Strange sound on start-up

Every time i open my MBA there is a strange sound comming from the left part of the keyboard near the "esc" button and power port. It's like a "clink" sound last 2 seconds almost like a short circuit sound.
Is this normal or should i go to apple service asap?

I would definitely have it looked at ASAP. If it is a possible warranty issue, you could be jeopardizing coverage if you continue to use it and further damage results from that continued usage. Irrespective of that, it never gets less expensive to repair, if you wait.

  • Strange sounds/not starting up

I was using my computer just fine earlier tonight. The battery got low and the computer powered down.
Now, I cannot get the computer to start back up. It makes sounds like something is running smoothly. I've tried starting it up several times and done some of the keystroke combinations I've read on other posts (command, option, p, r and shift at start-up). Every time I can get it to do something, I either get a gray screen or a folder with a flashing question mark and one time I got it to get to the Apple logo where it just kept spinning.
    Any ideas?

If you have the original HDD in the computer it is probably failing of failed. These HDDs have an average life of 3 to 5 years, and yours might have retired. If you are able to boot from the install disk to a Repair Disk
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it says anything but Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior
Please post back, particularly on the S.M.A.R.T Status.

  • Strange sounds - mid 2010 iMac 27'' i7

    Hi all,
I have my new iMac for almost a month now and today I started hearing some strange sounds every 5 to 10 minutes. What I hear is something like a rat in the mac scratching its fingers on the aluminium:
chk---chk--chk-chk-chk-chk. It goes like this, one scratch - pause - second scratch - pause and finally four continuous scratches.
I have lowered the volume of the built-in mic and line in with no luck. When the sound is muted I don't get it so it's a sound coming from the speakers for sure.
    Any ideas?
    Regards

    Well,
kinda embarrassed but whatever, someone else might have the same issue.
I'm writing the cause to save him/her from formatting the computer, spend hours on the net searching for strange sounds on iMac, cursing apple etc...

    Outlook.
    Sound for "No new messages".
It repeats the sound for each single account.

  • Cracking strange sound when comming from sleep

When comming from a sleep (not always, but when beeing longer in sleep) I hear (next to the superdrive sound that is normal) a sort of cracking 'strange' sound out of my left/center area just around where the fan is.
It's a sound like you plugin a radio with an headplug let's say. Seems to come out of the speakers, but i'm not sure about that.
Is it normal (didn't do this before, only noticed it now after a month)? Or can i add another point to the list when i'm calling applecare (i really have a very monday morning machine i guess,: cpu whine, display not ok, strage blinking numlock sometimes).
Did find some thinks that look alike:

Great description...! I thought it sounded a bit like the trashcan sound.
I have got the same thing which isn't exactly my biggest problem... I also have the situation, that my MB doen't go to sleep, unless I directly tell it to. I thought the sound was related to that problem, but as none of you have mentioned it...?
Also my MB cannot be started normally every now and again and I have to do a PRAM reset to get it running again.
This is my second MB, so I'm slowly running out of patience...
The first one had the RSS, by the way.

  • Need some help with strange sounds in Logic Pro 8

    Hi!
I need some help with a problem I have in Logic Pro 8.
When I have arrange window open, suddley strange high tones starts to make noise in my headphones. I don't know where these sounds comes from or why, but I need some help to get them away. Should I just try to contact Apple?
    Martin

    Hi Martin
Welcome to the forum. Give everyone here some more info about your set up otherwise it may be difficult to figure out what is wrong.
    Which mac?
    Which OS?
    any hardware devices?
if you are listening through headphones using the built in audio from the mac, you may be hearing fan noise or a hard drive spin noise.

  • IPhone making strange sound when receive all types of message.

I've bought my iPhone 4S last week and it started making a really strange sound when receiving all sorts of messages (e-mail, whatsapp, sms). The sound is the sound I selected for each one but it loops 4 or 5 times everytime! What can it be?

If no change after powering your iPhone off and on, try an iPhone reset, which is done by pressing and holding the home button and the sleep/wake or on/off button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo and then release - ignoring the slide to turn off prompt when doing so. An iPhone reset does not affect any data or settings.

  • Fatality set - strange sound

hi. i have an ongoing problem with the fatality headset which didnt start until a few months after i bought it. this problem persists on 2 diff computers with diff OS - xp and vista. basically there's no problems when initially using the device. after a couple of hours of use, the sound will suddenly warp and everything becomes incoherently off-the-wall strange-sounding. all i have to do to recover is exit the current game and restart. im thinking that the problem is likely attributable to the physical condition of the set. at one end of the cord near the plug there is a fraying. however this is still odd imho b/c it seems slight.

never mind! i saw prev thread - lol.

  • No sound or strange sounds when trying to record guitar

    Hi!
I'm new to Logic Pro, after having worked with garageband for many years.  I've just been trying to record guitar through my audio interface, with strange results.  I've set my audio in and output source as my M-Audio firewire solo, created an audio track, and selected the guitar sound I want.  At first there was no input, then when I deleted the first track and created a new one, I could hear the guitar through the monitor and it was being input, but it had a horrible distorted and out of tune sound - and that was how it sounded when I recorded it too.  Then I tried it again and it seemed to be working fine for about 5 minutes - it sounded fine through the headphones and the recording was right - but then went back to the strange sounds again - without me changing anything!
I'm using Logic Pro 9.1.8, on a Macbook Pro running Mac OSX 10.8.3, and have a M-Audio Firewire Solo audio interface.
I'm very frustrated right now - so I'd be grateful for any help!
    Thanks,
    Stephen

    Hi stephenhis,
If you are having issues with imput audio in Logic Pro, the first place to start would be with some basic isolation troubleshooting to see if the issue can be localized. That should provide a good basis for further troublshooting should the issue persist.

  • Nokia Lumia 800 (strange sound)

Noticed last night that when i press any of the 3 buttons at the bottom of the screen a strange crackling/buzzing sound happens. Also happens at the start of an incoming phone call. Sounds like the speaker is dodgy. Anyone got a similar experience or know what might be worng.? I have vibrate turned off so i know its not that.

I have also just noticed that the camera button is loose and rattles, but im not sure this directly linked to the strange sound coming from the home buttons.

  • New MacBook making strange sounds...

Alright, I know already that MacBook's have been known to make some strange sounds (buzzing noise near the top left of the keyboard etc.) but this noise has been driving me crazy...
The sound comes from around the center to the bottom right of the keyboard and sounds like I guess a bubbling/gargling-ish scratching sound I guess. I have no idea where the CPU is on the MacBook so maybe it's coming from that? It's very difficult to explain but it's the only other strange sound I've heard besides the buzz in the top left corner so maybe some of you know what I'm talking about.
Well anyways, it's been driving me nuts and I was wondering if there's any way to get rid of this sound? Sorry if this is a bit vague, it's difficult to explain so if you need anymore information, I'll get back to you asap.

I went to the Apple Store today to get it looked at and they couldn't find any problems with it. They ran all sorts of tests, and found nothing wrong with it. However, when I got home from the Apple Store, about an hour after starting my MacBook up, I start to hear a crackling sound come from the Hard Drive. Is this normal and should I be worried? Because even though the genius said that my HD is fine, I'm still worried since I've never heard this sound coming from it so loudly and consistently.

  • Strange noise on start-up followed by no entry sign

My Macbook Pro (pre black keyboard) started making a strange noise on start up - a very loud grating noise.
Now I get a 'no entry' sign on start up. I cannot progress any further than this sign.
Any ideas on a fix, please?
    Thank you.

    Karl:
Sounds like you are due for a HDD replacement. Try booting from the install disk, launch Disk Utility in the Utilities menu and see if the HDD appears in the sidebar. You can also boot from the Apple Hardware Test and run the extended test. However, from your description it sounds very much like the HDD. Hopefully you have an up to date backup.
Please post back with an update or further questions/comments. Also include detail or your computer (processor speed, RAM, etc.) in your profile and/or response.

Just done a replacement of the pata DVD drive (its new and is working ok),  and a fresh clean  install of Snow Leopard with all updates, iMac 5.1 behaves strange, sometimes I start Google Chrome and look at youtube videos the computer freezes and shuts down immediately,
I believe its  related to overheating ?
iStat Pro shows GPU diode temp at 66 C, CPU at 48 C,  Fan rpms is around 1000
    Any ideas somebody ?
The hard disk has been previously checked with state of the art techniques that have confirmed that the hard disk drive is in perfect condition.

1.5-3 minute boot up as opposed to 15-20 seconds
    And
why it takes a long time to load a lot of things.
    I have restored this
    from a time machine partition.
TimeMachine is only a backup and restore, it won't fix issues in software and according to your information, doesn't even optimize the restore for best performance on boot hard drives.
What you need to do to regain your speed is to understand how your machine works
    Why is my computer slow?
Fix any and all issues in software following this list of fixes
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Then follow this defrag method I've outlined
How to safely defrag a Mac's hard drive
    Most commonly used backup methods
There shouldn't be need to reinstall OS X fresh unless your having file structure issues which if they are should appear when in the Steps, which then a zero erase and install will cure as well as any bad sector issues, the defrag step wouldn't be necessarry on a freshly installed system obviously as the files are written all together, not in portions all over the drive.
    Hope this assists.

  • Strange sound - muvo n

    Hi.
my problem: during listening the music i hear in background very iritating and strange sound (kind of crack like in out of tune radio)any solutions ?

Try formatting the player, and loading a firmware update. Then load some new content (music) onto it. Also, if you have another set of headphones to try, that would be best, to make sure that isn't causing the problem.
