Strange Sony Super Drive

The Sony super drive that came in my Mac Pro started giving me problems. It would not read Disks (CD's or DVD's) that it wrote. The Pioneer DVD drive that I have in the lower bay would read them just fine though. I have a second hard drive installed that I use for Windows Vista with Boot Camp. While I was running Vista today I noticed that all the DVD movies that I made on the Mac worked in the Sony DVD drive while I was in Vista, but could not be read when I was booted up in Mac OS 10.5.5. I have had Sony Super drives in other Mac's too and they all gave me grief. After a while they wouldn't read disks that they wrote. I assumed that Sony drives just were not very good. That is up until now. I pulled the Sony drive from the Mac Pro and pulled a Lite-On drive from a PC that I have and switched them. The Sony drive works just fine in the PC and the Lite-On drive works fine in the Mac Pro. I have come to the conclusion that there was nothing wrong with the Sony drive and there must be something wrong with the drivers supplied with 10.5.5. Has any one else had a problem with their Sony Super Drive not reading disks the it writes and found a way to fix it?

Other than generic IDE drivers in the OS I doubt there are drivers for the drive or any DVD drive.
A decent internal Pioneer drive costs about $40. They can be swapped in and out in 10 minutes. Applecare/Apple Store will take all day.
Buy a drive.

Try eBay. You do occasionally see that old model advertised there.

  • DVD super drive problem-does not eject

am facing strange problem with my DVD super drive. It does not eject when idle for some time and when its empty. I have a dual core Mac Pro with snow leapord OS. I have replaced it, updated the OS.. nothing fixes the issue.
it only ejects when I restart the mac pro.
Please help as it does not respond to eject key on keyboard also.
    Thanx in advance.

If nothing else works for you, when you hear sound of drive trying to open after pressing keyboard eject button, strike the box of mac pro on both sides of the drawer with clenched fists.
I have been doing this for years.

  • Compare DVD-R burn quality by internal Super Drive to External DVD-R burner

Has anyone compared the video 'quality' of a DVD-R burned using the internal Super Drive
on my MacBook Pro (Windows 8.1 64 bit) to the same DVD-R burned using a standalone
Sony DVD-R Recorder / player?  One would think the quality would be slightly better using
a standard external DVD-R disc burner.

I see no difference in the video quality.  Although I use a different external burner than your brand.  It's possible some external burners are better than the optical drives on a MacBook Pro or vice versa.

  • Since my external CD, DVD burner is going, which second internal super drive to buy for my MacPro?

Since my external CD, DVD burner is going, which second internal super drive should I buy for my MacPro?
Thank you for your time and patients.

    Apple doesn't support Blu-ray
    <http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/14/steve-jobs-calls-blu-ray-a-bag-of-hurt/>
    and (from hardmac.com):
"Steve did not change his mind and still think that BD DRM are just inacceptable for mass and consumer market due to restrictions that make advantages look like non competitive. He admitted that retrospectively he feels ashamed that Apple’s name is associated to Blu-ray, as he thinks that BD supporting associations look today more like M*fia than anything else. Concerning authoring on Blu-ray, it seems impossible to provide software supporting such format for consumer market. In addition to DRM, here it is the cost of licenses that slow down the entire process; one would have to start paying 3,000 USD to AACS, then 80,000 USD to Sony, 40,000 USD to Sonic, etc. HE considers the Blu-ray as a “bag of hurt”."
    (* = a  The full M word is rejected.)
    but there is player software
MCE includes a trial version of Blu-ray player software with their drive.  (It's out of date but will update to the current version.)

It works fine on my Mac Pro.  Enable Deinterlacing and set it to Auto in its Video preference.

DvD will not mount but cd-r will When I install the the disc into the super drive the format box (disc utilities) comes up which is not the same box that comes up when installing a cd-r.  I check the priference settings under general and it is set to show on the desk top.

  • Super Drive Not Functioning. Hardware? Software?

CDs will not open. When I try a DVD I get a message that says: Supported Disc Not Available. I first noticed a problem when my DiskWarrior startup disc would not open for a rebuild. I tried the Tiger Install DVD to access the disk utility but nothing happened there either. Nothing mounts. This is distressing since the nearest Apple Store is about 50 miles away. Any ideas anybody? Any other information that might be required to hopefully clear this up I will gladly furnish. Thanks. Jack

I have been having an intermittent problem with my super drive on an iMac G4 (1 GHz, 10.5.8, Pioneer DVR 105). Several months ago, it would not recognize a music CD (Next to Normal). I thought it was a problem with the disk, but I had the same difficulty with a replacement. Those disks worked in two other Macs in the house as well as regular CD and DVD players. Now, it won't read my new copy of Turbo Tax 2009. The drive just whirrs and chugs for 30-45 seconds then ejects the disk. Everything else plays fine (especially DVDs). What's really strange is that I went back to my TurboTax disk from last year (which installed fine then), and it wouldn't read that either. I have repaired permissions, zapped the PRAM (but not reset the PMU), and had the computer shut down dozens of times between tries. It seems something is causing just these disks not to be read correctly. I haven't tried a cleaner, but it seems like this is solely a problem in the drive itself. Any other suggestions?

  • Super drive does not stay close

I was using my super drive and suddenly it did not want to stay close, every time I put a disc or without it and close it stays close a few seconds then opens up and if I try to close, closes just for a few seconds then opens up again.
I have a sony dvd RW DW-Q28A. Does the super drive is broken? or can be fixed.
    Thanks
    Jose

Try removing everything from your USB connectors except Apple keyboard / Apple mouse.

  • Super drive stops seeing items on the CD

My super drive on my dual 2ghz power pc has been acting strangely.
I have a number of DVDs from Digital Juice with images and .movs on them. When reading from those DVDs, after a time files start disappearing from the list of files... The system no longer seems to see them... This even happens in the middle of copying files to my hard drive! I don't know if this happens with other disks, I've not seen it before.
Any thoughts on what could cause this and how to fix it?
    g5 dual 2 ghz w/ 2 gb ram   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hi 7mon, welcome to Apple Discussions.
Have you tried to install XP SP1 by mistake? This would cause something very similar to what you describe.
Try clearing the pram by booting while holding down appleoption+pr until you have heard 3 chimes. Then hold down 'C' in the hope of booting from the optical drive. Formatting the drive prior to re-install may (according to others on here) not clear all the work done by BootCamp. Try the erase free space option, this might help, although it adds to the time taken a lot.
Let us know if anything helps.
    Karn.

  • Sony DVD Drive Problems

At our school we have a number of iMacs (flat screen with round base) of varying varieties. We've found a problem with a select number of them after upgrading the software from 10.3 to 10.4 (Tiger). 1ghz and 1.25ghz models (later iMacs)
All of our iMacs with Sony DVD Combo or Super drives no longer recognize DVD's - commercial video or data. Those iMacs with Pioneer Combo or Super drives still work just fine.
When a DVD is put in the Sony machines - nothing happens and it is ejected about 45 seconds later. Preferences are set to run DVD Player. When we start DVD player before hand and insert a DVD, clicking Title or Menu options give the "no available disk" message.
We've tried trashing the com.apple.DVDPLAYER.plist file and restarting the machine (worked in another discussion thread - no player brand mentioned - Sony?) this made no difference.
Any info on this? The upgrades appear to have rendered these Sony DVD players just a CD player (in function - About This Mac shows them as DVD RW's, etc.) Again, this only affected those iMacs with the Sony brand drives, and we don't expect we had 14 DVD drives go bad in one weekend.
    Thanks for any info.
    - Tom

    HI Tom,
In your original post you indicated you upgraded to 10.4 Make sure every single iMac has the same version number. Click the Apple logo top left in your Desktop, then click, "About This Mac". When the pane opens the Mac OS X version numbers will be displayed. They need to all be at: 10.4.11
And... make sure all the possible Software Updates have been done.
After I did the 10.4.11 update, I couldn't use Sony media to burn CD or DVD on my Macs. Specialist at a nearby Apple store suggested I used Verbatim. Sure enough... works like a charm. For whatever reason, the most recent 10.4.11 version just doesn't like Sony and you aren't the only Mac user experiencing this issue.
" Again, this only affected those iMacs with the Sony brand drives, and we don't expect we had 14 DVD drives go bad in one weekend." I hope you mean DVD as in disks not hard drives ????
Something else to try. Open Disk Utility from the Applications/Utilities folder. Insert one of the DVD's and see if Disk Utility sees it in the panel on the left.
And... My CD or DVD doesn't appear on my desktop
If you insert a disc into your optical drive and nothing seems to happen, try the following:
Open a Finder window to see if the disc appears there. If it does, your Finder preferences are set not to show CDs and DVDs on the desktop.
To change this setting, choose Finder > Preferences, click General, and select the "CDs, DVDs, and iPods" checkbox.
Check your CD & DVD preferences by choosing Apple menu > System Preferences and clicking CDs & DVDs. If you've set the computer to ignore a CD or DVD when it's inserted, you won't see your disc on the desktop or in a Finder window. Change the appropriate setting to open the Finder when a disc is inserted.
One last thought. DVD's and CD's... all it takes is a thumbprint and the laser can't read the disk. Try cleaning the disks and see if that makes a difference. You'd be surprised. Here's tips on how to do that: http://www.ehow.com/how2049991clean-dvd.html

  • USB external Super Drive not recognized by iMac

Bought a new USB external Super Drive a few days ago (from Apple shop).
Plugged into my iMac 21.5", late 2013, and the iMac does not seem to want to recognise it.
Checked Finder and necessary boxes ticked up to show on Desktop, also does not show through remote devices.
Any help would be appreciated. Not a techie and 90 miles from my Apple shop. Not even sure I have filled the dam request in correctly (sorry).

    <Subject Edited by Host>

Oddjob, the optical drive itself never shows up on the desktop,. What happens when you insert a disc? If a disc doesn't show up first check your connection. Try resetting the SMC Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple Support and PRAM How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
There's also the possibility that the drive is bad.

  • A DVD external super drive on a Macbook-pro 15', any chance to work?

Hey! I bought a macbook-pro 15’ in 2009 which does generally well. Nevertheless it has a problem concerning the DVD internal drive. It doesn’t read   anymore and I have tried to clean with no effect. Few days ago I bought an external USB super drive from Apple store. I did so because I did not like to give my computer back for service, when I need it all the time for my work. I thought with that I would have solved my problem. Now I realized that things are not so easy, I must have made a mistake. Macbook-pro 15’ is not supposed to be connected to an external USB super drive. Can I still do something to make it work? Thanks

Apple designs external Superdrive to only work with computers that shipped without an optical frive. Why don't you save yourself much grief & return it. Then purchase any USB drive you want, just not a Superdrive. Thousands on the market & they will work just fine with your computer.

  • Super drive won't recognize audio CDs but will burn

Anything I can do about this?
When Audio CDs are inserted I will hear the drive attempting to load through several cycles then spit it out. Tried multiple CDs and CDs do work in CD player. ALL are original audio CDs not copies, cloned or burned. ALL are clean.
BLANK CDs will seat and allow me to burn through iTunes.
ALL DVDs load and play fine.
I feel like this suddenly happened but can't remember the last time I inserted an audio CD. I completely reformated (clean install) my HD last Thanksgiving, updated all drivers and programs I could find. (not sure about firmware for super drive but I think I found it was the lastest) I swear the CD ROM worked.
Got a new iPod at Christmas and it works fine. Itunes works fine!
Original Mac Mini and updated SuperDrive..... Info here:
I replaced original CD ROM drive with Super Drive about 4 years ago. There has never been a hardware issue. Clean install fixed random CD burn problem.
    Super Drive:
    PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K06:
    Model: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K06
    Revision: 1.01
    Detachable Drive: No

    Machine Name: Mac mini
    Machine Model: PowerMac10,1

    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 1.42 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 1 GB
    Bus Speed: 167 MHz

    Ditto for like 2 years.
I have the exact! same problem. A lot of people confuse similar drive problems with ours when diagnosing.
Here's what I have found out, although after 2 years, I haven't been able to completely fix it.
Something related to my login is corrupt or missing. If I log in under my wife's login, and insert the audio cd, everything is perfect. Then if I switch back to my login, everything is perfect for again. However every cd must still be inserted under her login.
I really with this additional post will help somebody who has had this actually answer. It isn't a drive problem, or itunes problem.... and clearly a complete re install of osx isn't necessary.
