Strange screen behaviour on new imac

Have had the new imac for a couple of weeks now and all of a sudden the display has started behaving very strangely. Intermittently it is distorting - jagged lines and graphics screwed. Screen capture is linked here:
http://www.malw.co.uk/photos/screencap.jpg
Hope someone can help! Thanks.

I was hoping I wouldn't have to do that. I've been on the phone for two hours to Applecare who have tried reinstalling OSX (archive mode?), PRAM reset etc. The computer is fine though in safe mode, which leads me to believe the problem might be software based? Their solution now is a complete reinstall so basically I have to spend not only time reinstalling but getting everything back in order - I have an 80gb itunes library and 20gb of photos for starters, plus a load of software I've installed. Anyway, before I have to take that rather drastic route, hopefully someone might come up with something I haven't tried yet.

  • Screen Cleaner for New iMac

What is a good screen cleaner for the new iMac? I've tride normal glass cleaner and it is a glass screen but i seemed to just make a mess. Please help!

" Never use Windex or equivalent products."
I'll second this suggestion. When I first cleaned my new 2013 21.5" iMac, I used
a "windex" type cleaner, and it made a mess (streaked and everything).  I actually though it was so bad that I had damaged the screen.  Fortunately, with water and a microfiber cloth I was able to clean off the "windex" streaking.
The thing is, the new 2013 iMac screen covering is more "plastic like" in material, and not as "glass like" in materials (as previous iMacs may have been), so it may be easier to damage (scratch) the screen surface if care isn't taken.
Always use a soft microfiber cloth (preferably with no sewed cloth edges - find a seamless edge microfiber cloth), to clean the new iMac screens.
If you need to, this "auto" microfiber cloth is one of the best:
    Mothers Ultra-Soft Polishing Cloth 16"x16" - Mothers MOT-155200
They are a hard to find style and are "no seam edgeless" style ... meaning they don't have a threaded sewed edge. Often many cheap microfiber cloths are made using a polyester sewing thread around tghe four outer edges, and even though the microfiber cloth itself may not scratch .... the four sided sewed edges can really scratch badly without knowing it.

  • Screen unexpectedly magnifies new iMac

I have the new iMac Core i5 OSX 10.8.2, 21 1/2". Periodically the screen magnifies and is non-navigable, nor can you do anything on it. The only way I have found is to shut down that program (it's usually safari). Any ideas?

Go to system prefernces, then accessibility...check to see if zoom is checked for scroll features.  It sounds like you are accidentally zooming your screen.  Uncheck the box and see if it helps.

  • Screen flickering and horizontal dotted line on screen of my new iMac.

I have a new iMac for 2 moths.
This morning sudenly my Mac shows a horizontal dotted line (1 pixel), at the bottom of the screen, at 15% from the bottom.
Below that line, the image starts to flicker now and then.
There is also a vertical yellow line accroos the screen (1 pixel)
The flickering is very anoying, what can I do?

    what can I do?
Take it to an Apple Store or an AASP. You're covered by warranty.

  • Strange sounds from my new iMac

I have these strange sounds going out of my iMac, it's from various apps,
How can I monitor where the sounds come from and for what reason?
I've looked in system preferences -> sound

    Thanks!

sorry for the poor data but it's the best i can do.
it's brand new but i won't replace it due to a minor bug that obviously can be fixed thanks to guys / girls like U!
No matter how minor it is, you should NOT be troubleshooting a Mac that has a window of 14 days of the purchase date no questions asked return and/or replacement date warranty.  What you are saying is you have no problem spending $2000+ on a buggy Mac.
    To each its own.

  • Strange/unusual behaviour of New-ish(Old white style) Macbook

I got my Macbook the same week the new ones came out, so its not very old.
Since day 1, sometimes when i turn it on the green light from the built in camera comes on, and wont go off until shut down. This then makes photobooth and any application that needs the camera unusable, until i restart.
Also recently, its started taking ages to start up. I only have the factor 1GB installed, but before it was nippy.
Then, one day it wouldn't start at all. It just stayed on the blue screen and that was it. So i booted from disc and archived and installed leopard, and it starts up but its still very slow.
I've got Leopard Onyx so i delete caches and unused files regurlarly and i even ran an anti virus to see if anything was going on, but nothing.
Its 4 months old, and just frustrating to wait 3-4mins for it to start up properly. It used to be on 30 seconds or so, so any advice is great.
Its the 2.1Ghz, intel core 2 duo, 1GB RAM, 120G HDD.
    Thanks in advance

How much of that hard drive is free? OS X needs at least 10% of the hard drive open at all times in order to function at its best. Have you used Disk Utility to repair permissions? If you open up Activity Monitor (Applications>Utilities) and look at All Processes, is any one program using a lot of CPU/RAM?
Also you don't need to shutdown your MacBook unless you've installed an update requiring it--or if it's being unusually difficult. Sleep mode consumes very little power and you won't have to wait for the machine to boot!

  • Strange Screen Behaviour When Scrolling

    Hi,
    anyone seen this before?
When users have scroll down in a panel, some display elements overlap each oher (see the two screenshots). By scrolling up and down a few times they can get their display back to normal.

I also have a very simple screen with just 3 drop downs and 7 radio button which show the same behaviour. Though due to security reasons I cannot post that screen over here. I work on a virtual machine and I do not see this problem happening for me, but our clients work on normal PCs and they see it every time they scroll the screen.
So does that mean that there does not exist any solution for this problem? I cannot move to AIR at this time.

  • Strange screen behaviour/desktop corruption

Has anyone else seen anything like this behaviour on a Mac? Everything was working fine until yesterday when this started when there was a blurring and duplication of the Finder windows and icons on the desktop. That then became an effect which is a bit hard to describe, it was like there was a scattering of different colour minute pixels around the edges of Finder windows and icons on the desktop. Did try changing the desktop pattern and restarting and the problem stopped for a short while but it's now back again, though it doesn't affect the icons on the dock it's especially problematic in applications such as Mail (see one screenshot below). I've attached a couple of screenshots to try and give a better idea of what's going on as it's a little hard to describe!

If anyone has any suggestions they'd be greatly appreciated!

I believe what you see is only a software problem and it's very likely caused by the Skype sofware. Since your screen goes blue for a moment it looks like there's some resolution change happening. Try to change your monitor resolution manually via System Preferences. Does it look the same? You don't need to uninstall directly. First go to Sys Prefs/Accounts and look what startup objects there are. If you see anything that doesn't "belong" there (like Skype) just remove it and do a reboot to find out if the situation has changed.

  • Strange LOV behaviour in new rows (UIX)

    Hi all,
we are using UIX for a JHS implementation project and came across a "JHS-00107: Table data are out of date, please requery" error while testing our JHS-generated forms. The problem arises in a table with multi-row-insert enabled where some of the (hidden) fields are already filled in by default (using the application structure -> view object editor). If we then select a value in the LOV and it is returned to the base page, the error is generated and the selected LOV value does not appear. Also, the row is marked dirty and asks for submission if I try to navigate to another page afterwards.
If we leave out the defaults, no error is generated.
Is there a workaround possible for this problem, as we would very much like to keep the default values in there ?
Also (but this is not really important to our case), an LOV always seems to return its selected value to the upper new row, even if a second or third new rows LOV button was used.
    Best regards,
    Benjamin

    Sandra,
    here's my scenario:
+ I unzipped the jhsdemo, adapted connection settings for my db and set the paths in appstructure files to the path i unzipped to
+ In the model project, I extended the Subordinates viewobject with the DepId attribute of the Employee entity object.
+ In the appstructure file of the viewcontrollerinternal project, I set use table range to false, enable insert multiple rows and set the new rows property to one for the subordinates group (subgroup of employees). I also added an LOV to this group for selecting the Department.
+ using the JHS viewobject property editor for the subordinates group, i set the display and display in tables value for FirstName to hidden and set a default value '${bindings.EmployeeFirstName}' for the same column.
+ Finally, I reran the JHS app generator
in this case, if I select a department using the LOV, after returning from the LOV popup, nothing changes (so the LOV value is not shown on the page)
If I set the display to true again and do the same for the EmpId attribute (hiding it and filling in '${bindings.EmployeeId}', which is the Id of this subordinates manager), the "JHS-00107: Table data are out of date, please requery" error appears as soon as I try to select a value from the LOV.
I guess the second case means the error has something to do with the foreign key relationship which I try to give a default value. I think for this particular situation (entering a default value of the manager), JHS would take care of the FK link automatically by itself, but at least in the first case the LOV doesn't really do what users might expect ?

  • Black screen on brand new iMac 27?  I hit power, hear tone, a voice to assist with set up and no video...not even a flicker.

Bought 27 in iMac on 9/29, un-boxed and plugged in on 9/30.  Heard startup tones and voice to assist with set up, but never ANY video at all.  Not even a flicker.  Reset, unplugged, and powered off and on many times but same result...WTH Apple?!

  • I am stuck in the registration information screen? Brand new imac!

WHat should I do - I have filled in all the info and the continue tab is greyed out - I can only press BACK or PRIVACY POLICY??

That is strange - I've never seen that. Once you get to that page, have you gone through all the other pages such as setting up Mail, internet settings, porting over your data from another Mac or backup, etc, etc? In other words: are you finished setting it up except for the registration?
If yes, I'd simply go to the file menu above (on left) and click on - I'm guessing - Setup Assistant and choose Quit.
P.S. By the way, if you do not register that way, at some point you should go online and register at Apple's website (unless you bought it from Apple - it should then be registered for the warranty already).
Oh, and another thought - when you are doing that registration page, are you connected to the internet?

  • My new iMac had the old data transferred in-store but now it won't accept the password on the first screen. How can I reset this? I can't get past the first screen as a result.

I cannot get past the initial screen on my new iMac. Data was transferred from my old computer so when I turned it on It automatically had my name in the window and asked for the password, but none of my old passwords seem to be accepted. How can I fix this?? It's a new IMac with osx.

Which password isn't working? The one to access the iPad or the one to get your hotmail?
If hot mail, you go into the settings, mail, contacts and calendars and edit your hot mail account. Of if it won't edit, delete it off the iPad, then re-add it with the new password.

  • New iMac freezing, showing Graphics problems and Wifi Problems on 1st Day

My sister just received her new iMac - 20 inch - 500 GB drive.
I started seeing problems during the download of the FIRST software update from apple. There was a black box in the lower left corner of the software update window where it should have been grey (or metal).
On reboot, I also occasionally show weird flickering graphics in the lower right of the login screen.
My new iMac also frooze about 4 different times during the installtion of various updates during the first 4 hours of use. Mouse and keyboard would not work. Once it frooze at the login screen after clicking on the user name.
I also had wifi issues. After three hours of use, my STRONG wifi connection was lost. Moreover, I could not see any other wifi stations. (normally I would see 5 other wifi access points from my sister's neighbours). After reboot, the other wifi access points would appear including my sisters but I could NOT connect to my sister's wifi access point. It said I had an error. I checked the keychain and it showed the right key/password for my sister's wifi AP. I had to run Mac Network Diagnostics and reset wifi to get things working again.
It sounds like a sick iMac. I know others have experienced freezing. But given all these problems, should I ask for a new imac?
    Rob
P.S. My sister got AppleCare as well. Maybe that was a good thing...

I had a long chat with Apple Support. It would appear that Apple's policy is not replace the computer unless it can be determined that it is a hardware problem (even though my problems started to appear right out of the box before I even had a chance to download any updates). According to the Apple product specialist, sometimes there are bad installs of the OS at the factory.
Apple wanted me to format the drive and reinstall the OS.
Fortunately, I did not have to reinstall the OS! I started to see graphics problems when I was asked to run the Disk Utilility off the Install DVD (so I could format the drive). So clearly there was a hardware problem.
In retrospect, I really wish there was an Apple Store nearby to buy Apple computers. I am sure the store manager would not ask me to go home and reinstall the OS etc and try again when the computer doesn't work properly out of the box.
Those who have Apple Stores nearby do not know how lucky they are!

I have the old machine backed up onto an external firewire disk but can't hook that up to the new imac as I'm waiting for delivery of a firewire 400/800 adaptor - therefore starting the old machine up as a slave is also subject to the same delay.
I was hoping there might be some way to create a network between the 2 machines (and 2 different versions of the OS) to be able to transfer data across immediately but perhaps I'll just have to wait for my firewire adaptor to arrive.
I don't understand why you're buying a Firewire adaptor, since AFAIK both of your computers have Firewire already built in.
All you need is a firewire cable. Connect the Firewire socket on the old machine to the Firewire socket on your new iMac.
Then start the old machine in Target Mode (i.e. by holding down the T key on its keyboard, while it's starting up, until you see the three-legged T icon hopping around the screen of the old machine.)
At that point you will also see a new icon on the screen of your new iMac. This is the hard drive of your old machine.  By clicking on it you can navigate through it any way you like, just as you would normally.
Just drag across whatever you want from the old computer to the new one. This will leave everything on the old computer untouched.
    - or use Migration Assistant but in my experience, Migration Assistant isn't very reliable and fails to migrate large amounts of stuff.
