Strange size of paper on PDF files

Firt : sorry for my poor english, i am french...
Well, i create a A4 page with Illustrator CS3. If i save it as a PDF file, i get a A4 PDF file, everything is Ok. But if i print it with Adobe Distiller 8 through the Ai dialog box with A4 selected for the size (and no resizing), i get a A4 PDF file with my artwork reduced at 50% in the center of the page...
I tested another Distiller print with XPress7 and a A4 page is OK, no problem.
It happens only with illustrator.
In the dialog box, if i dont choose A4 but "defined by the driver" - (i don't know how to translate that in english, let's say i dont select any size and let the driver manage this), i get a good A4 PDF with the right size of artwork...
What can i do ?

I found the solution : (not me in fact but another Mac user on another forum (Apple).
Well the culpit is a tiny file hidden in the system.
I give you the text i found :
" it appears to be a problem in the file located at:   /usr/libexec/cups/filter/pstops   If you copy that file from a working 10.5.4 installation then it should work. At least it does for me. Your mileage may vary, I'm not responsible, etc.   The easiest (and likely safest) way to do this is to download the 10.5.4 combo update from Apple.  http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1054comboupdate.html   And Pacifist:  http://www.charlessoft.com/   1) Mount the combo update DMG and open the .pkg file using Pacifist.  2) Navigate down to /usr/libexec/cups/filter/  3) click on pstops and hit "install" on the top left  4) enter your password  5) hit replace   That's it. Keep in mind I've only tested it on my main box, but I don't see why it shouldn't work for everyone else.   This likely will not break your install in case Apple comes out with a fix. If you're worried then just backup your 10.5.5 pstops file. (hit Command-G, enter /usr/libexec/cups/filter/ and copy the pstops file somewhere safe (or just rename a copy in the current location). You _may_ have to repair your permissions. "
In fact i just used Onyx to see the invisible files of the system and i did copy pstops from an old system archive to my 10.5.5 AND IT WORKS !
No more problem.

Is there a Maximum file size limit when combining pdf files

I am trying to combine files 8 PDF files created with i Explore using Acrobat XI Standard, the process is completed but when opening the file not all 8 individual files have been combined only the first two have been combined, the process shows all eight being read and combined.
I can open and view each of the original 8 individual files and read the content without any issue, the largest of the eight files is 15,559kb and the smallest is 9,435kb
if anyone can assist that would be most appreciated

This should not have happened as there is no maximum file size limit when combining PDFs.
Please let me know if there are some password protected PDFs also?
Also, I would suggest you to choose 'Repair Acrobat Installation' option from the Help menu.

How do I reduce the size of a scanned PDF file?

I scanned a document from my HP Printer to a thumb drive. The document is too large to email. I need to reduce the size to make it possible to email it. I can't find anything in the Tutorials or Manual on how to do that. Does anyone know?

Save As Other>Reduce PDF File or Optimize PDF. The latter gives more control. The basic process for a scanned PDF is to reduce the pixel resolution that both of these process try to do. Sometimes the file actually gets bigger because of the processing (can't explain that). Also, when you save use Save As, not Save. Save retains any changes that are made.
You might also consider doing OCR with the ClearScan option (the searchable formats will not reduce size), but then have to deal with potential error corrections in the OCR.
Hopefully I have not confused the issue with the side comments.

What are the best practices for average size of an Adobe PDF file on a Web Server to be downloaded?

We know at a certain point, an extremely large file can be slow in downloading/accessing from a web site, and lessens the end-user's experience. How large is too large? What is a good average or suggested size for Adobe PDF files in general?

I'm sure it varies depending on one's opinion but we have a policy that they should be under 1- 1.5MB. This isn't always posible of course. Our PDF's are mostly informational and contain little or no graphics.
I would say that it greatly depends on the PDF. If you get up over that size, you should do your best to optimize it for your users. Sometimes you can only do so much.

Strange size change when saving ai file as jpeg

Greetings all!
I have a quick question (I believe!). I have a couple of images that I am saving as jpeg files. So, I have noted that today only (it worked fine yesterday) when I go to save the file to web, the size of the image changes from 400 px high to 430 px high. I didn't select anything to make each file change like that. There is a white area at the top of the image (which isn't good 4 my image). When I reduce the size of the jpeg - it reduces the image (so the white area remains).
Does anyone have a suggestion? This has happened with more than one image.

If you have images to convert to jpg, use photoshop instead.
If the white are on top is 30 pixels, then you must have a stray point in your document or something that is not visible, but adds to the bounding box of your image. Do a Command Y in illustrator to see if something is there. Also if you are placing images into Illustrator, your original image may have a clipping path or something that is adding to your bounding box.

Reducing PDF File Size Using Preview

Hi All,
Trying to reduce the size of a large pdf file. "Quartz Filter" pick in Preview (Snow Leopard) is no longer available in Lion.
Tried making new filter in ColorSync Utility and applying, but file size is still not reducing, in fact it increases. Any advise out there?

My pdf-files on my Cloud Drive (at one.com) does not open with Acrobat Reader 10.3. The message I get i that the document is emty 0 kB but thats not true. My iPad is using version iOS 6.0. Why is it like that and what can I do to get it right?

I have to login to my own CloudDrive at one.com using my app "One.com for
iPad". In the CloudDrive, I have a (standard Windows) folder containing
documents, pictures, music, etc including a couple of pdf-files, some
jpeg-files av a ppt-file. I open the file by clicking on it and for the
pdf-file, I select the app Adobe Reader to open the file. The ppt and jpeg
files open automatically (don't have to chose any app) when I click on them.
The app starts to download the pdf-file but I only get a message window
telling me that "the document is empty (0 kb)" and have to click OK to
proceed. The pdf-file is an ordinary one, created by CutePDF Professional
version 3.64.
One strange thing is that one pdf-file was opened correct once.

Can't open pdf-file

Hi. I asume I have to write in English, but that is not easy, but I will try. I am a student who write my masterpaper. During my work I had all the time searched on the internett other papers. Is has been no problem to open the paper as pdf-file. But suddenly I can not do that anymore, and I get following message: Internet exolorer is not working. And then this message: windows looks for solution, and finely Internett is not working.
It is not internett exploring who is the problem.
Is not the file, who is the problem (becase on others pc, is ok)
It has to be Adobe Reader who has the problem. I have tried to reinstall adobe Reader, and restarted my computer, but that is not helping.
However, if I choose the option "fast-showing", the file is opening in google. But that option is not good enough, because I can not copy from it, as I have done when the file is opening as pdf file.
I have been in touch with microsoft answer, but every advice they have given me has not helped.
I hope you have advice to me, tips? What can I do?
If you have a answer to me, I hope you can write "easy" english, so I understand. If that is possible? Maybe whitout so many difficult words/terms. And if you can help, you can make the answer like this:

Just a few items, some from an academic viewpoint.
You mention copying from papers. From an academic viewpoint, you need to be sure you get permission to use the information and credit it accordingly. That is very important where I work, and failure could result in being thrown out of the university.
That said, you have indicated problems opening the files. Did you upgrade your IE? The newest IE does not work well with Adobe products, though I think the latest Reader has rectified that problem. My comments on Reader may be off -- this is not the Reader forum (Reader is in a different forum given at the top right of this forum).
Typically you only need to do a repair in Reader when there are problems. I assume this is in Help>Repair. The uninstall/reinstall step is typically a last resort. If you do an uninstall/reinstall, then be sure to remove the Reader folder completely before the reinstall. It is also good to run a registry cleaner before the reinstall (MS used to have one -- took it off their site, there is one for Acrobat from Adobe, and another typically one is CCleaner).
As a work around, right click on the PDF and save it. Then open it directly in Reader. I am assuming this is happening for all PDFs and not just selected ones.
Note: for translation issues, I often use Yahoo's Babel. There are many translation services on line for simple things like this message that use copy and paste. I have used them before for posts in other languages.

Compressing PDF files in Finder - Files are no smaller after compression!

I have PDF portfolio files (Acrobat 9) that include images (jpegs and PNGs)and PDFs. I want to compress them so i can email them. When i ctrl click them and select 'compress' the resulting .zip file is exactly the same size as the original PDF file! Can anyone explain why?!
Is it not possible to create compressed zip files from PDFs containing multiple files / types?
FYI, i have made the PDFs themselves as small as possible within Acrobat before trying to compress them, compressing is a last resort!

Thanks. I've reduced the image sizes to what i think is the minimum for good viewing, but the total PDF size is still too big for emialing (about 25mb). Is there any alternative to resizing the images (and other files) again and making the tottal PDF size smaller?

Problems printing envelope from pdf file with logo & return address.

I have the 6310 All-In-One Printer. I am experiencing major problems printing envelopes (standard size, #10) from a pdf file that is setup with a business logo, name , and address. First of all, the User Guide on page 63 directs you to load the envelope with the flaps up and on the left. This prints out return address in the lower right corner of the envelope front. I have insert the envelope opposite to the User Guide to get the information printed in the correct location, the upper left corner.
Bigger problem - The logo, which is placed to the left of the business name and address will NOT print out. My preview printer window shows the logo, but it will not print. I cannot figure out what I am doing wrong.
Suggestions???

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Do you want to add them so they can be read? If so you can use the method used in this demo page: Scrolling Text Box. It's good for pdf files with more than one page.
If you want a pdf file for downloading by visitors zip the pdf file in the Finder

and add a hyperlink on your page using the Inspector/Link/Hyperlink pane selecting link to +A file+. That will download that zipped pdf file when the hyperlink is selected.

Are you trying to Print to PDF or are you trying to Print a PDF file to a physical printer?
