Strange - severe WindowServer slowdowns after Safari use
I've run across this really strange problem only in the past few days after years of flawless Safari performance. My symptom is apparently that WindowServer (which controls drawing to all windows onscreen and offscreen in OS X) starts taking inordinate time for even simple graphics operations after certain conditions occur in Safari. The condition seems to be permanent until I log out or restart, at which time performance returns to normal.
I first noticed this problem after starting to view TV show episodes at nbc.com (Heroes, if that makes a difference). After a few minutes, or as little as one minute, the video framerate would reduce considerably and the system as a whole became less responsive. In some cases it feels "jerky", similarly to times of heavy pageouts. However, the condition is not associated with low memory and doesn't recover after a period of time. Graphics operations such as scrolling or moving a window, or even just typing text as I am doing now (I'm currently experiencing the symptom) cause WindowServer processor usage to spike inordinately. I can't see what WindowServer is doing with its processor time since, because it is owned by the "windowserver" user, I can't sample it using Activity Monitor.
At first, since the NBC site uses Flash and Javascript heavily, I thought that it perhaps was a problem with a beta version of Flash. I had been using version 9.0.20.0 and reverted to 9.0.16.0, but the problem still occurs. It's possible that an even earlier version, such as 8.0 might do better. I didn't test Javascript because the NBC site doesn't work with it turned off and there's no way to revert to an "earlier version" of Javascript.
However, I then noticed that seemingly the same symptom occurred two other times under different circumstances - once at cbs.com (which uses Real video) and once, strangely enough, while downloading a RAR file. The server misrepresented the MIME type of the RAR as a .txt file and, since I had it downloading from a background tab, I didn't realize that it was loading 17 MB worth of text into the Safari window instead of downloading to the Desktop. I switched to that tab and tried to stop the download around 11 MB, whereupon Safari stopped responding and the whole system bogged down until the file (and an AVI file downloading properly) finished downloading. That's when I noticed the WindowServer slowdown I am now experiencing.
If anyone has any advice about this (or can kick Apple or Adobe or Real or somebody into doing something about this) I'd appreciate it. I'm going to try reapplying the 10.4.8 combo updater and see what happens. Also, below I've reproduced the graphics sections of two Xbench tests representing "before" and "after" scenarios. You can see that OpenGL remains mostly unaffected, but Quartz graphics really take a hit.

Well, well, well. Don't I feel stupid. Guess I fell into the common scenario where the person experiencing the problem assumes it's because of anything but himself. The problem had been very reproducible with NBC, and I still don't understand how anything Safari does could affect WindowServer like I was seeing, but the problem did not reoccur with a clean user account (after restarting - the "corrupt" WindowServer seemed to affect all users the same). So I went back to my normal user and used Onyx to clean out ALL caches (App, Font, System, Kernel) for all users and, for good measure, had it delete "Temporary and obsolete items". Restarted again and now the problem doesn't occur even in my normal account, at least for now. I never found these freeware maintenance apps to be much use, since they never actively repair problems and most of their functions are placebos anyway (running the OS's maintenance scripts, prebinding, etc.). I never ran into corrupt caches before (if that's what it was this time) and so I didn't find that useful either. There's always a first time.
Thanks for your help.

When creating a new window in safari, using command T, the marker have not activated the search field. It means you have to click there every time. Changed after upgrading to Mavericks. Anyone knows how to change this?
Yes, you can do something like that. What you would do is create a button for each image and then hide them. When I do this type of thing I place all of the buttons on a template page and then hide the template.
You can then use JavaScript to copy the icon from any of the hidden buttons to the main button that you've set up to display the image. For example, suppose you set up 10 buttons named b1, b2, b3, ...b10. The code to copy the icon from one of them to the button used to display the image (b0) would be something like this:
// Get the icon from the b3 button
var oIcon = getField("b3").buttonGetIcon();
// Get reference to the b0 button
var f = getField("b0");
// Set the icon of the b0 button to the icon retrieved from the hidden button
f.buttonSetIcon(oIcon);
// Show the b0 button
f.display = display.visible;
This code would go in the Mouse Up event of the smaller button. -
Safari problem after prolonged use.
Right heres my current annoyance with my iPhone 3G, taken from my actual phone:
http://i35.tinypic.com/1zwlpv9.jpg
Browsing the web via Safari is usually a joy for the first 10 minutes or so continual use. I get no errors, no timeouts and speeds are near enough as quick as my 20mb cable connection whilst browsing on my MacBook.
However, after prolonged use of Safari, I start getting the above error almost every time I click on a link or try to change website. If I click on the link enough it will eventually load though. Not only that, as you can see from the screenshot above of Facebook, you can see Safari will change the font and the layout so it looks like the above. Images also wont load. Turning the phone off and rebooting seems to cure it.
I was hoping 2.0.1 and more recently 2.0.2 would fix this but its still there more than ever.
To combat the problem, I hard reset the phone, did a full restore to 2.0.2 and set up a new phone profile but still got the same problem after prolonged use.
Anyone have the same problem or even better, a solution? Im starting to think I have a fault with my iPhone.

Safari 3.0.4 crashes after Safari Icon 2.7 mods
After unsuccessfully attempting to change the Brushed Metal appearance of Safari using Safari Icon v2.7 the browser keeps crashing upon launch.
I had changed the icons, but couldn't change the overall appearance. The settings to do that were faded. I poked around the preference docs for Safari Icon and got the idea (probably erroneously) that if I changed the Safari version number in Safari Icon's Nibs folder from 2.0.4 to 3.0.4 that would enable the appearance settings.
It did. So I changed the appearance to Aqua. And from that point on Safari kept crashing. I went back into the Nibs folder for Safari Icon and changed the browsers version number back to 2.0.4. Safari still keeps crashing.
I ran Onyx and Tech Tool Platinum, still keeps crashing but maybe hangs on 5-10 seconds longer than before the maintenance utilities were run.
I also trashed Safari Icon. Maybe that was an error on my part, but it's gone. Safari still keeps crashing upon launch.
Nothing else seems to be affected on my system.
I logged in as another user and Safari crashes for that user as well.
Do I reinstall from the installation disks? Is Safari necessary for anything critical? (I don't mean for browsing, as in benefits of Safari vs Camino vs et al. I mean for using Software Update, that sort of thing).
Here's a copy-and-paste of the most recent crash I dug out of the Crash logs:

Thank you for any assistance.Hi
by 'hosed' I meant corrupted, somethings been changed inside the application package that's causing this problem.
In theory, Sure, if the input managers were fine before, then likely it's nothing to do with them.... just an observation really, that you have a few installed, most of which operate on all user accounts.
I guess pacifist will have detailed instructions with it, dunno, ( other than you'd get the update, open it with Pacifist & choose the Safari application ) I never used it myself; but have a search on this forum. There have been some detailed posts on re-installing Safari this way.
Unpkg- you download the appropriate update for 10.4.11 ( intel or ppc processor, depending on what mac... ), I believe the Delta ( not combo) update contains the full Safari application, if you're trying to save bandwidth. Then you open the pkg with UnPkg - it'll create a folder on the desktop that contains every file that the update would install. Inside this, in the applications folder, you should see Safari. Trash your existing version, then copy the new one into the main Applications folder, then repair disk permissions via disk utility.
I don't know offhand if any security updates since 10.4.11 have modified Safari for Tiger ( there were some small changes for Leopard ) so, it's possible that any such updates will need re-applying.
I can't speedily find any info on your safari Icon changing application, but I'm assuming it changes just the Safari application package & no other files. If there's a possibility it modifies other things, I'd suggest you download the 'combo' updater mentioned above, since you might need it . -
Upgraded new iPad to iOS 5 after successfully using the machine for two weeks. The apps I downloaded are still here, checked for updates, all okay. However, when I try to use iBooks app or even USA Today, icon shakes, settles down then nothing else happens. Several tries, settings appear correct. Suggestions? Safari operates correctly, music icon matches (not from iTunes, simply music on my MacPro and iPod). Is Cloud the issue, perhaps? But everything worked before the upgrade. Using my home network. Hope this info suffices. Appreciate any guidance.
Problem solved. Saw the solution in a more recent post. Downloaded a free app, then all my other apps started to work again.

Hello everyone.
Faced very strange issue with account, which is used to run SSIS package.
The specific package uses Foreach Loop Container to retrieve file names within the specified folder, and put them into Import file task.
The package is set up to run under specific service account. This service account is given all permissions (Full control) to the folder where source files reside.
So the issue is: SSIS package fails to execute this task (Foreach Loop Container and then Import), and shows that no files are found in the directory (although files ARE there).
Once we're adding the service account into local Administrators group on the SQL Server, it works! Removing - does not work again. We cannot leave the service account as SQL server's admin as it's prohibited by our IT policies, and is just a bad practice.
Any ideas, please?

Aperture 3 shuts down every time I try to use it after only using it for one minute. Aperture closes then a pop up screen asks if I want to reopen Aperture. If somrone at Aperture didn't keep pushing a stop button for it to close,Apple wouldn't need to ask the stupid question"Do you want to reopen Aperture?" to begin with. Anyone out there having the same annoying problem?? I like Aperture or used to anyway,but if this nonsense continues, I will be forced to buy some other editor besides "No hanging fruit - Adobe photoshop CS5" or "I don't like you so I'm shutting down - Aperture".
Hello,
sorry to hear about your troubles, but we will need to have more technical information about your problem to be able to help you:
There may be several reasons that can cause Aperture to crash on start up:
You may have imported an image (or video) in an encoding that Aperture does not support, or that is larger than 2 GB, or that is corrupted and Aperture cannot process it
Your Aperture Library or Preferences may have been corrupted
Or you are having a system wide problem with your machine.
Or you may simple be running out of disk space.
It would help, if you could post the crash log from your last crash. Also, more details on your Aperture Library: Is it managed or references? how large is it? Is it on your system drive or on an external drive?
What have you done, shortly before the trouble started? Have you imported new images or videos? Did you install any plug-ins or any new software, lile Final Cut?
Try, if you can get Aperture to launch, if you defer the generation of Previews: Hold down the SHIFT-key immediately after you start Aperture to prevent preview generation for that session. If a damaged image in your library is preventing normal opening, this may allow you to start Aperture. If this succeeds, try to identify the broken image or video among the images you recently imported and remove it from the library.
Regards
Léonie

ICloud continues to show open tabs even after Safari quit
Since OS 10.10, when I close and quit Safari on my iMac or MBP iCloud occasionally continues to show an open tab on the other devices like the iPhone, even for several hours after Safari has been quit on the iMac. This is annoying in that one time I left it, and the iMac restarted because of a kernel panic.
This appears to be an iCloud and Yosemite problem. Furthermore, I have called Apple care twice about this, and they have been unable to find any problem with my computers.
Has anyone else had this problem, and what to do about it.Try clearing Safari's cache : Settings > Safari > Clear Cache (and Clear History)

Safari using Keychain ?s
I'm trying to understand the auto fill of internet forms.
Is there any site/article that explains for the curious this topic and
any security issues?
I think I understand that Safari uses Keychain to store IDs and
passwords and uses past history to fill in other information on internet
forms. Do I have that right?
But for Firefox, it appears that the IDs and passwords are saved by
Firefox not by Keychain. Do I have that right? If so, is it only Safari
that uses Keychain?
Thank you.Hi,
But for Firefox, it appears that the IDs and passwords are saved by
Firefox not by Keychain. Do I have that right? If so, is it only Safari that uses Keychain?
Firefox was designed to be run on several different platforms like Windows, MacOSX, Linux, etc. from ideally the same source code. Windows doesn't have an in-built equivalent of the Keychain (I think) and I don't know about Linux, so for this particular instance it was probably easier for the developers to use their own standard scheme for storing passwords (rather than adding platform specific code).
Any Mac OS X application can access the Keychain if it uses the correct interfaces from it's code. Mail, iChat, Airport, .Mac, Camino (a browser that uses the same rendering engine as Firefox), MSN Messenger, Skype, Adium to name but a few all make use of the Keychain. -
Hi, after Safari 5.1 update the following plugin is missing: Switchable Java Plug-in for WebKit Java Switchable Plug-in (Cocoa) — von der Datei “JavaPluginCocoa.bundle”. How can I add this plugin manually? Because some applets are not working now! I restored the OS to Safari 5.0.5,
now everything works fine. Is there any bugfix planned for Safari 5.1?Thanks, already managed to fix it with Time Machine Back-Up, however, you need only to restore the Safari.app file (can be found in Applications in Time Machine at a date before the last software upgrade to Safari 5.1)
So, practically,
go to Enter Time Machine
-> browse (using the arrows at right hand bottom) to a date when everthing was still working
-> go to Finder
-> go to the hard drive (probably named Macintosh HD)
-> go to Applications
-> go to Safari.app
-> highlight Safari.app by clicking on it
-> hold 'ctrl' key and click again
-> select from the drop menu that appears 'Get Info'
-> next verify that is written 'version 5.0.5'
-> close Info drop menu
-> make sure the file Safari.app is still highlighted and click on 'Restore' under the arrows at righthand bottom of screen in Time Machine.
Now you can leave Time Machine by clicking on Cancel on lefthand bottom
Safari 5.0.5 will be added to the Applications under Safari.app (Safari 5.1 will also still be there and has the word (original) written behind it) drag this (original) marked file to the trash.
That's all, works very good and means the whole system does not have to be re-installed.
Hopefully Apple will cure this 5.1 version quickly - Make sure always to make a Time Machine Back-up before updating software!
Hope this works for you all! -
OS X slow, laggy after Safari 4.0.5 update
Short: My late 2007 MBP has been working flawless until safari 4.0.5 update.
After, OS X is laggy...
After the update everything seemed fine, but after i've been working for a while, OS X acts laggy.
Applications and such, opens fast, but doing any graphic intensive like, moving windows, open dashboard (not really graphic intensive but...), playing the game Braid, or any Open GL game for that matter is pure torture.
The funny thing is if i change my display resolution from 1440x900 to 1280x800, then back again, everything is back to snappy old OS X that i'm used to for a minute or two, then the laggyness is back again.
This all started after Safari 4.0.5, i've never experienced this before.
I've tried to run a few system maintenance tools like onyx without any success to my problem.
I reinstalled OS X 10.6.2 update - no luck
I Reinstalled my whole system from scratch. Worked fine until.... Safari 4.0.5
Anyone else having the same problem?
My MacMini's working fine, same goes for my buddys MBP unibody first model.you didn't import your old prefs and bookmarks back?
When Safari launches, it caches your bookmarks and writes them into a new folder. And that lets Spotlight start indexing.
Maybe you have something connected to your system that is causing problems, interference, or router (see notes, Apple mentions a fix for Linksys, why? and are there other router-related issues?)
At least a clean install (I would have done so on a spare hard drive) rules out any 3rd party extensions, plug-ins, and such, yes? Any update to a browser tends to work best if the old cache and sometimes prefs are removed and create a new profile.
I still think a good clone that you can boot from beats a fresh install from scratch any day of the week.
Maybe zero or 7-way write erase the entire drive at some time (best done before using), though even that isn't a guarantee to find, let alone map out, weak sectors. And no, it isn't done automatically by itself or something.
With only one post (now two) it is always hard to know the level of troubleshooting expertise. Restoring from, and having backup clones, should be a standard practice.

Give me an uninstall programs feature, please! Create a restore point; and, rollback driver updates, and make this a modern OS. Or maybe 10.6.2 isn't ready for prime time. It is sluggish on my quad-core Mac unlike any prior version that ran on it (10.4.6 thru 10.5.8). Maybe it didn't get enough testing, or it was but works best on future update to the system.
I've seen users with trouble with Safari that: can't be duplicated, couldn't be resolved, both Mac and Windows versions. But my bet is something is left out, not mentioned. -
Why is Safari Using up All My RAM?
I've read, and posted various topics related to this issue, and have not yet seen any answers to this.
Some say "why is this a problem"? Well, this is a problem if all I'm basically running is Safari, Mail, & maybe iTunes, and the Activity Monitor shows:
Safari - using 662.30 MB of "Real RAM", & (really) 24.62GB of Virtual Memory (& it's gone as high as 135 GB) which is ABSURD!
Plus, even though I'm using 1.09GB of "Active memory", & 680.14MB is "Inactive", they are added, to show 1.96 GB of Used memory, leaving me a whole 35.86 MB of memory left!
Thus, I get big slowdowns, some programs won't even work, etc.... I empty the cache constantly, use flash only on the windows I'm choosing to activate flash for, thus it forces me to close Safari, or use Firefox if I need to use any other programs! This is very frustrating, and would love to hear if anyone has either a fix for this, or at least a rational explanation as to why Safari is using up nearly all of my available memory. (it would be nice if my iMac could hold more than 2GBs)...HI,
If an application freezes or crashes, and you need to Force Quit, use the Activity Monitor.
Safari VM on my iMac runs about 146MB. Are you absolutely certain it says: 135GB and not MB?
Just emptying the Safari cache isn't the only maintenance available.
Troubleshoot third-party plug-ins
If you're using the latest versions of any third-party plug-ins yet Safari still unexpectedly quits, try disabling plug-ins:
Open Safari.
From the Safari menu, choose Preferences.
Click Security.
Deselect "Enable plug-ins".
Use Safari for a while until you are reasonably certain it is no longer unexpectly quitting
Go to:
/Library/InputManagers
~/Library/InputManagers
If there are any files in the Input Managers folders, move them to the Trash.
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
It's always possible there's an underlying issue.. perhpaps a problem with the Mac OS X itself.

Why is it when I choose "block cookies always" I still get lots of cookies showing up when I look at my preferences. I always clear my cookies after each use but I don't understand how I can get any at all if they are supposed to block cookies always? I have a desk top Mac and am using safari.
Safari caches cookies in memory and will sometimes write them back to disk after they've been deleted, for reasons known only to the developers. After deleting cookies, quit Safari immediately, then relaunch it. The cookies should now be gone for good, or until you visit the same sites again.

Strange Snow Leopard/iMac email/Safari problem
I just got my daughter a new iMac (10.6.4) and she is having strange graphics issues. Some websites using Safari and some emails using Apple Mail have all the text replaced by small squares with an "A" in them - mostly black but some blue.
I've been around Macs for awhile but I've never seen anything like this. Default encoding on Safari is Western (ISO Latin 1) which is what I use without issues. Hers is happening in both mail and Safari.
Any ideas before we call Apple?
Here is a png of a bad email - http://www.goodguysposse.org/temporary/BadEmail.png
Message was edited by: Denny GrangerHere is a site that comes up with the boxed "A". http://appletoolbox.com/
I'm pretty sure the site isn't a problem as it comes up fine on my iPhone, iPad, MacBook Pro & Mac Pro. Since my daughter's iMac is only a couple of weeks old, I thought there might be a setting or preference that is at fault.
