggesting that I turn of IPV6 on the interface. That didn't work either.
In the "Mail Activity" pane in the UI (which I like by the way) it gets about halfway through the upload of the new message with an attachment and then it slows way down (to zero) and periodically twitches around like it is sending something but always drops back to zero at about the halfway point. Finally it gives up and suggests that I use a different SMTP server.
Dropping and recreating the .Mac account on this machine fixed SMTP to that server but the same "fix" didn't work for my IMAP account.
Since I can send short messages, I won't buy any suggestions that I have my authentication wrong or that there is a problem with the mail server (why does it work fine on my MacBook Pro) or that something might be screwy with my LAN (the MacBook Pro works fine).
To me, this screams some sort of bug or corrupted file from the Leopard upgrade.
Oh, one other thing I tried was creating a new user account and setting up Mail from scratch over there. No joy - same issue.
One final thing, nothing interesting happening in Console either.
Any help would be appreciated before I "scorched earth reinstall" this beast and start rebuilding my life.
    Thanks in advance,
    Bryan

    Bryan,
I am on the same boat. Here is my case. Mail 3.0 attempts to request TCP port 465 (why not 25) to my ISP's SMTP server. A dialog box from Mail 3.0 indicates that I should consider to use other SMTP server. I sent some via ".mac.com" which is a trial service.
    The message says;
The server “mail.222.rrrr.ne.jp” refused to allow a connection on port 465.
Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click.
Try Later to leave the message in your Outbox until it can be delivered...
But this is very strange if the architecture do not use TCP/25 port.

  • Intel Imac (snow leopard) Mail/Icloud not accepting Password

I am having a very strange problem since yesterday when mail on my Imac running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 started complaining about wrong password.
I reset the account on Mail, deleted the account, set the account back up, reset the password various times but to no avail.
I have mail running also on my macbook running Lion and on my iphone 4 running Ios 5.0.1 and they all work with no problem and they have accepted the new password.
I have tried installing Thhunderbird and tried to configure it on the Imac for use with icloud account but same issue was presented.
I tried setting up the icloud email on my windows 7 pc and had the same issue.
I have also installed the Icloud app for snow leopard and that as well is giving the same error message.
I have tried all the suggestions found in this support forum but none of them have produced positive results.
Can anyone point me in the right direction as to what I could do to have mail working again??
    Cheers
    Mirco

I reset the account on Mail, deleted the account, set the account back up, reset the password various times but to no avail.
Launch Keychain Accesss located in /Applications/Utilities
    Select Passwords on the left.
Locate your mail keychain. You can use the search field top right corner of the window.
Then right or control click the keychain then click Delete.
Now open Mail. From the menu bar click Mail > Preferences then select the Accounts tab then the Account Information tab.
Type in the correct password. You should be prompted to save that information to a new keychain.

  • Leopard mail won't remember passwords

For some strange reason Leopard mail doesn't seem to want to save any of our passwords to any of our accounts. We've gone into +mail preferences+ and saved them there, but as soon as we close down mail it 'forgets' them again. We've also repaired the keychain, but the same thing happens.
Anyone know of how to fix a password memory problem to get the passwords to 'stick' in mail?

    {quote:title=henrikloenn wrote:}If I had an aquarium my mini would be in it.{quote}
LOL Thanks for the chuckle, we needed it
    {quote}I've been at this for two weeks now and my keychains are unresponsive even after reparing permissions, starting over with a clean keychain and even a new user.{quote}
Yep, we've done the same with no results. Our problem has actually become WORSE over time - now it even asks us to put in the main keychain password, then it asks for each individual e-mail account password
    {quote}It's crazy that they've managed to screw this up so badly.{quote}
I know. What is most upsetting to us is that Mail was not broken. For as long as we've used Tiger it has worked flawlessly. Then Leopard comes out and adds a few cosmetic type features to Mail and the whole ball of wax becomes a mess. Very disappointing to say the least.

  • Open/Save Dialog, 9 min. Beachball Freeze

I am running OS 10.10.2 on a March 2009 iMac with 8GB RAM and 1TB HD.
PROBLEM: While working in Illustrator 18 (CC 2014), if I choose File > Open, the Open dialog appears but I get the spinning beachball for 9 minutes before file contents appear. I don't have the same problem in Photoshop or any other app.  But after Googling, I see that a number of people have posted similar Console Log messages (see below) when using in a variety of apps in Yosemite, even in Apple's own Mail app.  This tells me the root problem may not be specific to Illustrator, even though it only affects Illustrator in my case currently.
    WHAT I TRIED:
    1) Moved all Adobe Illustrator related PLISTS and preference files and folders to the Desktop and then launched Illustrator.  I saw Illustrator rebuild new prefs files and all settings reverted back to stock.  This proves my moving of the prefs to the Desktop was successful to cause a rebuild of new prefs and PLISTS. Even so, the BeachBall freeze appeared when I did a File > Open.
    2) Rebooted with SHIFT held down (Safe Mode).  But the beachball problem remains.
    3) Disconnected all USB devices except keyboard/mouse, and turned off WiFi and BlueTooth, and even yanked my Ethernet cable.  I also turned off Time Machine and Default Folder.  But the problem remains, even through a reboot.
    4) I removed DropBox and GoogleDrive and I closed all apps other than Illustrator, but to no avail.
    5) Tried a Guest User, but that doesn't work with Adobe Apps.  Ditto for a Standard user.  You get an error dialog when you try to launch Adobe apps with that kind of user.  So I then created an Admin user.  Illustrator's Open dialog box displays files perfectly, as normal!  A NEW ADMIN USER FIXES THE PROBLEM!
So a new Admin user fixes the beachball problem in the Open dialog, but for my normal Admin user there's the 9 min. beachball problem.  And yet, SAFE MODE doesn't fix the problem while in my normal User.  And neither does deleting Illustrator prefs.  So it's clear there's still something lurking in my primary user account that is absent in the new Admin user account.  But what?  And how can I find it?  (Migrating everything to a new User account is no easy task.)

I get the exact same set of messages that you see above every time I try to reproduce the problem, simply by doing a File > Open in Illustrator.
I assume AFP is Apple File Protocol?  But what "server" is it trying so desperately in vain to "Get"?  And why is a DNS resolver being used?
Anyway, as you can see from the Console log above, the beachball in the Open/Save dialog in Illustrator goes away after 534 seconds (about 9 min.).  But it reappears each time I try to go to a new folder on my HD within that Open dialog.  Each time takes exactly 534 seconds each time for the stupid beachball to go away when changing folders in the Open dialog.
This beachball freeze (for 9 min.) in Illustrator's Open dialog occurred every once and a while over the last several weeks, but now it consistently happens.  And no, I've not installed any new software on my iMac other than Yosemite updates.
Once again, I would prefer to fix the root problem in my primary user account rather than migrate to a New User even though I now know a new Admin user account resolves the problem.
    Please help.

With regard to my cry for help...
    Pretty please?
Here are links to other apps which show the same Console Log messages that I am seeing, proving this is not an issue exclusive to a single app:
    Vmware & OS 10.10.2
    Pertaining to networked HD's
    Shared Mac on a Network
Prevents Time Capsule access and kills Time Machine too
OS 10.10 & Time Capsule woes
    OS 10.9.2 & NAS woes
    Yosemite & Time Capsule woes
    iPhoto woes after Migration
    More Time Capsule woes
Time Machine woes from Germany (translated)
    mDNSResponder stuck in restart loop
If you read through all the above like I did, you're probably very tired by now.  But if you had the same problem as I do, you would do anything to resolve it, hence my post here.  So again, I plead for your kind help and attention to this problem!
The above links do tell me one thing, that a "network error" is at the heart of the Console log messages and my problem.  And that remains true even when I've disconnected from the network entirely, leading me to believe that this is some sort of CACHING BUG.  For truly, there is a Time Capsule at my office, and I do use Time Machine (although not saving to the TC but instead to an external FW HD).  So...  It is my guess that Yosemite has cached some network data it doesn't like and tries to access that data from a cache when the Open Dialog appears in Illustrator.  But WHY ILLUSTRATOR in my case?  It makes no sense to me at all.  I would think it should consistently occur in the Open dialogs of all apps, but it's only in Illustrator.
I did have problems with my Time Machine backups after putting Yosemite on my iMac, but those issues were resolved in the 10.10.2 update.
In any case, if indeed it is a CACHING BUG, how then would I clear that stupid, evil cache?
Again, I would appreciate your kind thoughts and advice.
    Thank you!

  • Open and Save Dialogs Slow to Open and Populate

In all of my apps, the Open and Save dialogs have become very slow to open and populate since installing Snow Leopard, when the machine is connected to a Windows server. Disconnecting from the server solves the problem; reconnecting causes it to reappear.
This only happens on some of my machines, and not others
Any thoughts on what this could be. The delay is significant (about 10 seconds in all).

    Roy,
I've got the same problem. I've been charting the slowness, i.e. the time until the app responds and opens the save dialog box, and most apps hover around 2 minutes of waiting.
My home network consists of a belkin n+ router (running only with the N radio, and WPA2 security), one ethernet-connected powerbook with a USB-connected hard disk (640GB+), and my MBP connecting by wireless. The USB HD is used as a Time Machine backup disk, and the backups are extremely slow, on the order of 2 GB's per hour at most.
That said, I called up Apple Tech Support and they had me flash my PRAM, restart the machine, and Reset Safari (since that was the app I called about). These efforts, unfortunately, did not fix the issue.
I will be passing on the fact that Tech Support's efforts did not solve the problem--maybe they'll get back to me on the issue. If so, I'll post it here.

  • Open/Save Dialog does not show new files?

Say you are working on a logic file in a folder and you have
a few audio and movie files in that folder, and you launch
Logic and via the open/save dialog window you add a few
files to your song and in that dialog window you can see
all the files in that folder.
Then, in the Finder you add a few more files and movies to
that folder and again use the open/save dialog window to
add more files BUT the new files you added since launching
logic are NOT SHOWN in the dialog window ! ?
    What's the deal with that?
Every other app can show files added since the launch of the
    application, why not Logic?
    PowerBook G4 1GHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    project manager
    um, yeah.
Should not need the project manager simply to see new files added to a directory in a Open/Save dialog window since last opening the app.
I did a scan, a extended scan, opened all the little turn down arrows of the
full path to the directory I knew there to be the new files and yes, Logic
shows them there in the "Project manager".
BUT Logic still does not show the files in the Open/Save dialog windows.
This is strange because even simple app like TextEdit can show
new files in it's Open/Save dialog function windows without the need of
    a project manager.
I have to quit and re-launch each time to see any new files?

  • Open and Save Dialog Box Font Size

Greetings. Does anyone know how to change the font and icon sizes in Open and Save Dialog boxes in OSX 10.8? Back in Snow Leopard days, the parameters were stored in the users .GlobalPreferences.plist. But they do not appear to be there - or at least I don't recognize them in OSX 10.8. I recently started using a 27 inch Cinema Display, and the fonts are a bit small for me.
I appreciate any help anyone can offer.

Good question!  Do submit feedback to Apple.  Maybe if enough of us complain about this fundamental issue, they'll finally listen!

I am now running Lion.  I cannot remember if I had this problem under Snow Leopard, but I certainly have it now.  Whenever I bring up the Open/Save dialog within some apps (for example, Illustrator CS5.0), no matter how large I've made that dialog overall, the sidebar width is always too narrow such that all the names inside the sidebar aren't perfectly visible horizontally.  Yes, I can make the sidebar wider by hand for a single session.  But if I close the dialog and open it again, the sidebar becomes narrow again.
How can I define a minimum width for the Open/Save dialog sidebar, that all apps will obey perpetually?

Perhaps, but in my many years of online forum participation, I've found that people are lazy (myself included at times). And unless we exert ourselves, we often don't post something for the benefit of others, even though we may have the answer.  As such, a somewhat provocative follow-up post, while having the potential to upset some, is usually sufficient to encourage at least one person to stand up and post a potential solution.  It got you to post a response (even though it was not the answer I sought), which I appreciate.  Hopefully, someone with the answer will be able to post back here.  I am a believer of "where there's a will there's a way," so no doubt someone out there far more clever than I has discovered a fix for it.
I therefore look forward to hearing the thoughts of others on this issue.

  • Multiple desktops etc in Open/Save dialogs

I have not found that this causes an actual problem (so far) but it is strange and anoying.
Recently, when doing a "save as" I found to my surprise that I had 2 "desktop" icons in the dialog window. As the days have gone by, this has grown to 16. Also 16 copies of all the icons from the side-bar. This is in both open and save dialog windows.
Recently I installed Modul8 and also I have used Vue 5 (which has crashed and refused to open since) but I cant see that this multiple copies in open/save dialog-windows is connected to this.
I have run Onyx, but it did not fix the problem.
    Any ideas?

See if macjack's solution works for you:
