Strange Sound Issue Since 10.5.6

Hey everyone,
This thread here (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1454444&tstart=1) has the same problem...but I don't believe my sound card is busted, as I hear the gong/chime sound when turning on my Powerbook.
In summary:
When I hit the volume buttons on the keyboard (F3, F4, F5) the sound control icon shows up on the screen, with all the boxes white (indicating full volume), but beneath them is a "not allowed" icon - circle with a diagonal line through it, like Ghostbusters without the ghost. I can't click on anything in Sound Preferences (sound volume shows at full, and I can't click on the sound bar or the mute button).
Any suggestions would be helpful! It seems like this has started ever since I updated to 10.5.6, and I don't really know how to roll my machine back as this is my first Mac.
Thanks everyone!

Odd. I have had the exact problem described on Feb. 10: no sound output or input device detected, controls disabled, but volume sliders at "full" and everything grayed out. I restarted my computer, hoping it was just a glitch, but it didn't help.
This discussion prompted me to check my keyboard backlight keys, where I discovered that they were also disabled. Followed the Audio MIDI setup link, but the setup assistant could not detect audio in or out devices, so I couldn't set anything.
Here's where it gets interesting (to me): the support article got me thinking about AU stuff (audio units) used by 3rd party software. I had recently moved (not deleted, fortunately) the Finale GPO folder from its default location. I had planned to delete it after making sure it wasn't needed by anything. On a hunch, I found the folder and put it back where it is supposed to be. Restarted, and HEY, my sound and keyboard backlight controls work again.
Weird.
I guess I need that GPO folder after all. Now, if I can figure out why Garage Band thinks the GPO serial number is incorrect...but that's off-topic.

  • Strange sound issue with my Satelite U300

I've got a strange sound problem with my laptop.
I have XP pro + SP3 (downgraded from Vista to XP)
Couple week ago, a reinstall XP, because I thought it could solve my problem. But...nothing.
This is a problem: When I turning my laptop on, it gives me a message, "warning, cannot access volume control". When I check device manager, the only yellow question mark is bout PCI memory controller and there is no more unrecognized devices founded.
In Sound, video and game controller - Realtek High definition Audio is just missing.
Usually , then everything is ok, in "Device manager - Sound, video and game controller " I have - Audio Codecs, Legacy Audio drivers, Legacy Video CApture Devices, Media Control Devices,
Video codecs, Realtek High definition Audio. But then sound is missing, the "Realtek High definition Audio" is also missing.
Computers restart doesn't help. Even, when I uninstall Realtek sound drivers from "Add and remove.." and install it freshly, it also doesn't help. I tried to update drivers - nothing..
But, there is one strange thing: When a turning my laptop on couples hours later, or even next day (for exmpl) everything is ok. Sound works. And I can understand why....
All drivers downloaded from Toshiba. BIOS is being updated.
Maybe somebody know how to solve this problem? Any solutions?

    Hello
This issue has been brought up on this forum several times under other topic headings. Look under Audio Driver Missing, for instance. I have had this exact problem since purchasing my Toshiba notebook more than a year ago. Toshiba tech support is useless - and you're right that BIOS updates or changes make no difference, at least so far. The other ideas or replies given so far on this forum also don't solve the problem. Unfortunately for now I think you have to live with it, until someone spends the time to figure out what is really going on. I am curious if it is a Toshiba problem, a Realtek problem, or a Vista / compatibility issue.
I have two suggestions, which aren't fixes, but can help get your sound back when it disappears:
    1. Restart several times, not just once. Sometimes it works.
    2. Try the System Restore function. This used to work for me, until I updated the BIOS and now it no longer helps with this issue!
Make sure you post a solution if you figure it out!

  • Strange sound issue on iPad2

my mom is having odd sound issues on her iPad 2 that i was able to somewhat fix. and it goes from fixed back to broken o.O
i thought it was interesting and worth mentioning, in case this happens to anyone else.
her iPad 2 is up to date on the latest iOS (5.0.1) and the issue occured while she was watching a video in YouTube. sound is totally off in all apps. in Settings>General under 'use side switch to' it is set to 'mute'. when going to Settings>General>Sounds the volume control for ringers will work and cause the ringtone to play, so it seems the speaker itself is fine. however it will only work there and for that short time. afterward sound will continue to remain off. the volume control on the side of the unit will bring up the on screen speaker icon, except it doesnt show the bar that usually goes up and down with the volume. and sometimes at the top of the grey box it will say 'sound effects'. ive also tried switching the mute on and off which changes nothing.
the one thing ive found that changes anything is the multi tasking bar volume control (double clicking the home button and then sliding all the way to the left, where it shows a screen orientation lock, brightness slider and a volume control bar). now the volume control bar is unfilled and doesnt show the dot that you can slide up and down to change the volume. however when i plug the iPad 2 into a computer (any computer seems to cause this) the volume control bar will suddenly fill and the dot will appear. now suddenly sound works in all apps and will change with the side control again as normal.
now heres where it gets even weirder!!!
sometimes when unplugging the iPad 2, after a short while volume will slowly fade out and be unresponsive again. the side buttons stop working and the volume control in the multi tasking bar will be unfilled and unresponsive. repeatedly plugging it in, going back to the multi tasking bar volume control and unplugging will eventually bring volume back. a couple times ive gotten volume to stay on and the volume bar to stay responsive by unplugging it while im in the multi tasking bar. but sometimes this is not the case.
for the record, ive tried 'turning it off and on again' and resetting all settings and erasing all content and settings (both with starting up from a back up on iCloud and PC, and starting up as a new iPad). ive used two different laptops, one with Windows Vista and one with Windows 7. the iPad is synced with one laptop but aside from using iTunes to back it up and for charging, ive not made any changes to the iPad using these devices. during the entire duration of my attempts to fix it, the iPad has been on no lower than 80% power. ive also called Apple and discussed this with an Apple Care representative. who suggested all the same things id already done, and walked me through all the fixes to make sure i didnt skip anything.
hopefully and most probable is that its just an issue with iOS 5.0.1. i also have an iPad 2 thats up to date with 5.0.1 and ive not had this issue, YET.
i just thought it would be beneficial to the community to share this issue and get word out that this is happening. i would like to hear everyones thoughts on this issue and if this has happened to anyone else. the Apple Representative that i spoke to had not heard of or had to deal with this issue so it sounds like its rather new or rare. though she did mention that this is not normal behavior for the device and might be a software issue.
id like to conclude with my love for Apple, and how user friendly iDevices are in general. ive had iPods from the very first generation and all of them still work (though the older ones cant be updated past a certain iOS). the few issues ive ever had were easily fixed with a visit to the Apple Store or searching on the Apple Support Communities. so as with before, i will remain positive and look forward to a bug fix in the next update.
-thanks in advanced for reading, and any comments

Have you got notifications muted ? Only notifications (including games) get muted, so the iPod and Videos apps, and headphones, still get sound.
Depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (mute or rotation lock), then you can mute notifications by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad, or via the taskbar : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and it's the icon far left; press home again to exit the taskbar. The function that isn't on the side switch is set via the taskbar instead : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4085

  • [Solved] Strange sound issue

I finally got around to trying out Arch, and I'm having a strange issue with sound. When I try to play videos off the Internet as my normal (non-root) user, the video plays, but no sound comes out of the speakers. If I log in as root and try to play the same video, the sound works perfectly. I have not experienced this on any other distros.
Since I am a strict follower of the "don't run as root" rule, I'd like to know if there are any settings/config files I can check to see what the issue may be.
    Additional details:
-Using alsa, it has always worked perfectly for me in the past
    -alsamixer works as root
    -alsamixer as normal users says:
cannot open mixer: No such file or directory
-lspci entry for my sound device:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)
-I have already seen the Alsa setup page on the wiki and added the blacklist line to modprobe.conf, but there is no "external amplifier" listed in alsamixer
    -alsaconf seems non-existent
-I have already tried "modprobe -rv snd-hda-intel && sleep 5 && modprobe snd-hda-intel" as root
EDIT: I have not yet tried playing any local videos or sound files, though I can try this later when I have some extra time.

    I am now ;-)
I've got sound now that I am. I'm used to having the distro installer setting up my default account for me. Although I should know to check the groups, since I have had to setup custom users before ;-)

  • Strange client issue since updating to Server 10.6.6

We updated our Server to 10.6.6 last weekend. Since then our managed clients have been exhibiting strange network login behavior. We manage our mac laptops via groups in Workgroup manager and our OD is bound to AD.
    Example of issue:
    - client computer is set to auto logon with password in the client system preferences with an Active Directory account. When the user goes to browse the network they automatically get logged on to volumes. Logging out of the server by dragging volume to trash does not rectify as browsing the network produces the same results. When logging off of the network, the next time the network is browsed the server should have to be logged on to again, but is not. If I disable autologon, the same issue exists. If I then log on with a different network account, accessing network volumes acts correctly and I am prompted for a username and password. This is happening on a couple of hundred machines

  • Sound issues since 10.5.2 update

Since the update I've lost all sound in Xp running in Parallels sound is also gone from Mac mail & trash.
    Other areas maybe too.
Volume control stuck and can't be moved also.
Anyway I've discovered if I create another administrator account and log in sound and volume control work. (not sure about Parallels though but I think it should)
So it looks like to me that the update has damaged the account somehow. Is that possible.
Is there a way to transfer all my programs and files to this new account without any reinstalling?
Would I have to install all my programs again?
Is this the correct way to solve this problem?
New to Mac's (one week) so please keep it simple.

  • Strange Typing issue since latest OS X update

I cannot type in any finder window since updating to 10.5.7
I can copy and paste, but I can't type. I can type on the desktop and in spotlight, but once I open the spotlight window (view all results) or open a finder window, the keyboard keys stop functioning.
Is anyone else experiencing this? What could be causing this. I've tried a wired white Pro Apple Keyboard (I use the wireless white Pro Apple Keyboard) but it didn't fix the issue either.

  • Sound issues since leopard

I recently upgraded to Leopard and now when operating my Echo Audiofire 2 (firewire sound card) it often distorts horribly.
Anyone have any insight regarding fire wire audio issues?
    Thanks.

I have no insight, but I feel your pain. I'm having MAJOR issues with my Audiofire 12 in Leopard. Sometimes it works fine, sometimes when trying to start audio (for 10 channels), it takes down the OS with a hard crash. There were no such problems in Tiger.
The resulting crash reports seem to indicate something amiss in coreaudio firewire. Echo Audio tech support is, fo far, pointing the finger at Cuppertino and is supposedly working with Apple. Apple has multiple crash reports put together by a small utility I was sent by Apple tech support, but I have had no feedback for about a week now.
In the meantime I'm (mostly) dead in the water, but don't want to go back to 10.4 yet because I need the full 64-bit capability of Leopard.
If you haven't been in touch with Echo, send them a trouble report. They seem to think I'm the only person having any kind of problem with Audiofire devices in Leopard.

  • Help! red light from headphone jack and strange sound issues!

Help! I use my baby for listening to music and watching DVDs almost constantly when I'm working, and just the other day it started doing something really odd whenever I start doing something that involves sound!
If I'm listening to a song, watching a DVD, playing a game, whatever, as long as it involves sound it does this. What happens is, it'll be fine for up to a minute, and then it starts making this staticky skipping noise and losing the tracking on whatever it is I'm doing (game, song, DVD, etc.). This happens whether I've got headphones or speakers plugged in, or I'm using the laptop speakers. Also, a red light flashes from INSIDE the headphone jack with every staticky noise.
Everything else works fine. The problem doesn't appear as long as I'm not doing anything using sound, and it goes away about a minute after I stop using sound when it appears. It just started doing this yesterday, which was an entirely uneventful day and no different from normal. I traveled, but the laptop stayed in its case the whole time and didn't get dropped or jostled or anything.
I depend on my music to keep me sane! I can use my iPod for now, but I've got finals coming up and I need to use music while I study! HELP!

if the red light is flashing at the output, it means that the computer is trying to output a digital optical signal.. which would explain why your audio is cutting in and out, cos it's flipping randomly between digital out and built in speaker, which means the speaker is being intermittently muted.
the reason for this is that the sensor in your audio output port is dodgy. this sensor is supposed to detect when you have a digital optical cable connected, and yours seems to just be going a bit nuts. fraid the only way to get it properly sorted is to take it in for a service.

  • Strange sound distortion since update (but only some files and Bluetooth)

    Hello Community!
My Xperia Z1 compact got updated to Lollipop (14.5.A.0.242) this morning. Moreover, the Walkman got updated to 8.5.A.3.3. From then onwards, some music files are distorted when played with Walkman, but only when played via Bluetooth.
This does not happen when played with another player (tested with VLC app). It seems to be also restricted to a special file type. Nearly all my music is stored with AAC. The files that have the problem are however only the AAC files that use the profile HE-AAC (AAC+ i.e. with SBR). If I remember it correctly, I created these files with Winamp.
Could you please look into this problem? I like the Walkman player more than Google Music or VLC and don't want to convert all my HE-AAC music to something else.
If you need any more information, do not hesitate to ask. Best regards and thanks in advance,
    Mattes

  • Sound issues in iOS6

I'm having random sound issues since upgrading iPhone to iOS6. For instance, after using iMessage I will sleep the phone without exiting iMessage. 5 mins later I will have messages sent to me but there were no sound notifications indicating such. Only if I exit iMessage prior to sleeping the phone will I hear notifications of new texts or iMessages.   Also, random sounds like the swoosh when sending an email will mute randomly. I have to shut the phone off and restart before it works again.    Why is this happening?

If you have a iMessage open and into a message, normally it will not sound.  I think it is because you already have it open and in it.  That is what I have noticed.

  • Intermittent Sound Issues - HP Pavillion dv6700 Entertainment Laptop

    Hi,
I have a HP Pavillion dv6700 Entertainment Laptop running Windows Vista 32bit Home Premium and have been running into some strange sound issues first.
First, on occassion when I start my laptop I will get a "No Audio Output Device Installed" Message, and no sound controllers show up in the device manager.  Strangely, sometimes if I restart the laptop or put it into hibernation and bring it back, the output device will again work.
Also, when it is working I am experiencing other strange issues.  Often, sound will work only through headphones, and not through the built in Altec Lansing speakers.  Other times, even with the headphones plugged in, I only get sound through the speakers.  And sometimes, no sound through either, even though the computer at this point is showing a working audio device.
Lastly, when the sound does work through the speakers, it is normally crackling and distorted - it doesn't sound right at all.
The sound device installed on the computer is Contextant Smart Audio 221 (At least when it chooses to be working...)
I hope there is a solution to this problem, thank you very much for any support!
Message Edited by Holte2005 on 05-12-2009 02:52 PM

I also have a HP Pavillion laptop, with Windows Vista..  I am having sound issues, but not the same ones..  mine often displays the volume bar on the screen, clicking like I'm turning it up or down.. I can't get it to stop or go away.. I usually have to reboot and most of the time it stops, until the next time I open the laptop.  Also, when it's not doing this, I can't control my volume from the touch pad volume control at the top of my keyboard.  I thought maybe it was just damaged because it seems to have some scratches in that area where the top connects when closed, but I didn't think it made sense that rebooting will stop this, even temporarily.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers, however, one driver didn't come back.. it actually seemed to be better at first, but now I have to reboot it almost everytime I open it.  I thought if I didn't leave it in hibernation, just turn it off, while not using it, that would help, it didn't.  I have also tried updating the drivers and they are updated.. If anyone knows what else I can do, please help, it's terribly annoying, plus I have a lot of music on it, I'd like to listen to it sometime.

  • Strange sound problems with Terminal

I've been having a strange sound issue for a couple months now that's driving me insane. What seems to happen is that when I launch/close Terminal the sound volume seems to change. It usually increases, but sometimes the output device toggles to the internal speaker. It's very strange, very frustrating, and very reproducible.
I have reset PRAM, done an SMC reset, cleared every cache I can think of, reset preferences on Terminal, checked bash-related (profile, bashrc, etc) and nothing seems to help. It does appear that it's iTunes specific - the volume of DVD player doesn't change when I use terminal in a similar way. If I remember correctly, I had the problem before my Leopard upgrade as well. I have the MS intellitype/intellipoint utilities installed for my keyboard/mouse, although I don't know if that matters.
Any idea what could be causing this?
    thanks!

  • Very strange headphone issue

    G'day everyone.
Yesterday I received a brand new iPhone 4 and today, after syncing all my music, I noticed a strange problem when listening through any earphones. When the music is playing at low volume it is very muffled, though when the volume is turned up close to full, the audio seems to jump into a state of clarity where it suddenly sounds normal.
I was on the phone to apple about this problem and whilst I was on hold I decided to plug in my headphones to see if they worked for calls... they did, so I decided to test further and see if my music was working... it was, but as soon as I hung up from the call and tried the music again it went back to being muffled until the volume was turned to full. Apple suggested a hard reset which did not help, any other ideas?
    Cheers.

I just talked to Apple Support and they are going to repair it for me, it's just I need to wait til Friday since I am broke from Christmas! Once I get paid, then I can dish out the 30 dollars to get a rental iPhone to hold me over. The restore temporarily fixed the touchscreen issue since it happened again hours later.
Also, nobody I know who would have a spare AT&T phone doesn't come to mind so I can't just borrow a phone and start the repair process now, but the wait isn't too bad. At least they do not limit the iPhone rental to just physical Apple Store customers!
Thanks for the help, folks. :V

  • ATV2 Sound Issues - known workaround?

    Hi there
I'm also having still some sound issues with my Apple TV 2 (using latest firmware and iTunes Release running on a Mac mini Server)
The ATV2 is connected by HDMI and Toslink to a DENON receiver. I do have a library of movies converted from DVD using Handbrake with standard Apple TV 2 preset. This was including a AAC Prologic Stereo downmix audio track and usually a AC-3 passthrough 5.1 suround audio track. Since the 4.4 updates i don't have Dolby Digital sound anymore and optical output is only working when disconnect HDMI.
With the older firmware 4.3 i did not had any problem!
I found this workaround to reenable Dolby Digital Sound output:
1.) Go to the audio track selection menue by pressing select button, switch to audio selection menue switch manually to the second audo track still having stereo downmix (should be the AC-3 track.
2.) Repeat procedure to switch back to the first audio track -> ATV switches AC-3 to HDMI output!
This works on all my handbrake coded movies including aac stereo and ac-3 5.1 audio tracks. It has to be repeated when changing movie.
This is clearly a newly introduced software bug, please fix it!
    Thanks

Well fact is, that all movies have correct sound AAC and AC-3 tracks using handbrake 0.95 standard Apple TV 2 preset. None of these movies had any issues with previous ATV2 4.3 firmware releases.
Furthermore the Issue can be corrected by simply switching audio track selector in ATV2 twice novadays!!!
While investigating the problem I had also the idea of some mistakes in the movies itself. So i used Subler and mediainfo to check the video files. Then used Quicktime, iTunes and VLC to examine content and could really not see any problem with m4v files.
VLC can correctly switch audio track because it can decode AC-3 DD 5.1 streams internally.
Quicktime locks like decoding both audio stream simultanously (has no switch to select) causes strange echo.
iTunes shows the two audio streams in menue but won't let you switch to dolby digital (greyed out) implies, that it neither can passthrough nor decode AC-3 DD 5.1 tracks.
I also saw, that with the 4.3 firmware i could have sent DD 5.1 to the optical output, even with connected HDMI cable, which is definitely not the case anymore.
    Still need to be fixed!
