Strange Speeds

Hi, my broadband speeds are up and down atm, can anyone explain this for me please? I'm confused about why this is happening.  7/14/2015 11:20 AM GMT83.71.30.2354.06 Mb/s0.52 Mb/s280 msDundalk~ 50 miShareDelete Row 7/12/2015 9:13 PM GMT 14.55 Mb/s0.61 Mb/s34 msDublin~ 50 miShare  7/12/2015 8:50 PM GMT 3.34 Mb/s0.47 Mb/s232 msDundalk~ 50 miShare  8/30/2013 11:22 AM GMT 15.54 Mb/s0.92 Mb/s15 msCoventry< 50 miShare

Hi nagleantai
Speeds can fluctuate depending on a number of things, For instance the distance of the device from the modem, what type of walls (&insulation) are in the way of the signal between device and modem, what type of usage is going on in the background (downloading streaming etc.) and of course number of users on the service.
I have run a number of tests and there is no fault on your line and everything seems fine with your internal set up.
Should this create a cause for concern or have a serious effect on your experience please feel free to contact eircoms technical support department on free phone 1901 or via instant WebChat here www.eircom.ie/chatnow
Thanks

  • Strange speed problems.

Recently, we got BT Infinity, new hub and everything. With this we had to have the hub downstairs. That meant that I had to use this thing that would connect to another one upstairs which would then connect to my desktop PC with an ethernet cable.
My problem is that the speed is fine for the other devices (wireless) like laptops and iPhones but the speed for the desktop PC keeps going extremly slow, videos at 144p do not load, Google takes many seconds to load and other websites take much longer. The ping however is perfectly fine so gaming is not an issue. And sometimes it goes back to an acceptable speed. What can I do?

Ok, problem resolved, with some - but not total - certainty about the cause.
I gathered additional data about the problem:
DiskWarrior 4.4, run from an external drive, reported no problems with the internal drive.
Time Machine definitely had no problems running backups as long as those particular files were excluded.
But based mainly on the observations I reported in the previous post (Feb 12, 2014 7:33 pm) I concluded that some sort of marginal surface defect on the internal hard drive was causing the hard drive to read those particular files with great difficulty (meaning huge delays as it tried again and again, perhaps thousands of times, to read the same spot), although always 100% accurately in the end.
So I called it quits, declared the internal hard drive "end of life," and bought a new internal hard drive.
Just to test my theory, I took one last measurement:
I used Disk Utility on the recovery partition to zero out the entire drive, thinking that process might trigger the hard drive's internal hardware to spot a lot of bad blocks and either reduce the reported drive capacity (well, that's how it worked in the olden days of hard drives, decades ago) or trigger the SMART status to indicate the drive was at risk of failing.
But no, after zeroing the drive, the reported capacity was identical down to the last byte, and DiskWarrior reported that the SMART status of the drive still showed no problems.
But in the end, I have now restored the entire system from the external Time Machine backup on the Firewire drive, including the files that froze up the computer previously. And I just completed the system's first successul normal, complete, rapid Time Machine backup. Whew, a week of my life wasted on a mysteriously "not actually failing" but probably failing hard drive.
I hope this report helps someone else who can't figure out a Time Machine hangup despite exhausting all the Pondini and other Apple-guru bits of wisdom out there.

  • Strange speed difference, advice please

Hello, I'm here because I'm a bit confused as to what appears to be a "capped" speed of 7.78mb for my broadband.
Just before the end of last year i ordered BT broadband and was told I'd have an estimated speed of up to 15mb. After receiving the equipment i did a few tests and was actually pleased that i was getting around 16mb, with understandable drops to about 9mb during peak times.
Unfortunately i was having other problems which i don't need to go into, but i ended up cancelling with BT.
A couple weeks later i changed my mind and decided BT was still the best option, i joined again and was told over the phone my speed would be up to 22mb. I was surprised as this is over the up to 20mb advertised as the top speed. I checked online and it also estimates i will get 22mb speed.
Anyway after receiving my equipment the 2nd time around I've done several tests for the past few days and EVERY single time I'm get a download speed of 7.78mb, with the odd occasion rising to 7.79. Upload speeds are always at 1mb which they always used to be so no problem.
I realise this is not a slow speed, but the fact this is a constant speed regardless of time of day leads me to believe my speed is somehow being capped. Especially since it is less than half what i was getting before, yet i was estimated in having in faster speeds.
If it helps I'm in East London area.
    Any help is appreciated, thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

your profile is down at 8000 suggesting that your hub has been disconnecting or you have been resetting the hub in the hope of improving your connection.
to keep resetting your hub is the worst thing you can do and the best thing is to leave connected 24/7 for 3/5 days and your profile will rise to match your speed.

  • Strange download/upload speeds using the airport express as a repeater

    HI,
i am having strange speed issues.   Let me start off by stating my AirPort Extreme is on the middle floor of a 3 story condo.   The condo has 2ft concrete slabs between floors.   I have a repeater for the first floor as my signal strength was poor.  I get great speeds on the same floor as the AirPort Extreme 45/15.   On the 1st floor with the airport express, I get 4 down/12 up.  My upload speed is always faster by a wide margin.  On the 3rd floor (no repeater) I get similar results.   I don't understand how my upload speeds are preserved, yet my download speeds via the repeater or 3rd are awful.
HElp!   I'm using 2.4gHz for better penetration and I have changed the channels to help with congestion.  Any ideas ?

Having the upload speed not change is odd indeed, but the loss of download speeds can almost invariably be attributed to the concrete walls in your condo. These do a poor job of allowing Wi-Fi signals to pass through them. Your actual Internet speeds are not affected by them, but the overall bandwidth speeds between the Internet server and your computer will be.
The best solution, albeit maybe not practical, would be to interconnect each of these base stations with an Ethernet connection and reconfigure the entire network for roaming.

  • LR5 registration and catalogue issues

I just upgraded to LR5 (from LR3) and after the initial set up where LR5 read and updated my LR3 catalogue I closed LR5 and saved the catalog. Now when i attempt to open LR5 it takes me through the registration and serial # dialogue and forces me to create a new catalog rather than use my existing catalog. Furthermore, after registering LR5 several times both in the dialogue that comes up upon opening LR5 as well as online at adobe, my registration doesn't go through. It always says i successfully register and then next time i refresh the page i have "no registered products".

    Hi
    1.)About serial number:
Maybe you have typed wrong letters. Please take care for O and 0 (zero) or I and l (little L or big i ).
In my opinion you should try it again and check these possibilities.
    2.)About wireless:
Well, its not easy to say why it happens. You can try to update the wireless intel driver. Maybe this solves the strange speed changing.

  • Sudden Strange Decrease in Sync Speed

On the afternoon of Thursday 4/3/2010 I had a strange change in my sync speed.
For about the past year I have enjoyed a solid 3.1 meg sync and same IP Profile. Sometimes its goes up to 3.5, but never below 3 meg. I know my neighbours get around 2 meg, but working in IT I invested the time in getting decent kit and improving the connection, despite the line length being approx 4km.
However, on thursday afternoon I noticed the PPP link was down, but the sync was still at 3.1 meg.
So I rebooted the router (D-Link DSL-2740B)and it came back as 1.6 meg sync and 1 meg IP Profile! (Attenuation and SNR stayed the same at 63.5 and 6.5 respectively)
Obviously I did the usual checks and unplugged everything, with the modem directly in the master socket, changed the cables, changed the filters, tried a second modem, checked line for audible noise, etc and over 24 hours got the sync back up to 1.8 meg with a 1.5 meg IP Profile, but I cannot seem to get it any faster!
Now I know a direct neighbour (downstream) has had lots of problems with his line recently and keeping synced, but it seems odd that suddenly my connection quality has dropped by 50%.
Could someone have done something at the Exchange (Braintree) that could have affected me so badly?
    Any help appreciated.
    Adam

see if leaving everything alone improves the problem, its possible that someone was in the exchange and caused the problem, more likley is that someone was using a none compliantdevice in the area and caused the problem, have any of the locals recently received/used something like a shiney remote control vehicle or helicopter?
if the problem persists then request help via the forum mods, or ring india for it

Well my home hub 5 rebooted 3 times yesterday due to this openRG activity which seems to be a pushed trial version of new firmware 1.7 it's been downloaded to my hub but not activated as of yet lucky enough it has not effected DLM as of yet speeds still the same around 68 down 19 up but really annoyed as bt have not informed us of this, a simple email would be enough to keep us in the loop but that's asking to much I guess?

  • Acer M5201 Fan Speed Strange Annoyance

I have an Acer M5201 desktop which came with windows vista, I since put Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit on. The problem I have is that when I start up the PC, the fan comes on very noisy at full speed and doesn't slow down at all, I seem to remember that it
used to come on full speed for a few seconds and then slow down, however the strange thing is, if I put it to sleep, and then wake it up immediately (or at any time later) when it comes back on, the fan is slow and fairly quiet, and performs correctly, so
it only speeds up if it gets hot and then slows down again. Any suggestions please?
The PC isn't getting overly hot causing the fan to remain on full as the sleep wake cycle makes it work correctly, I have checked the CPU and it is around the 47 mark.

  • E1200 strange wireless speed issue

I posted this on another forum and thought I'd post it here as well.
Currently have Comcast's Performance tier internet and usually get anywhere from 22-27mbps down and 4-5mbps up which has treated us well.
Xfinity SMCD3GNV gateway modem in bridge mode so I can use my own router
Desktop #1 is hard wired to router
Desktop #2 is wirelessly connected (has Asus PCE-N15 wireless NIC in it - driver up to date)
    Macbook wirelessly connected
Xbox 360 S hard wired to router
    Nokia Lumia 900 wirelessly connected
I have a few different routers (Asus rt-n56u, Linksys e1200, Linksys WRT54GL all with latest firmwares) that I mess with far too often and am having a weird issue with the e1200.  What I found is that when I am using the e1200 every device works fine and gets the normal speed (22-27 down/5 up) except desktop #2. The speeds are absolutely atrocious. Even the WRT54GL which is wireless G smokes the e1200, but only on desktop #2. I thought it might be a setting which is different than when I test the other routers, but I make sure they are all the same. The download speeds sometimes barely get to 5mbps but upload speeds are fine on desktop #2 with the e1200 whereas with the WRT54GL and rt-n56u the download speeds are 20+mbps. Would anyone have any idea why this would be? Just kind of strange that every device works as it should other than one computer with the e1200, but that computer isn't effected when the other routers are tested with the same settings.  Things I have tried are:
-Made sure the router was running the latest firmware
-Made sure the wireless adapter had the latest driver
-Rolled back the driver on the wireless adapter
-Turned off ipv6 in the wireless adapter settings
-Changed the channel width on the router from auto (20/40) to strictly 20mhz
-Changed wireless channel from auto to 1,6,11
    -Toggled WMM on and off
All of these things made no difference for desktop #2 and it can only achieve around 3-5mbps with the e1200. The Asus is probably a faster router overall, but I'd sort of rather use the e1200 IF I can figure this problem.  Thanks for your time!

Just checked the options for the wireless card and unfortunately that isn't an option.  For "wireless mode" the only options are: IEEE 802.11b, IEEE 802.11b/g, and IEEE 802.11b/g/n.  Of course I have it set to the last option and the speeds are still the same.  I have included a url to screenshots of each of the settings so maybe someone can point out something that might help.  Thanks for your time.

    Hello
Since Monday I've noticed sudden drop in my broadband speed. Usually I've been receiving 80-120kbps but since Monday it is only 15-21kbs. I did everything they saying about improving broadband speed and it is not working. Strange thing  for me is that Hub stat showing good downstream:

What's more I did speed check via BT web site and did WCC test (whatever it means) and I received following info:

    Hi Dragdy
Did you notice what your present IP profile is set to?....
I'm betting it's come down, because you have loss of signal after only a 45 minute connection time.

  • Very strange internet connection speed issue,

    Good Evening all.
I have a strange issue.   I got hooked up with a new ISP a few weeks ago and since that time I have had very slow PC connection speeds.   I have done speed tests,  and I get between 16 and 17mbps down,  but the PC runs and acts like I am getting 4 to 5mbps.  I have a Compaq Presario running Windows Vista Home Premium.  Service Pack 2.  There is 3 gig of ram and a 3ghz processor, with a 32 bit OS.
Here is how the setup looks.   The netgear modem is plugged into a regular phone jack and then goes through a router and then it is hardwired to the PC.  If I wire the PC direcly to the modem instead of going through the router,  I get the same mbps no matter what.  Between 16 and 17.
The wierd thing is that I can watch a movie on Netflix through my Wii with no issues.    This is strange to me because I would figure there to be more issues with wireless connections rather than wired connections.
I have a netgear modem and a netgear router.
I am almost wondering if my PC is not processing the incoming speed correctly.   I don't know if this is correct,  because I used to have Xfinity internet before this new internet and had absolutely no problems.  BTW my new ISP is called Edge Networks.  The boast speeds up to 30mbps.  I know that 16 to 17 is pretty good,  I just do not know why It seems like I am not getting anywhere near that.
While on the subject,  I also have another PC that I have gotten a USB adapter and am using wireless to access the internet.   This PC gets 5 to 6mbps down.   It is a Compaq running Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1.  It has 3 gig ram and a 64 bit OS  with a 2.3ghz processor.
I do not have a clue why I have such slow inernet page loading speeds,  other than the possibility that my PC's are just severly outdated.
Can anyone help explain this issue?

    Evadfa, welcome to the forum.
I suggest contacting your ISP for help with the problem.  They should be able to help you since they know their product better than anyone.  I don't believe that it is a computer problem, since it is happening on two separate computers.

Sorry for replying late.. Was very busy.. So, the thing is that I disabled every module & loaded only microcode & powernow-k8 in /etc/rc.local. Now, I'm getting good speed while copying data but the problem is that the processor is running & full speed i.e. 3.0 GHz. I checked it via cat /proc/cpuinfo. Also, there is a message in the bootime, that i'm posting here..
grep: /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq/scaling_available_governors: No such file or directory
If it helps, here's the output of cat /proc/cpuinfo

  • Strange download speed / latency problem

    Hi all,
I've lately been having problems with only my download speed and latency when gaming online. Sometimes I'm getting my normal full 10MB connection and other times it randomally drops down to between 0.1 and 4MB, it doesn't matter if it is peak hours or not it is very random. When I am getting my full speed all websites/gaming online work perfectly but when the speed drops even to 4MB or so everything requires constant refreshing and my gaming online becomes impossible.
I've noticed that sometimes when the phone rings the broadband will disconnect, and my upload speed appears to be unaffected.
I have tried a quiet line test and it was clear so I'm not sure what is going on.
I have tried different routers/cables/filters and have also tried restarting the router.
I read about packet loss and thought it was maybe an issue to do with that, and so when doing a pathping to BT.net i've noticed that when the speed is high and everything appears to be working I get no packet loss, but when it is slow and things don't want to load I get some (as shown below). I have no idea if this is related but I will link as much information as i can to see if it is any help.

  • Strange things with Speed Fan 4.14...

I have followed the suggestions exactly as told in an extensive thread here. The problem I have is that despite having the 865PE Neo2, it shows up as Winbond W83627HF. The thread says that since I have the 865PE Neo2 I should also have the Winbond "83627THF" (notice the THF and not only HF which is for the P875...).
Anyone knows why this is and how to fix that? My temps are as follows: NB 54 (I know this isn't correct), System 39, HD0 37, CPU 35. Is it really normal to have such a cool CPU while the system is 39? I thought the CPU would always be hotter/warmer than the entire system...
    Thanks in advance.

    Danny,
I have a MSI 875p NEO-FISR (MS-6758 V2), but my speed fan config screen says I have W83627THF chips. I also note the little console window always reports:
    I/O properly initialized
!!!Exception in reading CPU INFO at startup (2)!!!
    Linked ISA BUS at $0290
    Linked Intel 82801EB ICH5 SMBUS at $0C00
    Scanning ISA BUS at $0290...
Winbond W83627THF (ID=$90) found on ISA at $290
    Scanning Intel SMBus at $0C00...
LM80 found on SMBus at $2F
    SMART Enabled for drive 0
    Found Maxtor 6Y080P0 (80.0GB)
    End of detection
Am I running into a problem here due to the exception? I guess I have always just ignored this because otherwise speedfan seems to work ok.

  • Strange issues with Leopard (Safari, Mail, speed)

I have a 20" iMac (white model) which I got in March of this year. I just upgraded to Leopard (did the upgrade path with the DVD. Nothing set in options or anything special). The upgrade went fine and 10.5 seems to be running ok. There are a few issues though that don't make much sense to me and I wonder if there is something amiss with my install.
    1. Safari and Firefox both won't resolve addresses anymore. If I type in apple in the address bar it takes me to Verizon's search engine to resolve. I have to type www.apple.com to get it to go to the site. I checked my PC to see if this was something Verizon was doing and it worked fine in Firefox. Also weird is I don't use Verizon's search engine, I use Google so why is it going there? How can this be fixed?
    2. With Mail when I send an e-mail and type someone's e-mail address with some of the accounts, it will resolve their name just fine. It removes their e-mail address and just shows their short name like it's suppose to. However, not all e-mail addresses do this. Some will show me the full address. Not earth shaking mind you, but a bit of a pain. This seems to be tied to the Verizon accounts. Gmail seems to resolve ok as do other e-mail addresses. I checked the address book and it is selected to show all smart names so that is set up right and since it works for some of the addresses, I assume that is not the issue.
    3. Safari seems slow. I don't know if this is a network issues (the PC seems fine in the other room). My airport speeds look good but going to site to site seems to take a long time. Other programs seem to take just a bit longer too. Even mousing over the Dock, you notice a slight hiccup before it pops up. Nothing insane mind you, just a slight...delay. I wonder if 1GB of RAM isn't enough to really do 10.5 well. Anyone have any feedback on that? Should I bump my RAM to 2GB to get better performance? What is the "sweet" spot as far as RAM goes? Is 2GB gonna really be the best (I don't do real intense things like Final Cut Pro or things like that) or is 3GB really the best bang for the buck? Tiger was awesome on the system but now it just seems a little slower. Should I have done a wipe of the HD and installed Leopard clean? I was told there really isn't any benifit of doing that so I chose the upgrade path to keep everything in tact. Any suggestions on how to speed things up?
Thanks for the help on all this.

Well I have the same problem #2
It seems that Mail will not resolve names in my address book but I can use the address button and search and select the names.
Also it seems that my preview window will not preview some messages and it just hangs there with a "Loading..." message. But I can actually click the message and see it fine.
