Strange scratching noise

Hey,
Since yesterday, I can hear from my recent Macbook Air some strange noises that sound from the left part of the Macbook. I have to agree that those noises are very low, and can only hear them when there is not much background noise. However, those noises weren't there before, and I don't know if I should or not worry about this. This is a Macbook Air 13" Early 2014. It is hard to describe, but it is like a soft scratching noise.
The computer is working perfectly fine and it has not changed in any way (only that stupid noise that keeps me reminding me )
Should I worry about this? Is it worth to go to the Apple Store so they check it? Has someone else experienced something like this?
Thank you

For your peace of mind and since it is so new, I think taking it to Apple for them to check it out is good idea. My guess is that it sounds like a fan problem.

  • Qosmio G30-126 - Strange scratching noise

    Hi!
I have a Qosmio G30-126 and OS Vista Ultimate. about a month ago my laptop was taken to service because it wouldn't turn on, but since last week, when I started it up there was a prolonged scratching noise on the startup, and since then whenever Im listening to music or if the laptop's on standby, there are some very weird scratching sounds coming out from the speakers. Short sounds that keep being repeated. Sometimes they stop after a few times, and other times, like last night, I had to restart.
I tried updating all available drives, but everything seemed up-to-date. I also googled the issue, but none of what I found was relative.
Can someone give me a clue as to what the issue might be? Is there something I haven't thought of that needs to be done?
    Thanks a lot in advance!

That might be an option...how can i see if it is the fan though? Is there a way to do it on my own?
Is it possible that these sound issues might be because of overusage? I don't keep my laptop on 24 hrs a day, but some days it's on till the evening. But only after the service did this whole thing occur..

  • Streamed videos that cause crashes preceded by strange 'scratching' noise

I sometimes hear an odd scratching sound on my MacBook while watching a streamed video on the Internet. This inevitably signals a crash about to happen -- which then occurs so immediately that I rarely have time to abort the video before it does.
I am wondering what exactly is going on with that scratching sound.
Is it just something akin to 'static' or 'feedback' from a poorly-produced video? Even if it is, why would that cause (or signal) a crash?
Could anything in the video (including any rogue elements put into the video stream by a hacker, etc.) be doing any harm to the MacBook hard drive or other hardware?
I'm pretty sure I've had this happen both in Safari and Firefox, so I don't think it's browser-related.
    Thanks.

Hi, without a link to one that does that, it's impossible to tell much... might be trying to do some sound it can't.
What format are these viudeos... wmv, Flash, etc.?
I'm not sure about the format. I guess I could keep an eye out for 'the next time' and note the URL.
I'm not really concerned about the crashes, just the scratching sound. I thought someone here might know +*whether streamed content can do anything harmful to the hardware of the computer it's being viewed on*+. That's my main concern.
BTW, this happens only in the circumstances I've descrived -- i.e., with those videos that produce that scratching sound and then cause my computer to crash. It's not a sound I ever hear otherwise.
    Thanks for your reply.

  • Hard drive scratching noises?

I've had my mac book for about 7 months now and i haven't had any problems until now. about a week ago my macbook began to make strange scratching noises whenever i did anything that required a lot of processing power like editing a large photoshop file, it would then freeze and i would have to restart my macbook. the scratching sounds seem to be coming from the hard-drive. now its getting really bad, it even freezes when i try to watch a long video on youtube and the only way to stop it is to turn my macbook off and on again. does anyone have any suggestions, its still under warranty so i could take it back to the shop but i just wanted to make sure there was nothing i could do to fix it.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks

Those kind of sounds are normal during heavy use. But if it continues to make the sound at all times then your hard drive might become a dud. You should backup your drive/data and try to Repair Permissions via Disk Utility.
If you have never used Disk Utility before here's some useful info:

  • MacBook Pro w/RD: Strange whining noise!!!

My Mac recently got serviced at an Apple Store - and there seems to be a problem. When I power it on, and while I am using it, there seems to be a strange whining noise coming from the upper-right hand side (when looking down at the keyboard). Near the Power Button! It's been drifting in and out of a local Authorized Repair Place, and the problem still is not evident.
It wasn't occurring before I brought it to the Genius Bar. I don't have a pentalobular screwdriver. They had gone into the machine and reset the EFI password at the Genius Bar. All help appreciated! Thanks!
I have a desperate project that needs to be completed before the 25th. I need this back (my machine) before January 22nd, 2013. Please keep that in mind when suggesting repair options.

Isit just when it starts up ? What about when entering a disc into the drive, do you get a almost crunching sound? If so, most definitely the optical drive. Mine is the same, nothing to worry about.. I haven't had any problems so far, sometimes when burning a disc I get errors, but nothing major.

  • Skips & Scratch Noises during playback ...

I am all of a sudden getting skips & scratch noises during playback on certain albums during playback on Itunes and it transferred over to my ipod ... What could be causing this and how can I get rid of it.  ( No it is not the CD it was burned from cause it sounds perfect playing on other devices)
thanks for any ideas or tips :-)

I have observed this with my 4th gen Nano. The sound is pristine through the headphone jack, but when connected via some (older) dock devices there are little bursts of static every few moments.
I have tried this with a Bose Sounddock and a Tivoli iSongbook. Same thing. The little static bursts are NOT repeatable (random), and do NOT appear in headphones. Most people would probably never notice this noise, especially if they play only rock music. Music with less percussive sound reveals the problem more easily.
The very same files played through the dock devices on my old 3rd Gen iPod sound perfect.
I was getting ready to ask Apple to exchange my Nano for another to see if that has any effect. Other than this issue, I love it and it works great.

  • Satellite L550: some CDs does not play correctly - scratching noise

I have a Satellite L550 and I was happy with it so far, as long as I didn't use CD listening.
Now I found out, that some CDs will not be played correctly (scratching noise), but some are fine.
However, when I take the "scratching" ones into a standard CD-player, it works fine there too.
    What can I do?

    Hi
Scratching noice??? Did you try different software?
Winamp or VLC player are great, small applications.
What sound card do you have? Is it Realtek? If yes, then you should try sound driver update.
Furthermore Realtek sound chip support the Realtek HD audio Manager which can be found in control panel. There you can change the sound properties
But maybe it a compatibility issue between the disk and CD/DVD drive this ca be possible too

That model has a known fault in that Nvidea sold Apple and other computer manufacturers bad GeForce 8600M GT video chipsets that failed eventually. Apple had a program that repaired this at no cost to the owner but it expired almost two years ago.
If this is what happened to yours, and the symptoms suggest so, the only proper fix is a new logic board and I amd pretty sure Apple no longer has parts. When my Late 2007 MBP (same faulty chipset) failed, Apple told me there were no more parts and they could not even do the fixed-rate "depot repair" on mine even though I was willing to pay the ~US$300 for the repair.
The early 2008 MBP is on the vintage and obsolete list:
Vintage and obsolete products - Apple Support
The fact that yours is shown as "vintage" means Apple will not work on it but an independent service provider MAY be able to get the parts from Apple. However, as so may new logic boards were required to satisfy the repair program, from a practical standpoint boards for these are hard to find.

  • Strange clicking noise

Hello all. I hope someone can help me with this question.
I have a 30g ipod that is less than a year old. I believe I purchased it last October. It has started to make a strange clicking noise when I play music.
I tend to use it alot since I can listen to music at work. I would say that it runs for about 9 hours a day. Most of the time when it is in use, it is hooked up directly to the speakers and the battery charger.
Has anyone else had this happen? Does anyone know what the problem is?
    Thanks for your help.

      Windows XP

    Hi Dakota!
First, have you tried resetting your iPod? To reset an iPod:
First, toggle your iPod's "Hold" switch back and forth a couple of times (leave it on the white side of the switch).
Then, press and hold the Menu and Select (center) buttons together for 5-10 seconds.
You might need to attempts this quite a few times. Also, if you connect your iPod to your computer or another power source while resetting, that can be more effective.
If resetting doesn't help, then I would suggest that you try restoring your iPod in iTunes.
For info on restoring, see this article about it:

  • My IPod is making audible scratching noises

My iPod has been flawless, until this weekend at the lake with all my friends it seems to have begun getting stuck on certain songs, where the song paly screen freezes and you can hear an audible scrathching noise, which is clearly the head vibrating back and forth. After a reboot, you can pick any song and it may or may not like it, and then it will either play the song with the scratching noises, or skip three to four songs and being playing. Of course I was travelling so I couldn't re-sync it with its home base computer until today. Nothing seemed to work, I even did a full restore. After deletion it loaded 1657 of 6620 songs and is now frozen on the base, even though the computer says all done. Help???

I am gaving the same exact problem. I have had my ipod for over two years and it just started acting up this week. It has been skipping songs and making a clicking noise. If you find anything out please let me know.
    Thanks

  • Scratch noise being burned into CDs.

Hi, I've done quite a bit of searching, but have been unable to fix my current problem. Whenever I burn CDs in iTunes I get these random scratch noises throughout the CD. I can burn in any other program just fine, such as Nero and Windows Media Player. However I rip all of my music with apple lossless, so I am kind of stuck with burning through iTunes. I'll list some fixes that I have tried to avoid wasting people's time.
    Things I have tried:
    - Using a slower speed, clicked right down to 1x to no avail.
    - Used different CDs
    - Used different programs
    - Used a different bit-rate, and even converted to mp3 before burning on occasion
    - Closed down every program that I could except iTunes
I don't have an advanced option on my ide/atapi channels in device manager to turn on DMA, could this somehow be the problem? As I know iTunes is kind of a RAM monster. My computer is 2.3gig processor and 1gig of RAM. Would installing an nLited version of Windows that I created help, as it would have to be using less resources than a full version?
    Thanks,
    Tannayr

bump, sorry to do it, but I'd really like to resolve this issue.

  • Why is there a strange diagonal "noise" appearing on my footage ?

    hi
i've made a rough cut of a piece i am working on and discovered a strange diagonal noise effect on the footage. its very faint but noticable. it appears mostly on "flat" or "even" areas like sky or waters.
here are the details of the project-
shot on DV with panasonic DVX100 at 25 P 4:3 (i use pal system)
captured with sony DSR-11 set to DV PAL (default)
edited in a DV PAL sequence (default - 25 lower field).
streatched to 16X9 (nested on a 16X9 sequence and changed aspect ration to 1). turned into black and white using a monochrome filter (cant remember the name...)
exported with compressor CBR 7.4 bits, Proggressive, anamorphic, motion-best. Automatic.
built on DVD SP 3, 16X9
    burned on toast 7.
is there something wrong with my workflow ?
can you think of a reason for those strange faint diagonals pulsing ? any suggestion ? maybe its my Tv (although i've never experience that before)?
i appriciate your replies and enjoy learing from you fellas...
    thanx

My guess is that the noise showing up in the stretching and then is magnified in the monochrome step.
To check if my hunch is right, take your original 4:3 footage and run it through the Monochrome filter and then export a 10 second bit of the most offensive noise. If it doesn't go away there, then it is porbably the Filter that is creating the noise. Try a different method of making it black and white.
If it does go away, then the problem was brought in by the Stretching. To fix it, rather than stretching your footage, crop it instead. Either use a 16:9 Matt in your 4:3 space, or pull the 4:3 into the 16:9 and just enlarge it until it fits your space (you will loose a little off the top and bottom).
    Hope that helps!

  • Scratching noise while using usb and internal sound simultaneous

    Hey,
I am using a new usb soundcard and my inernal sound, to
work with virtual dj. I played one song on the card and wanted
to listen to the other using my headphones. Everytime I use both
at the same time, I have a really loud scratching noise.
Also if I am not using the external soundcard.
Its working on my friends mac.
    please help :/
    kind regards
    Phillipe

The problem is the same with AC adapter plugged in or without it.
It's quite complicated to check the screws now - they are closed with the special stickers of the service center, if i'll remove those stickers i think the warranty terms will be violated and the warranty will dissapear.
If there would be some way to check serial number of the motherboard was installed first i could come to those guys with this information and ask to open the cover together with me and to check the numbers if they are the same.
I agree, maybe i should give it to another service, there are 2 different official services in my city. I just think it is a bit wront to simply let go that 1.5 months i could not use the item i've paid for about 1000 usd and nothing was done at all.

  • Strange popping noise when reversing

    Hello,
I have been using iMovie HD 6 for quite a while now (I downgraded), and the reverse feature has been working fine until now. When I reverse the clip (w/o changing the fast/slow marker), a strange popping noise replaces the usually reversed audio. I tried it on an iMac G4 with iMovie 4, and it created the same strange effect. (As an alternative, I've been using +J and Wavepad for the reverse audio) Can anyone fix this?
