Strange shutdown

I had just taken a second photo. A message appeared and disappeared so fast I couldn't read it. Display went dark and I could not turn the device on. I tried for about five minutes without success. just as I was about to pull the battery, it came back on. No loss of data. The battery was at 95% and I have a 4gb card in it.
Any thoughts on this appreciated.

Check links below. Every link describes a step and points to screenshot.
1. Select "Media" icon
2. Select "Pictures" icon
3. Open menu and select "Explore"
4. Navigate device memory and media card contents
You have filled device memory and because of that you get stange device behaviour. Free your memory device and transfer files to the memory card.
If aforecited steps do not work for you - use Media Manager to transfer files from device memory to memory card.

  • Strange shutdown problem

    Hi,
Last night, I had a strange shutdown problem on my iMac G5 (revB, 20", 2.0 Gig), with 1 Gig RAM, running 10.4.4 with all updates. I had had the computer on most of the day, using it off and on. I shut it down, and left the room. When I came back about an hour later, the fans were running (not rapidly, just at the normal speed they run when the computer is running), but the screen was blank, and the "sleep" light was not on. The computer wouldn't respond to any moving the mouse or to keyboard input. I finally shut it down by holding the power button until the fans shut down. Upon restart, everything was normal, and after using it for a few minutes, I was able to shut it down normally. Has anyone else seen this sort of behavior, and is it normal ? Or am I about to have more problems.
    Thanks in advance,
    Dave Fritzinger

    Hi Dave,
By the sound of it your computer has "hung" during the shutdown process, but at a point in the process where the system's temperature control mechanisms were still operating (otherwise the fans would be running flat out). My guess in this case is that it was probably actually a finder crash.
Various things can prevent proper shutdown. Often USB or FW devices are to blame. USB adsl modems , some scanners and hubs and the occasional printer driver seem to be common causes. Software can be responsible too, though - background virus or drive checkers are probably the most common, but far from the only possible causes ( I seem to remember "SpringCleaning" causing this problem when people moved to Tiger 10.4.2 for example) .
New software or hardware are therefore the first things to look for.
If you haven't installed anything completely new then one possibility may be that something you are using is not compatible with the latest OS update, and needs an upgrade to a driver. Its also possible that this is a "one off" glitch caused by a temporary problem , but if it happens again I'd be taking careful note of anything that you were using in the previous session.
You might also want to use the Console (in Utilities folder) to look at your system and crash logs.
    Cheers
    Rod

  • Strange Shutdown Issue

My Macbook has already been sent into repair once, it took them two weeks until I had a global search put on. My Macbook has been fine for the past 2 weeks, no shutdown problems whatsoever. However, recently, I've been having shutdowns like crazy.
Now, I mostly use my Macbook hooked up the AC adapter, and on my bed, because it hurts my back to sit in a chair all day, and if I'm going to sit, I might as well use my Mini.
However, I have just been using my Macbook (both in Boot Camp and in OS X) for over two hours on a hard tabletop. No shutdowns, no problems. I've played games, did some work, and just left it sitting for a while.
I've contact Apple Support, and they want me to send it back to the repair dock to take a look at it. However, I cannot afford to do this, as I bought the computer for school and I just started school yesterday. Being a week (he says, althought I'm sure it'll be more) or two without my Macbook will be devastating, as I will not have any way to organize myself as well as 4 out of 5 of my classes being computer based. I use my iSight to video my professors during lectures as well.
While on the bed, the Macbook would shut down cold. It's not a thermal issue. What could be causing the shutdowns on the bed or on my lap, as opposed to the tabletop?

I don't think there's anybody who can tell you WHY the shutdowns are happening.

    Two things:
    1) How did you organize yourself before you got the Macbook? I suppose it shouldn't be too much of a stretch to go back to that method while your machine is away.
    2) How on Earth are you using the built-in iSight to record your professors during lectures and using the machine at the same time? I would think it quite rude to be sitting with your back turned away from him/her while ducked to one side or the other.
If you don't want to send the thing in because there's just no way you could function in a university setting without it (I'm not sure there are too many universities out there that don't have some sort of computer facilities for their students but apparently you're at one), I guess you're going to be stuck in shutdown city until you get a grip enough to accept that you just may have to be "inconvenienced" for a bit by going to a lab elsewhere or using someone else's machine.
At any rate, I hope you get it fixed.

  • Strange Shutdown Before Sleep & Airport Network Corruption

I'm having a very odd problem and I can't seem to find any resolve. Hopefully someone can provide some kind of insight.
I have a PowerBook G4 1.5GHz running OS X 10.5.6. I connect to OS X Server when at the office. I've owned the machine since August 2005 and it's no longer under warranty. I received a replacement battery from Apple for my original battery when it was recalled. The replacement battery was conditioned upon receiving it but it has never had the same kind of life as the original battery that came with the PowerBook, although it definitely runs cooler.
I didn't notice any issues running under Tiger and have only noticed that problems began under one of the Leopard updates, although not exactly sure which one it started under.
The issue seems to be largely with the system not going to sleep when on low battery, but instead, simply shutting itself down. I get the low battery warning, but if I just let it go, the system will eventually shut down without warning. It has occasionally shut down with about 20% battery life left on the power reading in the menu bar.
When I connect a power source and start the computer back up, the date has been reset, indicating that the machine has died completely.
Here's the really strange part. The last wireless network I was connected to seems to now be corrupt and I have to remove it from my Airport preferred networks and add it fresh. It's as if the password is not the same and it prompts me for the password again, it doesn't keep it saved and I have to enter it every time I connect to that network.
For the shut down before sleeping part and the clock resetting, is it just that the battery on the logic board needs to be replaced because it's dead?
On the shutting down before sleeping issue, is anyone else having this same problem?
As for the Airport corruption, does anyone have any ideas?

I am having the same problem - I have 20% battery and then the computer shuts downs and when I restart the date & time have been reset. However, I do not have the airport corruption issue. Anyone know what's going on? I tried to update my battery using the "PB Battery Updater" but that program quits unexpectedly. I'm not sure what else to try...

  • Strange Shutdowns

    Hi,
I have just purchased a MSI K7N2-Delta-ILSR motherboard and a 350 watt PSU. Here are my new specs:

    350 Watt PSU
    Amd Athlon 2000+

    Geforce 4 MX440
    Round Cables
    Suffient Cooling
My Cpu is at around 38 Degrees
The problem is my PC keeps getting the BSOD. It seems to happen if i stay inactive like if i leave my pc for 1 minute. Its very strange and i formatted again and it still does it. I think it might be the RAM, does anyone have any ideas?
    Right here the BSOD message:

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options like caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options and then select safe mode.

Here is the error message when windows started:

    c:\docume~71\james\locals\temp\WER1.tempdir.00\sysdata.xml
See if you can make any sense of that?

Almost all my BSOD errors were similar driver errors, but the cause was the power supply. It's just that when the ram read/write error occurred, that's what it was doing at the time. I was worried that my Kingston/K-Byte RAM combo was to blame, as neither is longer on the approved list.
After I 'scoped my supply and memory (not for the squeamish), I could see what the problem was. The square wave pulses that my memory was expecting looked to be somewhat saw-toothed (rounded on the leading edge), and there was a lot of RFI/EMI noise on it as well, both signs of an overdriven supply. Not enough voltage, and too much current plus noise.
The Antec PSU cleared it up, thankfully before it damaged my memory. Others have not been so lucky, and have had to replace both RAM and PSU, according to Anandtech's report that the majority of returned memory is blown up by bad/low power. I have no reason to doubt this, since the DEX VAX mainframe line was notorious for taking out memory arrays when the power went bad.
Granty's supply should be ok for what he's running, unless there's other hardware not listed, or if the 350W supply is not of quality manufacture, but I'm trying to make sure. It still could be a driver issue, but I feel it necessary to rule out any possible/probable hardware probs first.

  • K9N SLI - Harddrive shutdown (sleepmode) after reboot - PLZ HELP ME!

the sound comes only from my raid drives.
i had this problem since i got my computer for about 2weeks ago, BUT one of the harddrive i had about 4months and didnt have any problem with it using xp. its when i started to raid the problem appeared.
the sound is exactly like then i shutdown my computer. when i restart my system i can hear my drives "shutdown" and then to start again about 5 - 10 seconds later.
edit: this problem ONLY appears when i reboot my system, if i press the "reset" button my on computer the hard drives doesn't go to sleep mode.

  • Unwanted System shutdown after SSH logout

Hi, I am new to the forum and I can'r resolve by myself this problem:
I have a small server where I connect via SSH from internet.

    the system is Linux srv 3.18.6-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat Feb 7 08:59:29 CET 2015 i686 GNU/Linux
I looked at the log and the system appears to receive a shutdown command.
Here is the last log extract:

The system is a server only with remote console, no keyboard, no monitor.
Any idea where to look for to solve these unexpected shutdowns?
    Thank you.
    Giorgio

Friend, I feel for you. I have the same problem on two PPC machines. I have watched posts about this problem for about a year now, and I have yet to see anyone come close to a fix.
I'm going to tell you how we keep it from happening 97% of the time (on both our machines). It's really weird, but it works. When we're going to shut down, we open a few folders and let the machine calculate the sizes of the items inside. We use the Applications folder and the Utilities folder for this. Once the machine has shown the sizes of the items in the window, we close the window. Then, from the Apple Menu, we choose Shut Down (or Restart, if that's what we're doing). The dialogue window appears, asking to confirm that is what we want to do. Now, WAIT as it counts down. Click "OK" when the countdown hits 55 seconds remaining. I know it sounds goofy, but believe me, it works. If we do not follow this routine, the shutdown or restart will fail and we have to force quit the machine.
Now, we've been doing this for a long time - probably about a year. Since we started having to follow this silliness, we have installed a second hard drive in the desktop machine and also now use a portable FW HD with my laptop. On the laptop, I always eject the external HD before shutdown or restart. On the desktop machine, we simply open at least one big folder (usually Applications on a clone backup partition, and on the other partition just some big folder), let it calculate the sizes of the enclosed items, then close those folders. Following these actions, we use the previously described procedure.
Try it and let me know here if it works for you.
I know it sounds totally insane, but it works. It's a pain to do it every time, but it beats a forced shutdown and the chance of data corruption. I've given up on a solution; we'll probably replace these machines before there's a fix - judging from the lack of success other have with this problem.

  • Error while trying to duplicate a database

I've got the following problem with rman-duplicate (oracle 10gR2) (see also: [this thread|http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=4446855#4446855])

RMAN-06026: some targets not found - aborting restore
    - followed by the list of all datafiles
I've made a full backup of the target database right before the duplicate. Rman reports (list backup; crosscheck backup) the availability of all database backups with all its datafiles.
Unfortunately in my case the reported very strange "shutdown abort"-"startup" - workaround doesn't work.
Has anyone any other hints - or is it just a serious bug (which would prevent me from further time-wasting trials ...).

  • MacBook Pro did not shut down (hang)...

    Good Afternoon,
About 2 days ago I upgraded to Mac OS X Lion (clean install), and I haven't had any major problems so far in term of system freezes or missing user files. However, today when I shuted down my MacBook Pro it went to a white shutdown screen and showed the gray spinwheel. I waited while Mac it shuted down, the problem was that it didn't do so. After 1minute and 30 seconds I decided to hit  the power button to force shutdown my Mac. I did experienced this one time in SL. I don't know why this happened and the only thwo things that I did before shutdown was to browse the web in Safari watch Youtube videos and some Facebook and when I proceeded with shutdown all my programs were close and also uncheck the "resume" check box option in the shutdown dialog.
After booting back from that strange shutdown I checked the system logs and theres no reference of a improper shutdown whatsoever. I checked my Library file logs and there was no improper shutdown log either.
Has anyone also experienced this issue in OSX Lion?, also is my Mac OK?
    Thanks!

I think I found the pattern: Long sessions where Safari remains open. I will tomorrow do the same thing but rathern than unticking the "reopen windows when logging back in" option I will leave it alone if the error does not happens it means that Safari processes somehow not shutting down properly when the system is shutting down without remembering open windows. If the error happens anyway it would still point to safari but to long safari sessions.
Here's my System.log in both instances where failed shutdowns have occured:

Aug 16 17:10:20 Michaels-MacBook-Pro Software Update[482]: Layout still needs update after calling -[WebHTMLView layout].  WebHTMLView or one of its superclasses may have overridden -layout without calling super. Or, something may have dirtied layout in the middle of updating it.  Both are programming errors in Cocoa Autolayout.  The former is pretty likely to arise if some pre-Cocoa Autolayout class had a method called layout, but it should be fixed.

  • New 2012 Macbook 13" - Am I crazy or is this computer

Just 7 days ago I purchasesd a new MBP 13" (mid-2012) computer and right away experienced strange shutdown/startups at random.  I took it back and the Apple store said they didn't see the problem before, but they swapped it out for a new one with no questions asked.  Very kind.  So last night I start up my new machine.  Immediately update to Lion 10.7.4 and load my old Macbook apps and files onto the new machine.  It took longer than the last one I had problems with.  Thinking everything would be fine after already having returned one machine, I immediately noticed that the computer would not wake up in a timely fashion from sleep.  Then it went to sleep and didn't wake up at all!  What the heck is happening?  I called APLCARE and they told me to check disk utility and my HD came back "ok".  Then they told me to reinstall Lion, which I did.  They said it would take 1 hour.  It took 3.5.  I'm still experiencing sleep issues even after all this.  If anyone knows what it could be, I would really appreciate the help.  I must say, this is more of me venting than it is looking for immediate assistance, as I have a genius appointment an hour from now.  I just hope they can get this straightened out!
    Thanks,
    Ryan

Hopefuly things will get worked out.
    Best.

  • Strange icon during shutdown...

Does anyone else have a strange icon flash on the display for a fraction of a second during shutdown? I running 10.5.1 on my 15" MBP 2.16 Core Duo and have noticed a real weird icon that only shows up occasionally during shutdown. It usually blinks on and off too fast to really see what it is, but I think it is sort of like the symbol on the command key and has a red X across it. I don't have any issues with the MBP with the exception of some files that Disk Utility is having trouble with when I repair permissions which seems to take a long time. It gets to a point where it says time remaining is less than a minute, but keeps going and going for another 3-5 minutes after displaying this:
    Repairing permissions for “Macintosh HD”

Anyone seen this before or have any thoughts?

    Thanks for the tip.
I did as you suggested and the permissions issue is fully resolved. Never had an issue using the Software Update pane, but I'll file the in my overloaded brain for another time.
I haven't seen the strange icon during shutdown again, but I did identify it as the icon for a piece of software called KeyCue. It shows keyboard shortcuts for the active application by holding down the Command key for about 2 seconds.
    Thanks again!

  • G5 quad strange buggy behaviour (double startup and shutdown items)

    Hello,
I didn't know completely how to relate this in the subject matter, but my G5 quad is working, but has doubles of "sleep" "restart" and "shutdown" in the apple menu. As well there are strange boxes that appear, that i'm pretty sure are not the norm for the computer. Overall it just seems really buggy.
I have reset PRAM as well as doing the manual reset with the button by the RAM cards. I have tried taking out either pair of RAM cards but the machine will not start up when i do so. I think the software
I am running 10.4.6 on a machine dedicated to music recording (pro tools). I can do a reinstall, but wanted to get some opinions first, as it is pretty time consuming with all of the different music production software that i would have to reload.
Thanks for your time and any ideas<
    Ian

    Malcom,
Thank you so much! Lovely to know that it was one of the rare times in my mac life where it was a simple answer<g>
I was sure that some evil deity was living in my machine and torturing me--simply F5..

  • Strange Problems with Power Mac G5 - Shutdown, Date/Time, Mobile Me

    Hello All,
Need some help resolving recent issues with my Dual 1.8 GHz g5 (PPC).
I recently had my internal boot drive start falling, so I had it cloned onto a brand new drive. Did not reinstal system (do not have access to m original installers). Since then have been experiencing the following issues:
On starup, the auto update of date/time does not work. An error message pops up stating date is set to before 2001. If it doesn't fix itself in the first 30 seconds (sometimes it does) I go to sys prefs/date & time and wait a few seconds and it then updates correctly.
When I shutdown the computer doesn't make it all the way. It successfully shuts down the OS... screen goes blue to black as normal... but the actual machine stays on unless I keep the power button pressed to force it to shut down. If I don't the computer stays on (black screen... but the hardware still on, as if it were asleep) and then the fans go into overdrive within about five minutes.
Startup is long and goes right into aforementioned date/time issue.
Lastly, I noticed mobile me is not updating my iCal between this mac and my new MacBook pro. It used to work until all this started happening.
Otherwise the computer runs fine, no strange behavior in any applications, OS, etc.
Have not replaced internal G5 battey, so I will explore that. Any other ideas what might be going on?
    Thanks in advance,
    F

Probably the battery. The time being reset is a typical sign. Replace it before any more troubleshooting.
Check out things in Texas Mac Man's Battery, PRAM, PMU tutorial on the subject. His tutorial is dated (don't believe it even mentions G5's) but the info in it, except SMU not being included, still applies to most Macs. The SMU link is for a late G5 Tower. Early G5's use PMU reset, as shown in the tutorial. The battery for late G5 + G5 iMacs and earlier iMacs, Mac Minis and Intel Tower Macs is this one.
The clone could be an issue too, if it was made from a drive that was already having issues. Do the battery and we'll see what happens!

  • Sudden shutdown- then strange battery behavior?

About a week ago I was using my 2009 Macbook before I went to take an exam. When I left it had very little battery left (it has given me a warning) but I just shut the top and left, figuring it would go into Safe-Sleep. When I came back, I found that the fan was running very loudly and that the screen was dark. When I plugged in my MagSafe charger, it didn't recognize that it had been plugged in. In an attempt to prevent the fan from burning out, I took the battery out for awhile and then put it back in again... and the fan began to run again. I figured I would let it run for a little while and eventually the fan turned off and a while after that the computer turned on.
Ever since, I've been getting strange readings about my battery from the built-in indicator and my iStat Pro widget. When it's not plugged in, the built-in reader doesn't tell me how much battery is left, but instead lags and then tells me that it is plugged in and "Not Charging"
Right now iStat Pro is telling me that my battery is 29% charged when not plugged in but when I plug it in it tells me that I have 10 hours of charging remaining until I reach 100%.
I'll have this laptop for a year next week, it seems a little early for battery problems of this scale. I swear I haven't dropped it! Anyone have any ideas before I bring it in?

My iBook seems to take a long time (15 minutes) to calculate the battery charge.
A note on the lower right-hand of this page:

  • Strange electrical sounds and shutdowns

    1.Product Type: MSI P4N Sli XE -F (MS-7203)
    2.BIOS version: V1.3
    3.External VGA Type:PCIe XFX GF8600GT 256MB 620M
    4.CPU Type: Intel 3.2GHZ 641
    5.Memory Type: DDR2 533 (2GB)
6.Power Supply Type: 600w Raw Power
7.Operating System: Windows XP Pro sp 2 (all latest updates)
8.Problem Description: When the machine is under load I.E. gaming, there is a gradual build up of what seems to be electrical noise coming from the mainboard. I've tried changing cpu, graphics, memory and power supply but it makes no difference. If the computer is left off for a few hours and then turned on there is no noise but as soon as the computer does something intensive like gaming then the noise returns and will remain even when in bios.
I've run the settings in the bios to use default settings but nothing changes.
The computer has never been run in an overclocked mode but this problem has always been there and it always shutsdown when playing a game like World of warcraft with the games settings on maximum.
The shutdown can be done by using the 3DMark 05 benchmarking software.
I've looked on the mainboard for anything unusual and everthing seems fine visually. i had a damn good look.

You can try digging out which company is the main distributor for MSI in your country. Contact them directly on where you can RMA the board as your reseller is no longer around.
I've tried this already and when i phoned the company they said it's something that can't deal with themselves because i'm not a direct customer of theirs so it would be upto MSI to deal with directly. I explained what they had told me about getting in touch with a reseller but they insisted that it was a definately upto MSI as warranties after the first year are taken on by the manufacturor themselves as per the instruction booklet detailing warranties.
    Anyway, here's a further update.

I'm not sure as to what to do because my reseller is no longer trading as it was an independent business and is now closed and has been for some time.
I know msi provide a 3 year warranty on this product according to the manual so i'm unclear as to where to turn. I've had the mainboard, processor and memory tested at another local independent seller and they had told me that the processor and memory was fine but the board was at fault and is something they could not repair.
My question now is what do i do?
    MSI
    Hi,
Please send the mainboard for RMA. The normal procedure is to contact your reseller (the place you bought the board from) for repair/exchange. If the reseller for some reason like bankrupt cannot be contacted, then contact MSI distributor or MSI office near your place.

After reading your advise and contacting the nearest distributor to my address they told me that only a customer of themselves could return a product for an RMA.
They had told me to get back in touch with yourselves because only you could deal with my problem because the reseller from whom i bought the product is no longer trading.
How do i proceed from this point?
    Thank you.
Guess what happened next.............Nothing. Not a thing. I was just left stone cold with a board i could never use because it simply wouldn't work so i decided to step up my game a bit and forward all of this information to a pc games magazine called PCZone and within a day of contacting them i get this from MSI.
    MSI
    Hi,
Please go and contact ***@msicomputer.co.uk, they will deal with RMA issue for end user.

That person sent me a personal email stating that i send the board back with the first 3 letters of the RMA as the name of the manager and my case would be dealt with as high priority.
I think that it's amazing that it took outside intervention to get something done about my board which is still under warranty but i feel sorry for people who have had similar problems to me where a business or company that has folded or gone bankrupt has left people with faulty parts with no easy way of getting them rectified.  I wonder how many people have given up trying to resolve problems because the difficulty of getting a manufacturer like MSI to honour their warranties?
