Strange Shadows Cast by Windows

Hi, everybody,
I have recently begun to experience a very strange phenomenon on my old iMac DV 400mhz.
First, a little background. The unit is about 10 years old, has an upgraded 120 GB hard drive, and has 768 MB of RAM installed. I am currently running Mac OS X 10.4.11 Tiger, and I have a number of applications installed, including, most recently, the Gimp photo shop program (which works through the X11 shell).
Now, to the problem. Within the last few days, I've noticed what seems to be a faded ghosting effect on the right side of the screen. It is visible to the right of most open windows and menus, and is most starkly visible on the boot screen.
Included below are a few sample pictures that will illustrate what I'm talking about.

(Taken with my iPhone)
I am puzzled because when I take a screen capture, none of the shadows show up -- as you can see in this picture:
This leads me to believe that there is something happening to my monitor. I guess my question is, "What could that be?"
I've already repaired Disk Permissions, Verified the Disk, reset the PRAM, and started up from the Mac OS X Install Disk, and the strange shadows are still visible. I even used the calibration assistant in System Preferences. Does anyone have any idea about what's happening? Has this happened to anyone else? Is my monitor finally starting to die after 10 years? Is there something else I'm missing?
I'd appreciate any help that you guys can provide. I've always enjoyed this forum community in the past, and I hope to communicate warmly and helpfully on a more regular basis in the future.
Thanks!
Sammy Larkin

If you look carefully at the LEFT side of the white box in the "Starting Mac OS X" screenshot, there is a magenta cast all up and down the left side, a bit more pronounced at the bottom of the box. This says to me that your display has color convergence problems (all the electon guns are not aimed at quite the same spot to give pure white everywhere). \[White areas are formed by lighting up adjacent Red, Green and Blue phosphor dots on the screen. If the convergence is not quite right, areas that should be white will have color casts.] I think that the shadow you see is an echo of this color mis-alignment.
This is a physical problem inside the CRT, nothing to do with software. That is why your screen shot looks great, despite the defects of the picture on the display.
This can happen whether the display uses three electron guns shooting at clusters of dots (Tridot) or a single electron gun shooting at alternating stripes (Trinitron) technology. Yours may be a Trinitron, as it appears to have the tiny imperfections, narrower than a pixel high, that extend all the way across the screen near the top and bottom, and possibly a few more. These are caused by the tiny wires that support the aperture grill used to mask off stray electrons in a Trinitron display.
On your display, I do not know offhand whether color convergence is something that can be changed under software control. On many large (21" and up) SONY displays, there are controls in the software or on the front panel that can be used to adjust the color convergence.
If there are no such controls, the display may have to be opened, and adjusted with the power on and covers off. This may expose the technician to upwards of 10,000 Volts, and should only be undertaken by those trained in proper safety procedures. It can be very dangerous. Connecting that Voltage across your heart (e.g., Hand-to-hand) can stop your heart.

  • Disappearing Colors show up only in the shadows of other windows

Ok - this is weird: I noticed that some colors in web designs I was working on were not displaying. Like a light grey nav bar shows up white. This is also true in certain applications - the light blue row color in Yojimbo and my font manager are not showing up.
And yet, if I drag my photoshop color picker over the areas that should be colored, it registers the correct hex color, but still displays it as white.
And then I realized that these missing colors show up in the drop shadows of +other windows+ when I place or drag those windows over the window with the missing color (my design or Yojimbo say).
I've restarted a couple times and recalibrated my display. This had no effect. The colors displayed normally when I logged in under a different user account, so I believe the problem can be isolated to a user account issue and not a display issue, but, of course, I am not positive about that.
Has anyone experienced this before, or have any troubleshooting advice.
    Thanks!
    Matthew

  • Xcompgr + urxvt with true transparency no shadows around the window

    hello!
i have a big problem. i want a terminal with real transparency. making a other terminal transparent with transset is bad, because it makes the whole window transparent, also the borders!
so i decided to try urxvt. i start urxvt with the following command:
urxvt -fn "xft:Monospace:pixelsize=11" +sb -depth 32 -fg white -bg rgba:2000/2000/2000/dddd
it works, the terminal has real transparency, but it has no shadows around the window/terminal. when i start urxvt with a depth of 24, there are shadows but no transparency!
i'm running e17 with xcompmgr and the following settings:
    xcompmgr -c -f -r4 -t-3 -l-3 -D5 -o 0.7 -d :0.0&
is there someone who can help me? i hope it!

Actually I do and I have no shadows either - but I wasn't even aware of this issue until you pointed it out.
But I like it without shadow, using OpenBox here.

  • How to get drop shadow text in windows version of LabVIEW 2009

In the lower left corner of the attached JPG you can see that "Instrument Cluster" has a drop shadow.  I created it by accident and would like to use drop-shadow for control names, but I cannot figure out how I did it. The only "Style" options in my Text Properties drop-down menu are Plain, Bold, Italic, Underline, Outline and Strikeout.
The Help file implies that it can be done in MAC OS. I just did it in Windows.
    Does anyone know how?

I guess it is floating because I typed it on a boundary?

  • Cairo-compmgr-git and shadows for new windows

Hi, I'm using stand-alone Openbox and installed cairo-compmgr-git from AUR. Everything seems to work fine except for one thing, shadows don't get drawn for new windows, just for the ones I have already open when I run "cairo-compmgr -n". This doesn't happen with cairo-compmgr from the community repository, but with this version, conky windows have shadows. Xcompmgr-dana works fine also, but the entire screen flickers when dragging things around. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I got the same problem today after a normal update, now the cairo-compmgr from the community repo is having the same issue. I deleted the config file from ~/.config/cairo-compmgr and nothing.
    Some help will be appreaciated

  • Strange graphics problem in Windows 7

I'm having a strange problem with my graphics while in Windows 7 home premium.
    Here are my stats:
    iMac
    27-inch, Mid 2010
Processor  2.93 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics  ATI Radeon HD 5750 1024 MB
Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4
    Bootcamp ver. 4.0.3
I recently reinstalled Windows 7 on my computer and started to have a strange problem occur. When playing games, my screen's contrast will change and the color will fade away...This is accompanied by a slowdown by the computer. The graphics effect is very similar to the effect that Windows uses when switching around Aero themes. This occurrs when the game's effects get very active, or there's a lot of sprites/objects processing in the game. I updated the drivers with the latest from ATI and the problem still persists.
I originally suspected a driver problem as the boot camp driver CD that I made dropped my windows graphics score to 5.8 (was originally 7.6 before the reinstal of the OS). When I reinstalled with the driver from ATI the score jumped up to 7.6 again. However, the color fading and slowing down continued and even caused the computer to lock up once.  I'm at a loss.
I haven't had any problems in OS X, which leads me to believe that it isn't a hardware issue (at least I hope not). I couldn't find anything on google or here that quite described this problem. Any help would be appreciated.

Did you install Win 7, and that's all? If so, you're missing a lot of drivers in Windows so it will recognize the Mac hardware.
Boot to Win 7. Put the OS X installation disk in the drive. It will automatically install basic drivers for Windows. It will tell you when it's finished, and to restart. After that, you'll find an Apple Software Update icon in the Windows start menu. Run that to install updated Boot Camp drivers and other updates from Apple.

  • Configuring Volume Shadow Copies in Windows Server 2012 R2 Core

    Hello,
I have a File Server under Windows Server 2012 R2 Core under a Lab Environment, I am trying to configure the Volume Shadow Copy on it, I tried to remote to its Disk Management via Computer Management but couldn't find the configuration for it.
    Any Ideas?
    For God, and Country.

    Hi Sheen Lim,
As far as I know we can use cmdlets to manage the volume shadow copy in server core but can not use the server manager remotely. You can refer the following third party article
    to enable the VSS.

  • Strange Blueish cast after Exporting

I color correct my 1080p clips with 3 way color corrector. When there are white portions, I usually use the eye dropper of the hilights to make sure I get a pure white.
Then I batch export them to Pro Res 422 HQ. When I check them later (pre check in Quick Time, and those with strong cast I bring back to FCP for more accurate check. Very often I find the whites (and the overall image) have a blue cast
I run a test with b&white gradient..... but can not see any color shift.
This is quite disturbing, since I work on hundreds of clips, because I have a double work color correcting them. I also notice sometimes that the clips seem to be darker than when I corrected them first.

When color correcting, are you checking the outcome on a reference monitor, or the preview window of Final Cut pro? If yes you're bound to see differences.
The other important thing is, what are the source files you're editing with? You might be essentially (when rendering to ProRes HQ) converting 8bit to 10bit, so there are bound to be some changes...

  • Strange Booting problem in windows

I have a boot camp partitioned macbook pro hard drive with windows XP 32 bit service pack 2 installed. I have a strange problem. When I start windows the computer intermittently boots to where it starts loading the windows desktop then 15 seconds into the process the computer shutdowns and restarts this time displaying the windows boot up disk checker. The blue screen says hit any key to halt the disk checking process but if you hit any key the process just continues. This takes about 2 min after which it finds a problem on the hard drive or most times it does not find a problem. Then the system continues to load windows and everything works fine. Now here is the kicker, it only happens sometimes. When I first got this Macbook Pro (one year ago) I used only Mac for a few days and after loading some software I kept getting "Kernel Panics" which were fixed when I shutdown and restarted. This was fixed by reloading the Apple operating system. The one before Leopard. Then sometimes I would get the Kernel Panics after awaking the computer from a sleep. For some reason that is not a problem anymore. It is taking a really long time for the computer to boot now also in both windows (probably normal) and mac (not really very normal).
Any Ideas. I was thinking I might have a memory problem.

Yea the reason it starts disk checking is because on the first "cold" boot into windows it gets to the part of the boot process where the windows is loaded then it starts loading software. Somewhere during this process it just reboots for no reason. It never finishes the boot process. This is what causes the disk checking. The weird thing is it does not do this every time. Yes when windows finally shuts down it shuts down normally. I have the same boot camp setup on my mac pro and everything works. I am beginning to think something is wrong with my macbook pro hardware wise.
Another weird thing is when I run windows the fans come on and the processor runs very hot. As soon as I shutdown and boot to the mac side every thing runs cooler and the fans hardly come on.

  • MSI Neo2 Platinum (Winchester3200) - strange instability issue in Windows

    My specs:
    Winchester 3200 CPU
    MSI Neo2 Platinum 1.4 bios
    2 x 512 Kingston PC4000 3-3-3-8-1
    Gainward 5900Xt GS
Seagate 160Gb SATA on SATA port 3
The problem seems quite odd to me, so I decided to post here. Generally, the PC is stable, passes more than an hour of Prime95, 3d marks run fine etc.. but in Windows (XP Sp1) I'm getting this annoying issue: when I let the system run idle for a while, with none or some windows open but no programs active, my computer literally freezes. I can move the mouse, but i can't open any windows or click any buttons. Still, the keyboard is responding so I hit ALT + CTRL + DEL and get the Windows Security window. There I click on the Task Manager and all i get is an empty desktop, with the wallpaper but no icons or any activity whatsoever.
    Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Nope.. And I hardly believe it's a software issue. Will try a fresh install of XP today, nut the reason of such strange behaviour escapes me :] Cmon people, any ideas ?
If you problem isn't related to software, then the only other thing that comes to mind is that overclocking is the culprit.  I'm not overclocking anything (except my 3d card, and that only slightly) and have no such problems with my K8N Neo2.  You describe a strange problem, certainly, and in my own experience such behaviors--system runs great in some normal situtations but in others it doesn't--have always been related to overclocking of some kind.  If you aren't overclocking anything then it's probably software induced.  Good luck!

  • Problem with strange border-colors on windows 2000

On windows 2000, I have the problem, that my JButtons, JComboboxes and so on are rainbow-colord (if I do not set a special Border to theser Components). What can I do (if possible, I would not set explicit borders to all Components; and for Popups-Dialogues, it is not possible to set spcial borders, is it?)
    Thank you for any help!

I'm seeing the exact same behavior on my 8.1 Laptop.  I tried deleting the Skype tmp folder as suggested elsewhere, I also uninstalled and reinstalled Skype for Desktop and still can't hang up a call  and often can't answer a call either.  Makes Skype completely useless at this point.

  • Strange backdrop on transparent windows with xcompmgr and i3

Hi there! I have disabled title bars in my i3 config, and I use xcompmgr for a little transparency. However, in the space where the title bar would be, garbage is visible behind the transparent backround of some windows.
Any ideas? I tried a few other compositing managers and the problem was reproducable on several.

    Wow psychadelic!
I found xcompmgr to be rather buggy when I used to use it. Try xcompmgr-dana (dcompmgr I think)  or Compton. I used to use Compton and it worked pretty well.
I stopped using real transparency in favor of pseudo-transparency because I sometimes use the tabbed mode on multiple terminals... tell me how awesome it is to read three terminals stacked on each other

  • Strange Issue: App UI Window not coming up (OS X w/ AIR 2)

A coworker of mine recently upgraded his OS X to 10.6, then to 10.6.4, and now an app we use internally won't start on his machine. I have the exact same setup as he does (OS X 10.6.4, AIR 2, Flash Player 10.1, same app version) and mine starts just fine. The app icon in his dock bounces once and then stops but no window comes up. We've tried uninstalling and reinstalling FP, AIR and the app itself, but no luck. I'm guessing it has something to do with the 10.6 upgrade, but has anyone run into this before? Any possible solutions?
It's kind of urgent so any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have seen this same issue.... while Im developing if I add certain code to a spark skin all of the sudden when I run my app in ADL you can see Flash Builder starts a thread and I get all of my traces but my os doesnt show the app running and no errors are thrown.  Then if I comment out a certain line of code it starts to work again.  So maybe you are seeing an issue similar to this?  I have no idea sorry Im just trying to keep the topic going with ideas.
